NCSU is open for Expansion!

The vote passed last Wednesday night to colonize another sorority on campus. The colonization will take place right after formal recruitment in the Fall of '04. As some of you know Delta Gamma just colonized a year ago (Nov. 17th was our first birthday!), and we are all excited to see how successful we have been. We can't wait to see another sorority find equal success!

So if anyone has strong national ties and wants to see their organization represented at North Carolina State University, here is your chance! :D

We're so excited!

OrigamiTulip 11-24-2003 12:24 AM

Which groups are already on the campus?

Kevin 11-24-2003 12:29 AM

Geez that's some fast expansion. What changes on campus have prompted such a fast expansion of the panhellenic system?

Unregistered- 11-24-2003 12:33 AM

According to the NCSU Greek Life website, the following are the existing sororities:

Alpha Delta Pi
Chi Omega
Delta Gamma
Delta Zeta
Sigma Kappa
Zeta Tau Alpha

Does anyone know if there have been sororities there that have since closed? If so, what were they?

WhiteDaisy128 11-24-2003 01:47 AM

Yep, there are the above 6 on campus now. Alpha Phi was here but closed a year before DG came on campus. And Alpha Xi Delta was here but closed in the late 80's I think. We are trying to go up to 10 sororities with in the next 6 years or so...our campus is very large with an increasing female population. NCSU used to be 70%-30% guys to girls but is now very close to 50%-50% yet we have 6 NPC Sororities and 23 IFC Fraternities. They think (through known and estimated statistics) that our campus (30,000+ students) should really hold at least 9 or 10 sororities. They would like to colonize a new group every two years (if groups continue to do well) until they meet this goal.

AlphaPhiBubbles 11-24-2003 04:17 AM

BRING BACK ALPHA PHI!

hehe just kidding. well half kidding...im sure there was a reason they closed relativley recently. :)

Jill1228 11-24-2003 05:39 AM

Yeah. But I would like to see Alpha Phi representing there! :)

WhiteDaisy128 11-24-2003 10:01 AM

I would love to see either Alpha Phi or Alpha Xi Delta back. I was not around when Alpha Xi Delta was around, but I was here the year Alpha Phi closed. They are such awesome girls and the national sorority itself is super strong, but I think it will probably be too soon for them to recolonize. Although we cross our fingers in a few years it will not be. OF COURSE though, if Alpha Phi choses to send a packet of interest they will fairly be looked at and evaluated with the rest of them. The three finalists last time were Delta Gamma, Kappa Delta, and Delta Delta Delta. We are leveling the playing ground and all groups will have to re-submit packages (we are not just going to look at KD and DDD)...yay! I'm super excited! :D

AlphaXiGirl 11-24-2003 10:29 AM

As a North Carolina Alpha Xi Delta, of course, I would love to see us back at NCSU.

We have chapters at Western Carolina, UNC Asheville, UNC Wilmington, East Carolina, Elon, Methodist, and Wingate... NCSU would be chapter #8 in the state.... Elon, Methodist, and Wingate have all been established since our chapter closed at State in the late 80's.

It's great to see a greek system flourishing like the one at NCSU!

Txsurfinwaves 11-24-2003 10:47 AM

Pi Phi, anyone?

Yes, I am a little biased. We do have VERY strong nationals, though. I think we also need some more chapter in the Carolinas....

butterfly2001nc 11-24-2003 11:21 AM

wow! Greek Life is going to blow up at NCSU! that's great! what about kappa kappa gamma or phi mu at ncsu?

WhiteDaisy128 11-24-2003 01:12 PM

I'm super excited about ANY group! I can't wait until the presentations so I can see them (all NPC women are invited)!!!

butterfly2001nc 11-24-2003 01:58 PM

when are they going to start presenting? in the spring right?

WhiteDaisy128 11-25-2003 11:04 AM

Yeah, I assume that the groups not on campus will be contacted asap so they can begin to express interest and send materials. Once those are all received and the groups are narrowed down to 3, they will be invited to campus. This will be in the spring. It makes sense that KD and Tri-Delt would be strong competitors as I know they both have been aggressivly checking with Greek Life to check Delta Gamma's success (especially Tri-Delta)...BUT they will be on an even playing ground. They are starting over because there are over 100 new Greek women on campus (Yay Dee Gee!) and they want us to have an imput too (which is why they are just not going to invite KD or Tri-Delta right off the bat).

Several people have PMed me asking for some more information. I'll try to get that to you tonight...I've been swamped with school work and classes end for Thanksgiving today so I'll have more time this evening.

butterfly2001nc 11-25-2003 11:19 AM

Hey, CJ! Can you keep us posted on this whole process? it was so great ween DG came last year? working at the GL office while at NCSU, it was really cool to see that whole process and to meet Erin and the other DG rep. They were both soo sweet, esp. Erin.

Hope all is well!

sigmagrrl 11-25-2003 11:23 AM

Tri Sigma is active at 9 colleges in NC....We have an amazing amount of alumnae support...I think we'd be an EXCELLENT choice!!

Active Chapters in North Carolina

University of NC-Chapel Hill, Delta Delta
Elon College, Delta Beta
University of NC-Greensboro, Epsilon Nu
East Carolina University, Gamma Beta
University of NC-Pembroke, Delta Theta
North Carolina Wesleyan College, Eta Delta
University of NC-Wilmington, Epsilon Phi
Barton College, Gamma Xi
Wingate University, Zeta Lambda

Lil' Hannah 11-25-2003 01:26 PM

I have several friends who are Tri Sigmas at Elon...very strong chapter.

I wish they'd expand at my school, it all sounds very exciting.

Here's a question, CJ...how do you feel being such a young chapter and already having a new chapter come in? I know you said there was a need, but I'm just curious if your chapter likes being the new house on campus or you're relieved not to be, or anything like that.

Keep us posted!

dddgirly02 11-25-2003 02:50 PM

Hey Lil'Hannah

I just wanted to tell you I like the quote in your signature. Ida Shaw Martin is actually one of the founders of my sorority (Tri Delta). She used to go by Sarah Ida Shaw. Just something I thought I'd share. Have a good day:)

rainbowbrightCS 11-25-2003 07:46 PM

Wow, one GLO every 2 years, that fast. But as you said it is needed. Good job.

DeltaGammaWolf 11-25-2003 09:58 PM

I'm in WhiteDaisy's chapter, I am really excited about a new chapter coming on campus. DG has done really well and is right up there with the other 5 chapters on campus. In fact, many of the freshmen on campus don't realize that we just started last fall. It's been really exciting and I am looking forward to having another sorority on campus so other girls can have the opportunity that I have had!

WhiteDaisy128 11-26-2003 12:07 AM

I'll keep everyone updated as I know things.

I have mixed emotions about a new chapter coming to campus. I think it is an AMAZING opportunity for women on campus. However, recruitment numbers were down slightly from last year (but bid matching was higher) and the number of women being admitted to NCSU is increasing. So hopefully with good PR and everything we can bring the numbers going through recruitment up as the number of women increases.

As a DG (the "new" group on campus), it's just like DGWolf said, a lot of freshmen don't even realize we are new. During recruitment this past year it both hurt us and helped up. Some people wanted to be members of a more "established" chapter...others wanted to be a part of something new. I suppose it is logical that something like that would happen.

I will not say who voted what, but the Panhellenic vote was as follows:
2 Chapters voted NO to expansion
4 Chapters voted YES to expansion

There are several positives and negatives either way.

In any case though, I think a new sorority on campus will be a great addition. The DG's were welcomed on campus with open arms and I have no doubt that the new group will reveive just as much of a welcome as we did! :D

ThetaPrincess24 11-26-2003 12:44 AM

I believe Theta has to be invited by a college's Panhellenic before they will consider colonizing. I would love to see a new Theta chapter in NC. Please contact nationals :)

Haha, I think you take me too seriously. I'm just giving everyone the heads up. NCSU's Panhellenic will (of course) contact all of the chapters and handle the process nationally. I do know that there are some people on CG that are involved at the national level...I just though I'd give them the heads up. I, by no means, am saying anything on behalf of our Panhellenic Council directly...I'm just telling you guys as a member of a Greek organization that is excited to see another group coming to campus soon!

IheartAphi 11-26-2003 06:14 PM

I want Theta or Phi Mu to come on---

I was in Alpha Phi the year we closed. We had 55 girls and 12,000$ in dept from poor financial decisions and advising. I personally do not want them to be allowed back on campus because of the situations that we closed on. I got the impression that their intention was to close and try to come back on after we had graduated rather than assist the chapter. We never were sent an ELC or received International guidance with rush, other than when we were founded. We were colonized in 1990, supposed to close in '96, but wasn't because of change of heart-

DZ was colonized a few years after we were. They were struggling to get into the upper 70's when we closed, but seem to be doing really well after a strong COB last year

A couple of groups were adamently opposed to bring on KD or Tri Delt because they felt that their strong southern reputation would give their "elitest chapters" too much rush competition. Not that DG isn't an awesome group of girls, but its one of the first chapters in NC.

It was pretty heated in deciding who to allow on> I really want to know who voted yes and no CJ

Tom Earp 11-26-2003 07:15 PM

Regardless who comes on, the main thing I see is the Difference of the # of Fraternitys and Soroitys.

We have the same thing at my old Alma Mater. 3 Soros and 6 Fraternitys.

I have discussed this a couple of times with the School Greek Life person.

Ha, well not until the currents get their #'s up.

Short sightedness is not an eye affiliction.

We have 6500 students and maybe 7/8 % Greeks. That tells me something!

AGDLynn 11-27-2003 12:29 AM

Okay, it took Google for it to dawn on me that NCSU was NC State :)

I only think of NC State as basketball or football teams, lol.

Oh well.. it would be great to our 6th AGD chapter!!

IheartAphi 11-27-2003 11:42 AM

Also- the majority of Fraternities at NCSU are really small. Some range in the 10's while most I think are still around 20-30.

There are a few that have 70-80s members.

Its kinda sad.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 11-27-2003 12:59 PM

I knew an Alpha Phi while I was at NC State and she was a real credit to the sorority - strong, great character, a lot of fun. If there'd been a chapter at the school I transferred to I would have joined Alpha Phi.

Works out OK though because it turns out I was a true Phi Mu :D

Anyway, it's a shame to hear they closed, but I'm looking forward to hearing about the expansion process.

it would be soooo awesome if we could get KD at NCSU!!!

--praying KD gets chosen!!!

HotDamnImAPhiMu 11-27-2003 08:54 PM

KDs are hot.

WhiteDaisy128 12-05-2003 08:31 PM

The first extension committee meeting will be on December 16th at 7:00 PM. The committee will be made up of one advisor and one member from each of the sororities on campus right now. I have asked my president if I could represent our chapter, but I haven't heard back yet.

breathesgelatin 12-06-2003 12:33 AM

Oh my god.

I SO WANT PI PHI THERE!

That said, I'm not sure it will happen. Unfortunately we only have 3 chapters in my home state (UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke, and Wake Forest). I know the Triangle area alum group is really strong, and I would love to fill out the RTP... I do know that our nationals has been pretty busy w/ expansion and is pretty selective about where they choose to go... Plus since like 40% of the kids from my high school go to NCSU I'd probably get some of my friends to go through colonization... Anyway, I will be thrilled for whoever gets chosen! Be sure to keep us updated Raleigh girls! :)

There's a lot of potential b/c there are many groups that are not at NCSU right now. :) Good luck to the decision makers!

I agree with you 100%! (as always) I know nationals is pretty selective, but the only way to grow in states where we are smaller is to add more! Do you know if nationals is even considering...since they have had such a sucessful rush and numbers?

Having come from a school where the majority of the student population was greek and then coming to State, I am amazed at the misconceptions held by so many non-greek students. Going greek has so much to offer students, yet many of the young women I have met that are not greek don't join because of the stereotypes they associate with sororities. I think it would be great if NCSU greek system expanded. It would only add to publicity of the greek system and hopefully increase involvement and participation among the students. I am excited to see another group of diverse women get started. Of course I am a TAD biased, and would love to see Tri Delta come on board!

EGDeepher 12-06-2003 03:47 PM

My vote goes to D Phi E. But then again I'm partial ;)

Tom Earp 12-06-2003 06:46 PM

Nothing wrong with wanting a T-D Chapter there.

I find it is hard for people to beleive that the stronger The Greek System the Better!

NPC Groups seem to be the hardest to realize this. Quotas stand in the way to my beleif!

When you have a School of 6,500 + and 8 % are Greeks 6 Fraternitys and 3 Soroitys what is wrong with that picture!????

Not to forget our NHPC Orgs, there were 4. 2 each, now down to one each!:(

I am fully Greek minded if you cannot tell! To me, the more on Campus, the more Greeks will be promoted!

AAgammagirl 12-06-2003 10:26 PM

what about Gamma Phi Beta?
i think we just expanded in north carolina this year. wow, that'd be crazy if we did it again!

imsohappythatiama 12-06-2003 11:03 PM

I (personally) would love to see KKG expand to NCSU...we have 3 chapters in NC at present (Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, and Wake). It would be lovely to add NCSU to our family!
