I watched. It wasn't really anything special. GHETTO indeed.

darling1 11-16-2003 08:38 PM

why o why

...........must we continue to set back the race??

i couldn't even bring myself to watch that stuff??

i am sure it was QUITE INTERESTING AND QUITE GHETTO!!

DramaQueen42401 11-17-2003 12:06 AM

I'm watching it right now. I am just shocked to see these chicks get excited b/c they are being chosen to show their butts to America. These girls are crying like they are going through American Idol. One girl got cut and she looked tore up about it. She would have been from Miami, embarrassing me, lol. I have no problem with big booty sisters feeling confident. I'm an apple bottom myself. But I will not "seriously, with the deep intent of winning" enter the contest. If they pick me, I'd dance a lil, like I would at any party and then go home, cuz it aint that deep. I will be a "low budget", local apple bottom. Lol.

Questions404 11-17-2003 11:07 AM

Congratulations to VH-1 for being able to capture the essence of Jenny Jones, Ricki Lake and Jerry Springer in one tiny little package. Thumbs up to racial sensitivity -- thumbs up to pride and dignity. Thumbs up to Apple Bottom Jeans -- way to uplift the race Nelly.

delph998 11-17-2003 11:14 AM

I watched it!

Inside out: Nelly's AppleBottom Contest=The degradation of the black race!!! :(

Inside out: Nelly's Applebottom Contest=The degradation of the black woman!!!! :(

This world has lost control!

Virtual Violet 11-17-2003 11:55 AM

I saw it too....and being an "apple bottom" who chose to use her BRAIN instead of her AZZ to get ahead, I actually feel sorry for those girls in the fact that they don't have the vision to see they can do better for themselves without showing their AZZ!!

ERRRRRRRR! WOMEN SHOW SOME SELF-REPSECT!

Thanks Nelly, between Apple Bottoms and Pimp Juice, I think you've got all the stereotypes covered!!!!

librasoul22 11-17-2003 12:58 PM

Okay I didn't see the show, but I just wanted to play devil's advocate.

Y'all know if Kid Rock or Fred Durst had clothing lines it would be the same thing. These guys degrade (white) women all the time. So basically, although this show was (I guess) casting black women in a horrible light, it isn't JUST black women who are being degraded by male artists.

Neosoulchild 11-17-2003 01:49 PM

I caught the end of this show, and I believe I heard the winner say something about going into broadcasting... Did anyone else hear this? And how do you think this could affect her future career in journalism?

ClassyLady 11-17-2003 03:25 PM

What I don't understand is why our women constantly subject themselves to this nonsense? I caught the end of the show and the girl with the organge dreds/twists was just too happy to shake her rear for an audience of hooting and hollering men. What's even worse is that the president of Apple Bottoms is a woman? What is wrong with this picture. For every smart, determined young black or latina woman who is relying on her mental capacity to get ahead, there are fifteen women openly using what they got to get what they think they want. I swear, two steps forward and three steps back.

As a journalist myself, I can tell you that she better go to college and get a broadcast journalism degree if she wants to go into broadcasting.
Because things such as writing your own copy, running a camera, editing tape, etc. are what beginning reporters need to do, not shaking one's azz for a modern-day minstrel show. That's something that no TV station in Lower Bum**** wants to see.
:p

oh nuh uh, he did NOT

For my own sick curiousity I went to the Applebottoms website. They have a link to the "collection", and says it is available in August of 03. Hey Nelly it is now NOVEMBER. You may want to update your site.

Nevermind I found the shopping area. There is a YOGA MINISKIRT for sale. How does one DO YOGA in a MINISKIRT? Just look at this thing, UGH. I am also not a big fan of writing on the behind as I have a big enough one I don't need more attention drawn to it.

Also why does it only come in a size XL if this is designed for women with curves and booty. That was like the Marilyn Monroe lingerie colelction not coming in sizes Marilyn herself could wear.

Shelacious 11-17-2003 04:18 PM

I saw the show off and on (it was on during football, so although the SO wanted to see the apple bottoms, apparently he wanted to see football just as much). At any rate, it was interesting, to say the least. Some of the women were pretty embarassing, but to be honest, it was conducted a bit more tastefully (albeit a bit of a stretch to say) than I'd imaginged. Generally, the women were more fully clothed at all times than in most videos. I do agree with a poster that mentioned that this same senario could and would happen with any ethnicity (and a few white and Latina women did indeed make it into the by-city finals). The president (with her own apple bottom, I will add) may handle the day-to-day, but clearly, the concept is Nelly's idea, as was the financial backing.

The clothes are not impressive all. Same ol' rocca, baby phat, lady enyce, fetish stuff. I suppose it works if you are about 16-22, which all the women were, so...

Quick comment and question...

Many of you seem upset and offended by Nelly's Apple Bottoms. Are you all upset at the name? the concept? or the contest?

I'm just trying to get a feel for the disgust.

desirethegreat1 11-17-2003 05:21 PM

When does this air? I have never heard of it...is it new?

Eventhough I haven't seen it...it sounds pretty stupid.

darling1 11-17-2003 06:22 PM

perhaps i am being a bit funky but...

i'm not white so my concern primarily isn't with that population.:( .

i do hear your point and it is a sad state of affairs all around.

==============================================

i think i am offended by the whole concept. i am all for someone making money as an entrepreneur, but i get tired of there being so many programs that seem to show us as ghetto bunny hootchies with no brains and wanting to be the next video ho'.

thank the Lord for the remote because i can choose what to what and my station right now is the Discovery Health Channel, particularly the BIRTH DAY SHOW ;) .

RedefinedDiva 11-17-2003 06:50 PM

Actually, I was not offended at all. That's on them. It was just a bunch of women trying to get a spokesmodel gig. Just like CK, Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, etc. have to get stick figures to model their brand, AppleBottoms needed to find someone to represent for them.

I would have to agree with that comment that it was done a lot more tastefully than I expected. Some women jumped off the deep end, like the leopard-print stripper outfit and the chick that pulled her pants down to show her thong. I thought that it was going to be a lot more scandalous than it was. It could have been a lot worse.

If anyone noticed, the calmest, most down-to-earth chick won the contest. She wasn't droppng it all over the place like the chick with the dreads. She had a good personality, and she came out sexy, yet she wasn't really putting it in everyone's face. Everyone else was acting as if they were trying out for the Hot in Herrrre (remix) video. To me, the best person won (out of those selected).

She'll be a broadcaster for BET . . .Didn't you see The Player's Club. :p

**just jokes**
I have more to say but I am finally about to leave work after 11.5 hours.

I'm not so much offended as I am annoyed. I am truly annoyed that women continue to subject themselves to this kind of objectification (sp? is that a word?). We need to be smarter than that. I don't care what color the girls are. Women need to step it up and stop taking this kind of nonsense from men just becuase they promise money or fame in return. If some of these women spent as much time doing for themselves as they did waiting for some man to do for them, they would be where they want to be already.

A Man Is Not A Plan.

cjoanell 11-22-2003 08:49 PM

I saw the entire show...... I don't think I approve of how the went about the search, although I understand that they want an everyday girl as a representive... AppleBottom as a name :( don't understand. The concept itself, to me, is the same concept as J.Lo's line and Fubu's line. ... clothes for the everyday woman with curves. I have heard many people approving of how J.Lo's line fits and I own some Fubu clothes and they fit me great.. (I must admit that babygirl has a lot of back:( :( :( :( :( :( ) From the little things I saw the ladies model, I haven;t seen anything too impressive. I guess we'll have to wait to see

9dstpm 11-24-2003 11:23 PM

I watched it strictly because there was nothing else on Saturday morning after SpongeBob went off. I thought it was a shame that those girls were shaking their hind-parts and thought that it was a good way to get ahead in life as opposed to going to college and actually working. Then my other issue is that all the girls he picked were stick thin and had long hair. To me, this is not your everyday average girl. I would have like to have seen some sistahs who wear a size 20 and have not so long hair that looked pretty together.
