Yes, I went through informal Rush this past fall with Zeta and Phi Sig, and I've been to interest parties with DZ.

I know girls from every group through my major (interior design) and my involvement with ASID, but I know the most girls in Sigma Kappa and Alpha Sigma Alpha.

PKTKKG 01-12-2004 04:33 PM

Best of luck during recruitment!! You have lots of great groups to choose from. Let us know how things are going for you, and just know that we are all very excited for you and care about your happiness.

GPhiLlama 01-12-2004 04:48 PM

Good luck!

HotDamnImAPhiMu 01-12-2004 05:08 PM

I cut and pasted this part from a classic GC thread. I'm not posting a link to the thread b/c I don't want Manda to panic, thinking her rush is going to be like rush at a huge, greek-oriented Southern school.

******RUSH PARTIES********************

you will have to make an awful lot of small talk during each rush party. be prepared to answer these questions over & over:

1. where are you from? what high school?
2. how do you like college so far?
3. what do you want to major in?
4. what activities are you involved in?
5. what did you do last night?
6. what did you do this summer/over christmas?

if they offer you food or a drink, feel free to accept 1 serving. they wouldn't offer the stuff if they didn't want you to have it.

******WHAT SORORITIES ARE LOOKING FOR******

sororities try to select the rushees that they feel are:

1. enthusiastic about sororities (let this show!)
2. fun
3. poised
4. GENUINE is a big thing
5. dynamic
6. able to carry on the traditions and maintain the good reputation of the chapter
7. able to fit in with the current members, sharing the same values
8. confident and self-assured
9. positive & upbeat
10. intelligence

******HOW TO CHOOSE**********************

almost all rushees just sense which house to choose once the pref night parties are over and the time has come to complete the preference card. it is just a feeling of which place was meant for you. you will probably attend 2 or 3 pref night parties. at the pref party of your best sorority, the one that's right for you, you'll feel touched by the ceremony & feel perfectly at home . at the others, you'll be impressed but you won't feel that same connectedness. you should choose the house that has girls who are like you right now, not one that has girls that you want to become more like. choose the house where you had the best conversations during rush parties.choose the house where the sisters seem to get along the best, without lots of cliques within the house. choose the house that can provide you with the most opportunities, socially & for service. choose a house with a reputation that you can be proud of. choose a house where you'll have a great pledge class (you can see what your pledge class might be like by seeing which rushees are the house's pref party with you).

....... and from the same thread, different poster....

some other things that i know my ladies look for in rushees are :

~*~if they're mingling with other rushees and how they get along with them. (shows group involvment)
~*~if they're migrating to one sister, or trying to meet them all.
~*~if they know anything about the sorority ahead of time (if they took time to do research)
~*~if they take the time to see the displays we've put up. usually we put up pictures of sisters, big sis/little sis gifts (that can be displayed publicly) and information about our philanthropy.
~*~what thier reasons are for coming in the first place (if they REALLY want to be there, of if thier roommate made them come with them...although sometimes you can find a good pledge or two in this category)
~*~answers to group questions such as "why are you here tonight?", "what do you think you could bring to this organization?", "where do you see yourself fitting in with this group?" and things like that.

GOOD LUCK!!

I've seen that thread!! (But I appreaciate the gesture!). I remember wondering to myself if Virginia was far South enough to be like that. But our Greek system is very relaxed and fun, and we don't even have a formal greek row because the houses are spread out on the light side.

Thank you for posting this!!! It really helps ot organize my thoughts!

Buttonz 01-12-2004 05:37 PM

have fun and good luck!

Good luck, have fun, and keep us posted! :)

Can you tell me why an entire day has been allocated for final teas? You've listed it as 9:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. I keep thinking that those must be some awfully long pref parties... ;)

Thats a good question..my best guess would be that Pref parties are an hour and a half long and you can go to 2, but I believe that each group would have them at different times. So, you figure at 90 minutes each, and 7 groups is 10 and a half hours to begin with. But they must overlap a little, because there is only 8.5 hours for that day.

I think that begins to explain it...now I'm curious.

polarpi 01-12-2004 06:47 PM

Best of luck with recruitment, Manda! :)

Xylochick216 01-12-2004 07:00 PM

I think that post was pretty universal, for all greek systems - thanks for the quick summation, Jacquelyn!

Best of luck to you, Manda!

Good luck from a fellow Virginian!

Mandelion 01-15-2004 10:15 AM

Thanks for all the words of support guys!

Now I have a question..
This thread has got me wondering if I've really messed up my rush by posting on here. But, I figure anything thats been said up to this point is a little too late to change and be like 'oops, I never said that'.

I wonder what could be taken the wrong way, but at the same time, I was being completely honest, sooooo if it hurts me, then maybe I just don't fit into their ideals in the first place. But, in the end, I'm coming into this with an open mind, so why wouldn't they? We can really only wait and see.

Its way too early for all this thinking. :p

AOIIalum 01-15-2004 11:08 AM

Manda, don't worry about all that now. Just go forward with enthusiasm, an open mind, comfortable shoes, and tact when needed! Good luck!

astroAPhi 01-15-2004 12:47 PM

I think you're fine. I think it's alright to post what chapters there are, and where you go to school, but I do agree that you should use discretion when talking about the individual groups. The use of code names has been great. And in all cases (not just GC rush threads), try and be positive. If you absolutely hated a house, it's as simple as, "I wasn't really comfortable at orange".

I think more people just need to use tact and common sense. You, however, are doing fine.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 01-15-2004 01:09 PM

Astro, well said!

Don't worry about it, Mandy.

FSUZeta 01-15-2004 03:04 PM

mandy

if you choose to post during actual recruitment, use a code system for each sorority that has no relationship to the sorority. for instance don't name zta the turquoise or grey house & don't list delta zeta as the turtles(it has been done, believe it or not!)
best wishes that you have tons of fun and find your home! lisa

Mandelion 01-15-2004 10:56 PM

Back from Convocation

Final registration is over!!!
I'm soooo excited!! There are about 180 girls rushing and about 12 in my group :)

Tomorrow night my rush group is meeting for dinner, and we have two Rho Deltas who are soo sweet!

Some things that happened tonight:
-Got the rules. (Dry Rush, No Dirty Rushing)
-Saw a CUTE song and dance. (The Rho Deltas sang "I love being greek" to the tune of "I love Rock and Roll")
-Got my pin, got my schedule!!

Also, and most importantly, Silence begins tonight. That means no contact or conversation between me and any members or alumni of a sorority except during recruitment events. Although its unlikely that this would be a huge deal, I don't want to hurt my chances.

So, I have to request that no one PM me, and maybe even that no one replies in my thread until Rush is over. That may be a bit extreme though. I know yall know how to act though, I'm not worried about any *cough*join-my-sorority*cough* comments.

But, I will update whenever there is something to update about, and I really appreciate the support you guys have shown me :D

DeltaBetaBaby 01-15-2004 10:58 PM

Just so you know, a PNM can't really get in trouble for violating silence. It is a rule for the sororities, and they explain it to PNM's so that their behavior doesn't seem rude.

1 Day Down

Open Houses are over!!!!
And heres the play by play action (with code names)...

Tonight at 10: Post Office, I can go back to 6 groups tomorrow.

Aries: These girls are so energetic and bubbly. They were easy to talk to and there were easy transitions between people as they stopped by to say hello. Overall, they were all really sweet, really pretty, and really fun.

Leo: This group was a lot quieter and more down to earth, but just as sweet. A couple of girls looked like they didn't really like being there, but it was still early, so who knows. They talked a lot about their sisterhood and they were probably the most diverse, but close group of girls I met.

Pices: I felt the most comfortable with this group by far, even though I didn't know many people they seemed genuinely interested in me. Their answers to my questions were very nice because it didn't sound like a spiel, but their own opinion. They also had a really cute theme.

Capricorn: These girls were all really nice and very enthusiastic about their sorority, but they seemed a little out of my reach to be honest. Another really cute theme. Probably the most energetic. They were a little harder to talk to than most.

Sagittarius: I knew a lot of these girls, and a lot of them came to say hello which was really nice. They were easy to talk to, and another really down to earth group. My greeter made sure I saw all the tables, they seemed really proud of their accomplishments.

Aquarius: Very nice girls, and probably the most refined and poised. I met sooo many girls because they just kept coming and going, they had really cute cheers at the beginning. We talked a lot about their philanthropy.

Virgo: I like this group a lot in general, but they were a bit hard to talk to. The biggest difference was that they were so professional, and eveyrthing was very coreographed and rehearsed. Impressive, but I hope to get to know them better as rush goes on.

I've changed so much as far as my opinions now, I never realized how unique and cool all the sororities are here.
Overall, a good first day :)

Jill1228 01-17-2004 05:58 PM

Woo hoo! Good luck and can't wait to hear about the invites and the next round!
