Any Home Remedies out there?
I know there are many people who have learned home remedies from relatives that gives the cure-all for anything.
Do you have any remedies that you would like to share? My grandmother would always give us a mixture of honey and allum(sp?) for colds. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif |
Use a can of coca-cola to clean your toilet bowl. The acid "eats up" that stuff around the rim...
|
When my son was a baby and he had a fever, my mother-in-law would gather a specific type of tea leaves, put them in a warm bath and bathe my son. She said these type of leaves were used to "draw out" the fever. She did the same thing to my husband when he was a baby. He would even pretend to be sick just so that he could have a "bush bath". I thought it was strange, but it worked. My son loved it and always fell asleep right after his bath.
Another thing I learned here is using fresh aloe. It is used for everything here. Even as a tea for tummy aches (I think). I've heard that it is very bitter, though. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif My grandmother always had an aloe plant in our house (NYC) and used it for everything too. Back then, I thought it was just a Puerto Rican/Old Wives Tale thing. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif [This message has been edited by Serenity (edited March 18, 2001).] |
Chamomile tea helps alleviate cramps. Also you can use chamomile to give yourself a facial.
Glass of lemon water in the morning cleanses your system. A geranium tincture, (geranium, alcohol, and water), is excellent for eczema. It is also just a good overall toner. I found out this winter how well this really works. Of course, gargling with salt water really helps a sore throat. I am full of these things. |
Peppermint or spearmint for an upset stomach is wonderful.I usually drink a mint tea but mint candies work just as well. Also I have heard to use cloves on a toothache until you can get to the dentist.A hot toddy also helps relieves a cold(especially at bedtime) and if you are have sinus problems put Vicks Vapo Rub right directly on the place you have sinus pressure. It will make your eyes water but it will help.
|
The first one I thought of is really gross...Putting earwax on a cold sore will make it go away. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif
using warm salt water to draw the nasiness out of an absess(sp)on infected gums or tooth after having a baby you should use a little of the old school lysol(the brown kind) in your first bath at home, it will clean away any infection in stitches. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif Hot toddies will make you sweat out a fever (a combo of Jack Daniels, lemon, honey, and tea) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif |

Echinacea (sp) or Goldenseal tea is used to build the immune system. Goldenseal is VERY BITTER, so use lemon and honey to make it taste better. I use aloe for cuts and scratches and chamomile tea is good for cramps or just to relax http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif |

My mother and grandmother used to give me cerassie tea to clear my face up and clear my system out. It's very bitter http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif , but it works. |

My dad who's a dentist says when your gums are bleeding due to a minor periodontal infection, brush with a paste of Arm&Hammer's Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide. It will clear up the infection.
If you want to lighten your hair naturally, put 2 tlbsp. of lemon juice to 1 cup of water with essential hair oils into a spray bottle and spray your wet hair while you're sun bathing... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif For us SoCals out there!!! Wasn't today nice!!! Summer's almost here! Drink cranberry/rasberry juice to clear up any yeast/urinary tract infections. I forgot how long you'd do it. But drinking either one or mixture thereof, is good for you anyways... And always drink 8 glasses of water, daily... |
For babies: For constipation, mix one tablespoon of Karo syrup in a water bottle and shake well . For severe constipation, give him about one half tablespoon straight. Wait a little while and YOU WILL SEE RESULTS! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif (Do not use honey. It carries bacteria that can make your little one very sick.)
|
My mom says that for babies with hiccups, take two matches and cross them in the mold of a baby's head. She said it worked for us, I wouldn't know.
For canker sores, rub the sores with salt(on a Q-tip) and/or gargle with peroxide(DO NOT SWALLOW). Trust me, it works. |
This has been used for all of us in the family that have gotten sick-I don't know if any of ya'll use this...
Whenever one of us catches a cold, my mother/aunts/grandma make "special" tea. They take any brand plain (Lipton) tea, lemon, and honey-mix until sweet. Then add a teaspoon of Vicks VapoRub (yeah I know!) to it and drink. I know that Vicks wasn't made to eat, but we've been using this for generations down-it works! ------------------ "Mind ya own, stay true to ya own, be ya own." Peace and God Bless Classy_Diva5 |
For an upset stomach mix baking soda and water in a small glass and drink. It taste horrible but it works.

Also, placing a little cereal in a baby's formula will help them to sleep all night. Rubbing a colicy baby's tummy in circular motions will help relieve the colic (which is basically gas). OK, this is oooold school & nasty: Baby urine is supposed to clear up your skin. Something about the pH balance and the purity of it. I don't know... one of ya'll try it first and let me know! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif **I had to edit this to add ---- you're supposed to wipe it on your skin, not DRINK it!*** [This message has been edited by tickledpink (edited March 22, 2001).] |

So what is good for heartburn?
I'm trying my best to avoid the purple pill called Nexium. |

If you get heartburn at night, don't eat a few hours before going to bed and sleep with your head propped up on a few stacked pillows. |

All Hail the Amazing Banana
Pretty interesting -- the Banana!
Home Remedy -- If you want a quick fix for flagging energy levels there's no better snack than a banana. Containing three natural sugars -- sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber a banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes. But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions making it a must to add to your daily diet. Depression -- According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin known to make you relax, improve your mood... and generally make you feel happier. PMS -- Forget the pills -- eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood. Anemia -- High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia. Blood Pressure -- This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium, yet low in salt, making it the perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit: It's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke. Brain Power -- 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert. Constipation -- High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives. Hangovers -- One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and rehydrate your system. Heartburn -- Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief. Morning Sickness -- Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness. Mosquito bites -- Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation. Nerves -- Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system. Ulcers -- The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chroniculcer cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach. Temperature control -- Many other cultures see bananas as a 'cooling' fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand, for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)-- Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer, tryptophan. Smoking -- Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal. Stress -- Potassium is a vital mineral which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates the body's water-balance. When stressed, our metabolic rate rises thereby reducing our potassium levels... These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack. Strokes -- According to research in 'The New England Journal of Medicine' eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%! Warts -- Those keen on natural alternatives swear that, if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape! So you see, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When compared to an apple, bananas has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. Being rich also in potassium, it is one of the best value foods around. So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase to say, "A Banana a day keeps the doctor away!" |

RE-POSTING .....Same items
Okay, I did'nt navagate a search before startin a thread so I will re-post it here because the thread I did will be deleted soon...
My grandmoma said : Cold Toddy Whiskey+Honey+Lemon)or lemon juice)+vinegar = cold gone (worked for me and my son my family uses this one) Hair Growth Glovers Mane + Petroleum Jelly (mix well) grew my hair and others I know that used it that had hair breakage around the edges, especially kids. This is also good for dandruff ( put on hour before wasshing). My mom used this on us as kids and I still use it. WARNING!!! the smell is not attractive, but heck, it grew my familys hair. (lol) Sinus Warm water+1/2 tsb of salt (dislove the salt) sniff up your nose and then let it run out (keep doing this for half a cup). This dries you up. this is good for sinus pressure as well. and the list goes on.....if you have any questions lets ask the board too.... Disclaimer: If you have a medical condition seek medical help. These are not for all and I am not a doctor (smile). We are just sharing things that have helped us or we heard of. |
My mother's favorite for reducing a fever (and i hated it w/ a passion!)
Take about 2-3 potatoes (depends on size) and slice about 1" thick. Sprinkle with salt and place in a dishtowel still in sliced formation. Wrap lengthwise in towel and then place towel around forehead and secure in back of head with safety pin. When the potatoes turn black the fever is broken. I hated this remedy because the potato headband was hot and it made me sweat, but darned if it didn't work every time. Even my hubby has had this done to him as a child and it worked for him. No tylenol, no aleve. Just potatoes and salt. |
Take 1 teaspoon of baking soda with water before eating collard greens. It helps prevent gas.
Just found this out from my elderly great-aunts last night. Who'da thunk it????   :D |
For those blemishes that are not there in the morning but during the day you see it coming (pms): when you get home that night, put a dap of white toothpaste (not the gel) on the pimple. sleep with it on, wash it in the morning with your regular cleaning routine; This will dry it out and be gone the next day or so.

Homemade Cleaning Products
My question isn't exactly about home remedies, but somewhere along those lines. I found some recipes for making homemade cleaning solutions (dish detergent, disinfectant, etc). One of the ingredients that is required is liquid Castile soap. Does anyone know what type of store would sell it? I'm not sure if it's something I'd find at Wally World or if it would be found at a specialty store of some type.
|
Not sure if this is considered a home remedy or not but......
For pots & skillets that have hard to scrub residue left in them from cooking add 2 dryer sheets and warm to hot water and let soak while washing other dishers. Chemicals from dryer sheets pulls the residue and leaves no scrubbing for you. I swear by this anytime Mr. #1 Leading Lady cooks. He thinks everything should be cooked on HIGH. |
A spoonful of peanutbutter cures the hiccups. coats the back of the throat and the muscle that is causing the hiccup.

I'm a health nut so I must introduce Braggs ACV. I don't have to tell many of you the medicinal benefits of ACV but I can't help but spread this liquid wonder. (gosh, I sound like a gameshow host). I use it religiously and it works wonders. It heals all types of ailments and is healthier for your body than commercial vinegars. My mom is a diabetic and she has her sick days but since she's been taking the vinegar drink daily the past few years her symptoms have almost dissipated. It's been good at helping to keep her blood sugar under control. Trust me, this product(and other products they offer) really work. Check out the site.
