Things that make you go "hmmmm"
While visiting a friend I noticed something that caught me by surprise. She is not affliated but she has the artwork of a NPHC sorority in her bathroom. The color scheme of the picture matched the bathroom so I'm guessing that's why she put it there. But whyyyy? She's never expressed interest in membership to this organization to my knowledge. She is a very active member of several community organizations...wouldn't she be worried that the wrong person would see that?

I'm asking because I've seen artwork of a women's vanity table with items on it such as a mirror, bottle of perfume, hairbrush, etc.. It was really cute and although it came in a variety of colors, I don't recall seeing any greek letters on it. However, when I read at the top of the webpage, it indicated that is was artwork for NPHC sororities. If this was the case, maybe she purchased it not knowing it was considered artowrk for NPHC sorority members? If it had greek letter on it, then I don't know............ |
It was a piece by WAK. You know the one where sorority women are dressed in gowns with symbols, etc? And it was huge, belongs in a living room/study/etc not bathroom.

I would politely ask her about it. I would probaly say something like " Hey girl, I didn't know you were a ________! " and see what she says. |

Once, I had on a baseball cap in the drugstore and a late 20-something AA woman comes up to me and says "Did you go to the chapter meeting. Was it on Saturday or Sunday?" Well, I looked at her real good b/c I thought that maybe she was in my chapter and I just didn't recognize her right away. Then when I determined that she wasn't in the chapter, I asked if she was a member of the sorority - expecting her to say yes since she came up and asked this strange question. She said "no" and informed me that four women at her job were members of the sorority and had been discussing an upcoming chapter meeting. I was further taken aback b/c there is more than one chapter in Chicago and I was wondering why she would ask me this anyway. I was like ????. It was such a weird incident. She just walked away as if she randomly asks members that she has never seen in her life if they attended their chapter meeting all the time. It was bizarre. SC |
Well, I'm not one to use foul language, but I swanee, I'm 'bout to go off on the next person that says "Hmmm, AKA - also known as". . . and they have been of the pigmentally impaired persuasion. Do they ask me what it stands for before they say that? NO! And I think that's what irritates me (and that's putting it mildly) about it, then they think that they should do stand-up because they laugh and think it's funny! Meanwhile, I'm looking at them like this http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung...smiley-008.gif because I want to bodyslam them!

On the same note, two white people approached me last night at a training for a program that my chapter will be taking part in. They were super excited to "meet an actual, and young member of Alpha Kappa Alpha." Apparently they live around the corner from the Corporate Office and have seen our more seasoned sorors frequenting the building regularly. They proceeded to rave to me about the building and how the founders are on the wall :)(which I already knew). It was cute. SC |

Rainbow on a clear day.
I am in process of reorganizing my room again, this time I did something different I put some of my teaching supplies in the tool shed.
Several hours later, I saw a rainbow on a clear day. My interpretation of this occurence - God is telling me it's time to let my old career life go. |
I thought it was just me.
I visited a friend and found that his sister's room has a small NPHC print in it. I know she's not a member, and he is the only Greek in his family. He told me that his mom bought because it matched the color scheme in her room. He wasn't bothered by it because he knows his sister is indifferent to Greekdom. Even though my letters weren't on display, I was still disturbed that this young lady (and I use the term "lady" loosely) has this on display. I don't think she's perping, but she has no idea what she has on her wall. That's more reason that she should take the picture down....but I think it would be out of place for me to step to her like that since we don't tolerate each other well. @ Epitome: Do you think you'll ask her about it? Will you enlighten your friend or just let it slide? That situation would be really weird if she is aware of Greeks and how much we love and appreciate our organizations and displaying art and 'nalia to show the love. |

Hmm funny, cause i know a female at my school that collects Black art, and she had a 8X10 picture of a Delta girl with the letters and all. I tried to tell her that she should take that down because it could be misleading and her response was "I don't plan on pledging Delta, i just like the artwork" I just left it alone but....
What do you all think of this? Just curious:confused: |

Because I read the thread started by yellowflower, it sounds like the woman you met is perpin(sp?) to her co-workers. Since there are multiple chapters it sounds like she's preparing her lies for the office on Monday. Too bad you didn't get any more information about her, so you could give your sisters a heads up at her job and your alumnae chapters. This woman sounds like she suffers from the same thing yellowflower has I dub the mental illness pseudosororitysisteritis. As for people being able to have access items to perpetuate this myth, maybe installing a requirement to have proof of membership (initiation number) might limit perp abuse or as in the case of yellowflower(if it's true) a lawsuit for fraud. |
I have encountered a similar experience. My aunt (by marriage) has a huge DST picture, I believe the one where the women are posing on the letters with the elephant in the background, in her living room that she brought from a black art book. She was actually at one point having black art parties to sell prints. I said to her one day "Oh aunti I dint know you were a Delta?" and she just said "Im not a Delta, I was going to be one though."
I still question it to this day, cause had it been a Zeta print I would have "politely" told her that she needed to take it down ASAP!! |
I feel what your all saying, i know of alot of people who have that type of art in there house, but truthfully we really have no right to tell someone not ot have it in there house, i mean yes these are our org and we know we all earned the right to have these letters but if they said no there really isnt anything we can do not unless the org will sue them but i dont think that will ever happen, its like and illegal brother or sister which i know we all come in contact with at one point or another, all you can do is educate these people about what they have in there rooms and if they stil choose to keep it then its on them. With greek art being sold at your local stores its hard to get the message out there.
