It would appear that 11 "idols" will be facing off, from such countries as:
Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, The Netherlands, Norway, Pan-Arabia, Poland, South Africa, United Kingdom and United States

justamom 12-22-2003 08:22 AM

If I have any time, I'd sure like to see it.

mu_agd 12-22-2003 08:24 AM

i'll probably watch it if i'm home, my family usually goes to the movies on christmas day. i love the american idol shows though! i wonder if CT4 will be out with her AK-47 for world idol as well! :p :D

AOIIalum 12-22-2003 09:21 AM

I'll watch it. I always do. We'll just have to go see "Cheaper By The Dozen" early in the day :)

Kevin 12-22-2003 10:58 AM

I'm kind of tired of that show format.

bethany1982 12-22-2003 11:52 AM

No.

GeoffZ 12-22-2003 03:42 PM

I'll watch and root for Kelly.

ZTAngel 12-22-2003 03:52 PM

I'd watch it but I'm doing the whole movie and a Chinese restaurant thing on Christmas. Oh well!

WCUgirl 12-22-2003 08:46 PM

No kidding. I saw a refreshing idea though, the other day. I think it was called "house of dreams", and these people have to live together and build a beautiful house, and vote someone off each week, like survivor, but these people are actually working hard. If any of you have doe Hab. for Hum., you know what I mean. Whoever wins gets to live in the house. I think it sounds better than this World Idol crud.

Sister Havana 12-25-2003 09:41 PM

I am watching it now, actually. :D

smiley21 12-25-2003 09:53 PM

heck no

PrincessPhiSig 12-25-2003 11:01 PM

Watching as we speak... :) I think Kelly Clarkson did great and this British guy seems decent.

Dionysus 12-25-2003 11:03 PM

EggNod1!!

mmmmmm mmmmm mmmmmm gooo00d!!!11

PrincessPhiSig 12-25-2003 11:11 PM

More words on World Idol...

The last guy, Norway, is awesome. Now, with the set, similar to the American Idol set, I believe they want the MCs to be as uncomfortable as possible on those things they call stools. :p

ZTAngel 12-26-2003 01:19 AM

That South African guy was HOT! mmm....Heinz....

I concur. Definitely gorgeous!

Sister Havana 12-26-2003 02:31 AM

I'll third that. Definitely a hottie. :D

mullet81 12-26-2003 03:28 PM

i watched it. I thought the Australian guy was good, so was the British guy and the guy from Norway. And of course Kelly did great.

The rest of them, I thought were horrible. Especially the girl from poland. She was absolutely horrible. And her judge was even more annoying than she was.

All in all - I thought Simon was right, the competition was like comparing a thoughorbreed racehorse with donkeys.

Kelly was the most polished and I thought she stood out from a majority of them, with the exception of the 3 i mentioned above. I think one of them or Kelly will win it.

GeoffZ 12-26-2003 07:43 PM

I thought Kelly did a good job. I figured she would do "Natural Woman". I wasn't feeling the hat, though. Will (UK Idol) was ok. But that version of "Light My Fire" was horrible. I hated the Poland Idol and her judge. It really isn't that much of a competition.

chideltjen 12-26-2003 11:59 PM

I only saw half...

i think each "idol" does well in their own respective countries. i mean the polish girl couldn't sing at all... but then again, maybe english isn't her first language and she probably sounds ten times better in Polish. (And yeah... the judge i was ready to strangle...)

I thought Will was a lil too fruity for my tastes... then again i am a die hard clay aiken fan...:D

the belgium guy was out of his league... get a band and do your own thing... unless he likes doing kareoke with cheesy smoke effects...

Since we couldn't vote for kelly for some odd reason... my brother and i a banking on the norway idol... he rocked and did a good U2 rendition.

Sister Havana 12-27-2003 12:39 AM

You couldn't vote for Kelly because you're from the USA. No one was able to vote for their home country's idol.

Unregistered- 12-31-2003 01:21 AM

I saw bits and pieces of it before GC went down, but aside from Kelly I liked the girl who sang the song from "Jesus Christ, Superstar".

I'll fourth or fifth whoever said the South African guy was hot. He was. :D

navane 12-31-2003 01:30 AM

Unfortunately, I did not see the first installment of the show. I guess the second half will air on New Year's Day?

But yeah, you can't vote for the contestant from your own country. Obviously that would be unfair seeing that some countries have larger populations than others. What's the point in having a contest if everyone votes for their own contestant?

Obviously, since I didn't see the show, I didn't hear the girl from Poland singing. chideltjen makes a good point in that people from non-English speaking countries will have a harder time in a contest like this. Plus, what Eastern Europeans consider "good music" is different than what Middle Eastern, Asian and Western cultures consider good music. (edited to add: bad singing is bad singing no matter the culture or style!!)

By chance, has anyone seen the Eurovision Song Contest? If you have, then you'll know what I mean. FYI - Poland's entry to Eurovision last year was *awesome*; he was like a Polish Bono! :)

At any rate, Will Young from the UK is good and I suspect he'll do well. Kelly will probably do well too!

.....Kelly :)

kddani 01-01-2004 10:35 PM

God these hosts are annoying, they're just so fruity.

Heinz (South Africa) is HOTTTT!!!! Norway does look like a hobbit, but can sing. Belgium scares me. Kelly is awesome of course. Will is so fruity and that was a horrible rendition..... gay cheesy pop version of a Doors song- not working for me.

It'll be interesting to see who wins.....

efcheerBB 01-02-2004 01:25 AM

I didn't watch the show on Christmas, but I did watch the results show tonight. I was rooting for Kelly all the way, but the guy from Norway got first place in all but like one country. When he sung his song again at the end, I have to admit, that I kind of liked it and he was pretty good, Hobbit looking but a good singer. Kelly came in 2nd place unfortunately.

justamom 01-02-2004 09:11 AM

I watched! I felt so sorry for Kelly. Each time she placed 2nd, and the cameras went to her, she looked like a deer caught in the headlights.

I did think a bit of politics entered into it, especially in the rankings of the middle positions. For example, the Arabic vote had Kelly around 5th or 6th (I think). Now, I won't argue that she deserved to be number one, but that low a placement makes one go hmmmmmmmm. THEN AGAIN, it could be the different taste in music!
I wish I could find a site that broke the vote down by countries.

I guess Clay has opened the door for a new "look" in Pop Idols!

The reps announcing the votes from the countries were some very beautiful people too.

The show's announcers??? YIKES! Bring back Seacrest!

I find it odd too. We voted the Pan-Arab girl in our top 3. Kelly was #1 or #2 on every country's list. That German guy was at the bottom of almost every country's list. I thought it was weird that the Arabic vote was the only one who put the Kelly towards the bottom of their list and the German guy as #1. I believe that their voting was completely politically motivated

butterfly2001nc 01-02-2004 11:09 AM

poor Kelly! i liked Kurt but has hoping Kelly would take it!

oh, well...

ZTAngel 01-02-2004 11:44 AM

I like the Norweigan guy and thought he did a great job but I have to wonder if he completely deserved to win. I think mainly the reason he won is not only because he sang "Beautiful Day" so well but because he sound EXACTLY like Bono. They showed a clip of him during the competition in Norway singing another song (can't remember the name) and, once again, he sounded exactly like the original singer. I kinda feel that he tries to sing like the original artist rather than adding his own interpretations to the song. I wonder how he would sound if he was given his own original music to sing.
While I was on a cruise last year, there was a guy who was a vocal impressionist who performed. He sang "Hero" by Enrique Iglesias, "Beautiful Day" by U2, and even "Hit Me Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears and he sound EXACTLY like the original artist. Talented? Yes. But, I wouldn't say he's the best singer in the world as he makes his career trying to sound like other people. I feel that the Norweigan guy does the same thing.

justamom 01-02-2004 12:15 PM

ZTAngel OOOOOOOH, that is ONE thing that drives me crazy! Reminds me of a story about Johnny Mathis (Chances Are, Misty) He has a brother who is said to sound exactly like him.
When asked why he too wasn't performing, the explanation was-The world already has one Johnny Mathis.

Tell me, did anyone think the Spice Girl was lip-synching her song?
I may be wrong, but I thought so. How weak is that?!

That's my number one pet peeve-Performers who's vocal ability is totally created in a sound studio.

Sister Havana 01-02-2004 01:32 PM

Posh was lip syncing. She looked good though. Better than the pics I've seen of her of late!

I wish there would have been a group sing though. I'd have loved that!

And Kurt came in very low in the Pan Arab voting too. I think he was seventh there.

butterfly2001nc 01-02-2004 03:33 PM

Victoria was def. lip synching....but then again a LOT of people do that....more than you may realize

GeoffZ 01-03-2004 05:56 PM

I wanted Kelly to win it. But, oh well. I don't think that many people watched or cared. I heard that Will was pissed afterwards because he didn't win. And I agree that Posh was lip synching. I thought she looked good. But, I don't understand why she was all dressed up and her background dancers weren't.

ZTAngel 01-05-2004 04:45 PM

Who would've guessed Kelly was such a diva?

This is from the New York Post:

January 3, 2004 -- STUNNED "American Idol" champ Kelly Clarkson abruptly left the set of "World Idol" New Years' night after fans snubbed her in favor of a gap-toothed plumber from Norway.
Clarkson, who had been favored to win the competition, appeared dazed by the loss and did not stick around to congratulate Kurt Nilsen, 24, the good-natured father of two who won.

Clarkson placed second.

"We didn't get to talk. I think she went back to her hotel I guess," Nilsen told The Post yesterday.

The talk of the "Idol" world yesterday was how upset Clarkson appeared on the show, which was taped Thursday afternoon in London and broadcast through various time zones across the world.

She appeared to grow increasingly disgruntled as the votes from different regions were tallied and it became clear she was losing to an otherwise-unknown singer from a small Scandinavian country.

Nilsen is a fan of Clarkson. He traveled all the way to New York from Norway last year to hear her sing at Giant Stadium.

It was his first trip to the U.S.

Kurt, too, seemed surprised he could not find her after the show.

"Everybody wanted to talk to me and take pictures," he said. "I didn't get a chance to say goodbye."

What was clear was that winning the first annual showdown of "Idol" winners from around the world will change the young man's life dramatically.

His single is being a released this week in England and discussions are underway to see if it will get a U.S. release.

"We have to now take the next couple of weeks to have meetings," says his manager Jan Fredrik.

If his record is released here, Nilsen will have to deal again with the idea that he doesn't have the classic good looks of a pop music idol.

Despite his new, relative wealth, Kurt says he will not have his teeth fixed to remove what has become his trademark - a wide space between his front teeth. "I'm really happy the way I am because if I changed my look I think people would think that I had [sold out]," Nilsen said.

Nilsen returned to Norway yesterday after spending New Year's day in a London studio were the holiday show was filmed.

He was greeted at the airport in the seaside city of Bergen, by thousands of hysterical fans, a marching band the city's mayor and other assorted dignitaries. He later was congratulated via phone by Norway's Prime Minister.

It was Nilsen's strong performance of U2's hit "Beautiful Day" in a "World Idol" special that aired on Christmas Day that left "Idol" judges and millions of viewers from around the world star-struck and ultimately helped him snare the title of "World Idol."

The show aired in more than 22 countries and was seen by millions of viewers.

butterfly2001nc 01-05-2004 05:21 PM

wow! that's crazy! but really, everyone did kind of pump her up for it considering she was the favorite of the judges, etc.

dzandiloo 01-05-2004 06:34 PM

Interesting story...wonder if Kurt is telling the truth & I don't think it was sour grapes. I definitely saw her shake his hand as he walked down to sing & she was clapping along with the rest of the audience & swaying back & forth w/the music, so who knows? I heard she was actually ill that day & looked bad b/c she felt bad...Who knows what the truth is....

cash78mere 01-05-2004 06:37 PM

i'm glad he won. winning would have done nothing for kelly...it might have even been embarrassing. but this will change that guy's life forever. good for him
