What Chapter Offices have you held, which offices did you enjoy.

Recently I reviewed some old chapter materials and realized I had held 3-4 chapter offices. upon review of my folders I realized I enjoyed certain jobs and disliked other positions and I've never seen a thread asking the same or a similar question so here goes my list.

Alumni Relations 2 semesters, I loved this job, I planned the golf tourney, alumni weekend( got to hire a band and set up a catered breakfast and write, edit and produce a four page newsletter three times the newsletter had a circulation of 700+. I met 40-50 alumni and I really felt like I helped my chapter.

Pledge Trainer 1 semester, Yuck, hazing was a big issue, the Chapter President and I really pushed to cut hazing and we caught tons of abuse from the chapter die hards. Very disappointing, the chapters bad spirit hurt the pledge class and out of 6 pledges only one was initiated.

DU Convention Delegate. Great, I enjoyed meeting other chapter's members and I really saw what an international fraternity was all about.

House Improvement Fund Mngr, 2 semesters, Mixed bag, Good side I raised about 5 k from alumni and from passing a proposal that the coke and beer machine ( yes we converted a coke machine to sell bottled beer 24/7 and the pledges had to keep it stocked) money be reserved for house improvements.
We repaved our front driveway and painted the front of our chapter house with these funds.
Downside I caught a lot of heat for not getting a big screen TV and or putting solid core doors in to the chapter rooms.

Overall I enjoyed working on chapter projects.

For Alpha Phi Omega:

One year as Vice President of Communications. I was second in command of the chapter and in charge of the chapter email list and website. I really liked this job, but the only drawback was that when the president was absent, people acted like they forgot the order of succession!

Voting Delegate for the 2000 National Convention. THA BEST! I enjoyed everything about the convention, and it's just too bad that alumni can't be delegates for their associations.

One semester as Vice President of Pledging. A lot of work and I did it my last semester in college. I loved it though, and I am close to the line that I brought in. One thing about doing it as a second semester senior, you can get away with taking more risks -- that is, trying things that haven't been done before. If those new things fail, they can't yell at you for very long. ;)

For Alpha Phi Alpha:

Editor of the Chapter Newsletter. Hate it. Will never do it again. Requires too much work every month.

Webmaster. Love it. Had experience already and the chapter had no website to speak of, so it was fun creating it from the ground up. Allows me to work independently, but cooperatively with other Brothers.

Kevin 12-12-2003 09:57 AM

I was Marshal (new member educator) for awhile. That was one of my favorite jobs. We don't haze, I taught leadership workshops, workshops on history and we did hold brotherhood activities. It was pretty good fun.

Then I was elected to Lieutenant Commander (that's like executive VP). I was the #2 guy. It was cool because of what I was able to accomplish -- leading the executive council that finally achieved getting our charter. That was pretty cool. I also revised our constitution and bylaws a few times in this office. As LC, I think I changed-up the way our exec was run. Most of what I started doing is still done today. The only downside to an office like this is that you have to put up with drama from the membership.

After that I was treasurer. I'd only recommend this job for someone that really loves their chapter. I was able to guide us through our first BIG formal, the transition from colony to chapter, all that stuff. I accomplished a lot, but the treasurer doesn't make friends. Especially when he's good at keeping people paid up:D

Right now, I'm recorder for the alumni chapter. It's alright. I put out the newsletter, keep contact with alums and coordinate communications with the alumni chapter. Again... lots of work.

this is a novel!

Chapter Offices:

Recruitment- tough year, the previous Recruitment Chair had quit the chapter, I was a new initiate and got the office a week before Recruitment started.. BUT, we doubled our chapter size anyway.

Ritual- Loved this one, lots of fun

Membership- Enjoyed this one too

As an alum:

House Association and Membership Advisor: Both a lot of fun, got our chapter their first official house ever, furnished it, refinished furniture, went house hunting, it was fun.

Chapter Advisor: Toughest job you'll ever love. Highs and lows, quite a roller coaster but very rewarding in the end.

Finance Advisor: Ick, I'm not a financial person!

International Finance Committee: How did I end up doing that? No idea! Oversaw 7 chapters' finances, reviewing reports, etc. Tough job, tedious. Did it for 5 or 6 years though.

Province Director: Best one yet. Love seeing chapters pull themselves up to excellence! Love seeing the "whole picture" of each chapter rather than just the financial aspect. Still get quite a bit of direct contact with the collegians who are just awesome women to work with. Love helping them to be the best chapters they can possibly be!

Athletics - this was my first position and I was so excited about it! I really love sports, so I had a good time organizing the sports teams, but now I really like just being a member of the team, not the one who tells everyone what to do. It's also a big pain in the butt to find football coaches, etc. The only thing that really sucked was the fact that my first semester as a sister, I was Alpha Phi's Greek Week representative. I had no clue what I was getting myself into. We've since then recommended that new sisters shouldn't have this position because myself and the girl after me were both freshmen, and we had a hard time in particular with Greek Week.

Historian - one of my favorite positions (ok, I'll admit, I liked them all)! I've always been a picture person, and scrapbooking became an addiction. I got us a nice, smaller book from Creative Memories as opposed to those huge wooden albums that were just huge and impossible to lug around. The girls like it because it's more portable and easier to just plop down with it in your lap and thumb through it. I had to get my own scrapbook after I passed on the job to someone else. lol.

Guard - basically like an assistant Ritual person. It really wasn't much of a position when I had it, but I'm trying to help the girls make it what it should be. My little sister was recently appointed and I'm so proud! The most important thing about this position was it inspired me and made me realize how highly I placed Ritual. Hence...

Chaplain - I took on this position because at the time, I wasn't pleased with the direction of the chapter and wanted to make a positive influence on the new members, but didn't have time to be New Member Ed. I thought the best way to do that was to emphasize the importance of Ritual and make sure the girls understood it. I hoped that if they truly believed and understood the Ritual, they'd be better members in the end. While one of the most difficult positions I ever had, it was also the most fulfilling. I started crying this year at my last initiation, seeing 16 amazing women join our sisterhood. It was a truly powerful moment, because we had gone from obtaining only one girl at Formal Recruitment exactly one year earlier, to getting 13 and COBing the other 3 (2 were girls who had actually been pinned right before we left school in the Spring). I am proud of my chapter and the leaders I leave behind.

Director of Music - a new/old position that I revived. Girls were complaining that they were tired of the same old songs so they wanted me to teach new ones (and in the end, they learned one song because they didn't like any of the ones I taught! so :p ). In any event, we got much better at singing and I think new sisters learned the songs much quicker than they did before. It was also handy to be Chaplain at the same time because I was able to have "New Sister Education" sessions and teach them Ritual and songs at the same time. Otherwise I know I would have never been able to get them there to sing!

I never had an Executive Committee position, and sometimes I wish I had because I think I could have done some good things. But at the same time, having all of these smaller positions made me realize that it's not just always the "big dogs" that do all the work, but any group is largely dependent on everyone else to do their jobs. I've also learned that when you get all your work done, you get a lot of respect, sometimes more than the people above you have!

It's been really hard to not have a position my last semester, but I know it's important to let the new girls step up to the plate and have a chance and gain the experience they need. I'm just going to have to get involved with an alumnae group. ;)

RedRoseSAI 12-12-2003 12:43 PM

College Chapter:

Sargeant-at-Arms - Boring...not much to it, really

Ritual - Again, not very labor intensive, although I did enjoy my part during the initiation ceremony.

Membership - Loved it! As our VP Membership, I was in charge of rush and pledge training. It wasn't a successful term, numbers-wise, but we did take that time to put lots of new policies in place (many of which I believe the chapter is still using).

Webmaster - Lots of fun.

Alumnae Chapter:

Fraternity Ed Chair - Probably would have been better if we had time for FrEd at meetings.

Membership - It's going ok. Would be better if my computer hadn't died and taken all the data with it. I'm still working on getting it back, so hopefully next year things will be better.

Social Advisor for local college chapter - I'm working to improve relations between the two chapters, and I think we're headed in the right direction, albeit slowly. Keeping fingers crossed for the future...

sigtau305 12-12-2003 12:52 PM

IFC Delegate : I learned a lot about the different Organizations when I was IFC V.P. I have a greater appreciation and respect for them. I enjoy it, but We didn't get much done like we wanted.

Philanthropy Chairman- I enjoyed doing various Fundraisers for different Charities, Especially for Our Books For Kids National philanthropy. Bringing in 827 books was the most we ever had.

Judicial Board: Good Experience.

Voting Delegate : This was by far the best time of my life as a member. Voting on something important which would help the Fraternity was a experience I'll never forget.

ETA: Hopefully, for this spring semester, I'll be the new Rush Chairman. Keep your Fingers Crossed.:)

BSUPhiSig'92 12-12-2003 01:36 PM

Homecoming Chair: Great. Planned a week's worth of events with a sorority that was really enthusiastic about it. I've been told by many brothers that was the best homecoming ever!

Fundraising: Not so great. Had a very difficult time getting people to put in the effort required to make money. No one in my chapter seemed to enjoy fundraising. I didn't enjoy this.

House Manager-Mixed bag. Got to play with power tools, which I enjoy. Had to resort to brute force to get people to do their house duties (especially clean the bathroom)

Secretary- Pretty good, the easiest position on Exec for us. A good transition office.

President- Call me a masochist, but I really enjoyed being president despite the stress and headaches. I liked getting to know the other presidents and getting to have more input into Greek LIfe as a whole. I actually had to address an audience of 500+ Phi Sigs to talk about our experience as a pilot chapter with the Brotherhood Program.

As an Alum:

Chapter Advisor- I have to agree, the toughest job you'll ever love. I did it for 4 years.

House Corp President- The high would be our chapter house renovation. The low would be dealing with people who were way behind on rent.

SigK_Bama 12-12-2003 01:37 PM

Activities and Intramurals: was a rough thing to jump into because I was a frosh and didn't understand that there were a sizeable amount of unmotivated people in my chapter. I went to all of the intramural meetings and tried to recruit the sisters to be on the teams and most of them would have nothing to do with sports and getting dirty or sweaty. I played in every sport we signed up for that year, I was buff :D For Activities, I just went to the fraternity meetings for their philanthropy events. I got pissed when not many people came to the events and we lost participation points, but everyone eventually got better about it.

Public Relations: All I did was decorate a board for our chapter downstairs in the UC once per semester with the new girls' names on it.

Recording Secretary: important job for many reasons, and I didn't mind it most of the time. However, I was also the person who kept up with everyone's points for attending events and it sucked to be the one to tell the girls who didn't get enough points that they couldn't go to Formal or whatever was going on. I got bitched at a LOT. But overall, it was fine.

President: for almost the entire time I held this position, I felt like I was babysitting 30-40 grown women who acted like children. I was probably seen as a "cool" President and this may sound conceited, but I was a "big fish in a little bowl" in my chapter. Most everyone went along with what I said. I got to see a side of certain people that I never would have seen before and while it was definitely eye-opening to know that I had that much power in the chapter and could control so many things, it was also scary to know that I had almost all of the power. Like, it was my butt on the line if anything went wrong. I got stressed, probably too much to the point where it affected how I did my job, and I got bitched at by old alums. The same people who only came by to complain about us, and then we didn't see them again until we were "in trouble". Ridiculous. Anyway, it was a great leadership opportuity and it taught me a lot about myself and my limits, but I'd definitely do a few things different if I had to go through it again.

Wow, how's that for pouring my heart out!:p

AEPhiSierra 12-12-2003 02:45 PM

I have held a couple of positions. They're in the order I held them though some overlap:

Scholarship - boring. keep track of grades, give out cookies when people do well on tests, organize text book exchange. Not really much you can do with until recently when Second Aves was made her responsibility(Second Avenues is our national program for personal development. basically workshops or progams for things like resume writing, team building, health issues, study habits, etc.)

IGC Rep - So much drama and politics but also so important. One of the positions I knew I wanted when I was pledging because I liked doing student gov't in hs and i thought it was kind of similar.

NPC Delegate and NPC E-board - During Rush its a lot of work but its so important that its handled right.

Secretary - Easy. I was a mid-season replacement for this position during my first semester as a sister when a sister resigned. I learned how E-board function through serving in the position.

VP Minor Board - Partly good because I got to shape the chapter a lot because I was in charge of all the positions not on E-board and partly annoying because half your job is chasing people to do their jobs.

New Member Educator - Its great because you get introduce new women to your sorority and greek life. Plus since its such a popular position that its such a vote of confidence from your sisters just to receive it.

President - A LOT of work but very rewarding. It's great to be able to give back and to keep the chapter on course. Also I like the connection with national because if I wasn't President I don't think I would have ever really understood how national works. Downside is that everything that goes wrong is considered your fault and if you make a decision some people don't like you get a lot of attitude

ADPiZXalum 12-12-2003 03:06 PM

offices

Homecoming Chair
Spirit Chair
TShirt Chair--one of my faveorite!! I was determined to not have any more STUPID looking shirts!
Director of Standards and Ethics--as scary and unpopular as the title sounds.
Recruitment Vice President--Definitely the hardest (our chapter is struggling with numbers) but most rewarding. I cried my senior year when I had to pass it on to someone else. :)

DWAlphaGam 12-12-2003 03:54 PM

Collegiate offices:

*VP Operations - I thought this was enjoyable. It wasn't too difficult; the worst part of it was dealing with attendance issues and doing the EC minutes every month.

*VP Scholarship (1 semester, then became President) - This was an easy job because my chapter always did very well in school.

*President (1 semester) - I took over when the President before me that no one could stand finally realized she was screwing up big-time and went early alum status. I basically spent that whole semester cleaning up the horrendous mess she made of the chapter...I know I should never talk ill of a sister, but she was seriously the WORST and she made everyone's life miserable! All in all, though, I think it was rewarding to get things back on track and to see the chapter succeeding after I finished with the office.

Alumna Advisor for:

*Scholarship team (VP Scholarship & Social Coordinator) - Again, this isn't too difficult because the chapter doesn't really have any scholarship problems.

*Alumnae Relations - This is challenging, but I like doing it because I think it is an important and often overlooked area in the collegiate chapter. I always regretted not trying to do more with the alumnae while I was in school, so it gives me an opportunity to do something that I always meant to do anyway. I also have a bit of a selfish reason, which is that don't want to lose touch with my sisters, so I want the chapter to keep us together as much as possible.

***edited because I didn't answer the second part of the question.

APO

Membership Vice President - Not the popular job. It was hard but I enjoyed it.

Voting Delegate 2002 Nationals: Long hours, but I got to go to New Orleans!

Next Year: New Member Ed. : Looking forward to it. It should be fun

D Phi E

Risk Management: pretty easy job.

Historian: I liked making the scrapbook, showed off my creative side.

Next year: Philanthropy: I get to run the male beauty pagent we have here. It's going to be a lot of work but I can't wait!

Buttonz 12-12-2003 04:05 PM

NME...I love it. I love teaching NM's about SDT and it gives you a good chance to bond with the NMs.

Secetary: Not bad during meeting, but when you have no time to type up min., it gets annoying.

Rush Ass: I like it. It gives you a chance to see what rush is all about...bad thing is if something gets wrong you get blamed.

Webmistress: Good if you have the time and the skills. It was ok, I can't say i am sad to give it up/

Historian: A breeze for me, as I always have a camrea around.

I am also taking on Aumnae Chair for next semster.

AUDeltaGam 12-12-2003 04:21 PM

In Delta Gamma:

I have served (and am currently serving on) Chapter Management Team which I enjoy because I love knowing what all the officers are planning.

Honor Board: which is Standards. I liked it because I got really close to the girls on HB, but it bothered me when girls got called in because of stupid things.

I am currently Director of Social Awareness. I am the chapter hostess and am in charge of etiquette presentations. I am really enjoying it so far and my big presentation is going to be Wedding Etiquette!!

I have only held one position and that was of the Alumnae/Spirit chair. It has been fun to be the alumnae chair. It was really exciting when I received an email from our recolonizing president since I had learned about her during my new member term. It has been a blast keeping in touch with the other Beta Beta alumnae and I will be sad when I have to officially hand it over to the next chair. I think that this has also been a rewarding chair for me since I get to know the wonderful alumnae that we have and not that many actives get to the older alumnae since they don't typically call them or email them and they weren't here while we have been. What was really wierd was adding my own name to the contact list. I hope that the next person enjoys the position as much as I did.

Glitter650 12-13-2003 02:57 PM

I have been Scholarship Chair, Scribe, Tribune, and am currently acting as "rush ass" :D I just enjoy being on E board... but I guess my favorite position has been recruitment because I get to plan events... my other positions were really more paper work oriented.. and I like planning events. :D

ThetaPrincess24 12-13-2003 03:05 PM

I've only held two positions in my Theta chapter because I pledged as a Junior so there wasnt time for more :(
But I held Junior Panhellenic Delegate and Scholarship Chair. I also served on three committees (Bylaws, House, Scholarship).

In Alpha Kappa Psi before I transferred I was testkeeper, and served on the fundraising and membership committees.

Alpha Phi Omega--didnt hold an office but was on several committees.

I hope to add more offices to Theta as an Alumnae member :)

Sister Havana 12-13-2003 03:48 PM

In Alpha Phi Omega:

I was Campus Activities Chair one semester.
My final semester, I was VAX chair (showing my age!) in charge of sending out the chapter email. I was also Mu Chapter's very first webmaster...I created our page! (I worked in the computer lab so I had a lot of time to spend on it. :D ) That was my favorite position.

I also served on several committees. We were required to serve on at least one each semester when I was there. My favorite was membership committee.

In Lambda Omega Pi:
I am Vice President and co-webmaster.

alfuzzxi 12-13-2003 04:11 PM

I feel really lucky... I have had the best positions, I wouldn't change a thing.

My very first position was Ritual Chair- this was great because as a new sister I was able to learn more about our ritual .

New Member Orientation Chair- So much fun! It felt like I was a new member again--I got to experience all of the same feeligs over again with the new girls. I loved being able to teach them about why Alpha Xi Delta is so wonderful.

Membership VP- I loved it! A lot of work..b/c I basically had to reorganize the position.. but it paid off, we did wonderful in recruitment that semester. That semester we had the best decorations, ideas, etc.. during each round during formal recruitment.

Chapter Life VP- I liked this position.. but maybe it was more stress than it was worth. I got to plan a Battle of the Bands contest- where we raising money for our philanthropy. This was a very stressful time- because I got stuck planning this huge event by myself... while at the same time was expected to plan formal...thankfully everything came together great. I think I would have been able to enjoy this position more if there hadn't been so much drama going on in our executive council at the same time.

I think all of these positions have been great.. because I love planning and organizing things... I like having a chance to use my creativity.

It sounds like you were a charter member and probably graduated right around the same time the chapter was installed, which would leave no time left to hold an office.

Am I right?

hannahgirl 12-14-2003 02:01 AM

In DG....

VP Member Education (2001) - I loved this office because I got to be involved with the new members during their NM period. During the fall semester we doubled our size and had 32 new members which was really hard to keep track of but was also really rewarding. I also had to provide programs for the chapter in order to educate them on things like finance, wellness, etc.

VP Membership (2003) - Being in charge of recruitment is one of the hardest and most stressful things that someone can do, however, it is rewarding once you see the results. My favorite part of this office was planning for preference because I got to make it perfect and decorate it exactly how I wanted it. Since it was my last year, I just wanted everything to be memorable. The most stressful was getting everything organized in time to turn lists into Greek Life for invites....we were late a couple times but oh well....no biggie.

Member-at-Large Honor Board (2003) - I enjoyed this office because I was able to help members who needed it and see what our standards board was all about. The thing that really upset me about being in this office was seeing my great grand little terminate from the chapter. :(

I wish that I would've taken more offices in the chapter, but I'm glad that I didn't take one my first active year and also that I took my third year off because it gave me a chance to get involved on campus Panhellenic and in other organizations on campus.

PrincessHeather 12-14-2003 04:07 AM

In Phi Sig:

Bursar (2001-2002): This is our version of treasurer. I was incharge of all incoming and outgoing money for the chapter. Honestly this was tough as my first position in the chapter. I was a baby on Eboard; everyone else was a lot older and more experienced. But I am so glad I had it because it taught and prepared me well for all my future positions

Membership Recruitment Chair (2002-2003): This position was sooo fun! I love planning events and I just love rush. This position was so rewarding. You knew you did your job when you saw your chapter grow.

Archon (2003-2004): This is our version of President. I love it. I think my other two positions prepared me so well...I'm not easily stressed anymore and when minor slip ups happen its not the end of the world.

Committee chairs I have had:
Parent's Club (2002-2003): my job was to provide relations between our parents and our chapter. I held a parents dinner in the fall. put out a newsletter and holiday photo to all our parents. and I conducted a picnic for our parents in the spring. I really liked this one

Public Relations (2003-2004): I love making posters. give me a paint brush and glitter and I go to town :p

Campus Relations (2003-2004): this chair is in charge of attending different meetings on campus that benefit our chapter. (like homecoming and greek week: since its planned by a general greek council and not NPC or IFC). this position is ok. but I feel guilty when I delegate to others to attend the meeting instead of myself.

next year:
Vice Archon: this is going to be fun. I'm nuts for taking it on but I know i'll enjoy it.

VP of Recruitment for Panhellenic: I have wanted this position for soooo long. this is going to be a blast.

(and yea Eboard members can be on Pan at the same time in my chapter. just not our panhellenic delegate. ;) )

jonsagara 12-14-2003 04:33 AM

My first office was as the ritualist. That rocked for obvious reasons.

My second office was as El Presidente. Tough at times, but the experience was worth it.

[EDIT] Okay, Webmaster, but that's not really an office in my case. It's just something I am able to contribute to the fraternity as an alumnus. [/EDIT]

Tom Earp 12-14-2003 12:08 PM

SAEAlum,

you are so right almost!:)

I was married my senior year. From starting the local with no memembers in the Fall Sem of 1965, to the Colonization at the end of the School year (Yep, within the school year), to coming back for our Chartering in 1969.

It was without a doubt, The Most Rewarding time of my life:)

It is some what like inventing something or starting a family and watching it grow.

Not only being a LXA and meeting a few of my Brothers from Chapters I have visted, by being on GreekChat, I have met so many more of not only My Brothers, but Brothers and Sisters of so many more Organizations.

By the way, Brother J S does not do himself justice just saying webmaster! Jon, Brother I admire what you are doing!

jharb 12-14-2003 12:19 PM

In my chapter I've held several positions:

Assistant Secretary: almost a corresponding secretary position. I sent out thank you notes, flowers and things like that. I liked this position because it's fun to write notes to other chapters! :)

Recruitment Interest Group Captain: We were in charge of anything that our Recruitment chair and VP Social needed help with.

Recording Secretary: As recording secretary you take the minutes for meetings, plan pledging and initiation ceremonies, take attendance, turn in the roster and the bylaws. I enjoyed my time on exec, but at the same time this position was really stressful since it is a lot of planning!

Chairman of the Bylaws Committee: this was exactly what it sounds like :) pretty cut and dried! lol!

For the Panhellenic Association I'll be the VP Finance for the upcoming year. I can't wait to gain a new experience even if I have to disaffiliate!

breathesgelatin 12-14-2003 01:13 PM

I have been

Recruitment Interest Group Captain (just like jharb! aww)

Preference Night Chair (an assistant to recruitment chair)

Assistant Secretary (the secretary went abroad during our short term one year)

Membership Chair

SAEalumnus 12-15-2003 12:23 AM

I had to dig up my old list to find all of these...

Following my initiation in the fall of 1998, I was:

Jan 99 - Dec 99
Interfraternity Council Rep (appointed)
[12 months in office]

This position wasn't terribly exciting, but it did provide a good introduction to campus/Greek politics.

Feb 99 - Feb 00
Pledge Educator (elected)
[12 months in office]

Easily one of my most favorite positions. I re-wrote the chapter's pledge program from scratch - it was described by a staff member at the national office as "award worthy" (his words) - and it's still the same program in use today apart from the minor modifications each Pledge Educator makes to suit his own agenda.

Jan 00 - Jan 01
IFC VP of Membership (1st in line to the presidency/elected)
[12 months in office]

An eye-opening position to be sure. I was in charge of recruitment for all of the NIC fraternities on campus and spent most of my time dealing with chapter presidents and rush/recruitment chairmen. Some of these individuals turned out to be whiny little biatches when it came to trying to get their rival chapters in trouble. Most of them were very easy to work with. I also got to preside over the meeting in which IFC's bylaws were replaced with an entirely new document (the IFC President was one of the authors and wanted to participate in debate).

Feb 00 - Feb 01
Eminent Archon (Chapter President/elected)
[12 months in office]

Simultaneously the most rewarding and most aggravating position I ever held. I got so much out of this in terms of preparation for real life and leadership training, but had so many headaches and so much work to do that I'm surprised I survived my term with my sanity intact.

Feb 00 - Feb 01
Greek Council Representative (appointed)
[12 months in office]

This was a fairly stress-free position (very much like IFC Rep, except that the Greek Council is the parent organization of IFC, so it includes all GLOs). The meetings weren't terribly exciting, but I got to interact with all of the Greek leaders which was great.

Feb 00 - Jun 01
Alumni Relations Chairman (appointed)
[16 months in office]

I kind of fell into this position after being chapter president. It was nice being able to keep in touch with (most of) the alumni, but the level of apathy in my chapter prevented much of anything from happening to involve very many of them.

Feb 00 - Feb 01
Eminent Chronicler (historian/appointed)
[12 months in office]

I appointed myself to this position since no one else would ever have done it. I traced the entire history of my chapter's membership from the conception of the idea to start the chapter to the present including a complete membership directory. The job was really just a matter of collecting and compiling data, but since I love fraternity history, it was a lot of fun.

Sep 00 - Jun 01
House Co-Manager (appointed)
[10 months in office]

Typical duties... the position was shared with my vice president who was a resident of the house (I wasn't). The chapter advisor appointed both of us.

Nov 00 - Feb 01
acting Eminent Treasurer (position shared with a past chapter treasurer after the then-current treasurer had to be relieved of his position - the past E.T. got the title and access to the accounts, I got the books and weekly errands to the bank)
[4 months in office]

I could easily have appointed myself as Eminent Treasurer after firing the original E.T., but figured the same person having the titles of President and Treasurer at the same time was a bad idea. The man to whom I gave the title of Eminent Treasurer for the remainder of the term is one of my most trusted friends (and the one who was responsible for getting me to pledge in the first place) and had been treasurer for two terms previously.

Mar 01 - Sep 02
Bylaws Author and Committee Chair (appointed)
[18 months in office]

This was a position I had to take. Our bylaws were crap, honestly. This was right after my term as chapter president ended. I asked the new vice president (who was in charge of all committees) for the appointment with the specific intention of revising the bylaws. I got my wish and was informed that I would be a committee of one (the V.P. felt I would do fine without any help from anyone else). I drew from the chapter's original bylaws, the U.S. Constitution, Robert's Rules of Order, and my own inspiration and created the framework for the chapter's current set of bylaws. My document was adopted unanimously by the chapter, but has been amended at least twice since. This is actually the position of which I am most proud.

After the above 120 months worth of positions (not to mention the 12 months I held an EBoard position in an academic student organization from May 00 to May 01), I decided to go inactive my last year in college to be able to concentrate on graduating. Those members of my chapter who argued the loudest about me going inactive, interestingly enough, were the same who did the least work in the chapter. Go figure.

Let's see...

During the Fall of 2002, I took over the Student Federation Representative office a few weeks into the semester. (The girl who'd been doing it for the past year could no longer attend meetings due to time constraints).

From January 2003 until present, I have served as our chapter Recording Secretary, and in January 2004 I will begin a year as Social Chairman. :) I am very excited about my new office!

I have also been chairman of the philanthropy interest group for the past year, which isn't really an office, per se. :)

Let's see if I can remember all the offices I held.......

Panhellenic Rep: Loved it because I got to meet and work with lots of great women from other sororities. Having to attend rush infraction hearings was kind of annoying though.

Ritualist: Loved it. I've loved our ritual ever since I went through it myself. I was the ritualist who didn't know the ritual for a while... we were a colony of new members, and we were recruiting additional members, so we needed a ritualist to oversee their new member ceremonies.

Fundraising Co-chair: Hated it because my co-chair took all the credit

Alumnae Chair: Not too bad. We had very few alums, and I knew them all, so instead of sending a newsletter I just kept in touch via email and snail mail and let them know what was going on with the chapter... read: low time commitment and something I'd have done anyway ;)

House Chair: This is a real easy job when you're in an unhoused sorority. :D Panhel had a room in the student center, where the unhoused sororities could keep things (rush decorations etc.), so once a semester we had a "room clean-up day" and it was my job to make sure AEPhi sent a couple of people (read: I went) - but that was pretty much it.

I also appointed myself webmaster. I just sat down one summer and wrote a website. Now website maintenance is part of the PR chair's job.

In terms of rush, I was the bid day chair one year, and a rho chi another year... so I was never quite a "rush ass" but I came close :p

In Panhellenic:

Secretary for the year of 2004.

In Phi Sig:

I started off as Philanthropy Chair and Public Relations Chair for the 2003-2004 school year.

One month into the school year our bursar (treasurer) dropped the position and I was elected.

So I had to drop one Chair position, I dropped Public Relations.

Next school year 2004-2005, I want to be Membership Recruitment :) and Historian.

My first year as a sister, I was elected to being both Corresponding AND Recording Secretary! It was overkill. Both jobs are pretty intensive and having to do both my first year as a sister was nuts!

Vice President, Membership: my current position. This is my second year with this office, and I LOVE IT. I am in charge of rush and I lead the MIT(pledge) meetings. I love being in charge of the new girlies and teaching them about our sisterhood.

As far as chairs, I've been:

--Fundraising chair: I didn't like that chair very much, because I suck at coming up with good fundraisers. :p

--Social chair: this one was pretty fun!

I will be running for Prez for next year. I'm crossing my fingers. :D

Freshman Year:
Guard
Alumni & Senior Coordinator

Sophomore Year:
Treasurer
Alumni & Senior Coordinator

Junior Year:
Vice President of Recruitment
(oversaw pr, homecoming, spirit, panhel rep, & formal recruiment chair, but ended up BEING the recruitment chair since she dropped the position a WEEK before!)

Senior Year (currently):
Assistant New Member Educator
(CAN'T wait for the girls to come in this FALL!)
Homecoming Chair

By far my favorite position has been Alumni & Senior Coordinator(absolutely REWARDING experience)... but i can't say for certain JUST yet ;)

* Spirit Chair (I absolutely loved this position, because it was great teaching the chapter new cheers and helping to keep the spirits up when all we wanted to do was go to bed during long recruitment workshops! :D)

* Music Chair (I shared this position with another new member, and we never really *left* the position until our graduation...I enjoyed the position, but in a chapter where not very many of us were musically inclined ;), it was difficult to get anyone excited about singing :( )

* Membership Education Vice President, or MEVP (I wish I never had had to give this position up! I enjoyed working with the NMC, the Pride leaders - which we reinstituted for the semester that I turned over the reins, the Guard, and my entire Exec Committee. TMEs weren't the best things to organize and get going, but I didn't have much say in any of the TMEs that were planned for my term ~ I split the position with another sister while I was studying overseas)

*Recording Secretary (I enjoyed giving back to the chapter in my last semester as a sister - I actually thought I was going to be there another semester, but I graduated earlier than I expected - and I was proud that I set up a chapter e-mail address which made it easier to email chapter minutes out to ALL the sisters and our Province Director, District Director and all our advisors, which was a goal of mine)

* Historian (I held this position at the same time as Recording Secretary, and I didn't really get a chance to do much with it - the previous historian was finishing up her work on the scrapbook and wanted to finish it before she turned it over to me, and then I graduated, so I didn't really get to complete too much with this position, but I had ideas, I tell you! :D)

I'm still planning to remain involved as an alumna, and am currently working on holding offices in other capacities (with my alumnae association here and helping out a local collegiate chapter). I couldn't be happier! :)

ztashelli 03-28-2004 02:35 PM

*Panhellenic Delegate-This was a fun position....not a lot of work though. All I had to do is attend Panhellenic meetings and report back to the chapter, but it was a good way to get my foot in the door on Exec.
*Treasurer-Only the strong can be treasurer!! Not a fun job, but someone had to do it and I was willing to step up. Monthly reports were a pain and having to financially expell some of my sisters broke my heart.
*President-Currently, I am holding this position. I am almost through my first semester. It is really hard sometimes....but extremely rewarding at others. I will let ya'll know my final verdict on this one in 9 months!
*Next year----I haven't decided yet! I mulling Panhellenic President since it will be our turn, or either 2nd VP.

Last semester I was:

- Academic Chair - I was nominated again for this semester, but there's a reason why I declined. It's hard trying to think of fun things to do that sisters want to go to/ have time to go to.

- Co-Rush Chair - This was a lot of fun. I got to help plan the rush events, but I wasn't the one specifically in charge, so I did get to relax somewhat. And it's always fun cooking pledge dinner! I would do it again.

This semester I am/ was:
- Morale Chair - LOVE planning events. We're going to have a kindergarten night soon with finger paints. Best position EVER.

- Co-Pledge Chair for the winter pledge class - There were only two things that went badly:
1. The other co-pledge didn't do anything and then deactivated the day after I-night.
2. I forgot to bring something. I bought it, but forgot it! So then we had to do a bit of improvisation, but it was okay.
Other than that, I loved every bit of it.

Next semester, I reeeeeeeally reeeeally want to be Secretary or Pledge Chair. Or both.

Collegiate Positions:
I was Marshall, served two years as our Greek Columns delegate (the Greek Community newsletter that I'm not even sure is still put together).
Then I was Purchase Fund Chair, which basically meant that I was in charge of making sure everyone paid for different things that were being order like T-shirts, Bid Day pics, party favors, somehow when I started this my two best friends were also Greek Week Co-chairs and so they also had me in charge of the penny drive that goes on for the chapter.
I was Homecoming Chair twice and I loved it both times, I love Homecoming so much. It was cool because there are two different ways that pairings can do Homecoming - either doing community service only or by doing a lawn display. The first year we only did the community service and the second year we did a lawn display. There's still lots of other projects to do and by learning so much the first year about what needed to be done, I was referred to as the Homecoming Nazi (jokingly) my second tme around, but we won so that was cool.
Vice President Adminstration - basically involves lots of paperwork, making sure everyone is meeting deadlines, was cool b/c I got to fill in for the President when she couldn't go to our Grand Convention, and I got to organize our slating process and Chapter Leadership Workshop.
Facility Manager - pretty self explanatory
Awards Chair which meant I had to assemble our binder for the Vespers ceremony, I helped with it one year and was in charge of it the next

Committees:
Finance Committee twice, Corp Board (when I was Facility mgr). I was also a Party Day Chair (2nd round and pref) during Formal Recruitment, served on a Spirit Committee, as well as our Member Development Committee and served as the PR Chair for our Philanthropy project my last semester

Adviser positions:
Currently I advise four different positions: Vice-President Development, Social, Ritualist and Service chair.
