chants/calls...help!

So here's the deal. Most music greeks have a call, or at least a chapter call. Like the Phi Mu Alpha chapter here does:

1 member: PHI MU....
All: ALPHA!!!!
1 member: DOUBLE O.... (their chapter is Omicron Omega)
All: YOU KNOW!

But with a name like Sigma Alpha Iota, and a chapter name like Epsilon Gamma, haha, how do you work THAT many syllables into one chant/call?

Anyone creative enough to think up something? My chapter has tried to come up with something for the last few years, and I've even talked to other sisters around the country. No luck.

Anyone???

NewBee 11-20-2003 02:35 AM

I hope someone helps you with the chants however, why do you need to "come up with" a call. For my limited knowledge, the sororities that have calls, have so for a reason that is special and private to them. Its not something that they do just to sound cool. But I could be wrong...

sairose 11-20-2003 02:50 AM

Well the other music GLOs on my campus have calls that they came up with years ago. Not nationally, but just here. I don't think it would be disrespectful to have one; but if I am wrong someone please correct me. :)

I am not saying its disrespectful. I am just saying that it seems ...

well fake. Its like if the other sororities jump off a cliff, would your sorority do it as well? All I am saying is wouldn't it mean something more to your org if you came up with a call with your sorority sisters, instead of on Greek Chat, a public website.

If I am wrong, I apologize in advance. But regardless, whether on a national or local level, it just seems like a conversation you should have with your chapter instead of over the internet. But I hope you find what you are looking for.;)

GeekyPenguin 11-20-2003 04:10 AM

Are you just looking for chants? I've never heard anybody use a call, that's why I'm curious. I would try contacting a few other SAI chapters and asking them.

Calls

Just to clarify what a call is... A call is something that the members do to identify themselves when they see each other. Yes, the meaning is private to members only. It may be something you have to do among yourself. Some example of call are different sounds, greek letters, acromyms, etc.:p

Well right - but there's other interpretations. Obviously an AKA yelling "SKEEEEE-WEEE" is doing their call, but there's more private calls and recognition methods. ;)

Zetagymnast 11-20-2003 04:40 AM

I agree...different sororities and fraternities have different ways of doing their calls. As the other examples I gave. Black Sororities and Fraternities might be different from others from other backgrouds it all depends. I am in a predominatly Black sorority so we have a call that is somewhat private. Most Black ones have calls from recognition purposes only.

OK then maybe what I'm referring to isn't quite a call. See, here, TBS has a thing where one member will yell "TAU BETA..." and everyone else answers "SIGMA!!!" And Phi Mu Alpha has one where one brother yells "PHI MU...." and the brothers all yell "ALPHA!" and then one yells "DOUBLE O"(their chapter is Omicron Omega) and everyone else yells "YOU KNOW!". I guess maybe that's not quite the same kind of call.

Well here's the thing. Our chapter has never been able to think of one, and we've talked to other chapters and people have talked about it before like at province weekend...and so it's not like I'm turning here INSTEAD of sisters.

I don't understand why me and my sisters are "fake" just because we want something fun to add to our sisterhood. If you're saying we're fake then technically all GLOs would be fake, because most are patterned after another by how they function. Don't all(or most) GLOs have crests? Symbols? Songs? Pins? Etc etc? The first group to have all that stuff patterned all the GLOs to come. So you tell me how wanting something another sorority/fraternity has is being "fake".

You misunderstood me. Maybe I wasn't clear enough. I didnt say you are fake, I said it seems fake not saying you and your sisters are or aren't that, it's just how it appears. But who cares what I think? Anyway, of course GLOs copy off each other, but all of that stuff you named, the crests, symbols, songs, etc, they all have a meaning behind them. When people start new orgs, they should do it with a purpose, or when old orgs adapt new traditions, they should do it with a purpose, and not just because everyone else is doing it, because I am sure those orgs have a reason for why they are doing it...

Those sound like calls to me.

gamma_girl52 11-20-2003 03:33 PM

Not to butt in but SAI DOES have a sorority call...I've heard it before. They also have a handsign as well.

That actutally is a call. For example, my letters are Zeta Lambda Psi and when I see one of my sister I say Zzzzzzzz, and the sister responds Psiiiiiiiiiiii. This is what is called a letter call. They are very popular as you can see in the examples you gave. Another example is are my brothers, their letters are Zeta Alpha Gamma Psi and their call is Z-psi and another brother responds Go Psi!! Just a example of letter calls. They are also secret calls which the meaning are known to members only but our call is obvious because of our letters. The sum things up calling out letters is a call.

Wow, I've never heard/seen other one! :) Could you fill me in?

WhirlwindTNX 11-21-2003 01:23 AM

Wait....why don't you know that your sorority might have a call?

Because it might not be ritual, and it might be something that one chapter made up.....

kappaloo 11-21-2003 01:58 AM

Interesting side note: when I was at CIFC, i learnt that the 'Oiii!" at the end of the Pat Song (kappas will know it) has turned into a recognition call at at least one Kappa chapter (aka you would do it in a group to find your sisters). :) I thought that was very cute.

Yeah, that's one thing I think is fun in meeting AXiDs from other chapters -- they usually know cheers and calls that we don't, and we exchange them.
I tried to think of an SAI one but the only thing I came up with was
"Who am I?"
"SAI!!!"
Which is admittedly pretty dumb and also not grammatically correct... :p
Good luck finding one!

For Your Viewing Enjoyment...

For sairose,

Here's one of your sister's chapter sites, the Theta Xi Chapter at Bethune-Cookman College. The SAI handsign is all over this page so you can take a look.

Theta Xi Chapter

The sorority call wasn't on there, but trust me they do have one.

GSS is the same way--we have a handsign and call, but not all of our chapters use it/know it. To be frank many of our AA chapters (including mine) use it more often and that may be the case with SAI too.

Hey, thanks for the info! But I tried to go to their site but looks like that's not the right link. :( I'll try again though.

gamma_girl52 11-21-2003 05:38 PM

I just tried it and it's back up now.

Click on "Pictures" :D I forgot to throw that in there.

sairose 11-21-2003 05:53 PM

ack, too much bandwidth again.

hadnsigns

Most handsigns have a meaning so you should find out from your sisters at another chapter what it is.

Actually, lots of them don't - or not a secret meaning. For example, I know a couple Gamma Phi chapters that will make their chapter name with their hands - Gamma Gamma, Epsilon Lambda, Delta Delta, etc. All that means is the chapter - not so secret.

It is not necessarily secret. It varies from sorority to sorority. The meaning for my handsign is only known by it's members. Well, we have two but the new one is the one we use the most because we revamped the sorority. The old one was just a Z with our hands and that is not a secret since our first letter is Z and we are known as the Zetas.

Imperial1 11-25-2003 01:55 AM

You asking about chants? Well I will tell you that the hook on Lil Jon's "Get Low" song ain't necessarily something he made up. Sigmas(Phi Beta Sigma) have been doing that "Window's to the wall" chant for the longest.

preciousjeni 05-21-2004 07:30 PM

Wow! This is old!! Has anyone figured out what the SAI call is? By the way, that "Windows to the Walls" chant is a Kappa chant where I'm from.

Zetagymnast 05-21-2004 09:55 PM

Yea, I been hearing alot of drama surrounding that song. Who has the details?

preciousjeni 05-21-2004 10:29 PM

I actually read (now I can't remember where, but it was a music mag) that Lil J and the EBs went to a stepshow and heard the chant. Then they made a song out of it. I can't authenticate that information, really, but I did read it.

WhirlwindTNX 05-21-2004 11:17 PM

I think that chant came from George Clinton and his gang. They did a performance at the Grammy's and said that same chant. It could have been some other group, but I'm not sure.....

Either way, it was still stolen, just not from Lil Jon.....I think....

If someone knows more about funk music, please feel free to respond

LOL nope! Oddly enough, on the SAI LIstserv this got brought up, and several chapters have their own, individual chants, but nothing that is common to many chapters.

Unfortunately, when your name is Sigma Alpha IOta...and your chapter is Epsilon Gamma....too many darn syllables. :D We've yet to find one that works!

I've NEVER heard Nupes/Kappas do that chant. I ONLY hear Sigmas do it wherever I go.

SurfinDBeach 05-23-2004 06:03 PM

Ours...

Us Tekes have a whole lot of chants/'Calls"/whatever you wanna call 'em...

We're usually known as the rowdy ones with our fight songs and chanting...

I'd post some of it, but MOST of it is inappropriate to share... :)

GO BEACH!!!

I don't know, but when it's getting used as a pick up line (i.e. "Make love to a Kappa man") because it's so well known...
