R Kelly is nominated for an NAACP Image Award

Well Sorors, I really needed to open this up for discussion. I hadn't seen any other thread pertaining to this but if there is one either here or on another group's page, that is fine, they can be merged. I am a little disturbed by this. I heard about it this evening on the Bill O'Reilly show on Fox News and, of course, him being a conservative, he may have spun the details a certain way. However, I am still wondering why the NAACP would nominate him. In my opinion, even without the currently pending child pormography charges, his music, while I bob my head to it, is not very positively infuential. Aside from his "I believe I Can Fly" song, he pretty much makes song after song about elicit sex and groping women. I just believe or feel that there are others who would make better nominees than him. Yes, the charges do not equal guilt, but again, in a more symbolic light, is this someone THE best someone who should be honored by an IMAGE award by African Americans? I would just be interested in hearing some views on this. It honestly upset me.

doesnt r get an award like this every year? and doesnt he say the same thing every year? "thanks for supporting my music and my career through everything..." and dont we as a ppl question it every year: "hes nasty, he touches grls. his music is raunchy, etc"

but he has more awards sitting on his mantelpiece than any of us do.

Soror,
I think the real question is why WE continue to support organizations like the NAACP. The org did a lot of great stuff back in the day, but I doubt the Honorable Thurgood Marshall would be ok with R. Kelly being honored. ALTHOUGH he has NOT been proven guilty in a court of law....what is the NAACP thinking???

AKA2D '91 01-16-2004 11:37 AM

Sad state of "us"

They are probably thinking about 'who's hot'.

It's too late to NOT uplift Rra. That should have been done when the allegations surfaced a few years ago....when he married a teen.

As soon as Chocolate Factory hit the stands folks bought it! Who came out to say DON'T BUY HIS MUSIC? DON'T GO TO HIS CONCERTS? I don't remember hearing about any protests. His concert sold out here almost immediately. His songs are allllllll over the radio. Most of the songs on the air by other artists are written by Rra.

I guess it's the day and time we live in.
No accountability....

stardusttwin 01-16-2004 03:52 PM

Its not just you and it may seem minor but this is one of the many reasons why I'm no longer a member of the NAACP. We used to honor and uplift those of us who were putting out quality work but were not recognized in mainstream media. I agree its now just fill in for who's popular with a certain age demographic...

Nominations that make me say

-Omar Tyree vs. alice Walker,Toni Morrison & Nikki Giovanni???

-106& Park vs. The Murder of Emmitt Till & Readings from Slave Narratives???

Personally I don't buy Rra's music anymore, (although "Step to the name of Love" is mad cute), but I can not and will not support him. I guess until he violates your daughter he will constanly be forgiven by many.

R.

I admire his musical talent, however, he needs a good therapist. Clearly he has exhibited a pattern of unhealthy behavior - which should not be ignored b/c of his celebrity and success.

How many other talented producers are out there who's biggest offense against society is a parking ticket? Are people worried that if we don't shine the spotlight on R that there will not be others who will step up and shine?

To me, the problem is larger than the NCAAP. The problem is some black people don't want to say ANYTHING negative about another black person, for fear of not presenting a united front. "Claiming" a person whose negative acts balance or outweigh their positive acts does nothing to benefit "us" as a group.

We have to start cleaning up our own mess, and the problem is much larger than the NAACP, that I do agree with. I just suspect that there's a strain of nihilism in us that just can't be snuffed.

mstwinkle 01-16-2004 05:16 PM

I'm not a R kelly fanatic but I do own the Chocolate Factory CD and I also went to see him in concert in NYC this summer.

Do I think it makes me a bad person? Absolutely not! It is not for me to judge R-rah..I did not and do not intend to see that tape

**wouldn't that be equivalent to me watching child pornography?**

The thing that gets me is you always hear the allegations but you NEVER hear from the victim's family, friends, acquaintances, enemies...SOMEONE, ANYONE who has some insight as to what 'really' happened.

The NAACP didn't nominate him for outstanding MAN or Best Role Model, the nomination is for outstanding album. Over the past year he did have one of the best albums.

I'm definitely not making excuses for him, but we can't always rush to be the judge and jury.

Dave Matthews Band to Receive NAACP Award
(AP, 01/27/2004 7:29 AM)

Dave Matthews Band will receive the special Chairman's Award at the upcoming NAACP Image Awards for its devotion to social and environmental causes and its "dignified representation of people of color," the civil rights group has announced.

With the awards, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People honors people and companies that support positive change for people of color in arts and entertainment. The honor will be bestowed at the March 6 awards ceremony in Los Angeles. Fox will broadcast the program on March 11.

The racially mixed music group includes drummer Carter Beauford, bassist Stefan Lessard, vocalist-guitarist Dave Matthews, saxophonist Leroi Moore and violinist Boyd Tinsley.

NAACP Board Chairman Julian Bond, who chose the group for the special award, praised band members for their distinguished service to social causes and dignified representation of people of color.

"Dave Matthews Band demonstrated what commitment means in an artist. With their music and their generosity, they have made a difference in the lives of many," Bond said. "To see and hear them is to recognize great talent; to learn of their good deeds is to recognize they are good souls."

Dave Matthews Band released a statement Sunday saying, "It is a great honor to us that an institution with the history and accomplishments of the NAACP has chosen to recognize our actions. We will always greatly value this award."

The group's Bama Works Foundation has donated millions of dollars in grants to a variety of groups around the world, including conservation organizations for the Amazon rain forest , family farmers, youth community clubs and AIDS charities.

Previous NAACP Chairman's Award recipients include actor Danny Glover , cartoonist Aaron McGruder and singer-actress Janet Jackson .

Board To Consider Changes In Image Award Nominating Process
Board of Directors to consider rejecting Image Award entries that do not fit positive image The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Board of Directors has voted to consider changes in the Image Award nominating process to prevent the nomination of individuals that do not meet new guidelines currently under review. During its quarterly meeting in New York on February 21, 2004, Board members approved a motion to review changes that would include the makeup of the Committee of 300, the group that chooses the nominees. The committee will also consider inserting a morals clause in the nominating requirement.

Julian Bond, Board chair, said, "We want to set up a procedure for the Committee of 300 and the president and chief executive officer to initiate procedures to protect and preserve the image of the Image Awards."

Under a proposal introduced by President and CEO Kweisi Mfume, the Committee of 300 would be composed entirely of NAACP leaders and members. Currently the Committee is split evenly between NAACP members and members of the television, recording, movie and publishing industry.

Mfume said: "It is important that we bring the nominating process completely under the control of the association for the first time in the 35-year history of the awards program. For some time it has concerned me that too often Image Award nominees fail to meet the standards for positive images on which the program was created. With today's action by the Board I am confident that in the future we will have a better control of the nominating process. It's important that Image Award nominees be able to do more than sing, dance, write and act."

NAACP members in a secret ballot choose the final Image Award winners, who are announced during the taping of the 35th annual Image Awards program on March 6. The special program airs on FOX television on March 11.

The NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. Its half-million adult and youth members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities and monitor equal opportunity in the public and private sectors.

AKA2D '91 03-05-2004 12:14 PM

ummmm. uhhh. errr. uhhh! Ray Charles could see this. Why would you include the word IMAGE with your award title when those who you NOMINATE don't fit an IMAGE that is positive?

It's about time!

:o oh my word! :p

But the awards are IMAGE awards. IMO, if you are going to give an IMAGE award, make sure that the person has a respectable IMAGE.

There are ways around anything. Even if R. Kelly had a great year in terms of record sales, the NAACP, if the org really wanted to, probably could have done some behind the scene work to just give him a nod but not a nomination. It is, after all the NAACP. It's not just some joe-shmoe org giving the award and I would hope that they realize that the people that they nominate and award receive, to some extent, an endorsement from them.

That's so funny that you say that because she just played a drag queen/transexual on All of US (the Duane Martin/LisaRaye show--I think that is the name of it). Tyra also looks slightly preggo as well.

Why do they have the little girl from Bernie Mac looking like an old lady?? both of them actually. Girls that young should not wear black formal dresses. I nice pastel color would have been so much better on both of them!

Thank you. I'm not a mom, but I agree with this. Childpeople shouldn't wear anything black and formal until they are in their teens.

Yes, those two girls look like old, OLD women!! Does anyone know who won in the drama catagories? I read about everyone else in today's newspaper but I could not seem to find who won in those catagories. I want to see if my other Hubby won. ;)

...good-lookin out, CT4. Didn't/don't have much interest in the awards show (UNTIL NOW) so I'd skipped the thread. But I'm p*ssed to the heights of piss-iss-itivity that I've apparently missed Nia as an actor on Third Watch all season. Is the season series at Blockbuster???

Didn't I hear about Judge Mathis's name up in some drama not too long ago, he was cheating on his wife and got caught up or something. I remember thinking, "Now he be up on that chair acting all high and mighty and he's doing the same thing?"

Maybe I'm wrong.

LOL @ the sweat stain. I think pretty much everything Monique wears is fugly.

I think Nicole Ari Parker is waaaaaaay overrated. People just like her because she's somewhat fair skinned with bright eyes. Have you really looked at her? Her face/head is kinda huge...I just don't think she's pretty. I saw her on 106 & Park near Valentine's Day, and even my friend's brother (who WAS absolutely in love with her) said "She's looking kinda alienish!"

I think the one who plays Bird is very pretty.

Ummm...I think that's about all of my 2 cents. :D

And did you know that Mo has a licensed church suit collection? I saw some of them at a store in the L.A. garment district. I've had a need to buy a lot of skirt suits lately, but her stuh is still too expensive for me.

Do they at least look decent? Are they worth the price on the tags?

They look decent. Now I would buy them when they fall below $100, but then again, I'm a very cheap individual.:p Got a necessary white suit there (not a Mo piece) for $49.99.

Yes, Tisha done put on a few pounds...and all the x-tra weight has gone to her face and makes her head look quite LARGE and CT4, I couldn't remember if we are in the time zone...I was going call you and shreek very loud that India Arie looked like a MONKEY.

Did ya'll see Gabrielle Union almost fall on her face? She pulled it off gracefully ..

And my last comment is Toni (from Girlfriends) looks so much different without her weave...I was shocked:eek: Whoever her stylist is for her natural hair needs to be fired because that short style was hitting on nothing....

Overall, I enjoyed the show.
