Piggyback Question RE: Ritual "Things"

Forgive me if I am wandering too closely into secret territory...

If there are certain "things" your members (or some of them) must wear during your Ritual (for example, robes or gowns or pink lycra catsuits :) ), where do they come from?

Can you buy them through your National? Do you have to make them? Are you allowed to take the pattern to an outside seamstress and have them made there?

We are given a pattern, but the items we wear have to be made by an initiated Delta Zeta since they're pretty distinctive.

On a kind-of-related note, what would you think about pledges paying a certain amount, as part of their initiation fees, to purchase their own personal robe, gown or catsuit? I really like that idea because it would cut down on the "uh oh, what can I wear" dilemma most sisters have run into.

Thanks for your input; and Happy New Year! :)

honeychile 01-01-2004 03:31 AM

We order ALL ritual paraphenalia (catsuits, etc) from our Executive Office. I think there was a time when we could use a pattern, but those days are gone.

I think it does look much nicer when everyone is in basically the same thing, and not just the same color. That bathrobe & sheet thing just turned my stomach!

Not so sure about having a new member pay for her own, as our catsuits are fairly expensive, and that would really run the Initiation fee sky-high. Each chapter is to have more than enough catsuits in stock at any given time.

(Do I really need to explain that I'm having fun with KR's catsuit idea, and that Alpha Delta Pi does NOT wear pink lycra catsuits during initiation, or are we a bit smarter than that?)

(If you must know, they're blue, not pink!)

sherbertlemons 01-01-2004 03:38 AM

I believe all blue owl costumes are ordered through the Fraternity.

However, we must purchase the tiaras ourselves. (Just joking. :) )

And don't forget about the blue and blue platforms, it would NOT be ritual without the blue and blue platform mary janes! ;)

Seriously, though, we have to order everything through our headquarters.

Really, they should kick you out for mentioning the blue platforms. :D It's a small leap to guess our super secret disco dancing ritual, complete with John Travolta blowup doll.

Ooops, did I just say too much?

Glitter650 01-01-2004 06:17 AM

You use a John blow up doll too ?? and I thought Phi Sig was "first NPC to use a hollywood star in our ritual " but we use grease John... not Saturday night fever john... Our cat suits don't have to be ordered through national.. but some other things... (the blow up doll... the CD of you're the one that I want ) do need to be ordered through our central office.. ;)

The Men's Perspective

We wear lime-green tuxedos, sunglasses, flip-flops, and huge afro wigs, as specified by our founders over 150 years ago.

Kevin 01-01-2004 11:16 AM

There's a guy in Rhode Island that makes our ritual equipment. He makes it for several organizations. When we chartered, I dealt with him directly to purchase our ritual stuff. He does great work by the way.

:D I don't know if we were first, but it's definitely SNF John, though, in a pinch, a Welcome Back Kotter John is permissable. Oh wait, I mean, umm. . . noooo, we definitely don't use a light-up dance floor for our super secret disco dancing ritual. ;)

carnation 01-01-2004 11:31 AM

Well, you guys all guessed that Pi Phi has a Native
American initiation because of our arrows, so I might as well say that we buy our Indian paraphernalia from a reservation out West.:D

texas*princess 01-01-2004 11:35 AM

lol carnation!!!

honeychile 01-01-2004 12:47 PM

Just out of curiosity, are any of y'all permitted to take pictures while you're wearing your catsuits, tiaras, etc? That's a big NO!! with us.

And the catsuits look so cute, too!! :(

We can't take pictures while wearing our pink tutus.

LAURA!!! I can't believe you told!! Gosh!!! Hehe, all of our stuff comes from EO...even the bronze garters (boy those are heavy!!).

KillarneyRose 01-01-2004 02:19 PM

Well, we aren't allowed to have pictures taken with our pink lycra catsuits on. And it's a real shame because we are very conscientious about our fat-circling and as a result everyone looks fabulous in them! :D

Oh, we were definitely the first. We've been using the John Travolta blowup dolls since we were founded, I beleive. (See, everyone else thinks their founders are amazing- ours were designing a ritual using blowup dolls of a man who wouldn't be born for another 80 years!)

FSUZeta 01-01-2004 02:47 PM

i am laughing so hard!

this thread is too funny....i am imagining russell in his get-up, the dg's in their pink tutus, the brite green catsuits of dz and those lovely blue on blue platforms of the kappas--but come on kappas, leave the tiaras to us ztas(the crown is one of our symbols)... we'll promise not to steal your platform idea!!

truthfully, our ritual equipment comes from our headquarters-each member is responsible for a white dress at the time of pledging/joining, and can be used throughout the collegiate and into the alumna world, providing that one is not sick of it by then!!
edit:oops!! excuse me!! brite pink catsuits of dz

edit 2: photos are not taken in the chapter room. robes for the officers, which are purchased from hq, are not worn outside the chapter room. however the turquiose and grey fuzzy slippers from hq ARE allowed outside the chapter room, as well as the wonder bras and the fish net stockings.

BUT, I didn't tell them about the blue feather boas, so HA!! ;) :D

GeekyPenguin 01-01-2004 03:08 PM

LMAO at this thread.

We order everything from our IHQ, but there was a time in a pinch where we realized we did not have a Gammie Bug outfit large enough to fit one of our alumnae initiates, so we made a Gammie Bug outfit for her out of some cardboard and paint we picked up at the local megastore. I don't think they would have minded.

Incidentally, there is an organization that sells a bunch of pink lycra catsuits and bronze anchors, etc, located just a few blocks from my apartment, and my sorority sister and I are DYING to break in and see everything because we're nosy. ;)

Vest, no cumberbund. Jacket has coat tails. We're very traditional, or we wouldn't wear lime-green.

You think bronze garters are heavy?! Try wearing golden haloes for 16 hours straight!!

I personally feel that this is the root of "Not tonight, sweetie, I have a headache!"

And texas*princess, don't breathe a word about the feathers!!!

i almost fell out of my chair laughing! i wonder if this is on ariesrising's site???

we don't wear catsuits. you would think we would since the lion is our mascot, but with our southern roots, we much prefer hoop skirts with lots of petticoats (think mary had a little lamb). we do have a pattern for those, but they are sure hard to sew! i think our staff and sheep must be ordered from hq, tho. it would be tough to find a pink sheep in the middle of winter!

ZTAngel 01-01-2004 05:56 PM

We have to purchase our goats from Nationals. They breed them especially for ZTAs.

tinydancer 01-01-2004 06:28 PM

Y'all crack me up!! I can't wait to see what get-up my lovely Griffindors wear (when the big day comes, that is!)

Glitter650 01-01-2004 07:22 PM

Well I wasn't going to say anything but since Phi Sig is all about the egyptian symbols we wear complete nemes head piece and our president wears the traditional pharoh beard for initiation... all of which are ordered through Central office... see there's this big part where we sort of re in act the whole cleopatra romance thing and that's where we bring in our JOhn blow up doll... DARN I"VE SAID TOO MUCH !!! I hope my sisters forgive me.... but I just love our ritual so much I want others to know how great it is

efcheerBB 01-01-2004 07:25 PM

This is a hilarious thread.

I didn't know anyone else wore catsuits for their rituals. But ours are Cafe Au Lait with Old Blue accents.

All of our founders must have been thinking along the same lines when they were coming up with our rituals ;)

DolphinChicaDDD 01-01-2004 07:40 PM

our catsuits can be from anywhere...but the dolphin and pansy costume has be bought from EO, along with all the water we have to truck in for posiden to make a special guest apperance.

and pictures are a BIG no no!! someone whipped out a camera to take a pictures of the newest memebers, and i thought the alumna advisor was going to have a heart attack...that and we had to kill a man who cracked the door open when we were setting up. poor katie...she no longer has a boyfriend...

damn it! know i've said too much!!! 20 lashes with a trident!!

Glitter,

We will forgive you as long as you don't mention the part of the ritual where we sing our special ritual hymn "Walk Like an Egyptian" ;)

We get most of our supplies from national headquarters. i was going to reorder some supplies when I was ritual chair but we just didn't have the money to buy the new updated dove costume. You should see the look on the new members faces when a giant dove throwing pearls and violets comes at them. and the bird call isn't that easy to master either!! The snakes on the other had are the responsibility of each chapter to get. Talk about difficult when you are in a small town with no pet stores. That's when new members come in handy, snake hunting is a great bonding activity! oops I think I have said too much.

well, since carnation has already ruined the whole Indian thing(good thing she kept secret the whole dancing around the fire with no clothes on)...i guess ill have to top all of ya'lls and say we have a seance and call forth from the dead the 12 founders of Pi Beta Phi.:p

Well, being a local and all, it's all up to us to get our ritual stuff. I'll tell you folks, it's really not that easy to find a 6 foot tall Morning Glory. What's even harder to find is the ritual dagger that we use in our ritualistic animal sacrifice of the lamb to take out the purple heart and feed it to our New Members. We basically do the same thing that the Sigma Kappa's do, and leave all of the ritual item-hunting to our New Members. Oh no! I've said too much! It's a good thing no other KLP's are on this board...

Our tomato red fishnet stockings and leather bustiers are ordered from national. I think that rather than each girl buying her own, there should be a small amount added to dues for the "bustier fund" so they can be passed down through the chapter and replaced when needed.

NO, NO, NO. One year the rush VP whipped out her camera DURING initiation and the chaplain ripped her a new one at the next meeting.

OMG! I can't stop laughing--our house mother used to always use the word "conscientious," and I can just imagine her saying, "Yes, my girls look so good because they are always so conscientious about their fat-circling!" Wa-ha-haaaa!

On a serious note...you mean any initiated DZ can make the, um, pink catsuits? I thought we had to order them or something.
