What would you NOT name your child?

There are people in Hong Kong who have names like Casino Wang or Apple Chan. They aren't translations of their names from Cantonese to English, but names that they've chosen (either for themselves or for their kids) because they just "want to". What do you think about this? I personally wouldn't use most of the names listed in the link below. Kids with names like that are prone to teasing. I like traditional names like Elizabeth, Andrew and Katherine.

I would never name my daughters after any of my future husband's ex GFs and none of my sons would have the names of any of my exes.

Besides that I'm not really against names...but dislike going against the traditional spelling (ex. one of my nieces is named Apryl Gaille  ).

A cousin mine has a name that isn't spelled traditionally. His name is Allun (or maybe it's Alun...not too sure, since I don't see him too often). Allun, not Alan, Allan or Allen. Allun. But he was born in the late 80s, when non-traditionally spelling was cool.

It was never cool ok? LOL Only trendy flakes did it.

If I had any more kids, I would name them John or Mary.

By the time they grew up, they would probably be the only kids in their classes with those names. Everyone else would be named Dakota Emanuel Genesis Wolfchild Britny Surfinburd Clark or something like that.

I have never really thought about what I would name my children... but i do know what I would NOT name them :)

For a girl, any of the more "old fashioned names" like Bertha, Gertrude, barbara, etc... those are just names i think of when i think of grandparents and great aunts.

Pretty much sounds like naming trends in America.

xok85xo 01-11-2004 03:15 AM

i would never name my daughter stephanie or michelle, because every girl i've ever met with those names has been either a major whore, psychotic or a combination of the two (no offense to anyone on here named michelle or stephanie). it was pretty when i told this to my ex - whose name was DJ. he thought it was because of the full house reference ;)

moe.ron 01-11-2004 04:10 AM

Polly Esther :)

Also, I would never named my son after myself.

sugar and spice 01-11-2004 04:45 AM

I basically agree with most of the stuff written here:

http://www.dwanollah.com/blather/092103/index.html

There are a LOT of things I would not name my kid.

Actually I'm getting upset because I've wanted to name my first daughter Emma for years and now it's gotten all trendy. Hopefully by the time I actually have kids it'll be on the decrease again.

My parents are both teachers and have taught at some of the more "interesting" public schools in central Florida. They've both told me stories about students with interesting names.

Mom had a girl named Pepsi, and a boy named Ferrari.

Dad always had the best ones though...a couple years ago he came home after the first day of class and had this great story:

He's reading the roll call with a new class, making sure he knows how to pronounce everyone's name, filling out the seating chart, etc. Normal routine, no big deal. He's about 1/2 way done and he sees this one name that makes him pause. He has no idea what to say for the first name, so he just says her last name, "Miss Smith?"

The young lady stands up and says, "Mr. _____, my name is Sha-Theed!"

My dad just says okay and jots down the pronounciation next to:

Sh*thead Smith

Dad showed me his class roster - the name was actually spelled S-H-I-T-H-E-A-D.

Hootie 01-11-2004 05:09 AM

Will, Derek, Amanda or Kylie......

TigerLilly 01-11-2004 08:38 AM

When naming future kids, I'll go for names that are good, reasonable, normal names, while not being the most over-used names of the time. Like me, my parents almost named me Jennifer, and I'm so glad they didn't, since that is one of the most-often-used names out there!
But then I *do* really like the name Felicity...that's not so "normal". Oh well.
Whatever I name my kids, their names will be spelled correctly! None of this Tifannee Maddelinn or Tomus Skott nonsense.

Random thought...haha, it would be really funny if some parent was trying to creatively spell "Thomas" (as I did above) and decided on Tomass. As in, Tom-ass. Whoops, like Sh*thead.

mmcat 01-11-2004 09:18 AM

how about prudence, iris, daisy, brutus, rose? yuck.

Whatever doctor actually wrote that on the birth certificate should lose his license!

My Great Aunt's parents named her Thelma Mary (and this was a long time ago so Thelma was ok) but the doctor decided he didn't like the name Thelma so he put Mary Thelma on the birth certificate.

What cracks me up is families with inconsistant names...like either the kids are: Kriestael, Aenthonie, Tanea, and Jennifer WTF? After all that and Jennifer? Or the opposite: Mary, Adam, William, Thomas, and Shaikirai....if you're going to be weird....just be weird (although I don't prefer it) if you're going to be normal, stay normal...

More bad baby names:

justamom 01-11-2004 10:09 AM

I'm with all you guys.

Some names should just be BANNED! Bertha is a pretty good example! I don't know why, but Penny bothers me.

For guys-Dick for obvious reasons. Once I met a guy named Pud. Where I came from, it meant the same thing as Dick.
He was Hubby's fraternity brother. I never could look him in the eye and say his name-I always started laughing. I'm laughing now just remembering it!:D

Here's a site of bad baby names taken from public records like the newspaper etc.

On that site, click on the right-hand link about "you think we're kidding, see proof here!" and scroll down to the bottom to check out that girl's name. It's some weird made-up name that is seriously loooooooooong -- and it means "child of the mother conceived by father's desire".

Ummm...yeah.

It says that the kids in her class called her "Kiwanis" but were trying to learn her whole name...sure, so they can yell
"Hey Kiwanisamanjajajajauggabuggablahblahblah, YOU'RE A FREAK!!!"

Poor kid.

AlphaGamDiva 01-11-2004 11:22 AM

lol....this is funny.

ok, i don't like names that can be shortened. melissa=missy, nicole=nikki....if they stay as they are, it's not bad, but i HATE missy. it's horrible. i don't like miranda for some reason, and crystal was the name of this chick i went to church with back in the day that was trailor ho trash, so it kinda doesn't sit well with me.

names like shananay, or shanequa also annoy me...they fall in the same category as bambi or mitsy....who takes these ppl seriously? which is wrong, yeah, but c'mon. anything that can all too easily name a dog (brandy--even though my best friend from bama is named this, ginger, etc.) also won't be on my child's birth certificate. ;)

some "old" names are pretty (claire, alice, emma, evelyn, etc.), but then yeah there's bertha, for pete's sake, or even worse, agnus.....yikes

i've heard several "shithead" stories.....as well as orangejello/lemonjello pronounced "or-onj-elo"/lay-monj-elo"

ZTAngel 01-11-2004 11:31 AM

Currently, my boss is trying to find a replacement for our secretary. There's this woman who keeps sending in her resume and her name is Precious Angel. Luckily, her credentials are not matching the job requirement but even still my boss was saying, "How would anyone be able to take her seriously with that name? She sounds like a porn star or a stripper." I would NEVER do that to my child.

sugar and spice 01-11-2004 11:40 AM

When I was in elementary school one of my classmates had a hamster named Dwight. When he got another hamster a little while later, he named it D'Black.

Now that's all well and good for hamsters and it cracked me up when I was in third grade, but I can completely see some people doing that to their kids. Maybe not as bad as Orangejello and Lemonjello, but still pretty bad.

Also, there was a girl that went to my high school named Patience Virgin. "Virgin" was her last name but I still don't know what her parents were thinking.

mu_agd 01-11-2004 11:53 AM

there was a girl i went to high school with who's name was Erica, but spelled Eireka. She had said her parents wanted it to be spelled Erika, but the doctor spelled it wrong on the birth certificate.

Taualumna 01-11-2004 12:22 PM

I also think it's harsh to give your kid a name from your own cultural background, that is almost unpronouncabile in English, or means something bad in English (unless it is a last name, which would be unavoidable). It's fine to name your kid something ethnic, but if it sounds like a swear word, then don't. Also, I personally prefer that parents combine ethnic names with non ethnic names. For example, a Chinese Canadian family might name their daughter Katherine Mei Ling Wong

PM_Mama00 01-11-2004 12:39 PM

Oh yeah I went to school with Jake Hunt... try sayin that fast. Morning announcements about sports were great when his name was said.

ETA: Alot of the names on one of the sites that are deemed "bad" I really like! Such as Jaden, and definately Brooklyn!

DaffyKD 01-11-2004 12:42 PM

I went to High School with a gal whose name is/was......this is for real...................not a nickname.......................can't imagine what her parents were thinking.....................were they thinking?.................

Twinkle Star!!!!

Planning names that are not too common can be difficult. I knew of no Amanda's when I was a kid. Fell in love with the name when John Jake's The Bastard was first released. Named my daughter Amanda figuring it was a good old fashioned name. You guessed it, 1986, Amanda was one of the more popular names. There were 4 in her girl scout troop!

Son is named Matthew. Turns out to be the big name of 1989. He was a NICU baby. There were 4 Matthew's in the NICU. Afraid to see how many were in the well-baby nursery.

One year, daughter had two kids in her class-- boy August, girl September. I kept wondering where April, May and June were.

I was watching "Babies: Special Delivery" on Discovery Health yesterday and one of the couples named their daughter Promise Elizabeth. I hope that girl goes by Elizabeth!

justamom 01-11-2004 01:37 PM

'82 babies had a ton of girls named Ashley and Kristen.
Just a bit earlier it was Stacy.

I also find it funny when their initials spell a word or are a well known acronym.

LOL!

Let me see, I went to school with a Penny Kenny, a Kandy Kane, and Pete Moss - seriously! Wanna see my yearbook? My mama went to school with a Rose Bush.

I know a girl who was named Memory, and I'm just hoping that she doesn't become big on top, if you know what I mean.

I'm also anti-nickname, and anti-cute-spell. blech.

All that aside, I would probably take a list of the top 100 baby names, discard those, and go from there. There are some beautiful names that just fall out of use from time to time. At least, I'd do that for a daughter. I would keep our family tradition and go for John William for a boy - 9 known generations can't be all bad!

NutBrnHair 01-11-2004 02:21 PM

When I was in school there was a rushee named Ginger Snap. (I referred to her as Oreo Cookie) :)

carnation 01-11-2004 03:20 PM

When I was at Mississippi State, the Homecoming Queen was a real sweet KD named Ida Cline.

I also taught a kid named Summer Winter Camp.

CutiePie2000 01-11-2004 03:31 PM

I know of people who have named their child "Diesel".
Like the WTH are you thinking people?

Like as not, Brittany and Caitlyn are a bit overused.

OleMissGlitter 01-11-2004 03:44 PM

I will never name my child Christy or Kristi....way over used! Also goes for Lauren, Michelle, Heather....I like family names but not names like Alma or Adah. There was a girl who went through rush a few years ago here and her name was Vera Special. If you said it fast enough it sounded like Very Special! I also know a girl who's first name is Dabbs! Down here in the South you get tons of hyphenated names like Mary-Katherine or Mary-Rainey. You also get tons of parents naming their kids with family last names. I know a girl who's first name is Bakewell. Everyone calls her Bakes for short.

carnation 01-11-2004 03:56 PM

Yeah, about the family names--our girls' ballet school has lots of kids from the private school and many of them have first names like Strom or Nash.

Also, our school librarian's niece is named Anna Mull. They didn't realize that it sounds like Animal until she was about 10.

DGMarie 01-11-2004 04:01 PM

I went to school with a girl who's first name was Rush. And she went through rush, of course.

There are tons of kids in my children's daycare named Hailey (or Hayley, or Hailee it is endless) and Dakota and Brice and Jacob!
