Raccoon Murder Lands Frat Brothers In Hot Water

Raccoon Murder Lands Frat Brothers In Hot Water

Dec 25, 2003 2:40 pm US/Central
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) A fraternity member was treated for possible exposure to rabies, and he and two others could be expelled for beating, skinning and then eating a raccoon that might have had the disease, the fraternity's president said.

The men had spotted the raccoon behaving erratically outside the Phi Kappa Psi house at the University of Georgia on Dec. 12. One hit it with construction pylon and shot it with a pellet gun in the fraternity's parking lot, Athens-Clarke County Animal Control officials said. Another skinned the raccoon, and a third cooked and ate some of its meat.

Erratic behavior can be a symptom of rabies in an animal, but the raccoon could not be tested because its carcass was burned. At least one fraternity member was treated for possible exposure to rabies, which can be fatal if left untreated.

The three members involved will go before the fraternity's grievance committee and face possible sanctions from reprimands to expulsion, said Larry Bales, fraternity president.

"It was a ridiculous situation -- an isolated incident," Bales said. "It was not a fraternity-sanctioned event."

Idiots. What would possess someone to do that? I'm not even talking from the "cruelty" angle. More from the "dumb" angle.

Adelphean 12-26-2003 02:28 AM

Stupid, I'll agree.
However, it does sound like a typical stereotype of something any person from a southern state would do. Too bad they're in GA. Here in TN it's perfectly legal to pick up roadkill for the purpose of eating it.
And no I'm NOT kidding!

Racoon Murder?????
Since when can one "murder" a racoon? One can murder a human being but one cannot murder anything else. I'm not sure what kind of idiot would kill and eat a racoon displaying eratic behavior, which ought to send all sorts of warning signals. For that matter I'm not sure why anyone would want to kill one anyway, but, you cannot MURDER an animal. That word has precise legal meanings and only applies to humans.

It's just one more example of people attributing stupid behavior to that of belonging to a greek org. Nobody would have said crap if they'd been three regular people...

That was in the Cincinnati paper this morning and my Grandma called me to ask if my sorority does stuff like that.

I just wish it had been GDIs that had been caught and not members of a GLO!

Rudey 12-26-2003 06:34 PM

We're lucky it happened in the South. I don't care if it offends Southerners but the country has just come to expect these types of things from them. Now if it happened in NYC, shiznit would hit the fan.

It wasn't just a GLO, it was my fraternity! Phi Psi did not expand in the South for over 8 decades, except for Vanderbilt, Duke and dormant chapters lost to the Civil War, until my chapter originally chartered at FSU in 1962. We've had a tough time penetrating the South, but we have made slow and continual progress. Some of our once struggling and new chapters at large southern state universities, like FSU and LSU, are not so new and doing quite well now. Then this happens. 3 Phi Psis eat a rabid racoon at the University of Georgia. YEE HAW!!! The South shall rise again, and all that BS.

ThetaPrincess24 12-26-2003 07:51 PM

I know i shouldnt........I really shouldnt..........but when i read this initially I couldnt help but to laugh at fellow southerners.......I'm sorry the racoon died, but animal control wouldve killed it anyway and after testing to be positive it had rabies, they'd have burned it too. Now I do wonder about the mental state of the guys who thought it would be okay to eat a rabies infested racoon.......

I wont mention the name, but there is one fraternity at UK that is known for shooting possums (rabid or not) when they come around their fraternity house (it's off campus enough not to draw too much attention). I dont know what they do with the possums afterwards, but I know they are not skinned or eaten, my guess is thrown in the dumpster.

Are you kidding me? First of all, I was born in Chicago, where people hunt rats in the streets with a .22 for fun. I have now lived in the south for the past 20 years and can tell you this is not a normal situation. My fraternity house is actually across the street from the Phi Psi house and is comprised of really good men. Three of them are obviously not too bright, but everyone cannot be a rocket scientist. As for your comment that the country comes to expect this from the South is just plain ignorant. That is like saying Southerners expect all Northerners to be Rude, mannerless, belong to a gang, and shoot dice in an alleyway every Friday night. Absolute nonsense.

While I have noted that you do not much care WHO you offend as long as you get to put your .02 cents in about pretty much everything, whether or not you know what you are talking about, this Southerner IS offended. Your post shows your incredible ignorance and bad manners - once again.

Good manners involves you telling people they don't know what they're talking about and that they're ignorant?

Um......what?? I'm not even going to attempt to argue with that except to say that it's totally false. You're not the only person around here from Chicago.

You say Rudey's post was ignorant/prejudicial, but I guess I don't see the difference between that and making such a sweeping generalization.

I didn't see your post. Regardless I'm not from the projects of South Chicago where you "shoot rats for fun". Generally a lot of those people were raised by Southern families who moves up there.

No one moves from the South to the North.

I was proving my point that, obviously, not all people from Chicago hunt rats, just as not all Southerners, kill rabid racoons and eat them out of the back of a pick up truck. I was using this "sweeping generalization" to show how ignorant "sweeping generalizations" are.

I know plenty of Southerners who have moved from the South to Manhattan, and of the few that have returned home, they miss the city every single day.

I also lived in the South for 8 years, and compared to Manhattan, it is a living death.

Cluey 01-03-2004 10:46 AM

Can we manage not to make this into another North vs. South debate? People make poor decisions everywhere, even up north I am sure. No section of the nation has the market on stupidity. I am reminded almost daily that stupid people are everywhere. ;)

The difference is that your experience with rats is something never associated with the North. Never in a movie do they talk about hunting rats. Just say "Hey, Rudey, I was retarded and made a mistake" and that's that.

That's funny, because I lived in Manhattan for 2 years. I've also lived in Chicago, and in northern California. I was never so happy as I was the day I moved back down South. It's all a matter of personal preference.

I think it's silly to debate about what region of the country you live in. If you're happy where you are, then be happy. If you're not happy there, then move. I have learned that there are nice people everywhere. There are also mean people, rude people, ugly people and rednecks everywhere you go.

I grew up in the South, I went to RI for college, and I live in Manhattan now. Each place has its advantages, each has its disadvantages.

Also, have you ever heard of the Great Migration?

Update from KHOU.com

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- A judge issued an arrest warrant Thursday for a University of Georgia student accused of killing a raccoon that was then skinned, burned and eaten by members of his fraternity.

Judge Patricia Barron said she was disturbed by the allegations and ordered Erik Robert Zimmerman's arrest on charges of animal cruelty.

Zimmerman told police he saw the raccoon near a trash container the night of Dec. 12 and hit it with a traffic cone to scare it away. When it did not run off, Zimmerman shot the animal with a pellet gun. A fraternity brother skinned it, and another ate some of it after the meat was burned.

Animal control officer Kim Winter said Zimmerman should have contacted authorities when he saw the raccoon.

Yeah I always try to kill things when they don't scare away. Then I always like to eat after I kill.

poor raccoon, I am with the animal rights agency and I dont condone THIS at all.......this makes me want to throw up......it is animal cruelty..........I hope they lock them in jail for animal cruelity... we are trying to get stricter laws, we in CALI are very anti-animal abuse/animal testing, etc........... animals should be loved and treated with kindness.......as I am reading this, my cat is on my lap purring. I should tell you the story.....I took my cat Mishee to the vet for checkup and there was this friendly yellow cat just purring. My mom was talking to the owner, she told my mom he is there for a check up for a cat bite on the ear and that she loves this vet cuz they were the same one who operated on him when he was shot near a high school. The neighbor found him and took him to a vet and told them when they came home and they paid one grand for the sugery. she was worried he will not be safe there and she saw how I was interacting with him and she invited us over to her house and observed me. She told me it was okay for me to take him home with me. My cat Mishee didnt like it at first but once she realize she can boss him around the next day, she was fine with him :) I love them both to the death and that is why I am so pro-animals. Sorry to be off topic.
