YOUR FONDEST EASTER MEMORIES....
This week is "Holy" Week for some, (if it's not for you, just simply IGNORE THIS POST... THANKS IN ADVANCE)...
ANYWAY, Sunday (next) is EASTER SUNDAY...as a child, what is your fondest memory(ies)? I remember visiting my maternal grandmother, going to her church having to say a "poem"... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif It seems like all the kids said the SAME THING...(all I remember was that it ended in something about HAPPY EASTER DAY! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif I remember AFTER church, riding with my grandmother, she had those marshmellow chicks (yuck)(she always gave those out to her Sunday school class)...it was so hot outside that they melted on the seat of the car, luckily not messing up my dress! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif I remember my grandmother's house with the lillies (red and white) in bloom and the azealas (sp)... oh, the GOOD FOOD, too! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif I remember eating the eggs we found during the hunt made me sick the next day! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif |
I can remember when I was about 7 or 8, My mom waited until the day before to get our Easter outfits. After a day of shopping she returned with a lovely white dress complete with ruffels and yellow sash. It was SO Pretty. I could not wait to put it on....On Easter morning I was so excited I got dressed about 2 hours before church, I just KNEW that there would be not one as cute as ME...My mom constantly told me to "sit down, so you won't get dirty.." I'm outside just a prancin' and twirlin' hoping that the other kids in the neighborhood would notice and admire my flawless..."Oscar Red Carper Worthy Dress" In the midst of my "grandious moment"...I FELL OFF THE PORCH!! My beautiful dress that I admired so much was full of DIRT, GRASS AND MUD..., gloves black, purse soiled. Oh how I cried. I was devistated as I had to wear an "old" dress to church as my sisters were in their "Easter Finest." Nonetheless we had a GREAT time at church and a fun Easter Egg hunt.
The moral to this story is..... SIT YOUR BUTT DOWN SOMEWHERE!!! (smile) I just had to share this one. |
Shalom Everybody~
Helping to prepare the Sedar Plate and making pretty pillows as "take-home" favors for our guest who shared the Passover meal with our family...and eating lots of Halva! Have a Blessed Resurrection Sunday Everybody! Shalom~ |
I remember for, like, 3 years in a row, I won the Easter Egg Hunt!! I got a stuffed bunny (or two) every year!
I remember dying eggs in our kitchen, the smell of vinegar mixed with the PAAS dye. I remember when I first learned to write on the eggs with white crayon before putting it in the dye. I thought I was an ARTIST, OK?! I made a personalized egg for everyone in the family. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I remember making Easter baskets. My least favorite thing: the chocolate bunnies that had the blue and yellow candy eyes... that mess was disturbing. I gave mine to my sister every year. I remember my mother and I having our first "disagreement" about what dress to buy for Easter. My mother wanted me in a little black and white suit. I wanted this BEAUTIFUL dress with sheer layers and flowers. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL. My mother said she wouldn't buy it. HA! My grandfather bought it for me!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif And lastly, though I really can't remember it, my fondest "memory" is that I was born on Easter Sunday (something I have in common with one of our Founders http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif). My birthday has not fallen on Easter since. This year it comes quite close, though, this Saturday, April 14th. Mark your calendars, LOL! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif |
This is not a childhod memory but it symbolizes why Easter is important to me.
I am Catholic and my mother was baptized in a Baptist church but she often attended my church and so she decided to join my church in 1998 on Holy Saturday/Easter Sunday morning, early the next year, they thought that she would be dead before Easter (she had cancer), turns out that, sick and all, she went to church on the anniversary of her membership into the church. This year, my fiance, who has never been baptized, will not only join my church but also join in the body of Christ, through baptizm, during the exact same mass that my mother became a member of the church. They loved each other very much (she has since died) and I am sure that she is pleased to see that he is making steps to make our family a unified body in Christ. God is good all the time! My fondest Easter Memories....ah, so many....in the days of my youth http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif
*Going shopping for an Easter Sunday dress, bonnet, and shoes *Preparing for the Easter Sunday Play that I always had a "part" *Practicing my "part" with my Dad *My mom pressing my hair *The compliments and kisses of the senior saints as my sister and I marched into the sanctuary with our cute and frilly Easter dresses *The Big Dinner at my grandmothers (yes, uh, complete with the mac and cheese, candied yams, ham, turkey, biscuits, sweet potato pie, collard greens, etc.) *Watching "Jesus of Nazareth" the week before Easter with my grandmother. *Playing in my Easter dress after church in my grandparents front yard. At which time, I'd have to change into my "play clothes". ------------------ I will bless the Lord at ALL times His praise shall continually be in my mouth. (Psalms 34:1, KJV) [This message has been edited by nikki25 (edited April 09, 2001).] |
my fondest Easter memories are of my mother dressing us -my younger brothers and me--up in codinating outfits. We would arise early to see what the Easter bunny left us.. then we headed to church--
We always had EASTER "speeches". Then we had the Easter egg hunt and enjoyed my grandmother's cooking. As we got older we started to attend "sunrise service" I hope to have the chance to pass these traditions on to my children ------------------ IVY in my HAND-- AKA in my HEART |
I remember most the easter that I was 7 years old. My mon had pressed my hair the night before and I had that one green sponge roller in the front to make some bangs. She dressed me first in this beaustiful pink dress with hand embroidered flowers on the front and a big, white ribbon around the waist (cant have an easter dress without that big white ribbon). Before she went in to get dressed she told me not to go outside with my brother and cousins (6 six boys). She didn't want me to sweat out my hair before church. Like a good little girl, as soon as I heard the shower going, I ran outside to play. The boys were out back playing tarzan at the edge of the creek. There was this big branch that hung down so that you could swing over to the other side of the creek. They had been swinging on it for a while and I wanted to have a turn. So I grabbed the branch ran back then ran forward and jumped, when halfway across the creek, the branch broke. Needless to say my hair was ruined and my pink dress had a new shade of brown. That was the worst easter whoopin of my life. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/redface.gif

Ooohh,
I gotta few I remember when my aunt took my sister, cousin and I to the white house for the annual Easter egg hunt. We waited in line for about three hours but it was worth it. It was crazy. kids everywhere, games wooden eggs etc. I still love going there. Maybe I'll take my nephew this year. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif A somewhat Easter related memory is when me and a friend found some candy in the basement of my house. We opened the pack and he took the purple one and I took a red one. His mouth started turning purple. Of course mine started turning red. Scared that we were going to die, we ran upstairs to our moms who went crazy. Turns out we ate Easter egg dye. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif My mom knew it was non-toxic but my aunt called the CDC anyway. It was quite an event. Even though we didn't get sick, we got that whoopin anyway. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif Moral: Don't eat candy from the ground! Everyone have a blessed and safe Easter. I'm so excited I'm going HOME!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif [This message has been edited by kitten03 (edited April 09, 2001).] |

I remember...
Dying Easter Eggs
Getting my hair pressed new Easter outfit Singing "Yes, Jesus Loves Me" every Easter EASTER DINNER And now this year's Easter will very memorable because I've fasted from meat for an entire month to gain strength and to develop a closer walk with Christ. This Sunday will be the end of the fast...;) |
*My mother would always make me the prettiest frilly ruffled dress, with a little bell attached to one of the ruffles. I felt like a princess!
*The press ~n~ curl. I remember it cost $5. * Dying eggs and then eating WAYYYY to many of them. *Wanting an Easter Basket with a good toy in it. *Church service, with the easter program afterwards (speeches and fashion show) and then the church easter egg hunt....later, attending the city sponsored an easter egg hunt as well. *The Food! |
I did not have a lot of Easter memories b/c I grew up in my parents' church, which was Church of Christ and they do not believe in Easter, so because of that I didn't get to wear a pretty Easter dress or recite a poem like all of my friends did. :( Now that I'm Baptist, I'm so excited of having my little boy wear a new suit on Easter and saying his one little line in the Easter program at church.
The few memories that I did have were of making Easter baskets from Clorox bleach bottles, making the bunny masks from paper plates, and going to Grandmama's house after church and eating a big dinner!! Happy Easter !! :D |
Ahh....Easter memories:
1. My new Easter outfit for church 2. The press n' curl (I'm starting to see a pattern up in here.:D ) 3. Easter dinner - can't wait for Sunday to get here 4. The Easter egg hunts 5. The Easter baskets 6. Being glad that I had a whole week of school off afterwards - yipee!!! This Easter Sunday (Resurrection Sunday as my pastor calls it), we are having Holy Communion. This Saturday the children have to make crosses for the senior members. The children also have to recite a bunch of poems after morning service. Afterwards, they will probably receive a bag full of goodies. I already bought my daughter's dress (she insisted on wearing light blue this year). Now I have to worry about her shoes and what to do with her hair (hint: it won't be a press n' curl :p ) |
The greatest memory I have about Easter is My Parrain (Godfather) helping me find the Golden egg and giving me the best Easter basket! :D I miss him so much.
|
I think some of you were in my house all these years!
Memories: * New Easter outfit, dress, slip, socks, frilly panties, hat...could not be worn again until Mothers Day, then my annual piano concert and then saved for any upcoming weddings that occured over the summer *Never finding the Haleluia Egg in the egg hunt (winner got an ice cream Lamb cake) *Seeing my entire family IN CHURCH (since I was the youngest I still had to go every week- they were older and now most of them only came on Easter and holidays) *always remembering my Easter recitation-however my beloved younger cousin (RIP) no matter how hard we rehearsed would get up on stage-say one line and then burst into tears..God I miss her! |
I have 2...
Like stardusttwin, I did the entire "I know my speech backwards and forward" thing and immediately forgot it once I got in front of all of those people looking at me   It paid off for me though, because I use that experience to open a class that I occasionally teach for adults on "Presentation Skills" My point is "If I can speak in front of people, so can you" 2nd memory is not really about Easter, but about Maundy Thursday, the date of the Last Supper. I grew up Episcopalian (sp?? Geesh, did I ever know how to spell that??) , and Maundy Thursday was a big deal. The Priest talked about what Christ was about to do in going to the cross, we had communion and went home. We also did the foot washing thing as well. Because of the solemn-ness (is that a word?) of the occassion we were supposed to leave in quiet reflection. For some reason I was in awe of the adults leaving the church with out the usually chit-chat. I don't remember a lot of what I learned in my early church years, but this service always had a big impact on me. My Baptist Church has been doing a Maundy Thursday service the last few years and I aways enjoy it. Only time we have real wine! :D |
Question: Do people still go all out with Easter suits/hats and such nowadays? I typically go to our Easter Sun/Sonrise service and it is "come as you are" . I haven't been to a "regular" Easter service in about 8 years
I used to love "Easter Monday" in junior high school 'cause a lot of folks wore their Easter clothes to school that day. We used to laugh at boys thinking they wuz sharp and stuff lookin' like ice cream sherbet! LOL |
My family is from the West Indies- they grew up dressing the boys in suits and the girls in crinolin layers and lace stockings in all that heat every Sunday not just Easter Sunday-they passed that on to me and I will pass that on to my children(one day). Its something about dressing up that puts church into a special place for me (now I'm not talking about showing off or dressing expensively - I had maybe 3 dresses that I rotated w/my Sunday only ruffled panties, patent leather shoes and matching purse).
When I was younger everyone came to church dressed-these days this come as you are I personally can't get with. Its one thing to wear jeans and sneakers if thats all you have-but these middle class children at my church can and should have one pair of dress slacks/shirt or a nice skirt and blouse. Especially when wearing $75 nikes that they will outgrow in a few months. I have less tolerance for so called grown folks who do this too-no need to wear the same jean skirt you wear when hangin with your girls to church but carrying a $300 LV bag. I stopped going to my old church when the acolytes were on the altar wearing sneakers, chewing gum and passing notes-that NEVER would have happened back in my day. These kids make me feel old when I have to say that! Phew, sorry...didn't mean to digress so much  ! |

One of my favorite things about Easter is how excited my mom gets, even though she tries to hide it, about the Easter egg hunt she gets to plan and making Easter baskets. More recently, its become a tradition for ALL of the children in my super-extended family to come over to our house on Sunday afternoon, so my cousins and I always run out of dyed eggs and we end up just hiding naked hard boiled eggs and the little plastic eggs all around the yard. But we turn it into a plus because we let the kids decorate them themselves with markers and crayons and paint on the dye, and we put candy inside the plastic ones and we plant a few with a dollar or two inside. My mom is so organized that it always goes off well-- we never end up with eggs left in crazy places, because she counts them all and makes a little map... she's so anal that it's adorable.
She also gets excited about Easter baskets-- every year she says she's not making anymore, and every year she goes out the night before to Wal-Mart and makes one anyway for my three cousins and me. We each get a personalized basket with age-appropriate gifts and candies, and she remembers which candy each of us likes (I got the "grown and sexy" basket last year- with makeup and godiva chocolates!!) And we take pictures with our baskets in our new clothes like it's a mini-Christmas and she packs the baskets away till the next year. It's not so much the things we get or even the fact that we get anything at all, but that she's so thoughful about it. I think she's just trying to rack up cool points in time for mother's day! ;) |
I also used to get excited because my grandmother had a hard and fast undershirt rule-- once it got chilly in the fall for the first time and I had to wear an undershirt, I had to KEEP wearing undershirts every day, no matter how hot it got later. And we live in South Carolina, where it truly hits 80 degress at Christmastime. The rule was that I couldn't stop wearing my undershirt until Easter, no matter how hot it got before then. It's usually hotter than life by the middle of April, so Easter was the first day that I could put on shorts without tights underneath and not wear my undershirt! I'd wake up Monday morning SOOOO happy!

I have a few...
1. Having to say "Easter Pieces" for our Sunday School Easter program. They always used to give me the longest ones! Man...just once I wanted to act like I couldn't memorize anything! LOL 2. Getting a pretty dress and white patent leather shoes every year! 3. Getting to wear my hair pressed and curled! lol But my most fond memory actually came when I was an adult. One of my best friends from childhood (whom I could never get to come to church with me!) gave his life to the Lord, and he was baptized on Easter Sunday. We both cried like a baby. Ever since that day, I stopped calling it Easter Sunday and started calling the day Ressurection Sunday. |
