Old "fear Of Clowns" Post

Reading the "phobia" thread reminded me of a post someone wrote at least a year or two ago where she (I remember the writer was a she) talked about her fear of clowns. A notable paragraph was where she described walking into a performance art exhibit which turned out to be many television screens with clown images and she was so upset she had an anxiety attack.

I tried to search, but I can't find the post and it was, without a doubt, one of the most hilarious things I have ever read in my life.

Can the author step forward? Or someone who might remember what I'm talking about?

Thanks!

AlphaGam1019 11-22-2003 05:07 PM

isn't AXOalum scared of clowns?

madmax 11-22-2003 05:11 PM

I think this is the thread: http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...d&pagenumber=2

I had never heard of a fear of clowns until AXOAlum said something about it. Now when I ask my Spanish students to tell what they're afraid of, "payasos"--clowns--is number one. They say that the movie "It" did it to them.

I don't want to see that movie.

OUlioness01 11-22-2003 06:26 PM

It is the reasome i'm afraid of clowns...and of spiders.

winnieb 11-22-2003 07:18 PM

I am scared of clowns. Besides being scary, they are wrong. Clowns are usually men-- men in makeup hanging around little kids--that just isn't right!!!

I've been scared of clowns since i saw Poltergeist and It when I was probably too young to be seeing them in the first place.........

The1calledTKE 11-22-2003 08:51 PM

Pennywise from the book and movie "It" is the coolest clown around.

Found it!

I did some digging, and finally came up with the original post from February of 2001. With compliments to imsohappythatiama, I'm re-running it. And I was rolling on the floor AGAIN after I read it just now :D .....

I just want to say that I am so glad that other people are terrified of clowns. My fiance teases me mercifully because I am terrified--TERRIFIED--of clowns. Heretofore, the only other "person" that I knew to be afraid of clowns was Kramer on Seinfeld...which did not give me much support.

Let me tell you a few clown stories.

(1) When I was a kid, this guy who lived down the street from us was home during the day (he was home, sick), and someone rang his doorbell. He got up to see who it was, and there was a clown standing at his door. So he opened the door, and the clown shot him in the face, point blank, and killed him. Turns out that the clown was a hitman, and went to the wrong address . .. this kept me up nights as a child.

(2) Poltergeist. That damn crocheted clown doll pulls the little girl under the bed, and won't let her up again. Horrifying.

(3) The movie, "It." That Pennywise is enough to send me to the hospital, I swear to God. Once I had to lie down on the floor and breathe into a bag because I was flipping through the channels and there was that darn clown Pennywise flapping his big lips. It's giving me the sweats just thinking about it now.

(4) John Wayne Gacy. Don't bring that one up. Ugh. The horror.

(5)That clown in the background of the Christina Aquilera "What a Girl Wants" video. La-la-la, nice video, Christina and gal pals dancing, and then WHAM!!! Big scary clown mannequin the the background! Utterly uncalled for and upsetting! I can't watch that video, because I never can remember which part has the clown in it, and it always sneaks up on me and scares the poo out of me. Ugh.

(6) Clowns hiding the crowd. Why are they always doing that? Like just this morning, I was watching the Today show, and jolly Al Roker is out there shaking hands with the crowd, and the camera is panning faces in the crowd, and them WHAM! There is a big clown face. What's up with that? I don't need that kind of stress in the morning! I spilled my coffee all over my blouse and had to change my outfit. Darn those clowns!

(7) Okay, here is the funniest. You won't believe that my fiance is marrying me after you read this one! When he and I were first dating, he took me to Chicago for a special weekend, and we went to the Museum of Art there, which is incredible. As we made our way toward the Modern Art wing of the museum, we kept hearing this bizarre moaning that was on a loop tape. It just moaned over and over. So we heard this moaning for maybe 30 minutes, and it was driving me crazy, so I said, "Hey, let's go see where that moaning is coming from--it's probably performance art, or something." Now, my fiance doesn't like performance art, but he went with me, and we found the source of the moaning. It was like this little fun house of mirrors, and you had to go into it and push this button, and a film (plus the moaning soundtrack would start up). I was feeling kind of romantic, because it was a dark little secluded area, and I was smooching my fiance (then boyfriend) in this little hall of mirrors-like place when he hit the button, and all of a sudden--I KID YOU NOT--on about 15 screens all around me, were different movies of clowns. A clown getting run over by a bus. A clown sitting on toilet, taking a dump. A clown biting a man's nose off. A clown punching another clown in the stomach. Those are the only ones I can remember, but there were more. And the wailing, my God, the wailing! So I immediately start to cry and hyperventilate. I had not told my then-boyfriend about my clown psychosis, and so he grabs me by the shoulders and shakes me to see what is wrong .. . and I throw up all over him, and then pass out in a slump on the floor. To sum up the rest of the story, he has to drag me out of the hall of mirrors thing, and lay me out on the floor in the middle of the art museum, and an ambulance comes and gives me oxygen. It was HORRIBLE! The most embarassing moment of my adult life.

And THAT, friends, is WHY CLOWNS ARE HORRIBLE!!!!!]

SERIOUSLY...

That is the BEST thread EVER on GC. Hands Down. Of all Time. Only the Barbie thread from 2000 comes in a close second. Followed by the junk stank and ho be lookin like predator posts in third and fourth.

I almost pissed myself when I read this thread the first time. Thanks for the laugh KR and ISHTIAT.

I don't know man, the "Ho be lookin like predator" is equally as freaking hilarious as the clown post.

KABillyMac's incident with the chainsaw and Zenith follows close behind too. :D

I don't want to see that movie.

There's also the classic film "Killer Clowns from Outer Space." Absolutely hilarious, possibly, one of the worst movies of all time; and it's supposed to be a horror movie.

ZTAngel 11-23-2003 03:00 PM

When I was little, my grandparents use to take my sister and me to the Barnum & Bailey Circus every year. My grandfather took me to get some popcorn and there was this booth where you could get your face painted as a clown. So, I got my face painted and we walked back to where my grandmother and my sister (she was 5) were sitting. My sister saw me and just started SCREAMING. I kept trying to tell her that it was me but she kept screaming bloody murder. She refused to sit anywhere near me. Not to mention that there were clowns EVERYWHERE. During one of the acts where all the clowns are onstage, my sister would bury head in my grandmother's shoulder and just start wailing.
To this day, she's frightened of them. She called me the day after Halloween this year to tell me about her embarrassing moment. Some guy went to the party she was at dressed as a clown. She spilled her drink all over herself and started having a panic attack. She got all shaky and ran to the bathroom. She stayed there the rest of the night throwing up.

ETA:
Any psychology people out there know why there are so many people afraid of clowns? What is it about them that give so many people the heeby-jeebies?

AlphaGam1019 11-23-2003 03:53 PM

I have the circus theme in my head. :P

OUlioness01 11-23-2003 09:07 PM

i completely forgot about that post!!!!!!!

AchtungBaby80 11-23-2003 11:40 PM

You know why clowns are so downright freaky and scary, don't you? It's because modern clowns' makeup and costumes are derived from outfits worn by actors playing the Devil in medieval theatre productions...no kidding, I read this somewhere. I can totally see it...clowns are awful.

Hootie 11-24-2003 12:01 AM

I remember the first time I read that post...I had tears running down my face b/c I was laughing so hard! SUCH A CLASSIC! ;)

*shiver* I can definitely see it, too. Know what else is freaky about clowns? They always have that big, goofy smile painted on their face so you can never tell by their expression what they're thinking. It's unsettling. I don't actually know anyone who likes clowns.

lifesaver 11-24-2003 03:54 AM

I dotn know if I shared this with ya'll, but I have the fear of clowns and about 2 months ago I went to Austin to see my friend Melissa who is at UT law. So were out at some bar on 6th street and were all gettign our drink on, dancing having a good time, the group's having a good time, yada.

I look over and theres 5 clowns in full on makeup dancing and freaking with each other. This one clown is licking this chick clowns nipples on the dance floor, getting makeup all over her boob, TOTALLY FREAKING ME OUT. I almost had to go to the ER.

DWAlphaGam 11-24-2003 11:59 AM

OMG, lifesaver, that is just wrong, but hysterical!!!

Has anyone seen the Saturn Ion commercial with the clowns in the backseat of the car? The clown in the middle is especially evil. I drive a Saturn (not an Ion, though) and I now find myself checking for clowns in my backseat...ACK!!!

James 11-24-2003 12:22 PM

The clowns ae coming for you . . .

AlphaGam1019 11-24-2003 12:28 PM

James is uber mean :p

DWAlphaGam 11-24-2003 01:11 PM

James, that was the meanest thing ever. I'm going to go curl up in a corner and cry now.

adpialumcsuc 11-24-2003 02:46 PM

Pennywise is the sole reason that I hate clowns. We went to tha state fair this year and I almost cried when a clown came up too me. All my family could do was laugh but I thought I was going to pass out. SCARY!!

James 11-25-2003 11:29 PM

Sorry . . .

i used to be indifferent about the whole clown thing...

but now i think i'm officially scared. that picture is terrifying.

dekeguy 11-26-2003 02:59 AM

I never could figure out how clowns were supposed to be funny. When I was a kid and my parents would take us to the circus I was at first bored by the clowns and then annoyed by them as they tended to interrupt interesting performances and generally get in the way. Also, I couldn't figure out why anyone would want to set themselves up intentionally to be objects of ridicule. Why would anyone make a career out of looking and acting like a total idiot. I understand the role of the "fool" in the royal courts of the middle ages but I expect that role has now been assigned to network anchor persons. Sorry, I just find clowns pointless.

tinydancer 11-27-2003 10:58 AM

The 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders at my school recently went to the circus. One teacher complained to the principal that she couldn't possibly go because she is afraid of clowns. The principal didn't make her go. Of course, her fellow teachers thought that was totally lame.

I thought about this thread and laughed myself silly.:p

imsohappythatiama 12-07-2003 09:14 PM

Arrrgh, I had forgotten about my clown rant....I have to say it made me laugh a bit when I read it again here!

James....I am coming after you. Not nice to post that Pennywise picture!

Also--that Saturn ad with the clowns? Oh no, don't even start! Everytime I hear that music I have to run into the other room. It's horrible. And the worst part about it is that everytime I get up and run in the other room, my butthead husband starts laughing like it's the funniest thing he's ever seen. It's no good.

Also, that scene with the clown in Old School. No man, I can't watch that part. Which sucks, because I love it when Will Ferrell gets shot in the neck with the dart ("You're crazy man. I like you, but you're crazy.") I have to watch the whole scene with my hands in front of my face.

Also, my church used to have a "Clown Ministry," where they used a clown troupe to act out stories from the Bible. Trust me, seeing a clown crucified with a crown of thorns on his rainbow-wigged head is not something I wanted to see. I'd just read the hymnal for the duration of the little skit. People would be like, "Wasn't that special?" Ummmm....no. And I don't think Jesus would appreciate being portrayed by that hack with the big red lips and ridiculous shoes. And I'm pretty sure they didn't have suspenders and face paint back in the Biblical day.

Clowns suck. Can't we do without them???

OH MY LORD!

I thought that "Clown Ministry" would be something where church members dressed as clowns to visit hospital residents, sick children, invalids, nursing home residents, etc.

Using clowns to enact Bible stories is sick... and weird!

My sister knows I am scared of clowns and the biaaaaaa got me an Emmet Kelly Clown Picture calendar.

texas*princess 01-12-2004 11:53 PM

one of my cousins collected clowns when she was younger, and I would NEVER go into her room when we went to visit b/c there were just clowns EVERYWHERE!!! It was pretty scary... all I could think about was that Stephen King movie "It"

SERIOUSLY, that would make me not like clowns or Jesus. Thats creepy. A crucified clown/Jesus. Wow.

carnation 03-24-2007 08:22 AM

I had to go back and read imsohappythatiama's post about clowns because we were talking about clowns on the mods' forum so I'm bumping this...not to make fun of you, imsohappy! Just because the thread was so entertaining!

All you claurophobes--don't read it!

BetteDavisEyes 03-24-2007 11:40 AM

My hubby is afraid of clowns. I always tease him about being a macho cop but is deathly afraid of clowns. He's told me point blank that when and if we have kids, clowns will NEVER be a part of their life. I had to laugh.
