En Vogue Is Back With New Member, New Single
Mon Dec 1,10:00 AM ET

LAUNCH Radio Networks

The original funky divas, En Vogue, are back. Now featuring original members Cindy Herron and Terry Ellis (news) along with newly added singer Rhona Bennett, En Vogue is set to release a new CD, titled Soulflower, on February 24, 2004. In the meantime, the lead single from the set, "Losin' My Mind," was just made available on November 17 and is currently one of the most added tracks at urban AC radio.

The first new set since the group's poorly received Masterpiece Theater in 2003, Soulflower again unites the girls with the team of Denzil Foster & Thomas McElroy, the producers who first created the group as a quartet in 1989. Foster/McElroy also gave the ladies their biggest hits, including "Hold On (To Your Love)," "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)," and "Free Your Mind."

New member Bennett, who was featured on the short-lived the Jamie Foxx (news) Show, is showcased on "Losin' My Mind," which also features some vintage Babes In Toyland-style brass fanfare loops.

Soulflower also features En Vogue's version of Guy's 1988 ballad "A Piece Of My Love."

Ummmmmmmm, I sorry. I need Dawn! I guess they can get Max back, too. Without them, I can't support. A Piece of My Love...dunno about that either.

Diddy's Diva Demands
The mogul throws a fit at the VH1 awards. Plus, a PR blackout for Paris

by Kat Giantis
MSN Entertainment
November 26, 2003

With all of P. Diddy's wealth and fame, you'd think he wouldn't need validation from a basic cable outlet. But according to the New York Post, that's exactly what he demanded from VH1 at the "Big in '03" awards last week. The paper claims the multi-hyphenate went ballistic backstage at the ceremony when he learned that he was only tapped to present neo-Rat Pack pal Ashton Kutcher with the "Big Stylin' '03" prize, not to collect an honor of
his very own.

"I am not going on stage unless I get an award!" the Post quotes him as saying. The suits at VH1 allegedly appeased the mogul by asking him what award he wanted. "I want to be the Big Maverick -- give me the Big Maverick '03 award," Diddy declared.

"It was a real pain," an insider tells the paper. "Eve was supposed to simply introduce Puffy, who would then give Ashton his award, but the script had to be reworked so that Eve could present Puffy with the award."

Diddy's rep insists his client knew all along he was only a presenter, although the flack had no explanation as to why he ended up receiving a prize. Diddy apparently likes the "maverick" label. Last week, he took home the "Style Maverick" honor at the Vibe Awards. "Big in '03" airs Sunday at 9 p.m.

Because you didn't get an award and you were only there to present an award to Ashton "Male Jailbait" Kutcher? Sean Combs, you can do better. Lawdhamercy...

Beyonce News....

SANTA MONICA, California — Dangerously in Love 2 is already taken — it's a song on Dangerously in Love — so something like Still Dangerous might have to do.

You see, Beyoncé hopes to release a sequel of sorts to her debut solo album in March.

"I recorded about 45 songs for Dangerously in Love," the singer said at the recent Vibe Awards (see "50 Cent Wins Big — And Shows Up — At Vibe Awards". "I love so many songs, and they are just kind of going to waste sitting there."

Beyoncé included one of the songs, a collaboration she recorded with P. Diddy (and later Ghostface Killah) called "Summertime," on "The Fighting Temptations" soundtrack and found fans and radio programmers eager for more.

The album is still in the planning stages, but one of the producers from Beyoncé's first album is sure one of his leftover tracks will be included, possibly even as a single.

"It's called 'Scent of You' and it's a ballad, but it's a rock ballad, a little leaning on metal," said Bryce Wilson, who has also worked with Toni Braxton. "It's definitely something that nobody's ever heard from her."

In the meantime, Beyoncé is still promoting her first album. She shot a video last week for "Me, Myself and I," the follow-up to the hit "Baby Boy."

"The song is really powerful," she said. "It talks about women basically listening to their inner voice and knowing that they will never disappoint themselves. And basically the video reflects that."

Details of the concept are being kept under wraps, but Johan Renck (Kylie Minogue, Chris Cornell) directed. "He's from Europe, and I love his whole approach," Beyoncé said.

As for Destiny's Child, the singer said her group plans to reunite in the studio early next year (see "Destiny's Child Promise Two Albums In 2004"). Plus she hopes to make another movie soon. "There's not anything in stone yet, but I am looking," she said.

411 for the week of December 1, 2003

Singer Peabo Bryson is not looking forward to this weekend. The popular crooner owes the IRS $1.2 million in back taxes and they are planning to auction off many of his belongings. Over the summer The IRS raided his Atlanta home and the auction is taking place this weekend. Some of the items being auctioned off include everything from designer clothes, a grand piano, dishware and Grammy Awards. Peabo has two Grammy Awards. His first one was his 1992 duet with Celine Dion, "Beauty and the Beast," and his 1993 duet with Regina Belle, "A Whole New World." The 52-year-old singer is currently touring the country with "The Colors of Christmas" production.

The Vanguard Media Group has filed for bankruptcy and they are shutting down the operations of Honey Magazine, Heart and Soul Magazine and Savoy Magazine. In a shocking move, CEO Keith Clinksdale announced that the company has run out of money and they are going out of business. Keith used to be the head of Vibe Magazine. I loved Honey and Heart and Soul Magazine. These magazines were very informative and they had great features and articles. The current editions on newsstands now are the last that will be published.

Prince may be headed to the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame but this has not stopped his weird behavior. Prince decided to venture out one night to a New York nightclub and it took his handlers 20 minutes to coax him out his stretch limo. Once Prince got inside he decided to sit in a booth by himself and stare at the ceiling for an hour.

Kenny Lattimore and Chante Moore are going to be on The Young and The Restless. The married couple will be performing on the show December 23rd, at Neil and Drucilla's wedding.

Look for CBS News to announce the arrival of their new news correspondent, Ed Gordon. Ed used to work for BET News and now he will be filing reports for 60 Minutes Two.

What is wrong with Prince, is he crazy?? You want to go to a club, but when you get there it takes handlers 20 minutes for them to get you out of the car then you go into the club and stare at the ceiling for an hour. http://www.gamers-forums.com/smilies...Niro/idiot.gif See, that is why he sat in the booth by his crazy azz self.

I love me some Ed Gordan. Sorors, remember when he was at leadership during the EAF lunch. Lawd have mercy, that is a fine young man right there. So I know what to add to my list of television shows. That's a fine young man!!!http://mysmilies.creativesell.net/contrib/fk/kissy.gif

They should have dragged his behind by those six inch heels wears and left his butt on the curb. But he pays their bills so oh well. Prince does stuff like that because he knows it's gonna get attention. When we ignore him, he will act like he was raised.

OOH this is sooo funny!! I'm laughing out of my chair on Prince. We all know that Prince loves this kind of attention. Back in the day he told Dick Clark of "American Bandstand" that he has to get his bodyguard's permission before he could ask him (Prince) a question. Do you all remember when he had that bodyguard that looked like Santa Claus? Hell no wonder Vanity aka Denise Matthews left him alone. Also is Whitney's Christmas album really all that...............on the downlow though........I've been trying to listen to it on the big KZ! Forgive me if it has already been posted but I heard on the radio that Mary J. got married recently.

B2K, P. Diddy, Jay-Z ... it seems everyone in the music industry has love for R. Kelly. But there is one artist who isn't smitten with him: the fashion-trendsetting, lyrical lethal Pink Panther of rap, Cam'ron.

The leader of the Diplomats is heated because he says he was there for the R. when his sex scandal first broke, and now Kells is reneging on an agreement they had for the singer to appear on Cam's upcoming Purple Haze LP.

"Me, I got beef with R. Kelly," said Cam, who recorded the "Snake" remix with R. Kelly and made an unauthorized remix of Kelly's "Thoia Thoing" this year. "The 'Snake' song, he asked me to fly to L.A. and do the video, I said fine, all in exchange for him to do a beat and hook on my album. There's no beat from Kelly, there's no hook from R. Kelly."

Cam said he realizes that Kelly is busy, but was insulted because the R. has made time for people who only just recently got in his corner.

"The whole industry was sh---in' on you," the rapper further vented. "Now everybody is back on the bandwagon, I'm jumping off. I still love his music, he's a great musician, but I can't do business with that man, 'cause that's bad business. I could have invoiced you and said, 'This is my fee.' That's what I'm gonna do [now]."

Cam does have his sights set on another crooner who's been known to get the ladies screaming — Maxwell. He wants the singer to help him remake Earth, Wind & Fire's "Reasons."

"I always loved the song when I was growing up," he explained. "I been wanting somebody to do [the beat for me] for a minute."

If neither Kelly nor Maxwell work out, Cam can rest assured that he does have at least one singer definitely on his LP. Dip Set wild man Freaky Zeeky guest stars on "Hey Lady," which samples Roger Troutman's "Computer Love."

"I see the hate in your eye, damn, them boys is too fly," Zeeky sings off-key. "The way we roll up, rims all swole up, ice all froze up, sing!" "Hey Lady" is one of a slew of records that Cam's put on the mixtapes and leaked to some radio stations the past few months, along with "Get Em Girls," "Killa Cam," "Dead Mother----ers," "Diamond and Pearls" (yes, it's Cam's own take on the Prince classic replete with the sample of the purple people eater), and "The Halftime Show," where he raps over the beat to ESPN's "SportsCenter" theme. "I did that song in 15 minutes," he said. "I did it and put it out [immediately]. On the record, I relate a lot of stuff going on in my life to sports."

Killa's LP doesn't drop till around mid-February, and he says he'll be working on material until the very last minute. He just put out another new record that his camp says may be the strongest contender for a single, "Shake." On the cut, Cam'ron encourages women to "shake something" and raps about spending time in the Bahamas with Alyssa Milano.

Cam is looking to shoot his first video in support of Purple Haze within the next few weeks.

Along that line, I HEARD that Mary Js hubby/fiancee/SO has 3 kids and previously been married. I HEARD that they have been waiting for his divorce to become finalized before they got married. AND, that she has cut ties with her sister, etc. SUPPOSEDLY, Mary J has removed all from her camp and has hired "new" personnel since she has been with this guy. SUPPOSEDLY, Mary's sister see him as the "devil". DRAMA!

ALSO, I HEARD from some Houston peeps that KELLY is disappointed with her management and is looking for new representation. SUPPOSEDLY, peeps don't want this to get out because it will make all the accusations from LaToya, LaTavia, and the other chick more legit and could POSSIBLY affect Beyonce's career. (it's about time Kelly wakes us) Also, I HEARD at a recent awards show, Kelly was told not to attend because it was "B's" night. Kelly attended the show anyway. THEN, it was said that Michelle didn't want to do the Gospel thing, but it was suggested that she do so.

(this is hearsay from someone who knows someone who sings backup for Kelly..we'll see what develops) :o

Supreme Court Allows Rosa Parks to Sue Rap Duo

By James Vicini

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court (news - web sites) cleared the way on Monday for civil rights icon Rosa Parks to proceed with her lawsuit against OutKast and others over the rap music duo's hit song with her name as its title.

• Parks v. LaFace Records, et al. (FindLaw)

The justices let stand a U.S. appeals court ruling that reinstated Parks' false advertising and publicity claims against OutKast and three Bertelsmann AG (news - web sites) units -- LaFace Records, the record producer, and Arista Records and BMG Entertainment, the distributors.

Parks made history in 1955 when she refused to give up her seat to a white man and move to the back of a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama.

Her arrest, which became a defining moment in the civil rights movement, led to a 381-day boycott of the bus system by blacks. It resulted in the end of segregation on public transportation and became a catalyst for organized boycotts, sit-ins and demonstrations across the South.

The song, "Rosa Parks," released as part of the 1998 album "Aquemini," was nominated for a Grammy award. The lyrics do not mention her by name, but the chorus says, "Ah, ha, hush that fuss. Everybody move to the back of the bus."

The album by rap recording artists Andre Benjamin and Antwan Patton has sold more than two million copies and the song enjoyed long-lasting success on the Billboard charts.

Parks, a Detroit resident, sued in 1999, claiming use of her name without permission constituted false advertising and infringed on her right to publicity. She also claimed it defamed her character and interfered with a business relationship.

She had approved a collection of gospel recordings by various artists, released in 1995 and entitled "A Tribute to Mrs. Rosa Parks."

A federal judge dismissed the lawsuit in 1999, ruling constitutional free-speech rights under the First Amendment covered the use of Parks' name.

The appeals court upheld the dismissal of the claims of defamation and interference with a business relationship, but reinstated the rest of the lawsuit.

It said the defendants needed to show some artistic reason for calling the song "Rosa Parks." The appeals court sent the case back for more hearings to determine whether use of her name was symbolic, as the defendants argued, or disguised commercial advertisement.

Attorneys for OutKast and the other defendants appealed to the Supreme Court, asking the justices to hear the case. They said the appeals court unconstitutionally allowed public figures to use trademark and right-of-publicity laws to censor speech.

But the high court rejected the appeal without comment

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court (news - web sites) cleared the way on Monday for civil rights icon Rosa Parks to proceed with her lawsuit against OutKast and others over the rap music duo's hit song with her name as its title.

I wonder if she will take legal action against Ice Cube or Cedric for the comments made in Barber Shop?

I'd defer to the lawyers in the GC fam but remembering back to my J-school education days, I would think that Rosa Parks was a public figure, or at least a limited public figure, and as such was probably fair game for use for such purposes.

...haven't heard the song so don't know what they did, but I think Cedric, et. al., would be ok.

I think she's upset b/c there was some profanity in the song. And the reference to "back of the bus" automatically refers to her. (and the song is called 'Rosa Parks').
I think the whole thing is silly, but I"m not Ms. Parks. I'd be more concerned if the group was being violent or mysoginistic with my name in the title. I"m still trying to understand how it defamed her character..

Clinton, of Tallahassee, was arrested Saturday and bonded out of jail over the weekend, according to jail officials, who wouldn't release any other information. Clinton's lawyer, Shoshana Zisk of San Francisco, didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.

Clinton, 63, who headed the funk bands Parliament and Funkadelic — and the collaboration later known as P-Funk — in the 1970s and 1980s is considered a father of the genre. In 1983, Clinton's solo record "Atomic Dog," hit number one on the R&B charts.

Tallahassee Police said an officer noticed a man sitting by himself in the passenger seat of a car in a gas station parking lot about 2 a.m. Saturday and approached to talk to him.

When the officer got to the car, the man, later determined to be Clinton, tried to hide an item he was holding, dropping it between the seats, said Tallahassee Police spokesman Stewart Clendinen.

Clinton started to reach into his pocket and the officer asked him if he had anything in his pocket that might be dangerous, Clendinen said.

Clinton allegedly responded "I've got a little cocaine."

The item he is accused of dropping between the seats turned out be a crack pipe, police said.

Clinton was charged with one felony count of cocaine possession and a misdemeanor count of possession of the pipe, the Tallahassee Democrat first reported for Tuesday papers.

A call to George Clinton Enterprises for comment Monday went unanswered and Clinton's home number is unlisted.
