I am running a marathon

I am running a marathon this June as part of the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training. The next five months will be filled with fund-raising and training. If anyone has ever been a part of TNT or ran a marathon, please share. I hope to keep this thread updated every so often, if you all don't mind, as well as my own blog, once I learn the best Web site to blog with!

KillarneyRose 01-09-2004 12:34 AM

Wow! That's very impressive, not to mention for a great cause! I don't have any advice for your training, since I can run about four miles and then I want to collapse and die, but I just wanted to wish you the best of luck! :)

GeekyPenguin 01-09-2004 12:40 AM

YAY FOR YOU!

Definitely keep us posted!

Congrats!

Train hard and go for it. Me personally, i only run when being chased, but mucho respect for marathoners. I get tired just driving 26 miles :D

I did a half marathon (13 miles) in 1998, and in under 2 hours baby!

Well, the way that I see it, is if P. Diddy can do it, then you can do it!

I would love to do a marathon, but I was pretty pooped after 13 miles, that I am not sure that I could do it twice in one day.

I'd love it if you'd keep us updated!

MareImbrium 01-09-2004 04:29 AM

Cool deal. I actually have a friend who also works with me did that marathon. She managed to finish it but unfortunately she was a little bit "injured" in the sense that she pulled some muscles and had to be carried off to the bus that would take her back to the hotel. I haven't done a marathon yet. There is this one coming up around June I think that I was interested in doing but I'm not so sure. Heck I even have trouble just doing a 10K one. I need to get in shape.

Congrats!! What a great cause and what a challenge!!

My boyfriend's sister ran the Dublin Marathon in 2001 for the Arthritis foundation and we were so amused to see people from Team In Training with GIANT Signs that said Go TIT!!!! I'm glad to see that they are going with TNT now!! All we kept thinking was that they should be running for Breast Cancer.....

Keep us posted on your training and how everything goes!! I understand (to a degree) the challenge you are facing - I am walking the Boston Breast Cancer 3-Day - 60 miles in 3-Days! So I'm venturing down the Fundraising and Training path as well!!

Maybe we could share some ideas about fundraising and advertising.

Good luck!!
And cheers to you for taking on such a challenge for a great cause!!

Ditto.

Runners are nuts -- but I have a lot of respect for them.

In a former life, I was Executive Producer of live telecasts of the Bolder Boulder 10K run each Memorial Day. That race has over 30,000 entrants now and was founded in part by Frank Shorter, and Olympic Gold Medalist who worked with us on the telecast.

On hot days, runners would line the fence outside Folsom Field on the University of Colorado campus (finish line) barfing. On the other hand, after a couple of minutes to recover, many looked like they had taken a stroll in the park.

Good luck to you and congratulations on a great cause.

Rudey 01-09-2004 01:14 PM

That's really cool. My goal is to take on a half marathon and then a full within 1.5 years.

This marathon in San Diego is the Suzuki Rock N Roll marathon, so there is a band placed every mile ... its a festive atmosphere from what I hear. I may try to incorporate a 1/2 marathon here in St. Louis into my training. I am really excited, but its a daunting thought at the same time.

adduncan 01-09-2004 01:42 PM

Congrats on your training!
I have become a "runners' widow" in the past year w/ Mr. Adrienne's training. He got involved for his health/fitness and he loves it. Even though he gets up at 5 AM on a Saturday for the "long run" part.

Next week he's running in the Haliburton half-marathon, as part of the Houston marathon series. He would have gone for the whole thing but he's sucking down Mestinon like Pez for his eye condition, and he cramps up at 14 miles.

Good luck--I'm not a runner (never have been, never will be, give me a pool w/ racing lanes any day.....) but of all the things in life to get hooked on, this is a good one.

MeLikey 01-09-2004 10:27 PM

Good luck! I've always wanted to run a marathon. But since I never maintained my exercising after high school (ran track and cross country), I get winded easily.

tri-d 01-10-2004 10:14 AM

Good luck on the marathon! Which one are you doing? I have done one in Wisconsin as well as a few half marathons in Arizona and the Vegas marathon. The Vegas and Tuscon courses were great, though Vegas was a little too windy last year when I ran.
My goal is still to qualify for Boston, and I am thinking about trying to do it at the Tuscon course since I liked that one so much--gives me plenty of time since that isn't until December. My only advice is to train exactly how you plan to run the race--I made the novice mistake of training with water and then during the race drank PowerAid which ended up giving me stomach cramps and killed my time.

Good Luck and enjoy yourself!

DeltaBetaAGD 02-15-2004 10:39 PM

Hi! I am also training for this marathon with Team In Training. It is a strict training program but so far it is working for me perfectly! Good luck with your training.

See you in San Diego!

alphachiohmy 02-20-2004 07:47 PM

This is the post where I get on my knees and beg for donations .... kidding ... well, at least half way. I am raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and am asking your help once. If you might be interested in learning how you can contribute, what I am doing, and more about Team in Training, send me a pm and well go from there. Its a really good cause!!

Thanks,
Rhonda

alphachiohmy 02-29-2004 10:36 AM

i discovered goo!!! ( yesterday while we did 10 miles)

i like goo (its cliff notes strawberry gel stuff that kicks in energy, etc. after you start into your run) good stuff

we also had a social with Michael and Ryan our TNT honored teammates - both have had leukemia and are now in remission. we heard more about their stories and met their families as well as other people on our team, good food, cute kids and a greater understanding of the whole reason TNT exists!

Oh, again if anyone wants to know more or donate to my cause ... let me know!

alphachiohmy 04-04-2004 04:06 PM

So, training has been going OK. Fundraising OK, too. I have sent out 200-plus letters to friends and families and planned a night out at an area bar, and a canister drive and a pie-throwing event. Hopefully, it will all come together.

This morning I did my first half-marathon here in St. Louis - I am also doing a half in Nashville. San Diego is 2 months away. My time this morning was 2hours 52 minutes at a run/walk combo - thats about a 13 minute pace. I am so psyched about how I did and now have a little bit of pace idea to work with in training since I don't carry a watch.

The half was incredibly fun but also hard - so different from our long training runs. Even though when we train we have been going about 12 miles for the last month, this was different from those in that it was way more intense. Intense in a good way.

The other people in this marathon/half were amazing - so many different types.

I actually never "hit the wall," where you absolutely can't go or do much more. However, I got really emotional at mile 12 when I realized my time.

I just woke up from a small nap, and now its back to the real world - cleaning, homework, etc.

alphachiohmy 05-16-2004 06:15 PM

Did 20 miles today. I hurt. It was so ughhh feeling. I have blisters and began to wonder what in the heck I had gotten myself into on the last two miles in. But the good thing is that it is all down hill from here, we begin tapering back mileage.

lifesaver 05-17-2004 06:06 AM

Have they always had this marathon? Has it always been this big?

I ask becasue I have never heard of it until this year and now I have 3 friends who are training for it and now several of ya'll on here are training too. I think its really cool tho. Good luck all.

SSS1365 05-17-2004 07:42 AM

Good luck :)

I have a friend who's doing the one in Alaska. For a while, it didn't look like she was going to be able to raise the $4,200 but she did it! She's really excited about running the marathon.

Its been around for a while, I think. You can go to www.rnrmarathon.com for more information. I guess about 15,000 people or more will be there.

XOMichelle 05-17-2004 12:08 PM

I've never run a marathon, so I have no advice.
Good luck! I know you will finish with flying colors!

PlymouthDZ 05-17-2004 01:32 PM

Bets of luck to you!!!

That is great that you're running it for such a great cause. I haven't done a marathon, but I've done the 3 Day Walks for Breast Cancer and a couple others like that. Nothing too exciting. :p My uncle on the other hand, runs the Boston Marathon every year.

Anyways... GOOD LUCK! :D

Xylochick216 05-17-2004 01:36 PM

Good luck! I'm so impressed :) I don't know that I would have the dedication for all the training it takes!

alphachiohmy 05-17-2004 05:55 PM

thanks for the well wishes they help ... a day later and i am still achey. yesterday was tough mentally, but i am told it gets easier during the actual event in part because of adrenaline and the crowd

krazy 05-19-2004 01:38 PM

Alpha... I have run many a marathon. Let me give you one word of advice. VASOLINE. I know you have heard this before, but when I say put it everywhere, I mean literally, or you will start to bleed in places you didn't know you had. Good luck, you will love it. LOVE IT.

And remember, more people drop out at 20 miles than at any other point. So, even if you have talked yourself out of finishing (which you won't) make yourself go to mile 21. It looks a lot less daunting at 21 than 20. It is strange, but true. As they say, "20 miles is the halfway point of the marathon"...

It will be so fun, you won't even know you are hurting;)
Seriously, the first 15 miles will pass b4 you know it.

Tom Earp 05-19-2004 06:04 PM

Other than being stone crazy, stretch your Thigh and Calf muscles.. God make me horney!:D

You have a lot of guts and The Very Best of Luck!

Breath, Breath and Breath! Run like the wind, think good thoughts and Smile!:)

Actually a few gin and tonics wouldnt hurt!:D

By the way, I've read before that while training for marathons, you don't really have to run more than 12 or so miles at a time. I'm not sure why, but I think I read that in a running magazine in high school. Does anyone know if that's true?

Hmmm, bad idea. Could it be done? Sure. Bad Idea...

Hey!! I'm doing TNT too!! Except I'm only running a half marathon( trying to be realistic here :p ), and mine's not until September. I'm doing to Rock and Roll half marathon in Virginia Beach-I'm so excited!! How is your fundraising going?? I have no clue how I'm going to raise all my money-any tips you have on what worked for you would be greatly appreciated!!

Best of luck!!

alphachiohmy 05-20-2004 07:00 PM

Congratulations on getting involved with TNT ... My advice on fundraising is to really take advantage of your mentor and TNT staff. Do your letters - early and send to everyone you know, take a photo with you and honored teammate, Do canister drives at Walmart sign up for dates early. Ask, ask and ask people ... you will be suprised at who gives what. Try to do a bar/restaurant fundraiser - if you are into that kind of thing, there are dozens of ways to do this. Good luck.

alphachiohmy 05-20-2004 07:02 PM

I have heard BodyGlide works better. I am really a minimalist - did two halfs and all long training sans sunscreen or bodyglide ... I know thats not great. I promise I will change for SD. :)

Seriously, Great cause. Best of luck.

You know, I have been waiting for an update... How did it go?

alphachiohmy 06-14-2004 08:55 PM

Oh, all was good.

Finished under goal time in 5h47m and something seconds. Ran the first half and had a blast ... last half it got hard as heck and very rough on mental, emotional and physical levels. San Diego is beautiful.

Here are photos ... although no one can laugh at the last two ... especially the one with my eyes closed!!

More to come soon, I promise.
