Dogs versus Cats

Which do you prefer and why?

I love dogs. They're your buddies, your friends. They are pack animals, and they are joining your pack. Dogs are team players. I especially adore Cairn and West Highland Terriers, herding dogs, and retrievers.

ETA I find cats selfish and annoying.

Kevin 12-22-2003 11:08 AM

I prefer cats. Much more independant animals, require far less care.

I prefer animals with minds of their own.

I still like dogs though.

aephi alum 12-22-2003 11:21 AM

Cats rule and dogs drool! :D

I'm definitely a cat person. Cats are beautiful, intelligent, independent creatures. I have nothing against dogs, especially terriers, but if I could have a pet it would be a cat, no question.

bethany1982 12-22-2003 11:26 AM

I like dogs better than cats, but with my current lifestyle, the independence of a cat makes it much better fit.

FeeFee 12-22-2003 11:31 AM

While I find some dogs absolutely adorable, I will take a cat anytime over a dog. As previously posted, they are independent and don't require as much work.

My daughter, on the other hand, is a dog lover. I doubt however, if we will ever have a pooch as a house resident.

Lady Pi Phi 12-22-2003 12:56 PM

I'm a dog person by heart. But I have a cat. I love animals and my parents wouldn't let me have a dog in the city, so I got a cat instead. I love my cat, but I would get a dog in a heart beat. They're a lot more friendly and loyal and lovable.

SmartBlondeGPhB 12-22-2003 01:03 PM

Cats, for all the reasons already listed.

Mine are independant and as long as I leave enough food, they usually don't even notice I'm gone. They can take care of themselves.

Yes, one is a PITA but that's part of his personality..........:D

Jill1228 12-22-2003 02:01 PM

I love both but right now I have 2 cats. Cats are more independent. When we buy a house, I also want to get a dog

midwesterngirl 12-22-2003 02:18 PM

Dogs are better for me.I find most cats to be very impersonal.I like a friendly goofy dog.I almost find the "cat" smell intolerable.Meaning a cat must be impeccably groomed for me to be around it.I know that dogs also can and do smell but even the smallest smell of cat is too much for me.

TheEpitome1920 12-22-2003 02:30 PM

I'm torn between both. I had a dog (died in March) and have 2 cats. They are very friendly and love to be held.

Cluey 12-22-2003 02:55 PM

I'm a sucker for all animals.

I always grew up with dogs, but we "adopted" a pregnant street cat during my senior year in high school. I had never had a cat before then, but I love my two kitties now. It may help that the boy cat thinks he's a dog and plays fetch... ;)

ZTAngel 12-22-2003 03:45 PM

I am a dog lover. I love going to my boyfriend's apartment and walking in and his dog jumping on me and licking me because he's so happy to see me. I like that dogs can tell what mood you're in; if I'm upset, his dog will come over and cuddle up to me to cheer me up. They just have so much more personality than cats.

Rio_Kohitsuji 12-22-2003 04:07 PM

I'm torn in between....some dogs I like...some I hate..ditto w/cats.

With dogs I prefer lab's, they are just so cute and loving!

My cat is very dog-like, she comes to you when you call her and she'll go utside with you and walk, she's a Catdog really :p

Munchkin03 12-22-2003 04:14 PM

When I have a house with a big yard, I will have a dog. But, I think it's inhumane to own a LARGE dog in a NYC apartment. So, I think we're getting a cat for our place next year. :)

krazy 12-22-2003 04:49 PM

Cats crap in a box, step in it, and then walk all over everything. Cats smell like ass. If you have a cat, everyone who steps into your house knows it, and sure as hell smells it. Dogs are awesome, and they would kill cats if we let them. Cats are bunk.

xok85xo 12-22-2003 05:37 PM

definately dogs. cats are evil.

I've had people who visit my house not even know that I have pets, let alone cats.

I have to say, I think it's kind of gross that you can't wash cats with good old soap and water. I'm not convinced that their licking themselves with their own saliva really gets them clean.

I agree with most of what Munchkin03 wrote, with the exception if its a small dog and that they are taken care of properly every single day. My mom has a Cairn Terrier and my sister has 2 miniature Dachshunds. These dogs have plenty of space. Then there is women in my building who has a Great Dane, who is one of the sweetest dogs I've ever known, but I think that she is insane. You can just tell by the way that this well mannered dog walks, that he needs to be able to occasionally run, and do so in a large field.

I would own a dog, except that I can't take care of one on a daily basis because I live alone.

Cluey 12-22-2003 06:08 PM

We wash our cats in our utility sink with shampoo about once every other month to get rid of their dander and make sure they smell good. Maybe we're just weird, though :)

You can wash a cat... but the cat is not likely to be too happy with you about it!

It's recommended that you bathe your cat if the cat can't produce enough saliva (possibly due to illness) or if someone in your household is allergic to cats (to keep the dander down).

After petsitting for my summer roommates' dogs for just 1 week, I am DEFINITELY a confirmed cat person. The roommate's dogs were just too darn high maintenance. I work all day long and they couldn't handle being alone. Even though they have a dog door and the weather was nice, they would still sh** all over the floor. Plus, they tore up the couch little by little. By the end of the week, there was barely any stuffing on one side of it.

For everyone who says "cats are too snotty and independent" - that depends on the cat. Just like some dogs are mean and aggressive, some cats are standoffish too. My cat George is super-friendly. He's a big cuddly tomcat and greets me at the door when I come home. He sleeps next to me. He sits on my lap when I watch TV. He follows me around my apt. I've had him since he was a kitten and have always given him a lot of attention. Pets are like children - they act how you raise them.

RE: litter box - it smells only if you are lazy. I buy the expensive litter and throw away the clumps every day. Now they make flushable litter so you can get rid of it instantly. Also, if you clean it every day, then they're not walking around in dirty litter. I also have an old rug by the box so any loose litter gets knocked off his feet.

George keeps himself very clean and he does not smell! Many breeds of dogs smell, even when they are "clean." George also is an inside cat so he doesn't get outside to get dirty.

I don't mean to come across as a dog hater. I like most dogs, and just love some of the ones my friends have. I actually wouldn't mind having a little chinese pug (they are so cute - my friend has two and they are the nicest little dogs) But since I live in an apt and will be working full time, it is completely unfair to have a dog.

absolutuscchick 12-23-2003 12:56 AM

I'm not really an animal person....

But I do like cats better than dogs. But I can't stand cat hair. It grosses me out!!!

Intense1920 12-23-2003 01:19 AM

I like both but right now with my living situation a cat was a better fit. Whenever, I get a house then I will get a dog as well.

PrincessPhiSig 12-23-2003 01:19 AM

I will always be a dog person. I had a big dog (chow/shepherd mix) as a child that was my protector. He would have ripped apart someone if they would have tried to hurt me. :) I have a soft spot in my heart for big dogs. My parents will soon be getting a pug, so a small dog will be quite a change of pace!

I'm not too fond of cats. They are nice and all sometimes but dogs are so much more sociable and always brighten up my day. Speaking of which, that series Cell Dogs on Animal Planet is really neat!

:)

GeekyPenguin 12-23-2003 02:02 AM

Seeing as how I am allergic to most cats, dogs all the way! I have the cutest doggie ever.

aggieAXO 12-23-2003 03:52 AM

I am currently listening to a dog bark it's head off wishing I worked in a cat only practice.

I definitely prefer cats-they are much quieter and are not likely to kill you

phisigduchesscv 12-23-2003 04:05 AM

Cats are my favorite although I do like dogs. As someone else pointed out Cats were worshipped in Ancient Egypt as gods, I've never heard of dogs being worshipped as gods.

My cats play fetch with me, they greet me at the door (my parents know when I get home because the cats go to the door and wait for me), they cuddle up when I'm down but if I don't want to be bothered they are independent from me, cats are just the best.

I do like dogs though. My preference is for big dogs. I grew up with a German Shepherd and a couple years ago we rescued a dalmatian. I just can't stand the little yip-yip dogs - they drive me nuts. My neighbors across the street have pomeranians - it is funny to see them barking. They run up to someone and start to bark but with every bark they jump back a little almost like their bark is pushing them backwards. When they get to far away they run up again and start the process over.

Thrillhouse 12-23-2003 08:52 AM

I used to say cats but thats until we got a dog.

SATX*APhi 12-23-2003 05:57 PM

I don't do cats. My sister's roommate has THREE CATS at their place and I can't stand going over because of them. I obviously prefer dogs and love my puppy. :)

cntryZTA5 12-23-2003 11:18 PM

I love both my dogs and cat....but the dogs a little bit more. Dogs always seem happy to see you. My cat acts like I am "allowed" to live in her house :).

In fact, I am sitting next to the puppy I just adopted from the humane society today!

What type of puppy? How old? What does he or she look like? Pictures?

AOPIHottie 12-23-2003 11:35 PM

I love both, but mostly cats. In fact I live with 3-mine and each roommate has one. And they love to fight with each other-especially an hour before I have to get up, in the middle of MY bed. Why mine and not the other roommates, I have NO idea.

AlphaXiGirl31 12-24-2003 12:21 AM

Cats!! They keep things interesting. I wouldn't be opposed to having a dog AND a cat at some point in the future... My boyfriend (who is a confirmed dog lover and pretty much avoids my cat) swears that this is possible.

My cats love to do that, too! I love having my own personal WWIII in the middle of my bed 15 minutes before my alarm was supposed to go off, really I do :)

She's a shep mix, about 2 months old. I took pics with my camara but am having a hard time getting them to download onto my computer!

Yeah, and its ONLY in my room......not Girl Roomie or Boy Roomie, but MINE. And of course I can't go back to sleep after they are yelling and there is fur flying everywhere.

valkyrie 12-24-2003 11:03 PM

I absolutely love ALL animals, but right now I have a preference for cats. That's good, I suppose, because I have six of them. ;)

CatStarESP4 12-25-2003 03:03 PM

Cat Person here! These wonderful creatures were worshipped by the Ancient Egyptians. Almost everything about them fascinates me. They are very independent and expressive. These creatures are indeed poetry in motion.

I also like dogs, but I love cats!
