Congratulations!!

That's terrific. What about housing?
Now we need to get SAE back at Florida State, sooner the better.

SoonerSAE 01-28-2004 04:19 PM

CONGRATS!!!!

This is coming from a Sooner, but we can put the Nat'l Champ stuff on hold for now.

Congratulations, it could not happen to a better school or chapter. I have heard many a great thing from some alumni of the LSU chapter, and I know the tradition is there.

Best of Luck, and let us know how everything goes.

SAEalumnus 01-28-2004 10:30 PM

Congrats and Phi Alpha on getting the Colony set up!!!

The only couple of things I can think of to suggest are to network as quickly and as thoroughly as possible with local alumni (try contacting your local area alumni association, or pm me if you need help with this), see if there are any alumni from the chapter before it was temporarily closed who would be willing to help, and get your name out on campus. Everybody always tells the same story about only getting one chance to make a first impression, so show LSU what SAE is all about (just in case they might have forgotten ;) ). Good luck!

Good news

Seven years after drinking death, fraternity returns to LSU

(Baton Rouge-AP) -- Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraterninty is bringing a chapter back to LSU, nearly seven years after the drinking-related death of fraternity pledge Benjamin Wynne.

LSU's Interfraternity Council gave SAE the go-ahead this week to re-colonize -- the second step in getting full chapter recognition. SAE has had no presence on campus since officials bansished the fraternity in early 1998 following the 20-year-old Covington native's death in August 1997.

Wynne was found to have a blood alchol content of zero-point-588 -- several times the legal threshold for drunkenness -- following a fraternity party at bar near campus.

Victor Felts, director of Greek Affairs, says SAE was eligible for reinstatement in June 2001. He says the group is being brought in as any new fraternity would and will be ready, barring problems, to get recognition from LSU and the group's national headquarters this fall.

None of the SAE fraternity or alumni board members who were involved with the fraternity in 1997 are part of the newly forming chapter.

You know, to be quite honest, that is really a shame that no one thought of reorganizing the chapter before now.

Moxie 03-29-2004 03:47 PM

it's not that no one thought of it, it just really wasn't plausible until recently. greek life at lsu has been under intense scrutiny -- especially since the death of wynne, and in less than two years we have lost delta chi, phi delta theta, sigma nu, and delta kappa epsilon. housing is another issue - bringing a chapter to campus that either doesn't have a house or won't have competitive housing is risky. for now, SAE doesn't have a house but they are talking about renting the DKE house until they can build a new one. their old house now belongs to the Pikes.

WyoAlph 09-18-2004 10:02 PM

I believe some of the wait in recolonizing on certain campuses is to get all of the "old blood" out of the university before they restart. In some cases, the problems were so bad and pervasive in the chapter (instead of just a few bad apples) that many organizations would prefer to wait for old members to graduate and not try to exhibit any influence on new members and have the same problems resurface.

Any news on LSU? How are they doing in recruitment?

Louisiana Chi - Nicholls State University gets chartered early March and a couple of guys from Texas Chi will be in attendance. Congrats!

GeauxSAE 02-28-2005 06:34 PM

Louisiana Epsilon has officially regained our charter and initiated 36 men into SAE. These were the first men initiated into LA Ep in 8 years. We have a history at LSU that dates back to 1867 and were the 18th chapter of SAE in the country. Overall chapter size is around 46 men, after one informal spring rush and one fall rush. It's my understanding that we were the fastest colony ever to receive a charter (approved for rechartering in around 8 months) nice to hold a record even though we likely won't hold it for very long.
We had a installation banquet at Nottoway Plantation with over 230 people in attendance, including alumni representing every generation back to the 1930's.
It's good to be back officially,
Phi Alpha

Congratulations. Your story is amazing and I wish you nothing but success in finding the finest TGs LSU has to offer and making the SAE name the most revered in Baton Rouge. Phi Alpha!

The previous record, as far as I am aware, was the relatively recent rechartering of California Delta at UCLA which took place in approximately 13 months.

Congratulations!

Too bad the Reveille . . .

did a weak job of reporting. As a journalist, I'm greatly dismayed by this terrible reporting job. Seventeen graphs on the tragedy that contributed to the charter loss and one about regaining the charter. Shameful. But congratulations brothers.

Just an update on the Louisiana Epsilon Chapter of SAE.
Were gearing up for our second formal rush. Last year we were fifth in numbers out of 16 fraternities. The kicker was we did it out of a tent and not in the mansions most of the chapters that outrecruited us had.
This summer our housing corps managed to secure us permanent housing on the LSU lake. 14,000 sq. ft. home with basketball court, dock on the lake, 21 bedrooms etc. etc. While it is not the old house that has graced the cover of the Record on several occasions its our house and looking nicer everyday were in it. Our chapter is again ready to make the jump to the forefront of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and be the force we once were.
So in the 18 months since our recolonization we have taken 3 outstanding pledge classes, been rechartered faster than any other organization, received a nomination for the Zeal award and Outstanding Colony Award, raised $26,000 for CMN, Placed 1st in Homecoming with Chi-O/Sig Ep, Placed Second in Songfest with Kappa Delta, contributed more hours of community service than almost every other chapter of SAE in the country on the TGI day of Service, and had one helluva good social calander. And we obtained one of our major goals of getting the chapter housed again.
I've been told on more than one occasion that SAE would never rise again at LSU, I personally think were proving a lot of people wrong.

WyoAlph 08-12-2005 04:09 PM

Congrats.
