Meeting People at the Grocery Store!!

Oh wow, I never thought it was possible, but I seriously met the coolest guy at the freakin' grocery store earlier tonight! Has this ever happened to anyone you know? I never thought it was real!

I just moved back to Orlando, in a new apartment complex, and there's a new fancy Publix across the street. For those of you not near Florida, Publix is the best grocery store, decent prices, doesn't smell (i.e., that stench in Winn-Dixie's in bad areas of town), and the newer ones are great - the regular grocery stuff, plus lots of neat gourmet stuff, decent sushi (!), good wine selection, etc.

So anyway...I wanted to bake what I call the "World's Most Fabulous Cookies" (peanut-butter-chocolate-chip-fluffy-melt-in-your-mouth-damn-fine cookies) and I realized I was out of the main ingredients (the PB and choc chips!), so I headed to Publix.

I'm walking through the aisles, and WOW! there is this tall/dark/handsome guy with the most beautiful eyes I've ever seen. I was feeling a little feisty (and wearing my favorite jeans, thank you God for the long legs!) so I smiled at him and sort of "made eyes" at him (Ladies, you know what I'm talking about). We kept crossing paths, and I knew he was checking me out. I tried to dawdle a little, but I finished finding what I needed way before he did, so I went to check out. He was in the line next to me but behind 2 slow people. So I just went to my car and drove across the street home. (In case people think I'm lazy for driving across the street, the street is a 4 lane divided highway and I'm in the very back of a huge apt. complex - not walkable with groceries!)

I have a very distinctive car and my apt is the only residential area across the street. The guy followed me over there and as I was taking out my groceries he drove up. He was so cute, apologizing for following me, "I swear I'm not a stalker - don't run!"

I wasn't going to let him into my apartment (I'm crazy enough to pick up a guy in a grocery store, but not THAT crazy!), so we sat on the steps of my apt bldg and talked for awhile. He went to UF too and now works in town. We were just laughing at ourselves so much - Who the heck picks up people in the grocery store? Isn't that some kind of urban legend? It never happens in real life, right? We exchanged phone numbers. :)

So yay! That was my little adventure for the day. Even if it never leads anywhere, I'll at least know it's POSSIBLE. :D

I met a guy at Publix yesterday too! Except I'm not single.

So, I'm on my cell phone with my friend and he walks by me. I look at him and I whisper into the phone, "Oh my God, the hottest guy just walked by me."

I'm in the Seafood department and he's at the deli. They're in close proximity. I see him out of the corner of my eye looking over at me. I brush it off. I was definitely not looking cute. I had on a Juicy baby tee, jeans, make up that hadn't been touched up since I left for work at 7:30am, and my hair thrown up in a bun.

I walking through the store and every time I would see him down one of the aisles, we would look at each and I'd would just melt. SO HOT! He had light brown/dark blonde hair and bright blue eyes. He was muscular. He was about 5'10 which is a little short for me. :( (like cashmoney, I have height requirements)

I go to check out and there's a whole bunch of lanes open but he chooses mine. I'm all nervous. Man I'm a dork! I bought an 18-pack of Miller Light for the New Years party my friend is throwing. I load it up onto the conveyor belt and that's what he says to me in the most amazing accent, "You like American beer?" I laughed a little and said, "I like it because it's cheap." He started commenting about how the groceries stores in the US are "different". I asked where he was from and he told me Italy. AHHHHHH!!!!! A hot, foreign guy with a cute accent! As all my girls know, it doesn't get any better than that. Especially Italian guys as they're infamous for being...um...great in bedroom exercises. So, he's going on and on about how the groceries stores in Italy are open-air markets and how the food is fresh. I'm pretending to be all enthralled in what he was saying but I was actually just staring at his beautiful face and hot body. He told me that he was here in Orlando studying at UCF for a semester. Then he asked, "Can I take you out sometime?" I had to let him know I had a boyfriend. Stuff like this NEVER happened when I was single. I must really love my boyfriend to turn down a guy who was that gorgeous!

Those are the coolest grocery store stories I have ever heard! It's so weird that both of you live in Florida and met guys at the same store. Or shall I say same name of grocery store. Anyway, good luck to you G8Ralphaxi. Hopefully this will be the start of a wonderful New Year for you! :)

Thats so cute.. I hope things work out for you. :D :D

I ran into my current guy at a sporting goods store at home (he works at a bar at school) before we actually started hanging out..

Yay! Publix rules!!!! :D

I called my best friend when I got home - a "you will not BELIEVE what I just did!!!" phone call - and we both thought that should be the next Publix ad. They've done so many with the happy family stuff; they should target young single people.

This is the ad we made up: cute guy, cute girl catch each other's eyes in store, spend time ducking around store aisles to check each other out, little sheepish smiles back and forth, finally guy introduces self. Cut to Publix logo, and the words "Publix, it must be love." Great Valentine's ad.

My talents are SO wasted in law...sigh.

Okay, how come I can't pick up hot boys in Publix? So not fair. Maybe I should start grocery shopping every day. :D

I actually have quite the track record at Universal.

It was the Publix on Alafaya and Colonial. I always see hot guys there. You should go to that one! ;)

The one on McCulloch has too many freshman.

sherbertlemons 12-31-2003 04:05 PM

Therein lies my big mistake. The one on McCulloch is the one I usually go to. I will be switching grocery stores in the new semester. :D

Munchkin03 12-31-2003 04:26 PM

They just started building Publixes (sp?) all over my town. Woo-hoo! Now I'll have eye candy while I'm at home in Florida. :)

HotDamnImAPhiMu 01-04-2004 12:00 PM

The guy I'm seeing now I met at work (I'm a waitress.) Usually I don't follow up on guys who try to pick me up at work, but one of my girlfriends, who's the bartender, *gave him my number.* Probably because I wasn't being very subtle in the back "is he still HERE? He's SO HOT. Isn't he HOT?!" and apparently neither was he.

He was kind of an asshole last night though. He and his buddy were drinking, and I went to pick him up after work @ his place (his car's in the shop) and he was both difficult to deal with and accusatory ("How come you always take his side on things?", etc.) Plus he fell off the front stoop and threw me into the iron railing. Oops.

He's apologetic this morning but still.

Maybe I'm being too quick to cut him loose -- the last boy was *awful* like that, and I didn't cut HIM loose soon enough. Once bitten twice shy?

I just got back to the states and had to go to publix for food. I was wearing these new diamond studs I got for xmas. This chick came in who was about 5'10 or 5'11 with light blonde hair, blue/green eyes and was wearing a skirt with a shirt that looked like it came from express. I thought she was really hot, she looked like she had C boobs. I was walking down an ailse and she came down the same one. As she got closer to me she slowed down her walk and looked over at me.....I looked the other way and acted like i wasnt paying attention to her. I dipped out in a different direction trying to dodge her ass but then somehow we ended up together at the wine and cheese. I was looking for a Merlot to have with dinner tonight and so was she. She looked over at me and smiled, I smiled and gave her my "whats up" look. Thats when she said she was looking for a wine for dinner and didnt know much about the Reds. I filled her in and then dipped out in the opposite direction. I went to the seafood place and was waiting for the guy to help me. All of a sudden I noticed all the employees looking in my direction, I turned around and she was there right beside me. She smiled again and told me I looked like phucking Justin Timberlake. I told her its the earrings and she started laughing. I looked around and all the men were checking her out, even the guys who were with their wives. So I order my scallops from the meat man and while he was getting it she told me that she loves scallops. She asked me if I knew a good way to cook them ( I know how to make them in 6 different dishes ). I told her maybe and if I saw her in publix next sunday around the same time I might tell her if she's lucky. She started laughing and said "Maybe, if you're lucky". After that I grabbed my scallops and walked off like a bad a$$. The employees had that on "Damn, that b!tch is a pimp" look on their faces. It was so tight.

Publix is where it's at, yeah!

an update...

talked to my Publix Boy yesterday. He was out of town (he's a skydiving instructor and professional photographer/videographer for the skydiving co. ) and just called to chat while he was in between jumps. Turns out one of my friends knows him - he used to work with her ex boyfriend. She told me he used to be quite the partier but seemed like a fun, nice guy so I teased him a little about that.

We ended up talking for over 1/2 hour - about the most random, random stuff. Stuff to do in Gainesville (remembrances of when Market Street's Thursdays were still cool), people we knew, families, etc. He agrees with me that it is heresy to buy a powerful sports car (i.e., Corvette) and not get stick shift. :D

He sounds like a keeper.

I agree. Kind of scary. The grocery stores in my area, it's hit or miss. You know, everyone has to go to the grocery store. You'll never know what you're going to get. I prefer to search for guys in more specific "habitats".

cashmoney 01-05-2004 12:02 PM

Dionysus, its not that people go grocery shopping to look for people...theres just something about that place where people like to flirt. 90% of the time its nothing but a " Yea, I think you're hot but thats as far as it goes" type of thing. I remember the day I realized how much a$$ really floats around in there, its amazing. I think its part of the reason why I like going grocery shopping all the time, even with my GF.

sororitygirl2 01-10-2004 02:45 PM

So, a guy at the grocery store this week let me go in front of him in line, and then I got home and saw that he lives in my building! Kind of weird! It makes me wonder if he knew who I was and was flirting or if he's just a nice guy... Maybe he is stalking me! J/K :)

absolutuscchick 01-10-2004 02:50 PM

See when I go to the grocery store, more often then not, I'm in workout clothes or I've just woken up.....so I'm definitely not feeling flirty.....but when I look cute, I love to flirt with the hot guys I see :) :)

G8Ralphaxi 02-14-2004 02:39 AM

OK! An update for the Publix Guy story...

So, we've been talking on the phone for the last couple weeks. But we've both been so insanely busy. He's had work stuff during the week and weekends (the skydiving business) and then took a trip to California. I've had this crazy bar exam stuff - classes for 4 hours a day for the last 2 months, study study study. Almost done with all that, thank goodness.

Anyway, we've been talking a lot but haven't actually had time to get together. There was one weekend where I went to Gainesville, but I was so busy with other stuff (brother's birthday, 2 other friend's birthdays, etc.) that it didn't work either.

So I got an invitation to my friend's wedding, and it's in Gainesville in a couple weeks. It's going to be a small wedding. As far as I know, here is the total list of people I will know at this wedding:

The bride (we were really really close in law school but haven't seen each other much at all since she graduated a year before me)
Her fiancee (I've met him twice. He doesn't talk much)
A guy friend of the bride (met him once. married. also doesn't talk much)
Plus, one more person, we'll just call her Queen Bitch. (she is very pretentious and NOT NICE) Long soap opera story but she was unspeakably rude to me that I really should have risked the lawsuit and slapped her.

The point is, no way in hell am I going to this wedding by myself. It's not that I need to walk in with a date, but I just don't want sit there and not know anyone except the bride (who is a total sweetheart, but geez, I can't expect her to hang out with me all night! it's her party!) and Queen Bitch. Wouldn't be surprised if QB decided to be all fake and act nice to me, then spit out one of her special little remarks. I can't ruin the wedding by punching one of the other guests, that's just not ladylike.

The wedding is in Gainesville, where Publix Guy goes most weekends for the skydiving business. So I called him up and left a message for him "Hey, it's G8Ralphaxi, what's up? Anyway, I have an idea that should be entertaining. Worse case scenario, you'll get free dinner out of it. Call me and let me know what you're doing on [date of wedding]."

After a little bit of phone tag and text messaging back and forth I talked to him tonight, filled him in on the whole soap opera Queen Bitch story and invited him to the wedding. He said yes! :D He thought the whole story was pretty funny and he can't wait to meet QB. He also said that we would definitely have to get together before the wedding, because a wedding as a first date? That's just weird! ;)

So YAY! I have a date to a wedding!!! (The last two weddings I attended, I ended up breaking up with my boyfriend right before) And he's brilliant and hot as hell - Latino neuroscience major, I'm not kidding! Life is beautiful...
