Sorors,

Greek Family,

I have sad news. Today, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.'s last living founder, Most Honorable and Beloved Founder, Soror Vivian White Marbury has passed away. This is a time of great greif for my sorors and myself. I just wanted to take the time to let the Greek Family know that we have lost a beautiful and strong woman. Please accept my condolences on the loss of your Founder and sister. It is truly a sad day for all Greeks when a strong and dedicated woman such as her.

blu_theatrics 07-31-2000 02:25 AM

Hello all and thank you so much for your caring commments.

We were blessed to have her here for 100 year! A century! Who can blaim God for deciding that it was time that he had a chnce to meet this wonderful woman. We have had her here with us for a long time and we were truly blessed.

I know we will all miss her, but like it was said earlier it is even more important for us to now continue to live out her legacy through the new ladies we meet and contact and those around us everyday

Also I have received an e-mail stating that we all go to work, school, etc. dressed completely in Blue and/or Gold and wear our official badge ( only with correct
clothing) or a pin or a yellow tea rose so that the world know even with a small gesture like this one that she meant the world to us.

GREEK FAMILY &
FRIENDS,
I want to thank you all for your words of encouragement and sympathy at this time. I personally appreciate it and I know my sorors appreciate it also.
Personally I am still in shock at this occurance. This time of year is a time of reflection for myself as my one year anniversary in SIGMA approaches. I have been taking the time to remember, rethink and relearn all that was taught to me during my journey into SIGMA LAND. With this sad occurance, I encourage my sorors to use this time for personal and organizational reflection also.
For the GreekChat Family as a whole, all of your love and support will live in my memory. For all our bickerings, debates and jokes, I'm happy to see that we can also pull together in a time of need (but then again, was there ever any doubt? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif)
Once again, I must thank you for all your support. I love my Greek Family and you have all shown me true Greek Love.

Sincerest Thank You's
Soror Saunders

Please accept my deepest condolences and sympathy at this trying time. Her passing makes your hard work to emulate what she set forth even more significant.

Actually, I just got back from dinner and I saw an SGRho all dressed in blue and gold, right down to her sneakers. Had I read this post before dinner, I would have offered my condolences personally.

Once again, God Bless Ms. Marbury as she goes to meet God.

I would just like to say that the loss of my soror touched me so deeply I feel it necessary
to honor her with my pledge story.
I attend a HWU and I also attended a majority white high school so I'm almost used to
racism. Anyway when I first came to college I didn't know anything about BGLO's. But
whenever some one asked me what I wanted to pledge I would say AKA or Delta because
that was what every one else was saying and I didn't want it to seem like I was ignorant of greekdom. But when I researched all four sororities on the net and I found I identified the most with the
founders of Sigma Gamma Rho. Growing up in the rual south I've been called every thing
from the N word to a coon. So I knew what these ladies must have went through when
they founded us. I didn't let the fact that SGRho was smallest taint my decision either. All
the sororities on the yard were small (except Zeta Phi Beta they were the largest with
about 35) (Alpha Kappa Alpha second with 6 Alpha Kappa Alpha Delta Sigma Theta third
with 5 and SGRHo 4th with 3). No lie!!!
I guess my childhood has enabled me to look over what is said on boards about my
organization. Because being hated after you pledge in no way compares to being hated
before you were born. So I can take any stereotype dished and any put down they give because why should I get mad if I don't fall into that stereotypical image. I just laugh it off because if I cared about what people said I wouldn't be apart of any sorority especially on my yard.

To my sorors stay strong and blue-tiful and everything else will fall into place.

Yours Blue-ly
The Rhotorious K.I.M.

It is with great sorrow as well as joy that I write this brief message. I am a new member and soror of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority,Inc. I did my intake process Spring 2000 semester with one other younglady. Like most we looked for the organization/sisterhood that was most representative of us. I can honestly say that I thoroughly sought out and can proudly hold my head up to be a SGRHo.
My heart is heavy knowing that one of our beloved founders, sorors, and mentors has gone on. Her job though has been fulfilled and truly her legacy through Sigma Gamma Rho is recognized and realized. She was a triumphant individual and a beautiful woman full of strenghth and wisdom. I unfortunately did not have the opportunity to meet Soror Marbury but I have a deep love for her spirit and struggle. She indeed was a Legend. She will be grately missed.

I am overwhelmed with the outpouring of Greek Love over the loss of our remaining founder Soror Marbury. I am new and was looking forward to possibly seeing her. Right now I am just thankful that she and 6 other intelligent, young black women thought enough together in troubled times to start an organization for me to feel compelled to join!!!

The Brothers of ALPHA PHI ALPHA Fraternity, Inc. would like to send condolences to you and your entire sorority on such a great loss.

In your time of bereavement, may oncoming Sigma Gamma Rho sorors honor the traditions and uphold the objectives of your illustrious organization. May your sorority flourish with each day as you concentrate on what was set in motion at Butler University in 1922.

God will bless your organization even though it has suffered a great loss in the passing of a trend setter (Founder Marbury): A woman who endeavored to found a prestigious (sorority) movement in African-American livelyhood.
