Alumnae/Alumni poll

Didn't see a thread like this. . .

Thought it'd be fun to see a poll of alumnae and alumni who frequent GC.

Post whatever of the following you wish to share:

-your GLO
-how long you've been a member
-how active an alum you've been
-why you come to GC
-what you still enjoy about your GLO/why you're active
-anything else you care to share

I'll post my info separately. . .

Janerz222 01-15-2004 12:29 AM

I'm an alumna of Kappa Alpha Theta, and I've been a member for almost 14 years.

I've been active in my local alumnae chapter and have served as both a district officer and international VP (not currently).

I love the friendships (old and new) and the leadership opportunities and challenges that Theta continues to offer me. I also feel a strong desire to repay the efforts of the dedicated alumnae advisers who made my college chapter possible.

I enjoy GC - keeps me in the loop on Greek happenings around the Greek world and is a mostly positive place to celebrate and improve Greek life.

Next?

Kevin 01-15-2004 12:42 AM

I'm an alumnus/member of Sigma Nu. Have been since the Fall of '99. I'm a founding member of my chapter -- badge # is Mu Tau 5.

Graduated last May. Proceeded to get the petition together that got our alumni chapter recognized by HQ. We're in the process of getting it going. I'm serving as Recorder and editing the chapter newsletter. We actually just sent out our bylaws for approval by email proxy and will be collecting our first round of alumni dues within the next few months.

I'm participating in my alumni chapter because I want to ensure the success and tradition that I helped start will be around for years to come. The alumni chapter will be there to give time, ideas and money to keep the active chapter a success as well as to basically keep us all together in the coming years.

GC was originally a place I came to in order to get ideas to help out my chapter. It's still that way. I get tons of useful info about what chapters of other GLO's are going through accross the country and how they are dealing with their issues. Pretty good stuff. And most of the folks here are good people.:D

AlphaSigOU 01-15-2004 12:54 AM

I'm an alumnus of Alpha Sigma Phi; April 20 will mark 20 years of membership in the fraternity.

I was somewhat active a few years back when my chapter returned for a brief time at the University of Oklahoma but all I get today is the occasional call from a brother and the fraternity magazine.

Now if Alpha Sigma Phi national headquarters would consider expansion in Texas, I'd get back to being active again.

I've learned quite a bit on how Greek life is handled today on GC, compared to those days of yesteryear when I was an undergrad there are a lot more restrictions now than in the past.

your GLO: Pi Beta Phi

-how long you've been a member: Pledged September 78, Initiated February 79 so it'll be 25 years next month so I'll be a Silver Arrow Pi Phi!

-how active an alum you've been
VERY-- I've been active in local alum groups ever since I graduated, advised a chapter for 8 years then became a regional chapter advisor. I have served Pi Phi as a Director for 4 years.

-why you come to GC
I enjoy the discussions. Since I work with collegiate members, I believe it is important to hear what they are thinking, what is important to them.

-what you still enjoy about your GLO/why you're active
I value the friendships I've made. I still get chills when I hear ritual (especially when it's done at our Conventions... having 1200 sisters singing and reciting the ritual is an unbelievable experience). I'm active because I had the benefit of some wonderful alumnae advisors when I was a collegiate and I felt it was important for me to give back what I'd been given as a student.

-anything else you care to share
Maybe it's a cliche but strong chapters come from strong alumnae (but not overbearing). If I want Pi Phi to be around for my nieces/ nephews' children, then I need to work toward continued improvement.

I am a sister of Delta Zeta Sorority

I've been a member since 1985

I am currently a part of an alumna chapter and held an executive board position last year. I'd love to be more active, but the chapter is rather far from me

The people! It's nice to talk to other people who share my interests, regardless of age, etc. Also, it keeps me in touch with the "young folks"! :)

I love the ideals upon which Delta Zeta was founded, and I love my sisters in the alumna group.

Re: Alumnae/Alumni poll

I am an Alpha Delta Pi.

I joined my chapter through formal recruitment of Spring 2000, and graduated from my university in May of 2002.

I've maintained very active contacts with my chapter of initiation, and have flown cross-country to help out with recruitment in any way I can. I've joined a local alumnae association here in San Diego, and have indicated interest in serving as an advisor at some point in the future (either near or far :) )

I began coming to GC to learn about other organizations and meet other ADPi's from around the world, and have continued to come to GC because of the people I've been able to "meet" through my conversations and meetings in my local community.

I still enjoy that ADPi is a strong sisterhood that is committed to its ideals and thoughts that were started when our six founders first brought together the Adelphean Society, and I maintain my active participation in this organization because of how much being a part of this sisterhood has made me the person I am today (yes, in just four wonderful years...I'm looking forward to the next 50 years :D)

The memories I've made and the people I have met through my affiliation with Alpha Delta Pi mean more to me than almost anything in the world. I know that there are more than 100,000 women who have experienced the same ceremonies and ritual that I hold close to my heart, and I am proud of that tradition. The people who've shaped my life will always hold a special place in my heart, and in the rest of my life, no matter where I go, or what I do, I know that it all comes back to my involvement with Alpha Delta Pi.

AOX81 01-15-2004 07:17 AM

I'm a member of Alpha Theta Chi Sorority.

I joined in 1996 and became an alumna in December 2000.

I have been the Alumnae Association President since October 2002.

I used to come to GC to get ideas for rush events, mixers, etc. Now I come to GC because I'm addicted, lol. :)

I still enjoy meeting the new girls and sharing my experiences with them. I also love getting together with the older members and talking about the good old days.

-your GLO: Alpha Gamma Delta
-how long you've been a member: It will be 20 years in April
-how active an alum you've been: I have been on House Association, an advisor or served on our Volunteer Services Team since the semester after I graduated, except for taking one year off in '99 to finish courses and change careers. I've been involved with one of the Alumnae Clubs for about 10 years.
-why you come to GC: I learn a lot about how things work in chapters of other sizes and geographic locations, and I enjoy the discussions!
-what you still enjoy about your GLO/why you're active: I enjoy the social aspect of the alumnae club and I enjoy helping AGD chapters strive to be the best that they can be. It's fun to be around young people.. I'm hoping it will help keep me young too! As a busy single/working full time mom, AGD is the thing I do for ME.

-your GLO
I'm an alumna of Alpha Omicron Pi

-how long you've been a member
I pledged in September 1983, and yesterday was the 20th anniversary of my initiation day!

-how active an alum you've been
Extremely active! At various times I've served as Chapter Adviser, Alumnae Chapter officer/member, and Corporation Board officer/member. I've also been involved with the reorganization of two different alumnae chapters and assisted with an extensive housing presentation for my collegiate chapter. Currently I'm serving as a local Corporation Board President and on an AOII Properties committee.

-why you come to GC
I enjoy chattering with others who enjoy greek life, networking with my sisters and having the opportunity to meet a couple of them, getting and sharing ideas (especially concerning collegiate chapter housing and Recruitment) and finding other alums who remain active. Unfortunately, we are the minority and I wish that wasn't the case!

-what you still enjoy about your GLO/why you're active
I love AOII. Quite simply, I would never be where I am today without her--heck, I probably wouldn't have met my husband of 15+ years if I hadn't been an AOII (long story, PM me if you actually want to know ;)) I would not be able to stay as involved as I am without my husband's support, either.

I was lucky enough to see actively involved alums when I was a collegian--women with families, full time jobs, and involved on the local AND regional/international level. I really believe it's crucial for our alumnae/alumni to set this example, so today's collegians DO remain active alumnae/alumni members. I'm active because I can be, and that makes me happy. Of course, there were times when the kiddies were younger that I wasn't as involved, and that was okay too. One of the biggest joys for me as an alumna was being told by a former collegian that seeing my involvement inspired her to remain involved as an alumna.

-anything else you care to share
GLO related--Even after all these years, nothing excites me more than Recruitment!

-your GLO Alpha Delta Pi.

-how long you've been a member I've officially been an Alpha Delta Pi longer than I have not been an ADPi!

-how active an alum you've been Depends on the need. I've been active in our Alumnae Association, attend the Panhellenic Scholarship Luncheons, have served in two different Advisory positions, am on the Housing Corporation, and we're currently working on a *new* project, which excites me!

-why you come to GC It's easy to talk to others who treasure their sorority/fraternity experience!

-what you still enjoy about your GLO/why you're active If you ever read our Creed, then you understand why I believe in Alpha Delta Pi.

-anything else you care to share I'll reserve the option to finish this question at a later time!

My GLO: Alpha Xi Delta

Member since: October 29, 1998

Alumna since: May 11, 2002

Active as an alum: Well, let's see. I am an active member of my area Alumnae Association and am currently helping to get our new website started (hubby's the designer), and am trying to get involved with our area's Alumnae Panhellenic. I also am a member of the advisory board for one of the local chapters.

I came to GC: quite by accident! I was searching for something and a link took me to a threaded conversation that had my search term in it, and I was like, "Hmmmm...." I keep coming back 'cause I have learned so much already and it's great to get a perspective of how things are done differently around the country and in different orgs.

I still love my GLO because: I'm new to my area (or I was when I moved here) and didn't really know anyone, so joining my alumnae association has helped me to meet people and get out and be active. Also, being a member of the advisory board is great because I can still interact with collegians and I feel like I'm giving back to my sorority now that I'm able to.

-how long you've been a member- Pledged eons ago.

-how active an alum you've been- Varies depending on where I am in my life. I was sort of active in an AA when I first got married because my now ex was doing his internist and this was something tht kept me busy when he was working. When I moved into my first home, I joined an AA as a way of meeting people in the area. We then moved to Albuquerque. There was no AA at that time, so I started one. When we returned back to CA, I was in a new job with a 2 yo so did not have time to do anything. I then got pregnant with a very sick baby, so even less time. When we moved to our current location, I was somewhat active until my husband left and I could not get to evening meetings with 2 tiny kids. Now they kids are grown (hoping daughter might go through rush in fall) so I have gotten active with the AA again. I help with our major philanthropy fundraising luncheon, and now getting more active within my own AA

-why you come to GC- Love to see the how much we all have in common while being so different. Great way to get new ideas to share with other members of KD who may not be on GC

-what you still enjoy about your GLO/why you're active Love the sisterhood. The community service is very important to me.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who's posted so far - loving this thread.

Ain't it great that your involvement as an alum can ebb and flow as the other demands in your life change? I always try to let collegians know this, so they don't think alum involvement is an all-or-nothing proposition like the college chapter experience is.

Keep 'em coming...

GLO:
Zeta Tau Alpha

How long:
Since Fall 1998...

Why I am still active?
I enjoy the sisterhood. I have not joined a group for three reasons: Before my wreck, there were no local groups in my area... Two years later after I recovered from the wreck, I went back to school full time and simply couldn't balance a new husband AND alum activity. Then, I found out I am pregnant and have been too ill to join... But, when things settle down, I fully intend to be active. (I am not currently in a group, but I still do things for ZTA.)

Why I come to GC:

I love to hear about the different GLOs. I love to hear all of the diverse opinions here. It's great.

What I still enjoy:
I love the fact that my sisters and I still keep in touch regardless of how long it's been since we've seen each other or how far apart we are. I love the fact that I can count on my sisters for anything and everything. I love knowing that I am not alone in this big ole' world.

Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity

How long you've been a member?
I've been a member since October of 1996 when I was initiated!

How active an alumn have you've been?
I have been the Chapter Adviser for Nu Beta Chapter of AOII at Ole Miss since January of 2003. I had to sit out one year in 2000-2001 school year before I became an adviser because my chapter's AAC requires you wait a year before you become an adviser. I am a member of the Oxford, MS Area Alumnae of AOII and I still help them with whatever I can do. I love being Chapter Adviser because it gives me something to do on the weekends besides church, shopping, and hanging out with friends. It also has opened my eyes to see that AOII is more than just a sorority house with pretty faces and parties.

Why you come to GC?
I stumbled upon GC in 2001 and I didn't really post that much. Then I forgot about it for about 2 years and I rediscovered it this past Spring 2003. I enjoy GC because it is great to share ideas and stories with other members of GLO's. I also like to keep up-to-date on what other AOII chapters are up to. This is a great resource to keep me updated on news events in the Greek world.

What you still enjoy about your GLO/why you're active?
I enjoy every aspect of AOII. I love meeting other AOIIs from other chapters and I find the history of AOII to be something interesting and something special. I feel since I have been giving back to my own chapter I have grown to appreciate AOII and everything that she means and stands for in her ritual.

I'm an alumna of Gamma Phi Beta (as if you didn't know:) )

I pledged in the Fall of 1987, been an alumna since Spring of 1992.

At the local level, I have founded an alumnae chapter, reorganized the local house corporation, I'm scholarship advisor and HCB Treasurer and am currently trying to get an APH going. At the International level, I am the chair of our Badge Task Force and a member of the 2002-2004 Nominating Committee.

I give back to Gamma Phi because she has given so much to me. As AC President, I loved welcoming new women to the area and I know that there is a woman who will do the same for me if I ever move. And I love hearing "thank you" from the collegians.

I come to GC to broaden my knowledge of other greek orgs.

i am a member of zeta tau alpha

i pledged in the fall of 1975 and was initiated in the spring of 1976, so i have been a member for .....good grief, am i as old as dirt?

i joined the local alumna chapter when i moved from florida to oklahoma as a way to meet people. dropped out when my (1st child)daughter was born and resumed membership when my son (2nd child)was about 3. held many offices, including prez. and served as an advisor to zeta chapter at ok. state. u. later moved back to florida, and started an alumnae chapter here in naples, served as prez. for 2 years and was a "cyber" advisor to the zeta chapter at east carolina u.

i love greekchat . exchanging ideas with other sorority women is terrific and i love the panhellenic spirit. i came to greekchat when our national website's "sisters-only" chatroom was closed as they revamp the entire website.
and of course i am addicted to the rush threads-it's like rushing all over again!

i love remaining active in zta because i get to meet so many dynamic women thru her. some of my very best friends in naples are zetas from other parts of the country whom i met thru our alumnae chapter. by remaining active i met a young woman who is a sr. now at fsu that i asked to show my daughter around the house and introduce to the newest members, who will be seniors when my daughter starts her own rush thread in a few years!lisa

I'm a Kappa Alpha Theta

I've been a sister since October 19, 2001

I've been alumnae since December 10, 2003.

I havent yet joined the alumnae chapter in my city but plan to very very shortly. In addition to that I do participate in some alumnae activities with the alumnae chapter in Louisville as well as Alumnae Panhellenic in Louisville. My goals are to hold alumnae chapter offices and be on a collegiate chapter advisory board or facility corporation board or both :)

My favorite thing about Theta first and foremost is the ritual. Secondly is Theta lore and history. I'm a nut for it! I cant read or learn enough about it! Also tied for second are the friendships I've made through Theta as some of these friendships i dont know how I got along without and others I dont know where I would be without. Third are the connections I've made through Theta such as job connections and recommendations or as simple as picking doctor's recommended by sisters (actives and alums).

I came to GC this past summer. I was addicted for a while. After the site was down over new years or close to it, I was broken of my habit, and now only come when I'm bored. I do however enjoy conversing with the Thetas here and the ones I've met here on AIM, as well as reading posts in the Theta forum.

I am a Phi Sigma Sigma.

I have been a member since Spring 2001.

I've been alumnae since May of 2003.

I've been fairly active as an alum because I became involved with the national organization as a collegiate member. Phi Sig leaves one or two slots on each national committee open for collegians, and if you get selected, you can stay on the committee after you graduate. So I am still an active member of the Expansion Committee. I have not yet really gotten involved with the DC alumnae chapter, although they're very active from what I understand. I'll get it to it soon, I swear!

I love GC for many reasons. Mostly because its an incredible learning experience - there are so many different perspectives on so many issues, it's kind of hard not to pick up new ideas and thoughts. I also think it's a great tool for groups to increase their visibility in a positive way.

I love Phi Sig because it is such a young organization, and is constantly evolving in so many ways. It's neat to watch us grow and change every year. I also want to give back to Phi Sig because joining changed my life completely. I love the girls in my chapter to death, they're my absolute best friends. So giving back is easy, because I have already recieved so much!

Hi...what a great topic for we alums!!!

-your GLO

I am PROUD to be A PHI MU.

-how long you've been a member

I was initiated on October 18, 1981 :) (has it REALLY been that long??? wow!) I have been a Phi Mu longer than a non-Phi Mu :)
I went alum in 1982 as I joined as a Junior.

-how active an alum you've been

I have tried to be a very active alumna. As with most everyone else, there have been busier times than others. I have served as a chapter adviser for two LARGE chapters and on national committees. I developed the first Phi Mu National Website 10 years ago before most groups had one. When I moved to Iowa, there wasn't a chapter to participate in (a Phi Mu desert!!!), so I organized one and helped chapter the Central Iowa Alumnae Chapter of Phi Mu. I have served in several officer positions there as well. Attended multiple conventions and Leadership Conferences. I run an email list for sisters of Phi Mu that has quite a membership, so I am active daily with Phi Mu sisters all over the country.

-why you come to GC

I found GC as a way to connect with other Phi Mu's across the country. I was looking for forums and ways to connect with other GLO members. I enjoyed being a GLO member in college and wanted to know about other groups were about. Keeping a finger on the pulse of chapters around the country and what is happening is important.

-what you still enjoy about your GLO/why you're active

I enjoy my continued relationship with Phi Mu for so many reasons. I find like minded women that I can talk to daily. I find sisters I can chat about life in general, and important issues. On my email list we talk about EVERYTHING friends and sisters can talk about. At my chapter level, it is refreshing and rewarding to work alongside women of various ages and stages in life to accomplish good things. I love being able to laugh and share time with.

-anything else you care to share

I have come to realize over the years, that some people "get it" about being a member of a GLO and others will never get it. Being part of something bigger than myself, with individuals that work to build an organization that strives to improve the world and life for all through many efforts is a good thing. The philanthropies we support, the issues we address, the lives we enrich, the friendships we forge move the world forward in positive ways I believe would make our founders feel very honored.

I have come to realize that the betterment of the greater GLO world serves the betterment of Phi Mu. :)

I do help other GLO's by hosting their national websites on my companies servers.

Go Greek, A decision you will cherish for a lifetime.

One of the best parts of being a part of such a wonderful sisterhood is all the new people I meet through greek life. I have been very lucky to be a part of a colonization process and watch a group form. I have also worked with some amazing women and feel as though my life would not be what it is today without them.

GLO: Delta Phi Epsilon

How long I've been a member: 10 1/2 years

How active an alum: numerous regional advising and international positions...in other words very :) Also the NPC delegate for our APH

Why come to GC: In the beginning, for ideas for chapters

What I still enjoy about D Phi E: I've made a whole new group of women my sisters now, through meeting so many people from different chapters. They are some of my bestest friends in the world. Also, the opportunity to give back to something that has so much meaning in my life is rewarding.

your GLO:
Proud member of Kappa Kappa Gamma

how long you've been a member:
Initiated in spring of '98, alum in spring of '01

how active an alum you've been:
I became an advisor to a different chapter 3 months after I graduated and joined our local Alumnae group shortly thereafter. I currently serve the fraternity as Advisory Board Chair and Adviser to two offices and as President of our Alumnae Association. And I want to do more!

why you come to GC:
I stumbled upon it through somewhere, enjoyed what I was reading and stayed! I enjoy reading the various opinions on subjects concerning Greek Life today (whether or not they're in line with my own) and I enjoy getting to know Panhellenic sisters from all over the country!

what you still enjoy about your GLO/why you're active:
Like many of you, I just love what Kappa represents and what she has given to me. In order to keep her Tradition of Leadership around for another 130 years, the younger alumnae--such as myself--have to step in and take the reigns. I enjoy helping out the chapter I advise and just want to give future generations of Kappas the same love and sisterhood I found while I was an undergrad.

Of course you may know! It stands for Volunteer Service Team and is made up of all our volunteers on an International level. This does not include the local volunteers. Hope that helps!

GLO

GLO- -Lambda Chi Alpha.

How Long- 1966, BX Founder in 1965= 38 Years.

How Active- -Restarted the Alum Golf Outing, Initiated the Alumni Association, Member of the Mentoring Team, Member of the House Corporation,, Keeper of the E-Mail Listing.

Why GC- - Very Simple, to learn. One of the best places that I have learned about not only My Brothers/Chapters, but Members of Other GLOS, and People from each and everyone of them!

What do I enjoy about My GLO- - It gives me the ability to meet not only The New Brothers, but keeping in touch with Brothers from over 38 years. When Brothers get together (The Old Farts), and talk about the past and The Youngersters say are you kidding, You Guys Did That!

Age Difference, there is None as We all enjoy the same thing, LXA! 18 to 60+ time is nothing when My Fellow Brothers from My Zeta or anyother Gather. It means something when I or anyother Brothet Introduces HimSelf, as Hi, I am Tom Earp and I am a LX!

Oh, LXAAlum, will be thinking Of The Brothers at N. Co. U This weekend! For You that do not know, They are Getting Re-Chartered!

your GLO - ALPHA OMICRON PI

-how long you've been a member - INITIATED IN 1993

-how active an alum you've been - I'D SAY VERY - I HAVE SERVED IN VARIOUS ADVISING ROLLS FOR OUR COLLEGE CHAPTERS INCLUDING A SHORT STINT AS THE ENTIRE ADVISORY COUNCIL -

ON AN INTERNATIONAL LEVEL - I HAVE SERVED AS A COLLEGIATE RECRUITMENT NETWORK SPECIALIST, A COLLEGIATE NETWORK SPECIALIST AND A COLONY DEVELOPMENT NETWORK SPECIALIST. I HAVE GIVEN PRESENTATIONS AT OUR LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE (OUR "GATHERING" DURING NON-CONVENTION YEARS!). I HAVE HELPED COLONIZE A NEW COLLEGE CHAPTER.

ON AN ALULM CHAPTER BASIS, I HAVE SERVED AS PANHELLENIC DELEGATE AND VP.

-why you come to GC - I LOVE CATCHING UP ON WHAT'S GOING ON, GETTING IDEAS AND LEARNING ABOUT OTHER GLO'S AND AOII CHAPTERS.

-what you still enjoy about your GLO/why you're active - I LOVE THE SISTERS I MEET AND THE STORIES WE SHARE. I LOVE THE "LIGHT" I SEE IN A NEW MEMBERS EYE WHEN THEY EXPERIENCE RITUAL FOR THE FIRST TIME OR WHEN THEY "FEEL" RITUAL FOR THE FIRST TIME. I LOVE THE EXCITEMENT THAT I GET FROM WORKING WITH THE COLLEGIANS AND I LOVE THE HISTORY I GET FROM WORKING WITH THOSE OLDER THAN ME. I LOVE LEARNING HOW SO-AND-SO CHAPTER DOES SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN I DO. I LOVE RITUAL AND LEARNING EACH TIME I EXPERIENCE IT. I AM STILL ACTIVE BECAUSE THAT IS THE OATH I MADE TO AOII OVER 10 YEARS AGO AND I GET SO MUCH MORE BACK THAN I EVER PUT INTO IT.

-anything else you care to share - FOR THE COLLEGIANS, KEEP ACTIVE AFTER YOU GRADUATE... AND IF IT TAKES A WHILE TO FIND YOUR NICHE IN THE ALUM WORLD - DON'T WORRY TAKE YOUR TIME AND STICK TO IT - IT'S BETTER THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE.

TO THE ALUMS - IF YOU'RE NOT ACTIVE GET ACTIVE - FIND YOUR NICHE TOO, MAYBE ITS WITH AN LOCAL ALUM CHAPTER, OR MAYBE ITS WITH A LOCAL COLLEGIATE CHAPTER OR JUST MAYBE YOU'RE CRAZY LIKE A LOT OF US AND ITS BOTH!! BUT BELIEVE ME - IT'S BETTER THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE.

-how long you've been a member
Initiated March 18, 1988

-how active an alum you've been
Served on Alum Board/House Corp 1992-2001
Chapter Adviser 1995-1999
President of Alum Board/House Corp 1997-2001

-why you come to GC
It's interesting to learn about other organizations and campuses. Helps me keep a bigger perspective for the adventure that is Greek advising!

-what you still enjoy about your GLO/why you're active
My brothers are still the best friends I have ever had! I've gotten so much from Phi Sigma Kappa, its like a debt that is never fully repaid. My involvement is the least I can do. Plus, unlike most people, I've been able to turn this "Greek thing" into a career.

-anything else you care to share
Get involved as an alum as soon as you can after graduation. It's much harder to come back once you have a family and have been away from it for several years. Get involved-stay involved!
