question for the boys

do guys think little tatoos are sexy or trashy?

The1calledTKE 01-19-2004 12:56 PM

I am not a fan of tatoos but I wouldn't call them trashy per say.

I agree. One of my three kids has a couple of tatoos. I wish she didn't.

I just wonder what happens down the line when the fad (if, in fact, it is one) goes away or reverses, what happens to all of those tatoos. I hear they're pretty hard to remove.

dekeguy 01-19-2004 01:31 PM

Trashy and terribly immature. To permanently mark one's body because it happens to be trendy at the moment makes no sense to me. I do lose respect for any woman who who has a tatoo. I find it incredable that women, who are so conscious of the smallest changes in what is fashionable, would make such a permanent statement that has in Western culture been long regarded as the domain of the bottom feeders. I think a tatoo is equally gross on a man and would think long and hard about dropping one on a rushee who had one. It is indicative of where this guy would be coming from, and in my experience he would have to really be an exceptionally strong contender to get a bid. I believe this position is pretty much generally held throughout the brotherhood as I have almost never seen a DEKE with a tatoo and the comments from the guys were pretty cold when the subject came up.

James 01-19-2004 01:40 PM

Trendy tatoo = trashy or stupid (As in I am drunk silly girl on Spring Break woo)

That includes trendy lower back tatoos, trendy ankle tatoos, foot ones and the ones just below the waist line.

For those people that are just into tatoos . . its different. Not my cup of tea, but at least its moe of an artistic statement than a stupid drunk high thing to do.

Kevin 01-19-2004 01:45 PM

I hate tatoos.

PhiPsiRuss 01-19-2004 02:05 PM

Trashy

If you go to a "gentlemen's club," all of the strippers have tatoos. Think about that.

Trashy as hell

Lady Pi Phi 01-19-2004 03:13 PM

I know I am not a guy, but I want to add my $0.02.

I have 3 tattoos. I love my tattoos. They are invisible. No one can see my tattoos unless I am naked/in my underwear/bathing suit.

The problem with asking other people what they think of tattoos is that you shouldn't. If you have to ask for approval of something it probably means you shouldn't get it.
I didn't get my tattoos because I cared what some guy thought. I didn't get my tattoos because everyone was doing it and I wanted to be cool. I got my tattoos for very personal reasons and I do not regret them one bit. I know when I am old and wrinkly they will not look as good as they once did. But that doesn't matter. I got them for myself and no one else.
If guys don't like that, then that's fine with me. I do not think it makes me trashy. But then again I'm not looking for anyone's opinion or approval.

For those of you who are thinking of getting any tattoos, please make sure you think long and hard about it. Please make sure you get something that's meaningful (not Marvin the Martian tattooed on your a$$) and make sure you do it for you and no one else.

They are not for everyone but they do not make you any less of a lady or gentleman if you do have one. It's your attitude that makes the person, not your body art.

As for the gentleman's club comment, there are many clubs that do not permit their dancers to have tattoos, and if they do they must be covered up.

DolphinChicaDDD 01-19-2004 04:08 PM

I agree with Lady Pi Phi.
I have a tatoo. And unless I wear a bathingsuit (or my track uniform, which is practically the same damn thing, but don't get me started on that) no one will ever see it.
I didn't get something trendy, and I didn't get it on a 'typical' spot for girls.
I thought about this tatoo since I was 16...and finally got it since I was 21.
Personally, I don't care if someone else doesn't like it; I didn't get it for them, I got it for me. And further more, if I date a guy, and after how many months/years he sees my tatoo and decides I am trashy, that is pretty shallow of him, and I wouldn't want to be with him anyway.

adpialumcsuc 01-19-2004 05:03 PM

I agree with Lady Pi Phi and DolphinChicaDDD!

I also think it is pretty pathetic of the rest of you to judge someone by something on one's body. I majority of females that get tatoos get them in places that are not visible unless they want to share them with others. I have 3 tatoos and have never once regretted them for a second. My parents were not hot on the idea of it but when I showed them they were fine with if because a) it was something I wanted and they are support me and b) I could easily cover them up. The majority of people don't know that I have them and would never think I would. Doesn't make me any less of a person and sure as hell doesn't make me trashy!!

Oh Yeah!! My husband has 3 also...all not visible...and one of them actually covers a birth mark that he hated.

G8Ralphaxi 01-19-2004 06:05 PM

I would never ever EVER want a tattoo, but I think that there are definitely "categories" of tattoos:

Something small, simple, not trendy, easy to cover up - that's fine.

Your favorite rock band du jour, Japanese lettering when you're not Japanese, or cartoon characters - that's just silly. Are you really going to want a Powerpuff Girl on your tummy when you're 47?

Mike Tyson - bad bad bad. I never thought it was possible, but he is even more scary.

So many tattoos that you have more ink than skin color on that part of your body (i.e., almost the entire arm, leg, back, etc. is covered) - yuck.

I knew a girl in law school who was an ADPi and one of her sisters had died in an accident. She was apparently a really wonderful girl and very well loved by the chapter. Several of the sisters went and got little pansy tattoos. (I think that's the right flower - my friend told me it was the ADPi flower.) Everyone got them in different spots, and all in places that could be covered up. The tattoo itself was teeny-tiny - a little smaller than a dime. Now, this I think is nice - a permanent way all those sisters remember her, very sweet but still classy.

I know a lot of Marines that have some type of tattoo symbolizing their service, usually on their shoulder. That doesn't bother me for some reason.

The main thing with a tattoo is that it is permanent, so it should represent something that has also permanently affected your life.

maggieaxid 01-19-2004 06:12 PM

I am so surprised at the comments that have gotten thrown around!

We were just sitting around my office talking about it today while I was on GC and decided to post it. I am not looking for approval. I don't have any, I don't plan on getting any...but props to the people I do....almost all my friends do. And no, they didn't ask for anyone's approval.

LOL do you seriously believe that there are not that many DKEs throughout the country with tattoos?

The1calledTKE 01-19-2004 10:36 PM

I don't think most of us were judging, she just asked the guys of gc what they thought about them and we gave her our answers. Like I said I am not a fan of them but I don't think they are trashy.

Wow generalize much?

I'm a woman. I have 2 tattoos that mean alot to me. I didn't get them because they are "trendy" or the "in" thing to do. I don't care about what is trendy, because I actually can't stand trendy clothing or styles.

You may lose respect for a girl who has a tattoo, but I lose respect for you for generalizing so much. That's like saying "OMG I heard all those Deke guys are assholes. I met one and now I hate them all." How fair is that?

dekeguy 01-20-2004 01:36 AM

Hmmm, rather sensitive lot of tatooed girls we seem to have here.
I believe the stated purpose of this thread was: Question for the BOYS, do GUYS think tatoos are sexy or trashy?
Question asked and answered.
For Carolina Cutie, yes, as requested by this thread that is exactly what I think. The expressed opinion is my own and I also commented on my observation and experience that DEKEs of my acquaintence from several chapters (including Beta) generally dislike tatoos.
For PM_Mama00, it occurs to me that a very broadly stated question tends to require a rather generalized answer. In my generalized opinion tatoos diminish rather than enhance a woman. You are perfectly free to disagree with my opinion but since this thread asks for generalized opinions mine stands as stated.

i love chics with tattoos...

hottytoddy 01-20-2004 03:58 AM

I am not a guy...but I kinda don't know how I feel about tatoos. I don't have one but I have friends who do. Some of them are cute...but I don't think I could ever get one. I don't know why--I guess I just don't think I need one. More power to those who want them though. Some of my friends have cute ones.

absolutuscchick 01-20-2004 04:57 AM

I'm not a guy either....I personally would never get a tatoo...not because there is something wrong with them or anything, but it just doesnt mesh with my completely natural look..

enlightenment06 01-20-2004 05:06 AM

It depends on the woman and tatoo. If the point is just to get a tatoo for sake of getting a tatoo, then there's no real attraction in that. However, if the tatoo is symbolic of something, or is some manner of expression, and it fits the personality, it can be sexy.

wreckingcrew 01-20-2004 11:53 AM

I will say that tattoos that are "cliche" i.e. the butterfly in the small of the back, etc aren't attractive. Anything on a breast, shoulder, neck, face to me read "trailer trash" (no offense to those that live in trailers, but y'all know what i mean).

Seriously, if a girls got a tattoo on her breast, i'm gonna expect her to be sporting a Fe-Mullet, be dating a guy driving an 85 Camero, and be a huge NASCAR/Harley Davidson fan.

Now, to me, tattoos that are discreet and have significant meaning to the girl are kind of sexy. If a girl has her symbol, initials of a friend who passed, something pertaining to family/school/glo in a "hidden" place to me that shows that she's got certain things she believes in passionately and isn't concerned with passing trends.

I have a tattoo. It's on my left ankle, and only visible if i'm wearing shorts and flip flops. It means a lot to me, it represents Sigma Nu, Texas, and Texas A&M. I'm extremely proud of making it through pledgeship and becoming a Sigma Nu, i'm extremely proud of graduating from a top school like Texas A&M, and i think we all know how proud i am about being from Texas. It's on my left ankle, so no matter where i go, Texas will be close to my heart(relatively speaking of course).

So, yes, trendy tattoos in extremely visible places = tacky. Tatts with significant meanings in discreet places = acceptable, sometimes sexy.

hottytoddy 01-20-2004 06:42 PM

One of my friends once wanted a tatoo so he & I and a few others went to the tatoo parlor to look through all the books of the skectches of the different ones they did. Well there were some strange ones....my personal favorite was one ov two rats humping doggie style with little hearts above their heads.

I mean who would get that. I'd love to hear that... "Yes, I would like the rats humping on my forehead please." WTF?

bigdu 01-20-2004 07:44 PM

I really have no problem with them as long as they are small and cute, like a little heart on the hip or something really small and not visable, nothing slutty though

mattpike 01-20-2004 08:34 PM

well

at one time i thought trashy. even though i have 3 of my own, then i met my fiance and she has one, and i find it sexy. its on her lower back.

sigtau305 01-20-2004 08:49 PM

if it's not too crazy, then yes, it's sexy.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: question for the boys

What does being hot have to do with being trashy? A lot of hot girls are trashy. Sex in high school is trashy.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 01-21-2004 02:20 PM

I don't know. The rats humping gets my vote for post of the year.

Peaches-n-Cream 01-21-2004 02:28 PM

I went to my cousin's wedding and a bridesmaid had a tattoo visible on her breast over her dress. I found that trashy, especially in a church.

I don't have tattoos and don't want them.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 01-21-2004 03:28 PM

NOT a fan of boob tattoos.

Or the ones around your belly button (after watching "a baby story" on TLC with a mom with one.)

girls don't listen to the generalizations...

Any tatoo that is hidden and in good taste (no poor language or graphic depictions) are perfectly acceptable. 10 bonus points for having the conviction to state what you believe (the story of a lost loved one).

Here's a little anecdote for the idiots that say girls with tatoos are trashy. My 26 yr. old sister is a beautiful woman. She's been through two modelling schools and dated a NHL player. She has always been in a meaningful relationship, epitomizing class and elegance. My sister has a small black sun in the middle of her back. It's a decision she made with her best friend when the two were moving away after college.

James 01-21-2004 11:51 PM

I wouldn't exlude a girl from dating by category just because she had some hidden tatoos . ..

I might not find a girl as aesthetically pleasing if she had numerous visible tatoos . . but in reality it would have to be case by case depending on how hot she was.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 01-22-2004 04:14 PM

and if the tattoo(s) were of humping rats.

I would have to try and hump her I fear . . . just for the story it would give me . . . long term viability in the relationship would depend on whether she did it better than the rats . . .
