Working on Holidays

Anyone here like working on holidays? Tomorrow I get to work 6 hours, and get paid double-time because of Veteran's Day :D

I've been stoked since I found that out since my paycheck is gonna rock...

bafromkc 11-10-2003 05:14 PM

getting paid double-time rocks.

lovelyivy84 11-10-2003 05:15 PM

what is this overtime that you speak of?:(

Only my department was in today. I find it impossible to work and have been reading instead. I want to go hooooome!

I will also be working a half day on Xmas eve. Once again, what is this half day you speak of?

ZTAngel 11-10-2003 05:20 PM

My company doesn't include Veterans Day as one of our holidays. :(
But, at least I get Thanksgiving Day and the day after off!

sigmagrrl 11-10-2003 05:21 PM

I work in an industry where there is no such thing as a holiday: hospitality....So, I have to work most days others are off, as well as weekends...

I work for the state, so we get all federal and state holidays off. :)

I work every Holiday! Except Chrismas!

Till 2:00 on all of the others. Majors, New Years Day, 4 th of July, Thanksgiving.

When you dont have any family to spend time with, then why not be there.:(

Gives me something to do!:)

This reminds me of a guy I knew in college who did something very clever. He was one of several people in his dorm who worked the front desk. Probably 99% of students go home over the holidays, but the dorms stay open, and that means the desk has to be manned for security reasons. He had to stick around anyway to work on his senior thesis. So, he offered to work desk for the weeks of Christmas and New Year's.

Usually, the deskworker is pretty busy buzzing people in, lending room keys to people who've locked themselves out, lending out keys to various facilities (study rooms, weight room), etc., but with almost everyone gone, all he really had to do was sort the mail. So every morning he brought his laptop down, and all day he sat at the front desk writing his thesis... and got paid time and a half for it.

;)

i only get time and a half for working holidays. too bad veteran's day isnt considered a 'holiday' at starbucks. but at least we still have a lot of holidays to choose from. we are open everyday except christmas.

ThetaPrincess24 11-10-2003 09:11 PM

As a volunteer, I get off the standard holidays, but when I become a nurse/nurse practitioner I'll be happy to work over holidays/be on call and get paid more :) Though that opinion may change once I start having my babies and such......but at the rate I'm going presently, who knows when that will be!

MereMere21 11-10-2003 09:27 PM

working christmas eve, christmas day night, new year's eve, and new year's day night. We get time and a half plus incentive holiday pay. My husband has to work Christmas and New Year's anyway so I might as well work while I have some free babysitters (the parents or in-laws)! The holidays are usually very slow - people don't usually "get sick", for instance, even if they are having chest pain, they won't come to the ER until the holiday is over - like 2 days after x-mas is usually busy.

In TV production, holidays are like any other days. If they're part of your regular schedule, you work them -- often with no additional compensation or comp time.

texas*princess 11-11-2003 10:16 AM

i don't think this counts as working on a holiday for my place of work

i think the only extra-pay holidays are labor day, thanksgiving, christmas, & new year's day

Rudey 11-11-2003 12:36 PM

No days off for me unless both bond and stock markets aren't open which is very few days of the year. I still make more than all of you and feel very good letting you know that. That's why I can afford to buy lots of expensive jeans and baseball cards.

my job gives me 365 days off.

oh did i mention my mom writes the checks?

awesome.

ThetaGrrl 11-11-2003 01:42 PM

I'll be stuck working through the holidays (except Christmas and Thanksgiving), even though all the brokers in my office won't be here... one more reason why it sucks to be at the bottom of the ladder...

Yeah, didn't realize this when I said I would work Christmas Day so my co workers could travel to be with their families. So, now I have to work Xmas day with no benefits. What really ticks me off is that the full time people get double time and a half, and we get our regular $7 an hour. Seriously, I'm sooo sick of this place.

Lil' Hannah 11-13-2003 11:07 AM

My job deals with seasonal work and the summer is our busy season, so we don't get any summer holidays off and we don't get extra pay, however after Labor Day we've gotten a bunch off. The office is closed the week between X-mas and New Year's off, and I was very excited about that until I found out that they take our vacation days for it.

don't even get me started...

KSigkid 11-22-2003 09:55 AM

At both my current job and my new job, I'll have to work when the hospital is open; in other words, most every day. I'll have Christmas off and New Year's Day off, but besides that I'll beat the office.

RioLambdaAlum 01-10-2004 11:57 PM

I like it just cause I get paid more. Sad but true.
