What schools need expansion?

I would like to start a list of schools that we (the Greekchat community) feel need expansion... big systems or small.... what campuses are in need of a new sorority or frat?

Why are you looking to start such a list?

GeekyPenguin 12-11-2003 06:27 PM

I would love to see another NPC sorority at Wisconsin - Platteville.

squirrely girl 12-11-2003 07:37 PM

I would LOVE to see another chapter at Austin Peay State University in Tennessee!!!!!!

Boston U used to have a fantastic Greek system.

I'd like to see their closed chapters re-colonized. That would include (womens' groups) Pi Phi, ZTA, Theta Phi Alpha, AGD, KKG, and ASA.

:::sigh::: It's nice to be an alum.

hehehe, i always think that too, but i am not sure how they would react to...well, then you aren't getting MY $25!!! lol

astroAPhi 12-11-2003 09:55 PM

I think we really need to expand here at Florida Tech. Right now we have 2 NPC sororities, and one local. It's my opinion that if the local had a national backing, they'd be much stronger. The problem is not with the girls in the sorority themselves, but it's more the people on campus who don't "get it". I really hope we open for expansion in this next year (we're trying) and the girls get to associate with a national!

AlphaSigOU 12-11-2003 10:08 PM

We desperately need some Alpha Sigma Phi expansion in Texas!

amycat412 12-11-2003 10:20 PM

Southern Cal. Needs it deperately.

Zetagymnast 12-11-2003 10:23 PM

I think that my sorority needs to expand to other schools but I don't know how.

I have no reason, other than the fact that we have many threads about this subject but no list of the schools. I have no control over where my glo goes, so this isn't about that. We are always talking about Greek Life Shrinking but never really about Greek Life Growing.... so I thought that this would be an interesting topic.

I think that my school has a strong greek life but we don't need a fifth sorority.

Since we don't all know what the letters stand for, could you please spell it out. Also give a list of what groups are there now would be great!

Having grown up in Clarksville, TN, I would have to disagree with the idea of expansion there.

I am assuming that there is now an AGD in addition to the XO and ADPi chapters there. Is this assumption correct Squirrely Girl?

I know that KD had a colony/chapter there in years past and had to close b/c of numbers.

Perhaps I am wrong, but unless the numbers show otherwise, I would not see expansion as a good idea as of now.

Sigma Pi is trying to recolonize at SC, since we are the newst chapter here at U of A and have 5 or so houses waiting for expansion im glad we're growing as a system here in Arizona. Whether we are bring back chapters, or complete new chapters, our school only has a 10% greek population and i hope with the growth of the greek system we can begin to involve a greater population of students. I would say that all of us who are GLo love our organization, and i hope with expansion others may experience what we have and will.

Tom Earp 12-12-2003 12:28 AM

Why not start a thread like this???

Pittsburg State U. Ks. 3 Soros., 6 Fraternities:(

There is nothing wrong with growth except running the smaller ones out and off campus!

SLUadpi 12-12-2003 12:54 AM

I would love to see a couple more sororities come to slu. we have 5 right now: adpi, sig kap, dg, kd, and gphib. average chapter size is around 130-150, which is pretty decent size, i would say we could use another chapter.

Boston U

Currently there is
TriDelta (Alpha chapter)
Sigma Kappa (Delta - thanx SoCalGirl!)
Alpha Phi (Eta deuteron)
Gamma Phi Beta (Delta)
Delta Gamma (Zeta Zeta)
ADPi (Rho)
AEPhi (someone help me out here?)
Sigma Delta Tau (Alpha Xi)

A *lot* of early NPC history here. IMHO, the school should be waving their contribution to Greek life around like a banner.
Hey, one can dream........

ETA--a quick review of BU's Go Greek website showed I missed a couple. AKA and aKDPhi are also colonized under the Multicultural Greek Council.
ETA - crap, I forgot Tau Beta Sigma!! (The biggest partiers of all Greeks when I was an undergrad.)

ASA is there too. We colonized sometime in the late 90's.

WPI

WPI - Worcestor Polytech Institute in Mass.

they have 2 NPC Chapters

Alpha Gamma Delta
Phi Sigma Sigma

I think this school would benefit from having a third chapter that could help balance them out. they seem to work more against each other than for each other. i've talked to quite a few students and alums from there and they feel the same way. they originally had a third chapter there, dphie, but i'm not exactly sure why they closed.

BEACH_LCZ_617 12-12-2003 12:13 PM

Pittsburg State University needs new sororities!!!!!!! There is only three now!!!

That1LoudChick 12-12-2003 03:17 PM

Kent State University has only 7 NPC and 3 NPHC sororites! That's compared to the 16 IFC and 3 BLGG fraternities. However, the IFC chapters are generally smaller (average 30-35 brothers per) so it it does sort of make sense because most of the NPC chapters have 50-60 sisters. Still! I'd like to see Tri-Delta or Theta Phi Alpha up here!

Txsurfinwaves 12-12-2003 03:34 PM

I would love to see a new sorority at the University of North Texas...just because a vote was brought before Panhellenic earlier this year about raising the quota of total members in each sorority. I also know, that in addition to our greek row, we have a space marked off for a 6th house( since Chi Omega will have a lodge elsewhere, maybe they have idea of expansion?) maybe texas*princess can help me out on this one. I think Delta Zeta closed in 2000( i believe, correct me if im wrong, i know they were there until at least 1999)...and KD was there at one point as well.

I dont think any fraternities will be expanding here soon, just because we have had several IFC fraternities kicked off in recent years,(and SAE about a month ago), and Alpha Tau Omega just got their charter.

amycat412 12-12-2003 03:34 PM

USC- Southern Cal, has 9 NPC sororities.
Alpha Phi
Alpha Delta Pi
Delta Gamma
Delta Delta Delta
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Gamma Phi Beta
Alpha Chi Omega
Kappa Alpha Theta
Pi Beta Phi

shadokat 12-12-2003 03:42 PM

DPhiE had a chapter at North Texas as well in the 70s.

SiempreCansada 12-12-2003 04:16 PM

Expansion

I think that UMKC (Univ of Missouri-Kansas City) needs to expand to include MCGLO's & LGLO's. Currently at the school there's:

Fraternities:
Alpha Phi Alpha
Beta Theta Pi
Kappa Alpha Psi
Lambda Chi Alpha
Sigma Phi Epsilon

Sororities:
Alpha Delta Pi
Alpha Kappa Alpha
Beta Sigma Phi
Delta Zeta
Delta Rho (local)
Delta Sigma Theta
Chi Omega

AUDeltaGam 12-12-2003 04:17 PM

I think Auburn could use another sorority and I would love to see Kappa Alpha Theta come back!

ADPiAkron 12-12-2003 04:23 PM

The University of Akron (Ohio) only has 5 NPC sororities. Not all of them are at total...but if a new sorority would not hurt or close an old one....I would love to see one there!

alpha delta pi
alpha gamma delta
alpha phi
delta gamma
kappa kappa gamma

ZTAngel 12-12-2003 05:07 PM

University of Central Florida needs a new sorority. We have 10 chapters right now (ADPi, AZD, XO, DDD, DG, Theta, KD, KKG, PiPhi, ZTA). In the past 5 years, quota has ranged from 65 to 71. Total at UCF is 120 (I think) and some groups are at 170-190 members!

PhiRhoSister 12-12-2003 06:13 PM

On campuses that need to expand, please consider passing on the name Phi Sigma Rho Sorority!!

Engineering-focused campuses such as WPI and Florida Tech would be ideal for Phi Sigma Rho. However, Phi Sigma Rho has also been very successful at large universities with engineering programs, such as Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State, Purdue, etc!

Although our initial membership is generally from engineering majors and some call us an engineering/technical sorority, Phi Sigma Rho is actually a purely social sorority and we do not allow duel membership with NPC or other social sororities. Since we niche market, we are successful in bringing more women into the Greek system who sometimes would not consider joining a social sorority due to the workload of their engineering majors.

Phi Sigma Rho helps to bring diversity and new leaders into the Greek system without impairing the recruitment efforts of existing sororities on a campus – a win, win situation for campuses that are hesitant in bring on a new national sorority!

Phi Sigma Rho's national web site is at: www.phisigmarho.org

astroAPhi 12-12-2003 06:31 PM

I don't know if Phi Sigma Rho would work at Florida Tech right now. Most of the girls in the local that's looking to associate with a national are Biology majors, which isn't really engineering or engineering technology. If Phi Sigma Rho allows non-engineering majors, then it might work.

Our Office of Greek Life and Panhellenic Council established that if a new group comes, the girls to help colonize will be the ones who are already members of the local, but the national organization can come down and interview more from there. They're submitted a request for expansion to NPC, but I know the girls have been looking into multi-cultural organizations as well. We want a new sorority, but we don't want to just kick the girls in the local to the side.

Sister Havana 12-12-2003 08:15 PM

Indiana University could use a new sorority or two. There are 19 NPC sororities now. I know, it sounds like a lot...but the fact is, about 1,600 women go through recruitment every year and only about 900 women get a bid. The chapters are all above 100 members. There's definitely the demand for it...unfortunately it's near-impossible for a sorority to expand there, even though there are new fraternities popping up every year.

As for which sororities: I would have liked to see Phi Sigma Sigma there when I was there. Alpha Sigma Alpha, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Sigma Kappa were all there when I was there but have closed down since. I know there was a recolonization effort for Tri-Sigma last year but I don't know what happened with it.

I said basically the same thing when asked to give to my school's alumnae fund: when the Greeks are given a fair shake in their quarterly Brag-O-Zine, I'll think about it!

Just wanted to let you know that when a local joins Phi Sigma Rho all the active and alumnae members are invited to join! If you would like more information, please feel free to PM me. :)

~There have been rumors that Chi Omega, Phi Mu, or Theta Phi Alpha might be coming back on campus.....but it seems to still be a long way off. Phi Mu is bringing back their Alumnae group currently. I think that it is time though that Akron does expand to 6 sororities especially since there will be 12 fraternities here soon.

Ahh I misread the post, I read it three times and it looked as if she was hoping that an older one would close. I apologize.
