I got in!

I just wanted to announce that I got into Northwestern's Communication Disorders grad program! I really wasn't expecting to get in! I now just need to sit and wait to hear back from the other five school I applied to. :D

Congratulations!! That's wonderful news. I am in the process of applying to Ph.D. programs, so I know how stressful the waiting can be. My best friend has a masters degree in Speech Pathology...similar field, right?

Big Hugs and Good wishes!

Yes, the two are the same thing. I know a lot of progams are trying to switch over to communication disorders. Where is your friend going to school?

Best of luck to you in your Ph.D. pursuits! I know I'm not quite as nervous because now I know that I'm at least into one school. I can actually start focusing on school and giving therapy now! LOL :D

I also applied to University of Illinois, Indiana University, Eastern Illinois, Illinois State, and Ball State University. I have a feeling it's going to be awhile longer to hear back from the rest, especially since most of their deadlines aren't until Feb.

Thank you all for your kind words (and cute smiley graphics, rainbow ;))

Congrats, Erin-- that is fantastic news! Getting accepting into Northwestern is wonderful-- will your program be in Evanston, or at the Chicago campus? I know from trying to make referrals that specialists in Communication Disorders are sorely needed-- you're going into a great field!

I'm not positive, but I think it's in Evanston. It seems like there are always job offers for speech pathologists. I know in Indiana some schools are even offering jobs to SLP's right out of college. This is odd because to be a "full fledged" SLP you really need to have your master's degree. I think in this area there just aren't enough people to go around.

I love my field and I'm glad to be a part of it! I'm doing therapy now actually, and it's a pleasure to help others. :)

No, I haven't heard anything official yet. Weird stuff has been going on with IU though. Last week I get an email saying that they're offering me a guest IU email account, and today I get an invite to join the IU speech path department in a workshop that they're hosting. :)

I'll keep everyone posted as I hear back from other schools and ultimately make my decision. :D Seriously, it's almost like I'm going through recruitment again! LOL!

ISUKappa 02-06-2004 12:08 AM

That's great! My sister got her masters in Speech Path from the University of Minnesota (really the only school she could go to if she wanted to live with her husband who already had a job in the Twin Cities.) She worked with special needs students in elementary schools until she had my niece.

Hubby's pledge son's girlfriend is currently in the program of the U of Iowa, I think she wants to go into research more than clinic work.

What do you want to go in to?

I've been thinking about this a lot lately, but I have so many interests in the field. I'm currently working with two young children, and I love that. I also have an interest in stuttering, voice, and stroke therapy. I wish I had more experience with adult patients before I go to grad school, but it looks like that won't be happening this semester.

Honestly, (and watch out for major cheesiness here but it's honest) but I'll be happy working with anyone as long as I'm helping.

erniegurl00 02-24-2004 10:27 PM

I found out today I got into Indiana University. Yeah! So now I officially have a choice to make.

I don't know what I'm going to do because I have to let IU know before April 15 if I'm going or not. But, I've heard that some schools won't let me know until the end of March if I've gotten in or not. Talk about making a quick decision!

That is wonderful news! Congratulations! :D
