wisdom teeth?

how many other people have had their wisdom teeth out? any horror stories?

i had mine out tuesday and i'm also looking to see what other people did to deal with the DISGUSTING taste that ends up in your mouth in the days following the surgery. yuck.

Unregistered- 01-11-2004 09:34 PM

I got all 4 taken out when I was in 10th grade. The surgery was a "pleasant" experience because each patient gets to select a song from the CD library to listen to while under anesthetics during the surgery.

I chose Meatloaf's Bat out of Hell I think. After surgery each female patient got a beautiful rose for being such a good sport.

They told me to eat light and bland foods after the surgery but of course I didn't listen. I had to have my rice and noodles...and well, you can kinda imagine what happened.

Rio_Kohitsuji 01-11-2004 09:43 PM

I had mine taken out in 2002 in the fall. All I remember is that I woke up cussing the Doctor out :o

I was okay but that's due to my dad feeding me Vicodin and chocolate pudding on 4 hour intervals when I was actually awake :p

DGMarie 01-11-2004 09:53 PM

I had mine surgically removed at 17 years of age. The yucky taste you have is likely dried blood and other accumulated fluids. Just rinse with water or gargle.

SATX*APhi 01-11-2004 10:10 PM

Had mine taken out in pairs. After the first surgery, I came home and mom took care of me. I took an anti-biotic and some pain killers and was asleep for a day or two, except for when my mom would wake me for meal time and to change gauze. I obviously had no problems there because if I had any, I slept through them. The nasty

The second time I wasn't given any pain medication and I wasn't in any sort of pain. I didn't sleep this time around and was able to manage.

I had them done by two different dentists, the first my cousin, and the second my usual dentist. I was asleep during the first procedure and awake during the second. Each recovery was different, but the one thing I did for each was to rinse and change gauze frequently. I still remember the taste. Blah! When I had my first surgery, my cousin gave me a small dropper that I could use to squirt water to the back of my mouth since I couldn't gargle water. I think the dropper helped so much. That, along with risnging frequently and changing gauze helped me.

Anther thing you may want to do, pop in one of those extremely thin mint sheets. Know what I'm talking about? An altoid may break into little pieces which may go to the back of your teeth, but those thin sheets disappear almost immediately. Maybe that will help.

Best of luck for a speedy recovery!

i had mine out in may of 2002. i hate being drugged up. i know i looked ridicuolous with my swollen lips and cheeks with blood and drool coming out of my mouth (sorry for the visual)

i am just glad it is over. cause it was getting to where i could not eat with cutting up the inside of my mouth with my wisdom teeth. they needed to come out. i get sick when i am near apple sauce now cause i ate so much while i was in recovery. i remember the first time i drove two days after getting my teeth pulled. it was the first time in a moving vehicle. i wanted to throw up cause i was getting car sick.

WARNING: Not for those under 18 or those with weak stomachs

I had the wisdom teeth removal from HELL. Really. All 4 of my teeth were severely impacted, meaning they had to be drilled out. My mom said she heard them do it. So when I woke up from surgery, I for some reason thought it wasn't completed yet and I was terrified. So I attempted to throw my mom a left hook. Luckily she ducked. On the way home I asked my mom "What the fuck is this stuff in my mouth?" She said "Cotton, leave it alone" So I promptly took it out and flung it, blood and all, into the floorboard of her car. Upon arriving home I crawled to the couch and fell asleep drooling blood all over myself. I threw up a couple times that day. For the next week my face was double its usual size and severly bruised. I had lots of pain, and finally called the surgeon. He checked me out and found I had a dry socket. So he promptly *ripped* the incision with no prior anesthesia. It HURT. He then packed it with something and sent me home to rest. I didn't eat solid food for nearly 2 weeks. Dry sockets are a bitch. I hope you fare much better!

I had my wisdom teeth removed during my final year of high school. The only day they could remove them was RIGHT BEFORE THANKSGIVING!!! :( We didn't have a real Thanksgiving dinner that year. The surgery was done at a dentist's office, and I was able to go home right away. I was puffy for a few days. Since I didn't know how long I'd be "puffy" for, I booked the last possible slot for my graduation photos. At the time, I still worried that my cheeks wouldn't be "normal" in time for the shoot. Luckily they did.

AlphaSigOU 01-11-2004 10:56 PM

Had all four of my wisdom teeth yanked while I was in the Air Force; two were impacted. Had 'em done at Bitburg Air Force Hospital, had to stay overnight because of the anesthesia. When that wore off and I returned to duty, the pain was horrendous, so I went back to the clinic and got more powerful painkillers and 72 hours in 'quarters' for bed rest.

tinydancer 01-11-2004 11:08 PM

I had one taken out a couple of years ago - I only have 2! The dentist gassed me and I was so high they could have cut off my leg and I wouln't have known it. I did not feel a thing, but since I was concious, I could HEAR him breaking the tooth out. It sounded horrible, like he was breaking every bone in my head!! I didn't have much pain afterwards, but it was about a month or so until I could chew on that side. My friend drove me to the dentist, and when I came out, she was mad because she was hoping to finish reading her Harry Potter book before I was through and she only had about 5 pages left!

KillarneyRose 01-11-2004 11:10 PM

Since I am such an evolved human being, I only had one wisdom tooth :D It was, however, impacted so it had to go.

I was under conscious sedation and, while I don't remember this part, apparently three friends of mine who were at Pitt Dental School at the time got to watch the surgery since my oral surgeon also taught there. I got to hear all about how I was gagging and drooling and all that lovely stuff

On the upside, it really didn't hurt although I was somewhat sore afterward. I really enjoyed the Percoset, though! :)

DolphinChicaDDD 01-11-2004 11:20 PM

yeah, i had those suckers out.

all four of mine were impacted...and cystic. the doctor freaked me out when i was half conscious by telling me there was a small chance the cysts were cancerous. all i remember is him telling me i have cancer (which i didn't, but i was so pumped up on drugs i couldn't tell what he was saying...i cried for about a day straight, inbetween throwing up, until i was with it enough to explain to my mom why i was crying, and then she explained everything).

my advice: suck on some tea bags after you first get home. the antioxidents or whatever in tea help stop bleeding. it really is true.

as a side note, i took liquid percaset (sp?)- best decision ever. i didn't have to worry about swollowing any pills, and because it was liquid, my body absorbed it quicker. i was only on pain killers for 2 days. i had a softball tournement to play in...i really intimidated the other team...me with my head not fitting in a helmet because my cheeks were so swollen, (my dr would only clear me if i wore a mouth guard, between the swelling and the gaurd, i could not talk at all), drolling blood every once in awhile, and barely being able to talk

aephi alum 01-11-2004 11:44 PM

I had all four wisdom teeth removed when I was 19. It was a fairly straightforward extraction, under local anesthetic. I was eating solid food the next day. I was lucky...

My husband has just undergone oral surgery to remove a wisdom tooth that should have come out 10 years ago. The tooth had to be broken and removed in pieces. It's been two and a half days, his mouth is still sore, he's knocking back the Vicodin, and he still can't eat anything solid.

We saw the same oral surgeon. He recommended salt-water rinses starting the day after the surgery (not the day of).

Take care. :)

Hootie 01-11-2004 11:51 PM

EW!!!!!!!!! I remember that taste! Though I didn't experience it until about 4 days after my surgery. I drank a lot of water and juice to keep me from tasting it...but there's really nothing you can do. Sorry!

Hope ya feel better!

ztawinthropgirl 01-12-2004 12:34 AM

OK just what I need to hear before I get my wisdom teeth taken out on Jan. 22nd! ARGH! Maybe I can back out?! Nah, then it could be worse when I get older! I just want to crawl under my rock and hide so the oral surgeon won't find me!

Kevin 01-12-2004 01:35 AM

Had mine out. Recovery was no problem for me. In my case, there was nothing wrong with them and the doctor said it wasn't even necessary. Insurance still covered it, so what the heck?

Stayed in bed for a day, was out the next day. Still not able to eat anything I wanted or drink cokes, but feeling pretty good.

ADPiSAI 01-12-2004 11:13 AM

I had mine out the day before Christmas, 3 years ago. They gave me something that was supposed to knock me out for the surgery (they were all sorts of impacted), but it didn't totally. I could hear EVERYTHING, and it really scared me. I could also feel everything that was going on (no pain though...), and it was just really weird. It wasn't supposed to happen that way.

As for the taste or whatever, I honestly don't remember. I don't remember anything from the 3 weeks following. I don't do well with any sort of medication that makes you drowsy, so the Tylenol 3 I was on made me a zombie, to the point where I couldn't get up and walk to the bathroom without walking into at least 3 things and hurting myself. I was more bruised and swollen from that than I was from the surgery!

I was also put under for my 4 "bony impacted" extraction. When it was over I told them I had a dream about someone punching me in the face. They said it wasn't a dream, I woke up as they were cracking one of the teeth into pieces for removal. So, ForeverDiamond, they told me to make sure I tell doctors about that if I ever have any other major surgery, because I probably need more than the average dose of anisthesia (sp?).

I also couldn't take the pain pills because with just pudding and jello on my stomach, they made me severely nauseous. I survived on 800mg ibuprofen and a heating pad. I also popped a stitch and had to go back to get that fixed. And I was "technicolor" (super bruised) as the surgeon said. But, I did survive. Although my stupid boyfriend at the time broke up with me about 3 days after surgery! At least my heart hurt helped me forget about my mouth pain. :(

Thank you!! That's definitely a good thing to know...

TigerLilly 01-12-2004 12:26 PM

I had my bottom 2 out last summer, with only local painkillers (shots in my jaw). I guess I was lucky: it was really easy, and I didn't need any other painkillers after the shots wore off. All I felt was some strong tugging, and then at one point the dentist stopped tugging, I asked "What's wrong? Why'd you stop?", and he told me that it was out! I hadn't felt a thing! I went shopping right after leaving the dentist, and went back to work the next day just fine!

Now needing/getting a root canal...that was seriously painful.

Ginger 01-12-2004 05:05 PM

I had mine out (all 4) my freshman year of college. Pretty standard... like everyone else said for the most part... I was out cold for the procedure, didn't feel a thing.

I actually had more problems with coming out of the anesthesia. It made me really nauseous, and that combined with swallowing blood left me pretty sick for a few days. After that though... no problem.

I recently had my last molar on the bottom removed, and I swear, that was worse than my wisdom teeth. I was awake for this one, and I couldn't eat anything solid for almost 3 days... it was awful! Never again!

AOII_Luv 01-12-2004 05:14 PM

I had all four wisdom teeth removed during my sophomore year of high school. I was "asleep" during the process so that part was alright with me! After the procedure, I remember sitting in the car, touching my face. I felt something really soft and thought those boneheads left a sponge in my mouth...I pulled down the mirror and found out it was just my lip! The part that I hated the most was getting my stitches out. They were in for a week so the skin pretty much healed around the stitches so when it was time to remove them, skin had to be broken to get them out. I started to cry a little cause it hurt...the doctor told me it was MY fault! Riiiight!

Anyway, my sister had her wisdom teeth out this past Tuesday as well! Right before her 19th birthday too! She is doing well now...she is excited to be drinking out of a straw again!

I got them done my sophomore year in college, and was put out for it. When I woke up, I bawled for like an hour and then got sick. Recovery was less than fun. I was in pretty intense pain for a week- then, after one week, I was completely better.

On a happier note, it was a good siserhood moment: One of my Theta sisters would wake up in the middle of the night and bring me fresh ice-packs... how incredible is that?

ztawinthropgirl 01-24-2004 02:48 PM

I just had mine out on Thursday in Greenville, SC by Dr. James Tankersly. I swear ya'll! I don't care if you live in California, it's worth the fly out to go to Dr. Tankersly.

I have no bruising whatsoever and they were all impacted. The two bottom wisdom teeth even had to be taken out in pieces. The two top ones, I don't even feel like he did anything to my gums. I have some swelling but it's not that bad. Of course, I have had to eat chocolate pudding, mashed potatoes, and apple sauce for the past few days but that's expected. It's Saturday and my bottom jaw is the only part of my face that is still swollen. I couldn't put the ice packs on my face because I have sensitive teeth and gums so the coolness made me cringe. I can talk and there was hardly any bleeding. In fact I only had to change the gauze twice after the initial gauze the miracle doctor, Dr. Tankersley, put on my gums.

The only bad thing that's happened is when I made it back to Clover, SC today (which is an hour and a half away) after staying at my grandma's house was when I told my dad he needed to get my stuff out of the car, he said really sarcastically, "Don't come in here telling me to get your stuff out of the car. You have to come in here and ASK me to do stuff for you." All I said was, "My stuff is still in the backseat of the car and you really need to go get it."

i had mine out one at a time with just a local. only one was icky. one got infected, but antibiotics does a wonderful thing and i had no downtime.

That's interesting - I just had two of mine out on Friday, and I was told specifically NOT to rinse and change gauze frequently, especially the first day. I was told this would prevent clotting, induce more bleeding and possibly cause infection.

I wasn't knocked out - only given a local, which hurt in my lower tooth because I had a bad infection (the reason the teeth were extracted) and the gum was pretty swollen.

I've actually been ok - they gave me painkillers which have helped out a ton, but after the first day there's been no significant bleeding, if any at all. I've used a combo of ice and moist heat on the side of my face where it was done and have limited activity to lying on the couch. Things have been good and it looks like the teeth are healing pretty well.

I did have to have stitches in and will have them taken out this week; but so far so good. Slight pain but nothing more.

texas*princess 01-25-2004 02:16 PM

none of my wisdom teeth have come in yet... I guess I'm lucky for now :)

winnieb 01-25-2004 03:51 PM

I had my wisdom teeth out the summer between my soph and junior year of high school.
I only had 3 wisdom teeth and they were impacted. They drilled those out, I woke up at home when it was all over. For the first 24hours I took regular does of vicodin and only ate mac n cheese.
Two days after I had my teeth out, a group of friends wanted to go to an amusement park--I told my mom I was fine and off I went. I rode roller coasters all day long. I was in a bit of pain that night--but not a big deal.

that sounds a lot like my recovery, except it took me exactly 1 week to feel "normal" again.

my teeth were sensitive for a while, and i was afraid to chew on my back teeth, but now the only sucky part is food getting stuck in the holes. GROSS!

ztawinthropgirl 01-25-2004 05:25 PM

I have a question about the healing process. The bottom jaw, where the two wisdom teeth that came out in pieces, is still swollen after 3-4 days after the surgery. The places where it's still swelling and sore is very warm, like I am running a fever in my jaw, if that makes any sense whatsoever. The two sockets in the bottom jaw feel very irritated. It's NOT like something cold running over exposed nerves or raw bone, just irritated. At night, I run very cold to very hot, and in both extremes, I can never get comfortable.

My top jaw and sockets feel just fine, like nothing happened there really. They still need to heal some but it's not too bad.

I am eating very soft foods like mashed potatoes, apple sauce, and pudding but the bottom jaw is just now starting to act up.

Should I call the oral surgeon tomorrow when they're open and tell them what's going on? Or is it that serious?

cutiepatootie 01-25-2004 06:55 PM

WOOO HOOO 34 and still have mine and proberly won't even need to have them out as per my Doctor....

You're probably best to call the office. It sounds like you may be developing an infection.

chopper816 01-25-2004 10:44 PM

just had mine taken out thursday, that day wasnt any fun, it was hard to sleep b/c m mouth bled for hours. my lip is still numb, so that sucks, and i just hope i dont get any dry sockets.

angelic1 01-26-2004 12:58 AM

i had all four of mine taken out about two years ago.. right before thanksgiving so that sucked and the worst part was swallowing the blood which made me sick.. that was really painful since i was sore..

other than that i dont have any horror stories but some funny ones..

for some reason when i woke back up i had this crazy craving for a slurpee.. so i kept begging them desperately to get me one

next they got me up to move me to another chair.. well they asked if i could make it.. it was like three steps.. well i started to walk and completely fell over..

so they put me in a wheelchair and some guy wheeled me out.. i was talking to guy's ear off and flirting so bad with him. My mom and dad were standing there dieing laughing

ztawinthropgirl 01-26-2004 10:40 PM

WAAAA!!!!! I have a DRY SOCKET! WAAAA!!!!! I called and they told me what to get to put on it and Wally World, which is supposed to have everything, doesn't have it! WAAAA!!!!!

Jill1228 01-27-2004 01:57 AM

I got 2 taken out in 1992 (they were impacted and hurt like hell!) I got the other 2 taken out in 96 (still traumatized by the impaction of 92)
