Poll: Is MLKs birthday a STATE holiday where you live?

LAs newly inaugurated Governor signed the law establishing MLK a STATE holiday this week. I always thought it was...

Anyway, is Monday a STATE holiday where you live?

feu_declipse 01-15-2004 12:09 PM

I believe it is in GA. All the universities, private and otherwise are closed for the day

FeeFee 01-15-2004 12:10 PM

It is in NY. Schools, banks, etc. will be closed on Monday.

Wow, this week? I thought it was a state, as well as federal, holiday everywhere. I know Arizona just came aboard about 5-7 years ago, under the threat of losing the Super Bowl.

As Tom Joyner said, "now, that's some hate. you ain't never gotta "force me" to take a holiday."

...and Ohio is closed on Monday.

Yes it is here in New Jersey, but I find it interesting, well "suspect" that my company offers pay at time and a half for anyone who wants to work that day.

I thought companies had to pay you time and a half for working on all federal or state holidays? I know my company does, whether its MLK, Memorial Day, or Christmas.

I am not well versed in labor laws, so I'm sure someone will clear it up.

Its a holiday in Kansas. Banks, schools, municiple offices will be closed, but I will be at work.

Delicate_08 01-15-2004 12:50 PM

It is a state holiday, but I still have to come to work that day!!!

AKA2D '91 01-15-2004 01:03 PM

We've had the holiday at universities and in SOME local school districts, but I guess city and state workers had to go to work.

It is here in Cali, but I remember when I was younger, I went to private schools where they didn't take MLK day off. My parents made sure that my sister and I were out of school on MLK day, participating in activities with them. So, as an adult, I've worked for companies that didn't take the day off....well, of course I did...and would have dared them to deny it.

They don't offer the option or "incentive" to work on Election or Columbus Day(s) when our office is closed, that is why I find it "suspect."

tld221 01-16-2004 02:10 AM

in my planner, MLK day is marked as a US holiday. never considered it to be just a state holiday, but perhaps some states dont observe it. i cant imagine not observing it.

Unregistered- 01-16-2004 02:14 AM

MLK Day's been a state holiday in Hawaii for almost a decade now, I think. All schools, financial institution, and most services observe this holiday. They got rid of Columbus/Discoverers' Day.

wrigley 01-16-2004 02:16 AM

It is in IL. Schools, banks, etc...closed to honor MLK.

Augystskyz 01-16-2004 03:17 AM

Here in Michigan I believe most places celebrate MLK day but our new president here at our university comes from the UP (Upper Peninsula) and up there the day was not observed. We made sure she didn't bring those old ways down here though :)

Jill1228 01-16-2004 04:18 AM

Not in Canada! :) But I work in Washington State and it is a holiday!

Edited to add: The next Civic holiday in Canada is Easter. There was talk about having another holiday between New Years and Easter. I think the King holiday would be perfect...ya think? :D

Love_Spell_6 01-16-2004 11:35 AM

Delicate_08 01-16-2004 02:08 PM

Just yesterday, I was a little  because I knew we would have to go to work on Monday. When I got in to work this morning, I had an e-mail from my boss saying that we had the day off!! Now I can take time and ENJOY participating in one of our Service Projects. I won't have to rush during my lunch break! ;)

stardusttwin 01-16-2004 02:58 PM

My girlfriend lives in Oklahoma - it is not a holiday there.
I am amazed that something we (when I was in college) fought so hard for is taken for granted as "just another 3 day holiday" by some and yet still not observed in many states.

As an aside...my mom got a cd as a favor from a friends birthday party - she didn't realize that Stevie Wonders "Happy Birthday" was originally written in support of establishing MLK's birthday as a holiday. I made her listen to the words....she doesn't listen to "secular" music and never knew where that "new version" of Happy Birthday came from.

Unbelieveable!

In my state, schools have the day off. But, some workplaces give their employees the choice of taking MLK Day or Presidents Day off.

ykimber 01-17-2004 11:12 PM

Well I work for a bank so of course I have the day off. I know the Universities here in Ohio have to day off. I am going to say it is a state holiday here!

Also as a side note my university doesn't give us the observed presidents day off we take the day after as presidents day due to the fact we have MLK day off. The reasoning behind this choice is both holidays typically falls on a monday and they don't want us to miss to much of our monday classes.

rho4life 01-19-2004 07:41 PM

I'm not sure in CA, all I know is I had to work. Then the managing partner sent out an email saying we could leave at 3pm.

"Oh thanks youse massa', you evah so generous sah!"

Was that response he expected. Guess what tightwad, I'm on salary, and I already put on clothes that need to be taken to the cleaners. If you want to "honor" the holiday, then just give us the day off, or acknowledge that you're a tightwad and move on.

The silver lining was that so many other people have the day off that the commute wasn't bad :)

Ditto.

Yes, it was made a State holiday in Minnesota in 1987. But only government offices are required to be closed. School Districts have the option, but if they do not close they do something to commemorate the day.

Eclipse 01-20-2004 05:34 PM

It is a state holiday in Georgia (it bettah be!!), but then again so is confederate memorial day.  My job was also closed.

BTW, a state holiday simply means that state government offices are closes. Local municipalities still have jurisdiction on whether or not it will be a holiday and school boards have the final say so in whether or not a school is closed. Bank and post office closure is because of the federal holiday. You know the banks get every holiday! LOL

I think this was the case in Louisiana until last week.

That's interesting that they are instructed to commemorate the day if classes aren't cancelled. On Monday, I pondered whether, if I was faculty somewhere, I'd cancel class and risk having everyone stay at home and sleep OR if I'm ahem, force, my students to learn something about MLK, Jr., the Civil Rights movement in general. Haven't come to a decision yet. What are your thoughts?
