The Da Vinci Code

I just finished reading it, and it was so awesome! Has anyone else read it? Any thoughts?

lauralaylin 11-21-2003 12:03 PM

I haven't read it yet, but being the good bookseller that I am, I must recommend Pompeii to you. I guess everyone who likes The DaVinci Code loves this book as well. I want to buy them both, but I'm waiting until after Christmas because my mom's already done her shopping. I'm glad to hear that you liked it too though!

wreckingcrew 11-21-2003 12:06 PM

No, i haven't, don't tell me about it though.

I picked up Angels and Demons in the airport in Minneapolis and haven't been able to put it down. I think it's the one written before DaVinci Code.

When i finish i'm gonna move on to the DC.

Da Vinci Code is a great read! I just finished it this week--sometimes it is good to be sick in bed with nothing else to do! :)

I finished both of the online quests yesterday afternoon. That was a fun way to spend a few hours. I will definitely be picking up "Angels and Demons" soon!

Nikki_DZ 11-21-2003 03:33 PM

Finished it this week, too! (Those wanting to pick it up, Borders has it 30% off right now).

I spent the last couple of days (stuck inside b/c I'm sick) researching the Priory, the Holy Grail, and Mary Magdalene on google. I put my name on the waiting list to get Angels and Demons from the local library. A nurse at my doctor's office said it was even better than DaVinci.

Oooh, did you find out anything interesting that agrees with what the book said?

I have to pick up Angels and Demons soon.

BSP_Nicole 11-21-2003 05:40 PM

I've read all four of Dan Brown's books, and I just have to say that he is an AWESOME writer! And his website is so cool, if you like his books, then definately check it out.

I couldn't put the book down! I want to get Angels and Demons next. What's Angels and Demons about? I have heard great things...

Lady Pi Phi 11-25-2003 10:16 AM

I just picked up this book last night. While I only read the first 2 chapters, it seems really interesting and I can't wait to finish it.

Don't give anything away.

eta: There is also a discussion in the AKA forum and they talk about a website. Does anyone know if you have to use the website for the book or is it just for a little added fun/intrigue?

greeklawgirl 11-25-2003 12:34 PM

No, you don't need the website to read the book. However, if you go onto the website, you will find two "quests" which include riddles, puzzles, anagrams, etc for fun. The book comes in handy, especially for the second quest.

greeklawboy is on Chapter 52 right now and he is loving this book too!

MoxieGrrl 11-25-2003 03:14 PM

I *loved* the DaVinci Code! Couldn't put it down! Hopefully I'll get my hands on a copy of Angels and Demons soon. (If you turn the cover of Angels and Demons upside down, it still reads "Angels and Demons." Don't know if I explained that exactly right, but try it. :) )

OUlioness01 11-25-2003 10:10 PM

Angels and Demons is a must-read! i may have to go out and find the DaVinci Code now

greeklawgirl 11-26-2003 01:07 AM

I just got home from Target and picked up a copy of "Angels and Demons." I can't wait to get started reading it! :)

phisigduchesscv 11-26-2003 03:27 AM

Fantastic Book

I'm not a big fan of mystery/thriller/intrigue type books but I couldn't put this book down (not a good thing with finals in 3 weeks and 4 papers due). My mom just finished reading it too and went out to buy Angel and Demons. She's already finished that but I've told her lock it up until after 10:00 p.m. on December 12th when I get out of my last final then make sure it's sitting on my bed so I can stay up reading it all night long.

I keep saying I want to check out the websites they have. Can someone list them here for the people who haven't read the book yet but want to see whats up. I can't remember them off the top of my head.

For those who want to learn more about the Holy Grail read Holy Blood, Holy Grail - it came out in the late 80's early 90's and addresses some of what was brought up.

I just love this book!
I'm on chapter 69 right now. I haven't had much time read because I've been busy with work and other stuff. I read what I can on the subway every morning on the way to work and I read what I can on the way home.
I've asked for Angels and Demons for Christmas, so I'm hoping it's just as good as this one.

Schmeer 12-02-2003 12:23 PM

I love the Dan Brown books...

as someone else mentioned..you should read angels and demons too..its before the Da Vinci code, you should also print out a copy of the last supper painting and check it out as you read.

i also read his other code breaking books about the NSA...and others. forget the names at the moment, but I recommend them too!

Lady Pi Phi 12-02-2003 12:35 PM

Is that thing about "The Last Supper" really true?

Eta: his other books are "Deception Point" and "Digital Fortress"

wreckingcrew 12-02-2003 02:53 PM

Yeah, i finished Angels and Demons over Thanksgiving break.

That book is oustanding. Right up until the end, stuff keeps happening that just blindsides you. It was AWESOME!

I put the DaVinci Code on my Christmas list, i'm pretty sure my Mom will get it for me, i got her hooked on A&D before i was halfway through.

I'm almost done The Da Vinci Code, and I just came back from my lunch breakk after picking up Angels and Demons. I can't wait to read it. i had this one on my christmas list but I think I'll ask for Digital fortress if all is books are as good as The Da Vinci Code.

Lady Pi Phi 12-02-2003 09:18 PM

I just finished the book!!!! Excellent, excellent, excellent. For those that haven't read it. DO SO!!!
For those that have. Wow. I want to talk about the book, but I don't want to give anything away.

I have to say it sure does seem true. There is an extra hand with a knife that I can't figure out who it belongs to. The gesture across the throat does look threatening if you look at it in the context of what is said in DaVinci code. I must say it really has me thinking a bit more.

I looked at the painting myself yesterday, and if you look at "John"...let's just say I can see what he's talking about (I don't want to give too much away).

Or maybe it's because he's mentioned it that I am looking at the painting that way.
It would be interesting to read if anyone else has similar theories on "The Last Supper"

wreckingcrew 12-03-2003 12:03 PM

why don't you guys start a Da Vinci Code SPOILER thread so y'all don't accidentally ruin it for the rest of us?

That way, when i get it and finish it we can all discuss together.

You guys know that "The DaVinci Code" is a NOVEL right? As in fiction? As in made up for entertainment and not to be taken seriously? Just like the "X-Files"?

gee thanks for the tip.

You do realize that some of his book is based on historical fact and some theories.

Yes, I'm aware of the "facts" and "theories".

I just have an inherent suspicion of anything labeled a "religious thriller". Sometimes these fictions and "theories" and "conclusions" (not the same as facts) get incorporated into general thinking as actual facts, through sheer repetition. I consider this a bad thing.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Enjoy your reading.

Kind of like the good book, don't you think? How much of what is written is actually true?

I finished "Angels and Demons" last week. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time-- I thought the subject matter was much darker than DVC. Can't wait to read the next Robert Langdon book!

WORD.

By the way, why don't we just start posting spoilers here instead of starting a whole new thread, which can get confusing? If you're not finished reading the book, don't read past this point. Don't say we didn't warn ya. :)

Let's post the spoilers on the other thread and leave this to those that are trying to get the book. In fact I'm going to go to that thread and respond to ADduncan about the book being fictitious etc.

Ok, that's what happens when I only respond to posts from my e-mail and I don't actually go and check in the forum. :p Guess I'll head over to the other thread when I get the chance.

SigmaChiCard 01-04-2004 10:14 PM

I've recently read both The da Vinci Code & Angels & Demons. A&D was good, but nothing compared to the code...it is obvious in the writing that Mr. Brown matured much as a writer between the books.

I truly loved the da Vinci code. I am infatuated with the Fibonacci sequence and Phi (which I too pronounce Fee...maybe it's a math thing). Also, I knew about the connection between Sangreal....although I was a little off because I had thought (without ever having done the research) that Sang Real was Blood of Christ....my AP English teacher was a bit off. It was neat though because by knowing that I predicted where the book was going to go, because there was quite a bit of time between the two revelations. I wish I'd read A&D first.....it'd have been better, but the code just overclouded it. I recognized the fibonacci sequence as I saw it. I don't think it mentioned it, but that number 1.618 is the result of a convergence of the fibonacci sequence. By dividing two consecutive numbers in the fibonacci sequence they approach 1.618 by the property of convergence in that they alternately approach it from above and below....essentially they bounce around it until they get high enough that they essentially equal it. Also most Greek & Roman architecture is built in accordance to it's ratio. Also, by sectioning off a golden rectangle (whose length to side ratio is 1.618) you can create a logarithmic spiral. It's such a fascinating number....to see a writer achknowledge it in any way is a great honor as something of a amateur scholar of the phenom. The bit about the pentagon I didn't know & found very interesting. I considered number theory as a college degree as a result of my likening to the sequence's oddity. I only know the basics, but I'm amazed by it.

So forgive me...I'm drunk...I've been rambling.....my tol is low these days. But the book is great because it's so possible. I remember reading in the last year that there truly has been a lot of speculation about Jesus & Mary Magdeline having been married & there is no question that The Last Supper has a ghostly hand + knife that belongs to no one, a woman who matches Jesus next to him and a very upset prophet next to Mary. Everyone loves a conspiracy.

And in A&D I' love the concept of the antimatter that truly would react with anything to produce the purest form of energy, combining positrons + electrons and neutralizing one another. Crazy stuff. Good stuff. It's late...good night!

Hope all are well,

Cory

_Opi_ 01-04-2004 10:32 PM

hmmm..this sounds like a phenomenal book..and I'm a book worm. I just heard about it like a week ago when my roomie bought the book. Cant wait to read it..(even though a new semester is starting and I wont have time)...

Lady Pi Phi 01-04-2004 10:35 PM

I definitely agree with SigmaChiCard that The Da Vinci Code is the better book.

I just bought Digital Fortress so I'm pretty excited to read that. I don't expect it to be as good as The Code, but I'm still hoping it's an exciting read.

dzandiloo 01-05-2004 12:30 PM

I don't know how I've missed this thread, but I had to post. I'm really depressed. I got the Da Vinci Code for Christmas, and will finish it today.

Does anyone else HATE it when they finish a fabulous book? I don't know what I'll do with myself now...and this is the first book in my entire life, that I haven't flipped to the end when I thought I figured it out (I'm terrible about that!).

Guess I'll go back and read this entire thread when I'm done... :(

Sister Havana 01-05-2004 01:37 PM

I read the Da Vinci Code last year, since it was a book for one of my book clubs. Not the type of book I'd normally pick up, but WOW. I read it on the plane to NYC and then had to finish reading it that day...I wanted to know what happened!

It is a fantastic book.

ISUKappa 01-06-2004 02:12 PM

The controversy surrounding The DaVinci code on another message board I frequent piqued my interest and I bought it and Angels and Demons. Read both in I think 4 days (I'm a total book junkie. I'll stay up until 2-3 a.m. reading because I don't want to stop and then hate myself for being so damn tired the next day). Yes, we must take fiction with a grain of salt, but if it gets us thinking and opening our minds, so much more the better, correct? That doesn't mean I'm going to drop everything I learned growing up in the Christian faith after reading the book, nor am I going to completely discount the possibility of something happening like in the DaVinci Code.

Brown's fast-paced writing style really helps keep the books moving along, but some of his forshadowing is kind of cheesy (I think). Like, "But if she only knew what would wait her later that day. . ." Mentally, I'm waiting to her the "dum dum dum" organ soundover in the background. But I still LOVE his books. I've read all 4 of them now, and though they all cover very different subject matter, they're all good, intriguing reads. I really hope he does more books with Robert Langdon.

Lady Pi Phi 01-06-2004 02:20 PM

I definitely agree with you ISUKappa.
We should take fiction with a grain of salt (after all it is fiction), but it does make you think. What if this is true? Wouldn't that be interesting.

I tend to think he did a little research when he wrote Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code. I doubt he pulled all of that out of his a$$. If he did, he's a damn good writer!
