change flowers?
our flower is the tempora rose... and its pretty and all that- and i know it has symbolism but it would be cool if it was something like the lily or something... have you ever wanted to change your sororities flower?
|
Is your organization a local?
I couldn't personally imagine changing my fraternity's flower. It's been a symbol of the fraternity for over a century. It's rooted in the fraternity's symbolism, etc. If your flower is just a pretty thing you put on shirts though, then fine. |
yea- it is a local- and there would be world war 3 if i said i wanted to change it... ours is related to our crest and is really important... but everyone has a rose do you know waht i mean? lol
|
Ours is a rose, too, but it ain't just any old rose...it's the pink Killarney rose, which is somewhere between extremely hard to find and extinct. However, our founders chose it, so that's fine by me. Your flower isn't just any old rose, either...it means something special to you, so what's wrong with that? :)
|
If I could change anything about Tri Delta on a shallow level (symbols/mascots/colors kind of level) it would be the flower. Before I went through initiation I loved all of our symbols and colors and things EXCEPT for our flower. I'm not a huge fan of the pansy. Now that I know the meaning behind it I think it's beautiful and I don't think I could change it -- but before that I definitely wanted to. ;)
|
I would NEVER want to change our symbol from out beautiful red rose! It's been our symbol since the beginning and has so much significance to us. :)
|
Eh, a flower is a flower.
There are many more important things in life. Like how girls have to pick out their outfit and shoes for the next day...stuff like that. |
The good thing about a common flower like a carnation or rose is that they're easily available at rush or other times when you need a flower. I have several Tri Delt, ADPi, Zeta, and Kappa friends who have expressed frustration because you can't just run out and pick up pansies, violets, and irises to give your new members.
|
Alpha Sigma Phi's original flower was the Cardinal rose; when Alpha Kappa Pi consolidated with us in 1946 we adopted the Talisman rose, which is a hybrid of the cardinal rose and the yellow tea rose of Alpha Kappa Pi. Like many hybrid roses, the Talisman rose is very difficult to obtain, so in many cases it was quite acceptable to wear a red rose instead.
In 2000, the Grand Council retired the Talisman rose in favor of the Twin Roses - both cardinal and yellow tea - as our official flowers. |

I got 3 of them from sisters when I was initiated last year and have given them out countless times. It lasts longer than a bouquet of flowers (unless you have a black thumb of death...). and just so this is not totally off topic, I don't think I'd want to change our flower, though I can see where AlethiaSi is coming from. Originality is always good! |
I love ours and since i am a ivy person i LOOOOVe ivy not a problem.
Your correct about afircian violets at wal mart... very easily attainable to get there. I have actually 2 potted violets in my huse from Wally word. |
I love our lily of the valley... :)
But I'm not so crazy about our mascot. I appreciate the reasoning behind why the giraffe was chosen, and it's certainly unique, but if it were up to me, it wouldn't be our mascot. |

LOL That is soooooooooo me!!!! Our Beta class presented all the Alpha's a flower pot with pansys, and some were real and some were fake. They gave me real one, and I cringed. They handed me a real bouquet because 'We figured you are a bio major so you would keep them alive" Yeah, like 5 days later it was dead. I felt like such a bad Tri Delt. |
Ours is The White Rose!
Aside upon the merger of TKN (1939) Merger with LXA, the Red Rampant Lion looked like a Ketchup spot on the Coat Of Arms! Lilys----Not, that is what is placed on your Coffin when placed in the Ground!:( How about Peonies or Iris?:) Or, just stay with what you have as it is part of your History!:D 75 Years aint Bad for a Local! |
Gamma Phi Beta has actually altered our flower - it was originally just a carnation, no color specified. In the 1950s (I think in 1956 but I'm not positive) we changed it to the pink carnation.
Truthfully, while I love our brown and brown, I wish we could adopt an international standard of colors to WEAR, because nobody wants brown jerseys. Some chapters do pink and white, some do pink and blue, some do green, etc. |
No way!
I love fleur de lis! (irises)
When I preffed Kappa, we were given a blue Dutch iris wrapped in cellophane, tied with light blue and dark blue ribbons and a key. I remember having no idea what kind of flower it was, but thinking it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Now I have tons of iris bulbs planted in my yard in several varieties: Dutch, Japanese, Siberian. I have all different colors, but still love blue the most. I'm running out of sunny spots to put them! For my wedding I asked the florist to include blue irises in the arrangements, but there weren't many available since it was August and therefore not in season. |
I would never want to change my sorority's flower (the Morning Glory). I love it too much and the symbolism behind it is beautiful! It's definitely hard, close to pretty much damn near impossible to find ANYTHING with morning glories on it. For senior sendoff gifts last year we wanted to decorate flower pots with KLY letters, colors, symbols, etc. and put Morning Glory seeds in them, but apparently those are really difficult to grow.
|
AlethiaSi- I feel ya on the flower deal. We're also a local and we have the red rose as our official flower. I think 3 other soro's on campus have that same flower, oye!
|
The Iris is the Poor Mans Orchaid!:)
I used to plant Irish in My back yard as a Kid! Hell you all see the purple and Yellow, I saw and planted Tobacco Road ( Dark Brown ), and Black Iris. Very Rare and unique. Easy to take care for and Most Beautiful! Grew Like a Damn Weed unless you knew how to plant them!:) |
I've never really wanted to change our flower... although I have thought about a new symbol.. (the sphinx is just REALLY hard to find/use to decorate etc) I mean I suppose Phi Sig's flower is *generic* if you just see it as a "red rose" but it's an AMERICAN BEAUTY rose and has tons of meaning... I say whenever you think one of your symbols is kinda less than personally desireable just remind yourself of the symbolism behind it and the fact that you didn't join because of the colors/symbols/flower you joined because of the women and the activities philanthropic and social... :D
|
Yes, I would want to change it. Ours is the yellow rose, and we use it because it is the universal symbol of friendship. However, it is also the flower of the sorority that I was a part of and was hurt really badly by, so I would love to change it to something else... We're in the midst of building a lot of new traditions, so I think it owuld be something not to difficult to do - we've even talked about it - but we don't want to offend or hurt the alumnae and founders. Therefore, I'm working on making it extremely special to me because it was extremely special to Phi Chi's founders - and Phi Chi IS extremely special to me.

I love our golden lyre -- but I would also love something cute to have as a mascot too -- so envious of the DZ turtle because I see SO many cute turtle things everywhere!! About the flower - well, I have always liked our red carnation for two major reasons -- cheap and easy to find! :D LOL! Of course its beautiful, full of symbolism, blahblahblah... I don't know what other flower I would have chosen -- been an Alpha Chi for too long to think about that kind of stuff I guess :) |
Theta's flower is the pansy - I like it because we have a lot of them growing around campus, and they're pretty. However, it's impossible to buy/give cut pansies, and it's difficult to keep potted pansies alive. We give our new girls pansies on bid day, but since it's in the middle of January, they aren't doing too well to begin with and most die within a week or so. However, I continue to use my pansy pot (which we paint with Theta kites and such) to keep my ticket stubs from concerts and stuff.
I love the SAI flower, the red rose. It's not very unique, but it's classic, beautiful - and easy to find. We give a rose to every SAI after every concert/recital/performance. It's really special, and I love getting a rose from my sisters! Sarah |
I love our flower, the Jacqeminot Rose, a rose with no thorns. And yes they can be hard to find, but we usually can find a pretty red rose from our local florist and that works just fine. The symbolism behind our flower is wonderful and I wouldn't want to change it. However, during recruitment we use gerbera daisies during Philanthropy to decorate because they are such bright colors. However, we do go all out and have our red roses all over the house for pref and bid day.
|
I love the lily of the valley, the only problem is it's not really much of a bouquet flower. On pref we always have to use white roses but I think its not a big deal cuz white roses use both of our colors.
I do absolutely adore tulips though and if I was starting a sorority I would definitely use them for the flower. Too bad they're out of season most of the year. :( |

I have to admit that some of the crests (skull and bones, dagger) creep me out a bit. Tri Delta has a nice, nonthreatening crest and nice, nonthreatening symbols. Unless you listen to GeekyPenguin when she claims that we tie our pledges upside down from pine trees and poke them with tridents. :p |
That's really funny because in my chapter the snake really isn't that prevalent except on our pledge pin and coat of arms. Kappa Delta also has a snake on their coat of arms
|
I'd be freaked out by ANY of the GLOs that use bones or skull and crossbones because I have a very intense phobia of bones!!!   Honestly, it's severe enough that it might make me consider cutting a group. LOL
Also, yeah, a bone phobia is really weird. Don't remind me, cause I already know. :D LOL |

Dem Bones, Dem Dry Bones, Them Dry Bones Said The Word of The Lord!
Bones are nothing more than Calcuim! What do you pick your teeth with, tooth pick!??? That is the Bones of Trees!:) Oh well it is snowing and I am not happy, it sucks!:( |
Crescent Moon is pretty harmless. Unless you count the fact that we turn into werewolves...;)
|
Alpha Gam roses are red and buff. Buff is a hard color to get (sort of tawny), so we usually use yellow.
At one time I was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma (red rose)and Beta Sigma Phi (yellow rose) which fit in very well with Alpha Gam. P.E.O.'s flower is the marguerite, most commonly represented as a daisy. Another easy-to-obtain flower. As for KKG's fleur-de-lis, just ask Carnation about her experience! |
Carnation - I wanna hear the fleur-de-lis story!!!
|
Okay! In the seventies, one of my Kappa friends kept talking about how there wasn't an official Kappa iris and asked me to breed one for them. I wrote y'all's HQ and got permission. It took several years but I finally bred the one of my dreams--the story is in the Summer 1981 Key...2 of the Kappas on GC have a copy. Its standards (top petals) are light blue and the falls (lower petals) are dark blue.
|
Cool, Carnation! So since Ms. MysticCat is a Kappa who has planted irises all around our yard (she claims it was her favorite flower even before she pledged Kappa, but Kappa surely intensified the love!), do you know if bulbs for your Kappa iris are available anywhere.
And I do have to give Ms. MysticCat props for equal time -- in the fall she always makes sure that we have chyrsanthemums -- the Phi Mu Alpha flower -- on the front porch. |
I sent the rhizomes to KKG HQ in 1981 but if you wrote them, surely they have enough to divide out by now!
|
My goodness, carnation....you definitely ROCK!!!!
I on the other hand buy those little mini yellow rose bushes and promptly kill them. Apparently they are much happier living in Kroger-land, so I leave them there now. PsychTau |
