Odd Tidbit - What Do You Think?

in doing some research, i ran across this article and was a little skeeved when i ran across the following excerpts. what do you think?

Preps-to-pros players rely on support system

...Putting down their PlayStation consoles or turning off the latest hit DVD to gather around on beanbags and plush couches to hear Garnett, the den father, are Tracy McGrady, Amare Stoudemire, Tyson Chandler and new rushee LeBron James, among others. ...It's Sigma Kappa. Or Skipped Kollege, er, college. ..."We're definitely like a high-school sorority and I'm saying 'sorority' because we didn't go to college," said Indiana forward Jermaine O'Neal, knowing guys join fraternities. "We all talk by phone or two-way each other, especially when we come to each other's town, and we stick together."

'the hell?

Colonist 12-19-2003 09:29 PM

KG is god...thats all I got :)

SigKapSmurf 12-19-2003 10:13 PM

What's with that?! :(

Kevin 12-19-2003 10:46 PM

I think he made it evident several times in his sound byte that he "didn't go to college"...

2blue 12-19-2003 10:51 PM

I'm not impressed with these prep-to-pros kiddies. To me, they will probably be like the little cute child stars that "everybody" loves until they are not at "cute" age anymore.

They, esp. LeBron, are totally P.R. driven and so are the leeches that promote them. and the suckers that buy into the hype.

Colonist 12-19-2003 11:00 PM

Perhaps you haven't noticed by Lebron James is straight nasty, and has the PPG and skills to back it up. Yeah he was over hyped but he is living up to it, as are guys like Tmac, Kobe, and KG.

I think you should loosen your belt there a bit, zuzu... you're taking their little club just a tad too seriously.

I could be mistaken, but I would be shocked if any of those guys had any idea that there is an NPC sorority named Sigma Kappa. In fact, I would be shocked if they had any idea there was an NPC, come to think of it.

alphaiota 12-20-2003 12:01 AM

well, i don't care of it myself. don't really care for my letters being used to represent them. i earned my letters and think it's disrespectful to see those guys using them like that.

Come on, Sigma Kappa aren't just two random ass Greek letters that someone would pull out. If it was Delta Zeta I'm sure you wouldn't be happy.

Ditto~ chances are at least 9 out of 10 if not greater that they have no clue what Sigma Kappa is, and chances are also equally that high that they don't care. They say what the letters mean to them and you can tell it's sort of a joke. It's almost like people making up fraternities/sororities like SEC and KEG for a joke.

Whoa! Down, Killer!

No, they aren't, ahem, "random ass Greek letters". Did you read the excerpt from the article?

"...It's Sigma Kappa. Or Skipped Kollege, er, college. ..."We're definitely like a high-school sorority and I'm saying 'sorority' because we didn't go to college," said Indiana forward Jermaine O'Neal

Do you have some sort of odd conspiracy theory that there are hordes of teenage boys running around looking for english language word combinations that match up with NPC sororities' names?

Jermaine: "Hey guys, I found a copy of the Baird's Manual. Why don't we go through and find a fraternity, no, wait, a sorority and then make up our own meaning for the letters?"

LeBron: "Wow, Jermaine, that sounds like a lot of fun! I've always wanted to make up my own meaning for sorority letters!"

What are you going to do now? Contact the owner of the Florida Marlins and demand that he change the team's name because they stole your letters? Should I perhaps contact the Detroit Zoo and ask them where they get off using "D" and "Z"? Clearly, those are MY letters, right?

Eclipse 12-20-2003 03:40 AM

Was I the only one laughing because O'Neal said they were "like a high school sorority"? Come on...these guys don't know the difference between a sorority and a fraternity! Plus, it seems to me like the WRITER of the article used the Skipped Kollege/Sigma Kappa thingie. Not the B'ball players. I am sure they are not walking around calling themselves the Sigma Kappas and I doubt they they are running out to get t-shirts made.

PhiPsiRuss 12-20-2003 06:33 AM

It only gets stranger

I read that Jermaine lavaliered LeBron. That's what I read.

Rudey 12-20-2003 06:43 AM

Were they wearing dresses when they were looking in Baird's?

Can I get a second?

Taualumna 12-20-2003 08:33 PM

I agree w/ 2blue, these preps-to-pros will be holding up their local dry cleaner's in 10 years or less.

No offense but you obviously know nothing about basketball KG was one of the top players in the league last year and led them into the playoffs, as were Tmac and Amare Stoudemire. All are making bank especially Tmac, KG, and Bron Bron (who is playing damn good this year)...These guys are all not only set, money-wise, for the rest of their lives but will all be superstars in the NBA for years to come.

As for later comment that they aren't "intelligent" enough...First, if ya didn't realize there are some pretty stupid sorority sisters and as for KG and Bron Bron, they are both mature and have handled the fame well.

When you said "I agree w/ 2blue, these preps-to-pros will be holding up their local dry cleaner's in 10 years or less." you might as well of said they can't play in 10 years they will all still be balling it up in the NBA.

33girl 12-21-2003 07:49 PM

whatever!!! I deleted my posts because I don't want them filthying my count. honestly, if there's a subject I give less of a rat's ass about than pro basketball, I don't know what it is.

I don't know...LeBron wasn't the brightest apple in the bunch when he tried to take my cousin back to the hotel last October. I don't care if he makes gazillions of dollars each year. My college degree is much more valuable.

As far as the NBA goes, it can go suck a monkey's big fat testicles for all I care.

Now where are those freaking Brady Bunch dolls?

Yeah I'm sure he did...not really
Yeah and you know what I'd give up my college degree for nearly $200 million right away and being in the NBA...

No, it just pisses me off when people insult atheletes and assume we are morons because we happen to be good at sports. If I sterotyped a certain group or sorority for example as fat, ugly, or stupid I'd get torn apart but automatically atheletes are morons. So, serious shut up and think before you speak.

Child, you really have so much to learn.

I've met Lebron James and his 50 person entourage, and I have Lakers and Golden State players that are regular customers at my bar/restaurant whenever they're in town. My impression of them is strictly a personal one. I'm not "friends" with any of them, but I've seen how some of them treat my co-workers and customers, and it's unpleasant.

If that's what $$$ will do to a person, I think I'll pass. But they were probably assholes and morons before they signed their NBA contracts, so label really doesn't have anything to do with it.

Finally, this former scholar-athlete would like you to take your "shut up and think before you speak" comment and shove it up your ass. Thanks and have a nice day.

Jealousy is unbecoming...second well this isn't worth my time, you work at a bar I'm not impressed, it looks like that college degree is doing wonders for you.

I am done with bullshit.

Back on topic: I think that it is just a weird coincidence that they used the name Sigma Kappa.

ADPiZXalum 12-22-2003 04:00 PM

They were probably trying to P*** off the Sigma Kappas just like NPC was trying to p*** off that one group by calling rush counselors Rho Chis.

Was there ever a group called Rho Chi? I've never heard of anything like that.

ADPiZXalum 12-22-2003 04:15 PM

It's like some honor society I think, doctors or pharmacists or something like that maybe? Don't anybody quote me on that bc I really don't remember. Anyway, they basically caused a little stink about the use of the term Rho Chi bc that's their name so we use Rho Gammas or something else now.

BSUPhiSig'92 12-22-2003 04:29 PM

Rho Chi is an honorary for Pharmacy majors. We are opening a school of pharmacy here next year, so we had to change regardless. On a side note, I had some representatives of a Pharmacy fraternity from St. Louis College of Pharmacy stop by my office, wanting to start a new chapter of their fraternity when our pharmacy program gets up and running. They explained that at one point they had about ten chapters, but there was only one left active and they wanted to expand again. Their name? Delta Sigma Theta. My reaction was, "You had SOOO better plan on changing that name if you want a chapter here!!!" They honestly had no clue...
