Alpha Men

Alpha Men are on the forefront of social change in America. Although we all pursue goals in diverse fields of interest, we share a common mission in uplifting the economic condition of all our people. It is simply not enough for an Alpha Man to obtain a college degree, still a larger task remains. An Alpha Man must provide sound leadership in his community, being committed to service.

He is charged to lend a hand to his fellow man.

Okay. It just caught me by surprised that living in Humphrey country with active Alpha collegiate and alumni chapters that I had never heard that. :o But I think it is great. He was a wonderful statesman and a true civil rights proponent. My then church's choir sang at this funeral. *sidebar piece of trivia* Ann Nesby's sister, Marie, was the soloist.

sphinxpoet 01-27-2004 03:12 PM

Brother Humprhy was also a life member and attended conventions of the Fraternity.

blackbird 01-31-2004 12:13 AM

Hi Lawrence Ross, I bought your book when it first came out.

I am not an Alpha, but an Omega.

I wanted to ask you a question. On page 353 of your book, John Johnson says that Norman Manley was in a fraternity.

Was the Prime Minister of Jamaica Norman Manley really in a fraternity?

The reason why I am asking this is because I am Jamaican also.

Senusret I 01-31-2004 01:23 AM

Blackbird:

I know you addressed this to Lawrence, but Norman Manley was definitely in a fraternity -- he was an Alpha man! :D

I was watching Real Time with Bill Mahar last night(one of my favorite shows) and Brother Kwame Kilpatrick was on there and he as usual was excellent. Catch it on HBO if you can!

I have to correct you as Brother Flake is an Alpha he was intiated in 2003 before the Detroit Convention. He also attended the convention

Todd Duncan, the first Porgy in "Porgy and Bess." Also the first African American accepted into the New York City Opera. Taught voice at Howard University and lived to the ripe old age of 95.

And of course, a Brother of Mu Lambda Chapter.

Eddie Robinson was listed this week as #9 on ESPN's 25 Best Coaches In The Last 25 Years list. What makes this especially phenomenal is that the list includes coaches from all sports, all levels, not just college football. Needless to say, he's also the only African-American on the list. Check out the article and pass the word!

Documentary Celebrates Unique Lifelong Bonds Between Coach and Student-Athletes

Oct. 12, 2004

NEW YORK - The unique lifelong bonds between legendary Grambling State football coach Eddie Robinson and the student-athletes he coached and mentored over 50 years will be celebrated when CSTV: College Sports Television, (www.collegesports.com) premieres a special documentary on Robinson Saturday, October 16 (4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT) as part of its critically acclaimed Coach original series.

Robinson, who retired in 1997 as the winningest coach in college football history, built Grambling State into the premier historically black college as head coach from 1941 to 1997. He produced more than 200 future NFL players, more than any other college coach, and led the Tigers to eight national black college titles and 18 Southwestern Athletic Conference championships.

Perhaps more importantly, he produced hundreds of young eager, productive, ambitious citizens. While creating one of the greatest dynasties in all of sports, Robinson took as much pride in molding responsible, mature young adults who achieved great success in business and in life.

Among those interviewed for the documentary: Doris Robinson, Eddie Robinson's wife; Horace Judson, president of Grambling State University; Doug Williams, former Grambling State quarterback who later was a Super Bowl MVP; James Harris, former Grambling State quarterback who also played in the NFL; Ernie Ladd and Sammy White, former Grambling State and NFL greats; Eddie Robinson, Jr., the coach's son; and others.

CSTV's Coach original series explores the unique bonds between college sports' greatest coaches and their prized pupils, and the lessons taught on the playing field which remain relevant long after student-athletes' playing days are over.

The Eddie Robinson File:

· Coached Grambling State from 1941-97, compiling a 408-165-15 record and winning 8 national black college titles

· Became college football's winningest coach when Grambling State defeated Prairie View A&M in 1985 for his 324th victory, thus surpassing the iconic Paul "Bear" Bryant

· Among Robinson's former players who starred in the NFL: Buck Buchanan, Willie Davis, James Harris, Charlie Joiner, Ernie Ladd, Everson Walls, Doug Williams, Sammy White and Paul (Tank) Young

· Arrived at Grambling State in 1941 to become head football and basketball coach and physical education teacher

· Coached the first black player (Younger) to make it to the NFL

Soundbites from CSTV's Eddie Robinson documentary:
"America was the only country that would allow me to...play in the Super Bowl and win the Super Bowl. After that game, Coach Robinson was in the San Diego and I never shall forget, the one thing he told me that day was...he said, `You don't even understand the impact that you have on America...being the only African-American quarterback to do that'" (win the Super Bowl). - Doug Williams, former Grambling quarterback who later was the MVP of the Washington Redskins' 1988 Super Bowl victor

"We were all involved in segregation...and all of us rode the back of the bus, and all of us drunk from the colored and white water fountain, and it was easy for all of us to say that life is not fair. But I think, once we played for Coach, we realized that we could overcome." - James Harris, former Grambling quarterback who later played for the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL

"I remember, sometimes he would take a whole practice and just talk to you about life, never pertaining to football. Just about what you had to do and how life would really treat you if you didn't do those things that you really needed to do." - Andre Robinson (no relation), a 1981 Grambling graduate who played under Eddie Robinson

Encore Presentations of CSTV's Eddie Robinson documentary:

Sunday, October 17, 3 p.m. ET/12 p.m. PT

Sunday, October 31, 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT

Wednesday, November 10, 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT

GRAMBLING — Organizers hope to open a small exhibit of items from a proposed Eddie Robinson Museum in time for the city of Grambling's annual Juneteenth celebration.

Ruston attorney John Belton, a governor-appointed member who chairs the museum board, asked for and received the votes needed Tuesday to push for a June opening. The temporary exhibit was an idea broached earlier in a series of meetings to help jumpstart the long-dormant project.

Grambling Mayor Martha Andrus, an ex-officio board member, was thrilled with the idea: "Juneteenth would be a wonderful time to open that."

The Louisiana Legislature approved the museum in 1999, but the project was nearly derailed by a series of budget cuts and disagreements over location. In fact, the board that oversees the project hadn't met for nearly a year when these new efforts began in January.

Florent Hardy, a state archivist, offered to have a member of his staff bring memorabilia being held in Baton Rouge to display in this temporary exhibit — praising the idea as "something that would showcase the museum idea," Hardy said.

He recommended that someone from the university view the items to help with selection, and to take a management role when they arrived. GSU football coach Melvin Spears and others have recommended displaying the Robinson items in the foyer and upstairs trophy cases of the stadium support facility on campus.

The group also heard on Tuesday from John Arthur Jones, son of GSU's legendary former president R.W.E. Jones, who spoke on behalf of the Great Blacks in Wax Museum in Baltimore.

The museum has commissioned a tribute to Eddie Robinson, Jones said, and would like to join in a cooperative arrangement with the Robinson project. He proposed that the local museum display the new wax figure for up to three months at a time, on loan. The only cost would be travel arrangements, liability insurance and security, he said.

The wax museum, meanwhile, would offer referrals back to the Robinson project if people wanted more in-depth information on his life and accomplishments.

"I said I wouldn't get involved unless that was in place," said Jones. "I've known about the museum idea, and this could provide a back and forth in supporting each other in a meaningful way."

The wax figure, which Jones said should be finished in time for the 2005 Bayou Classic, will also be put on display at other events throughout the nation — an added promotional benefit.

In other business, the group approved an artist to create a logo, appointed Belton to push for support in advance of the next legislative session and discussed several fundraising opportunities — including the founding of a Friends of the Eddie Robinson Museum group.

Honorary Member's

Most of the list provided for the alpha's were honorary members.
From MLK to Manley to Frederick Douglas. Question? Does Frederick Douglas know that he is an alpha? He was given this honorary distinction after he was dead. Can we truly call him an alpha? This is the reason why the NPHC was formed, because of the alphas doing these types of things. (Look it up if you don't believe me) However, they are not the only ones. The vast majority of these organizations do these things for money purposes and to claim their accomplishments as their own. Whenever these lists are printed most of the prominent members are honorary. These same marketing tools are used to lure new members. Why? I wonder how many of these people would still have pledged these orgs. if they knew the truth from the beginning? Shameful. Some of these people never even saw the inside of a university.

How do you feel about this honorary thing and the way it is used to fool people?

;) Posthumous honorary induction OF COURSE precludes the person's knowledge and consent. Especially when you passed away in 1895 before the fraternity was founded. But none of that matters because someone obviously gave it the go ahead years ago.

As far as the rest of your post, I hypothesize that the average aspirant doesn't care too much who the famous or prominent members are and whether or not those famous or prominent members are honorary. I have YET to have an aspirant at the collegiate or alumnae level admit to me that she became interested in Delta AFTER seeing a list of famous or prominent and/or honorary members.

Senusret I 12-24-2006 03:32 PM

Here we go again.....

The majority of these members are NOT honorary.

Not that I have to justify it, but please let it be known that Martin Luther King PARTICULARLY is not honorary.

Otherwise, DSTCHAOS is right.... it's not like our orgs are saying "Join us! Alicia Keys/Hubert Humphrey/Sheryl Lee Ralph/The Temptations/etc are all members!" then you cross and everyone says "Psyche your mind!"

MLK was not an honorary member of Alpha. He became an Alpha Spring 1952 at Sigma chapter http://www.17th-house.com/chapter/lineage/50-59.htm

Most famous members of NPHC organization are not honorary members. Especially with Omega, Kappa, and Alpha. Alpha hasn't given honorary membership since Hubert Humphrey in the 1960's. Kappa never gave out honorary membership. And Omega rarely gives out honorary membership. In fact, most famous individuals who became Omegas, approached Omega FIRST, not the opposite way around. Therefore, inducting famous members is not a marketing tool.

You stated, "Some of these people never even saw the inside of a university." Most famous people who join NPHC organizations went to college. Yes, there is an extremely small number who did not, but most did.
