***Quote that sums up who you are***

Quote:

"Friends can help each other. A true friend is someone who lets you have total freedom to be yourself? and especially to feel. Or not feel. Whatever you happen to be feeling at the moment is fine with them. That's what real love amounts to? letting a person be what he really is....Most people love you for who you pretend to be....To keep their love, you keep pretending? performing. You get to love your pretense....It's true, we're locked in an image, an act? and the sad thing is, people get so used to their image? they grow attached to their masks. They love their chains. They forget all about who they really are. And if you try to remind them, they hate you for it? they feel like you're trying to steal their most precious possession."

"Some people measure their lives in pulse rates and sit-ups. Far better to measure yours in licks of ice cream, well-told jokes, mad dashes to be first in the water, belly laughs. And, when you die, it won't be an erratic shift in your heart rate, it will be an overdose of mirth, fun poisoning, death by laughter."
-ad for Keds

"I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope and that enables you to laugh at life's realities. "
-Dr. Seuss

"Always behave like a duck - keep calm and unruffled on the surface but paddle like the devil underneath."

"All your life you are told the things you cannot do.. all your life they will say you're not good enough.. or strong enough.. or talented enough.. they'll say you're the wrong height.. or the wrong type.. to play this.. or be this.. or achieve this.. they will tell you no a thousand times.. no until every no just becomes meaningless.. all your life they will tell you no.. quite firmly and very quickly.. they will tell you no.. and you will tell them yes."

"Persistence. Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genuis will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race."
-Calvin Coolidge
President of the United States 1924-29
Member of the Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta, Amherst College Class of 1894

Also, Rudyard Kipling's "IF"
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

I am still determined to be cheerful and happy, in whatever situation I may be; for I have also learned from experience that the greater part of our happiness or misery depends upon our dispositions, and not upon our circumstances.

That's almost identical to what Paul says in the book of Philippians (which I love so much and willingly cosign!).

"He who is not busy being born is busy dying" Bob Dylan

"Rejoice in the Lord always, and Again, I say, Rejoice!" Philippians 4:4

and many more that I can't think of right now...

Ok, this was my fav poem as a senior in high school. I re-read it today and it made a lot of sense to me.

Comes the Dawn

After a while you learn the subtle difference
Between holding a hand and chaining a soul.
ANd you learn that love doesn't mean security,
And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts
ANd presents aren' t promises.
And you begin to accept your defeats
With your head up and your eyes open.
With the grace of maturity not the grief of a child.
And you learn to build all your roads on Today
Because tomorrow's ground
Is too uncertain for plans, and futures have
A way of falling, down in mid-flight.
After a while you learn that even sunshine
Burns if you get too much.
So you plant your own garden and decorate
Your own soul, instead of waiting
For someone to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure...
That you really are strong,
And you really do have worth.
And you learn and learn and learn....
With every goodbye you learn.

Okay, but my big quote right is:
"...after all this kind of fanfare, and even more, I came to a point where I needed solitude and just stop the machine of 'thinking' and 'enjoying' what they call 'living', I just wanted to lie in the grass and look at the clouds..." ~ Jack Kerouac

*A best friend is like a four leaf clover hard to find and lucky to have*
And one of my favorite quotes, that I wrote on the back of my bit bro's paddle:

*When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares.*

I also like that one .. can't remember the author or the whole text, but it's about everything being 90% attitude.

I don't know if this poem sums me up, but this is what I try very hard to live by:

The Desiderata, by Max Ehrmann

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble, it's a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery.

But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.

Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be.

And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

DeltaSigStan 04-06-2004 02:22 PM

“I have to make the life that I do live as happy as I can and try to be the best with what I have…live the best life that I can live be as happy as I can be… nothing is perfect for anybody. I don’t think. I feel for the trap. You know they say made your bed and lay in it? I tried to move I can’t move to no other bed. I found I can’t live a different lifestyle, this is the life they gave me, this is the life that I made. I felt that I can’t change…not for nobody. This is it.” – Tupac Shakur

GMUBunny 04-06-2004 03:40 PM

My philosophies about life and the world in general:

You know the world is going crazy when the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, the tallest guy in the NBA is Chinese, the Swiss hold the America's Cup. France is accusing the U.S. of arrogance, Germany doesn't want to go to war, and the three most powerful men in America are named 'Bush', 'Dick', and 'Colon.' Need I say more? -anon. I heard that one last year some time and it always made me chuckle...

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. -1 Corinthians 13:13 (Also the Zeta Tau Alpha Battlecry)

It's hard to believe a man is telling you the truth when you know you would lie if you were in his place. -anon

And the quotes that I feel describe me:

Never choose to make someone your priority when they only choose to make you their option. -anon

Well behaved women rarely make history- anon

and one of my favorites:

I once had a rose named after me and I was very flattered. But I was not pleased to read the description in the catalogue: 'no good in a bed, but fine up against a wall.' -Eleanor Roosevelt :p
