Alpha Chapters

Which GLOs still have active Alpha (first) chapters? Many Alphas seem to have closed.

DolphinChicaDDD 01-04-2004 12:17 AM

Our Alpha Chapter at Boston U is back and running. I know it closed for awhile, but I think that is because Boston got rid of all Greek Life in the late 70's-80s.
Can anyone confirm that, btw?

PhiPsiRuss 01-04-2004 12:44 AM

Phi Kappa Psi

Our first chapter, Pennsylvania Alpha, was founded at Jefferson College. It merged with Washington College, also in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Our two chapters merged, and it is known as Pennsylvania Alpha and considered our mother chapter.

SATX*APhi 01-04-2004 01:06 AM

Alpha Phi's Alpha chapter has been up and running since September 18, 1872. :)

DolphinChicaDDD,

Tri Delta's Alpha chapter turned in its charter in 1970. Apparently it wasn't demanded by the BU administration, though. According to the 1988 History of Tri Delta,

"In the latter part of the 1960s, the climate for fraternities at Boston deteriorated steadily. Declining numbers of rushees, apathy, and fewer members all contributed to the discouragement. In the fall of 1970, when Alpha Phi and Kappa Kappa Gamma closed their Boston chapters, Alpha Chapter, with only seven members returning to school, decided to ask the Executive Board to withdraw its charter too."

Alpha was reinstalled in 1984.

Tippiechick 01-04-2004 01:12 AM

This may be the case w/ DDD, but I do know for a fact that the new president installed at the time was systematically eliminating Greek life as part of his administration. (I know because he ws still the prez during my years there and I asked him personally. :) ) There's a whole mish-mash of reasons why, depending on who you ask. DDD must have been a bit more proactive than most if they withdrew on their own. If they hadn't, the administration would have eventually taken it from them. That's probably where the idea came from.

The Alpha Chapter at NYU was founded on March 17, 1917. It closed in the 1960s or 70s. It reopened in the 1980s.

sherbertlemons 01-04-2004 01:56 AM

Our Alpha Deuteron chapter at Monmouth University is alive and well, although it has closed during it's history. (Hence the deuteron.) I believe it was during the late 1800's when Monmouth eliminated Greek life.

GPhiLlama 01-04-2004 02:42 AM

Our Alpha chapter at Syracuse is still up and running!

KillarneyRose 01-04-2004 03:04 AM

Our Alpha Chapter has been continually active since its founding at Miami University of Ohio in 1902 :)

queequek 01-04-2004 04:05 AM

Most Alpha chapters are still running then ...

Glitter650 01-04-2004 04:14 AM

i don't think Hunter got rid of greek life, its just not crazily popular there. DPhiE only shut down there a couple of years ago. one of the locals on my campus is starting a chapter there and i think there may be a couple of multicultural/ethnic glo's.

As for AEPhi there is no more Alpha Chapter because Barnard got rid of greek life a couple of years after AEPhi was founded. And it won't ever return because Barnard women pledge sororities through Columbia chapters. :-(

Barnard College is part of Columbia University, and if AEPhi were to establish a chapter there, it could be known as the Alpha chapter.

The1calledTKE 01-04-2004 03:57 PM

TKE's Alpha is still up and running. :)

AXWhoah 01-04-2004 04:03 PM

Alpha Chi Omega's Alpha Chapter is at Depauw University in Greencastle, Indiana and is still up and running with around 130 women, maybe more.

tnxbutterfly 01-04-2004 04:05 PM

Our Gamma chapter is Columbia so I am guessing a Columbia Chapter would be Gamma. Yeah, Barnard is a part of Columbia but they keep a pretty distinct identity.

The_Nash 01-04-2004 04:38 PM

Our Alpha Chapter is active at Vincennes University

The identity between Barnard College and Columbia College has become increasingly blurred over time. Barnard does not issue diplomas, if you graduate from Barnard, you get Columbia University parchment.

As was stated in this thread, Columbia University NPC chapters have Barnard students as members, and I believe that some of these are more than 50% Barnard. When it comes to NPC chapters, there really is no practical distinction between Barnard and Columbia.

sairose 01-04-2004 04:54 PM

I thought there were more Alpha chapters closed. Hmmm. Although it's always good to hear how many are still going strong! :D

sarahgrace 01-04-2004 04:55 PM

Theta's Alpha chapter, founded at Indiana Asbury college in 1870 is still open, although the college is now called DePauw University! I believe it has been open continously, although I don't know this for a fact.

And, as sairose mentioned earlier, SAI's Alpha chapter is still running as well, and has been open since 1903.

It would be awesome to be a part of an Alpha chapter...to have that much history! My chapters are 41 (Theta) and 56 (SAI) years old.

Sarah

AlphaXi4983 01-05-2004 01:30 AM

alpha xi delta's alpha chapter closed a while ago. i believe lombard/knox college did away with all greek life at that time. if i'm wrong, please correct me. i really would like to see our alpha chapter restarted.... you lose so much history/tradition when your first chapter closes.

Sister Havana 01-05-2004 01:40 AM

Alpha Phi Omega's Alpha chapter at Lafayette College closed sometime in the mid-90s.

hannahgirl 01-05-2004 01:52 AM

DG's Alpha chapter was located at Mount Union College in Alliance, OH. It'd be nice to see it come back sometime in the near future.

Yes, indeed... Theta's Alpha chapter at DePauw has been open continuously since our founding Jan 27, 1870.

Theta smiles!

As sherbertlemons mentioned, Monmouth College in Monmouth Illinois banned secret organizations for a period of time, closing both the founding chapters of Kappa and Pi Phi. Today, both Kappa's Alpha Deuteron and Pi Beta Phi's Illinois Alpha chapter are alive and well! I believe there is a GCer from Illinois Alpha as well... I believe the chapters were recolonized sometime in the 20s or 30s... At least Pi Phi's was.. :)

smiley21 01-05-2004 09:46 AM

i am not a member but i know Alpha Chi Omega's alpha chapter is till open at DePauw:)

MysticCat 01-05-2004 10:28 AM

Our Alpha chapter is inactive. It originally closed in 1977. It was reactivated in 1991, but the chapter didn't stay active long. There may have been another attempt at reactivation since then, but I am not sure. Apparently, the school (New England Conservatory in Boston) is not as supportive as it once was. Once upon a time, there were quite a few GLOs there, including our Alpha chapter, SAI and Alpha Chi Omega.
