Men With Braids
Is it me or does it seem like every man out there has corn rows? I hope it's just me.
I was in church yesterday and I noticed that a lot of the men (young and old) were wearing braids. Ladies, do you find this attractive? |
Hello laides,
Hope you don't mind if I put my little 2 cents worth in. For me I am not feeling the braids on any man, be he young or old. I guess I'm just from the old school. But to each his own. ------------------ Peace KL |
Being from the south, it's kinda the norm these days and yes on some men I find it quite attractive. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif
Now, if it's coupled with sagging pants, the aroma of weed, and 30 gold teeth, then nothing could turn me off more! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif |

Now I think braids on a Black man (and yes I have seen them on white men http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif in a word, scary...just my opinion) are the sexiest thing since locks (I guess I should add, that I LOVE well cared for locks http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif). I should clarify and say cornrows or twists...cuz as natural as I wanna be, I can't bear to see a bruh w/ individual box braids...it hurts http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif... |
I don't like them. Never have and probably never will.

ICK!!
Make it stop, please!! (I guess I'm from the old school too) Sorry for the drama, but I can't STAND the nonsense.... |

I just hate to think about a brother sporting the braids and a tux...OH MY GOSH! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif...that one is for DO NOT.COM http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif HA! HA! |
Pardon me for butting in... Personally, I am not drawn to braids. Twists and locks look better. If one is going to have dreads, twists, braids, etc. KEEP IT NEAT (and properly oiled)! Fuzzy braids, twists 2 months over due, and uncomed/unbrushed hair for that matter is not cute.

Locs: Yes Dreads: Eh Clean Cut: Ok... Braids: No No No!!!! |
No, I can't say I find it attractive, either.
I like the clean cut look. |
This is an interesting topic. Many of my younger frat brothers are sporting this look or are considering this twist thing. I can let the young brothers slide but to see a 35 year old man with corn rolls is crazy. I don't think the look is professional -- well, unless he is in the rap business (lol).
One more thing - Alpha men by most standards are VERY distinguished and maybe conservative some would say. In this regard, those seeking membership to the frat with contemporary hair styles often give me the impression that they don't fit the mold. ------------------ "The World Belongs to Those Who Care Deeply, Who Dream Broadly, and Who Work Steadfastly." |
Braids are an absolute no no. Why would I want to date a guy with hair longer than mine. We can go to the salon together and talk about hair care. NOOOOOOOOOO!!!
|
I really doesn't matter as long as he looks good and they fit that guy. Some guys can get away with it and others can't.
Oh yeah, I found it funny how some women said that they don't find it attractive (braid/cornrows/etc.) on men, but when some of the males in the other topic stated they don't find women with short/natural/whatever type of hairstyle attractive some women questioned their preferences. Could this be a double standard? |

Maybe. In my opinion the whole "long, pretty hair" thing is very deep rooted in our culture. You can't deny that folks have been talking about nappy vs. straight and happy for a LONG time now. The braids on men issue is fairly new and not a heated. It's not as "historical" as natural/short hair on women debate. Also, it's hard to put the two side by side because braids only alter the STYLE of the hair, not the TEXTURE. Much of that last thread where we talked about hair was directed towards the texture of it. Braids are Braids. However, not all natural hair looks one way so how can you say you don't like ANY natural styles? That's what I love about it. There are all kinds of gradients/textures. With braids and perms it's either flat/curled in some way or BRAIDED. Hell, I don't like cornrows period. I never did my little sister's hair that way when I was living at home, and I never wear them unless I'm going to bed. [This message has been edited by Poplife (edited January 23, 2001).] |
braids...it depends http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
locs...a definitely yes. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif the snoop doggy dog pimped out perm hair look....i think not. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif |
Nope, not feeling the braids. I like conservative, clean cut guys.

I felt the same way until I saw Latrell Spreewell of the NEw York Knicks http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif |
I have mixed feelings about this one. Corn rows look good on most younger guys (well below 30) who keep the style up, but is terrible on older guys, and guys who make no effort to maintain the style. I'd prefer a guy with short hair.
Speaking of braids, I wonder about the guys who get designs in their hair and beads on the end of their braids. Now it may be cute for a 2 year old, but a 21 year old male...I don't think so. Also, once the braids start to get fuzzy, it is time to get them redone. If a guy knows that he won't be able to keep this style up...he need not try in the first place. Case in point: my boyfriend. About a year ago my boyfriend started growing out his hair. He started getting it braided every couple of weeks. It looked very nice on him because he kept it up. A few more months went by and he started slacking off. He either wouldn't get the hair rebraided or would walk around with this "interesting 'fro." http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif Reminded me of the song off of Erykah Badu's first CD "you betta pick yo afro daddy...cause it's flat on one side." http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif As much as I loved him and he loved his hair we both knew that it was time for it to go. He cut it ALL off right before the new year, and in my opinion, is looking better than ever. |

Many young brothers are sporting "gold" teeth. I have seen some young ones in various orgs with the "bling bling" ...oh my goodnes! |

not to go off on a tangent...but what is it about gold and platinum teeth???? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif
being from the south that is something i will never get use to. MaMaBuddha _________________ imaginer un métro rempli avec les anges tombés... |
It's funny, because I was talking to my mother about cornrows yesterday...I personally don't care for them...they just have this...thuggish look to them.
Dreads: I love them, as long as they aren't what I call "thug dreads" (the ones that look like a big clump of hair sticking out of the side of one's head) Twists: I love them...IMHO, I've never seen any unkempt twists. Gold/Platinum teeth--No No No No No. I think they are soooo nasty. Any man with those in his mouth gets a "F" in appearance from me!!! Permed Hair--Oh no. No man of mine will have permed hair...I can't imagine him asking me to pick up a box of Optimum Care for him when I go to the beauty supply store, or him sitting next to me in the salon!! HATED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Miss. Mocha |
To me, men and braids are associated with negativity, so I don't care for them. But have Y'all seen the man in the Changing Faces video? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif I could tolorate that but it would have to be on the DL.

well... i can get with a man who likes to express himself. Indiviuality is usually a plus. Black men can be attractive with ALL KINDS of hair... But, I couldn't see myself long term with a man who wore anything BUT a low-college-cut kinda thing. I don't like how the others feel (i.e. dreads, afros, PUFFS)... But braids are generally a no-no.
|
I like braids on men*not all of them* I think (sometimes) its sexy!!!

You Ladies are W I L D!!!!
Am I to understand that if a brother has corn rolls, twist, etc. and is attractive then you will give him some play - at least on the down low? (LOL LOL LOL LOL) ------------------ "The World Belongs to Those Who Care Deeply, Who Dream Broadly, and Who Work Steadfastly." |

African folk are always creative with the comb...it's nice to see the flow of my brethren in their creative phases....
However, MY preference is for the clean cut. Men with braids...UGH http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif I saw this grown man, like 50+ with braids sitting in front of me in church last Sunday...and I was struck by it....yes STRUCK..stricken to think he was too old to be profiling that do! I just am not feeling the braid trend. I think well kept locks look good. But nothing but a clean cut brother with intellect and a fire for God gets my attention! Do ya feel me? |
I know I am a bit late, but I have to agree with the majority this time. I do not care for any kind of braid on a man. I have yet to see a man who looks attractive with braids. Course, I haven't seen this changing faces video... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif
I love locs. I like fros (as long as they see a pick each and every day). I like the clean cut look also. As for perms, on the average man NO! But I have to admit that I always thought that Snoop was pretty cool, while being secretly bitter because his hair is just so darn pretty. Since I just finished the hour-long process to braid the hair of each of my daughters, I can safely say "braids belong on girls, period". Whenever I see a man or young boy in braids, my first thought is "hood-rat". Sorry if I've caused offense, but I'm definitely old-school on this one. Stop the madness -- ain't nothing wrong with looking respectable.
