Annoying GDI Husband

AAAAAAGH! Can I vent, please????

I just spent a looooooong time over at the Delta Zeta forum inputting the names and founding dates of every single DZ chapter that has ever existed. I was feeling very pleased with myself when I noticed my GDI husband peering over my shoulder and laughing.

"What's so funny?", said I.
"Nothing."
"You're looking at my list and laughing. What's wrong?"
"Nothing, nevermind"

Finally he points to one of the chapters noted as being "recolonized" and erupts in laughter once again. "I can just see it now," he said. "Intrepid 18 year olds armed only with the designer clothes on their backs undertaking the grueling recolonizing process..."

Than I smacked him and swore he will get none until he apologizes.

Smart a$$ GDI!

That's funny stuff. You should give him some just for being a funny guy.

KillarneyRose 11-28-2003 05:19 PM

Well, I told him that at least I didn't put on a sailor costume in college and march around a parade field toting a pretend rifle.

Designer clothes, indeed! I wish!

Tom Earp 11-28-2003 06:24 PM

Hey, my chapter recolonized and I didn't get to wear designer clothes while we wrestled (or, if you're from around here, rastled) with the grueling task... :p No fair!

Gotta give the guy props for creative thinking!

When I told my GDI fiance that the whole pillow fight scene wasn't on, he sulked a little and said something to the effect of, "Must you ruin the few nice dreams I have about sororities?"

But I swear, if he says ADPhi one more time, he's a dead man!!

Don't go there!! I think you'll find most ADPi's a little touchy about ADPhi...

Mr. honeychile went to school at an ultra-Christian university that didn't have GLOs, and he just doesn't get it. He's trying (I think), but he just doesn't.

Why are ADPs touchy over ADF? ADF is older.

Tom, let me take this opportunity to say you are my hero and that if I meet a guy like you down here I am bringing him home to mama.

GtownGirl98 11-30-2003 05:37 PM

My GDI....

Well I am glad that someone started this because I have a GDI boyfriend that just doesn't get it.

He went to a very big school with a very large greeklife... but he is very anti-greek.

He doesn't understand any of my alumnae involvement because he only heard about the rough times during my sorority house experience. He doesn't remember that without my sorority sister inviting me to a house party of one of her hs friends that we wouldn't have met.

He calls this "Greek Sh*t". He is very trying sometimes.

LOL, actually he detested it! He's always maintained that the Naval Academy is a good place to have gone, but a terrible place to actually be. Guess the price was right, though. He only had to pay off MY student loans! :D

It was founded as a literary society, not a secret society, in 1832 - 19 years prior to the Adelphean Society, which was founded as a secret society for college women. When other sororities were trying to "poach" Adelpheans into their GLOs, the Adelpheans decided to change their name to Alpha Delta Phi instead (1904). Being of Southern origin, they didn't even hear of the fraternity until 1912, and changed yet again to Alpha Delta Pi in 1913 to accomadate them. Alpha Delta Phi never extended further South than UVA, and has 24 chapters, while Alpha Delta Pi has chapters across the US and Canada and has over 130 active chapters.

It's a petty thing, I know, but that's the feeling.

KR - has your husband ever known anyone at the Academy named McKeever? My mama has several generations of cousins who went to Annapolis. The highest rank was Commander (? Is that the one right under Admiral?) Elmer McKeever, who died in the last five years.

Actually, there are chapters further south in latitude than Virginia, if we're going to be picky...and including the Alpha Delta Phi Society, which uses an identical ritual to the Fraternity, there are 30 active chapers. While it has literary roots, it has always been a fraternity - the founder of ADPhi originally looked to KA (the Northern one) before founding ADPhi instead.

I got the above from their website. It's not a HUGE issue, so much as one of those bumps in the road that grate your teeth.

No, I meant if you wore the "costume." Never mind.

My aunt and cousin live just down a side street from Navy/Marine Corp Memorial Stadium.

Another cousin married a Mid/Ensign on graduation day, but unfortunately it didn't last.

As for the Academy, a few years ago I directed ten service academy football games for a syndicated network -- three at each academy and one at the Meadowlands.

Most impressive folks. A lot more fun than directing "big time" conferences.

sueali 12-01-2003 12:53 PM

I guess I'm lucky my GDI is practically a Sigma Kappa. We've been together since I was a new member, and from the get go understood what SK meant to me. All of my sisters know him and even after I became an alum still comes with me back to my chapter to help set up for recruitment.

There is PB&J mush all over my screen! :D

I may have mentioned this before, but the Munchkin family is 4 generations Navy. My uncle just retired as Captain, and my cousin is a LtCDR now.

Isn't the ADPhi Society co-ed, which explains why the rituals are identical? I know that our chapter went co-ed, and there's tension between them and the Fraternity, but not the Society.

Right. Alpha Delta Phi Society was formed by chapters of Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity that wanted to go co-ed. According to the Society's website:

The Alpha Delta Phi Society is a literary society and one of North America's foremost co-educational Greek-letter institutions, with six active chapters. The heritage, traditions, and history of the Alpha Delta Phi date back to 1832, when Samuel Eells of Hamilton College set out to found a "union for intellectual and literary purposes" with "the integrity of youthful character". The strength and principles of Eells' new society fueled its rapid spread, and it became the first fraternity at eleven campuses including Harvard, Columbia, Yale, Brown, and Amherst.

Wishing to open their doors (and traditions) to women as well as men, some of the Alpha Delta Phi's chapters became co-educational starting in the 1970's. In 1992, the Alpha Delta Phi divided into two separate and self-governing organizations: the Alpha Delta Phi Society, and the Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity. The Society has a "home rule" membership policy that welcomes co-educational chapters, while the Fraternity's constitution limits membership to males.

As to geographic dispersion, five of the Society's six chapter are in New England and New York; the sixth is at Stanford in California. The Fraternity, according to its website, has 24 active chapters, most of which are in New England/New York, Canada, the northern mid-west, or California. The only active chapter at a Southern college/university is at UVa. There are two affiliate chapters (colonies) -- U Texas-Austin and Penn State. The website says nothing about inactive chapters.

/hijack. Now back to GDI spouses (which I am glad is a problem I don't have).

Sometimes I don't "get it," either. "Being Greek" can be as full of isht as anything else is, these days. That's neither here, nor there.

But, perhaps you told him more of the bad times than the good times. Or, you just plain told him some things that were none of his GDI business.

Afterall, GDIs will remember the "rough times during your sorority house experience," while you've moved onto experience the good times.

Can we say "over-involvement from a nonmember?"

I guess things are different everywhere I go.

hotdamnway to jump down somebody's throat.

sueali, way to pick a guy who supports what you're interested in! And the collegiate Sigma Kappas must love it.

Yes, they are. I think every organization does things differently which is why we're not all just a part of a huge, billion person fraternity :)
