Stupidest Mascots
Less important of a question than what is happening on Fraternity Life but who do you think is the stupidest mascot?
No offense AGD's but squirrels to me are just a nuisance.:( |
:( :( :(

A Duck. Figure it out.

http://www2.hawaii.edu/~sdegala/rush.jpg You don't say that kind of stuff on this board. You've officially been blacklisted by the AGDs. :) |
If all the AGDs on this board took a huge picture with them all wearing that grass skirt, then maybe our Xi friend will apologize?
ETA: Unless there's a huge important part of the ritual that explains why a glo uses it, I think the use of a shamrock is kinda.....different. |

sandy, where's my tshirt??? i haven't received it yet and mai ly hasn't responded to me!! edited to apologize that i've hijacked this thread... but it's because he was mean to squirrels... |
But wait...
Hey I just call them as I see them. I know you don't have a lot of squireels there in Hawaii, and Nutter and Marc and Jim can attest to this one. We have thousands upon thousands. They are kind of a nuisance. Ask Jim about Tanner and his exploits with the squireels and dirty birds. Now those guys are mean! Besides, Im not ripping on them, I'm just expressing an opinion. My sister was an AGD an she knows this.

If you want to talk about different, I guess our symbol or "Mascot" is a severed unicorn head. Thats pretty crazy if you ask me. I did not mean to offend you Sandy. Im sorry if I did. You should come up to UW sometime and then you might understand what Im talking about. Its not like you can ever pet the squirrels. They are pretty quick and hard to catch. Trust me!

Do any GLOs on your campus GO by their mascot name? Some people here commonly say the Wolfpack and the Ducks instead of their greek letters.
|
Unicorns
.. are so 80's and well, let's just say I don't care for them.
Aren't squirrels technically a rodent? Bears are way over used I think, But I have to disagree with what someone here said earlier about winnie the pooh-I think if you are going to have a bear as a mascot-have a specific one-like winnie or paddington. But I do think the mascot should have meaning, not just be cute. |

nobody at VCU uses mascots... I guess ASA with their ladybugs are pretty upforth about it. But we also have AGD, Tri Sig, Phi Sig, Theta Chi, Delta Chi, Theta Delta Chi, Kappa Sig, AKL, and some up-and-comers.... and even POST-greekchat I can only name the sororities' mascots. The fraternities I wouldn't even want to guess at. And I DATED guys in three of them.
|
Hotdamn, you dated a guy with 3? Was he a three peckered billy goat?;)
Sorry AGD but screwills aint to smart, I see them a lot going to work:eek: Pancaked on the street cause they run in front of you!:( OOOOWie! Thank God I did not know an AGD that looked like the Mascot:D Well not even My Ex-wife! LXA does not have a Mascot and dont know of any Fraternitys that do! We are not cute, We are He Men! |
The only bad thing about a squirrel as a mascot is that well meaning but uninformed people are forever buying you "squirrels" that are actually chipmunks! There is a BIG difference between them!
Dee |
On the squirrel subject, I like them :) That is, until they start eating the birdseed :p
Now onto the actual subject...at Rio we have: Zeta Theta Chi: Deer Chi Omega Alpha: Mice Lambda Omicron Psi: Lamb (baaaaaah) Delta Theta: Unicorn Alpha Mu Beta: Fox Fraternities: TKE: Their local is a Lion :) *rowr* Alpha Sig: have no idea AXN: Sheep..oh boy..the worst mascot for a fraternity EVER. *hint hint* I think the unicorn is the worst..especially since their symbol is a rainbow...give the wrong impression I guess. Hell, I don't even really like my own sororities symbols :p |
ThetaxiUW, no offense, but why are all your posts so negative?
Calling someone's mascot stupid??? what's the point, besides just being mean? :( |
Because I have the day off I have time to nitpick!
"STUPIDEST"... that word's just as real as "PREJUDISM," right?

The squirrels at my alma mater can and will attack you!
We also had something called the affirmative action squirrel, but I won't get into that right now. |

I have what I call a "squirrel friend" in my yard! He (or she, I'm not sure how to check) comes to my deck at a certain whistle, and will eat nuts at my feet. He still won't eat them out of my hand, though.
It's a red squirrel and SOOOO pretty!! |
I love squirrels :) they are actually cute wittle rats I think
besides, the Ty beanie baby nuts squirrel has my birthday - Jan 21st :D gotta love that whats up with all the hatred anyway? |

Stan - around these parts there are also the Crows whose letters are Alpha Chi Rho.
Using ANY copyrighted character as an official mascot does not work. That's a big reason I think why ASA has moved away from Raggedy Ann (which was all we used when I was in school, except for our local turtle trees) and gotten into ladybugs. I agree that it should have some sort of meaning and not just be there. |
I like unicorns. There is nothing wrong with the 1980s.

My sister's AXO chapter's mascot was an alligator. I thought that was tight!!
I mean, all the other sororities had thier bears, ladybugs, owls, etc, but when it came down to it, we all know that 'gators would romp on all of em. Are we defining mascots and symbols as the same thing? The snake is featured prominently on the SNu Coat of Arms, as well as badge and candidate pin, but it's not our "mascot" Technically, it's not even a symbol, but makes up parts of our other symbols. At my chapter at A&M though, we took the snake on as our mascot, using it for intramurals and various other things. I know a couple chapters that have had chapter pet snakes too. Kitso KS 361 times my mom was sad that her kids' GLO's had animals like snakes and gators as "mascots" instead of bears or other junk |
Squirrels are cute, but the AGDs on my campus are always sad because when we table each sorority is allowed to put out their mascot, and Alpha Phi uses a bear, and we have a lion as our chapter mascot, so our two orgs' animals usually dwarf their little squirrles... Ne way... wanna talk tough symbols try Phi Sig's Sphinx....
now I would never call it the "Stupidest" mascot, but it is hard to find Sphinx stuff... and it's definitely not "cute" All the paraphanalia that is supposed to have a symbol or Mascot on it... (like the Kappa Key, or Kite for Theta, or Lion for A D Pi) for Phi Sig usually has a rose because they don't want to bother trying to put a sphinx on it... it's just hard to respresent... |

You think bears are overused? Yeah, hi. We're lions. Now, I love lions. They rock @ss. But...overused...
As for cartoon characters, I just don't get it. Especially when your GLO already HAS a mascot. Like....we have Phi Sig on our campus. And I dunno if all Phi Sigs do this or jsut the ones at Muhlenberg, but they use Paddington as their mascot. And I just can't help but think, "C'mon guys, you have a SPHINX! Now that's cool!" As for squirrels: They're more original than lions. ;-) And the squirrels at M'berg could whomp anybody. I've seen them attack students for their fries. Nasty dudes. Wouldn't wanna tangle with them in a dark alley. And I got one to come right to my feet by whistling too...so I guess they aren't all badass ;-) But there was the campus "Squabbit". Poor thing had gotten into a fight (with a cat, or fox, or other squirrel presumably), and had it's tail ripped off to just a lil stump. So when it bounded around, it looked more like a rabbit with short ears. THAT would be a cool mascot..... |
Our local maskot is Thumper Bunny, and in the past, we had trouble with copyrights and what not. But our nickname is still Thumpers. I bet people like Thumpers (Bambi), righty? ;)
Nationally, we have owl, serpent, and cock as our unofficial maskots, since we never really adopt maskot. I like the owl the best, to represent wisdom. Not so sure about the cock though :D No offense, but our Xi friend here just voice his opinion, not to attact AGD, and I am sure he didn't mean to offend anyone. So my friends AGD, do not feel offensed. Everytime I see squirel, I always think of squirel hunting. ;) Don't take it seriously, I like squirel! Yes I agree, lamb as fraternity maskot is not so manly. Baaaa baaaa ... I have a question about turtle. I know it could represents old, you know, long live creature, which is good ... but most people think that turtle is slow, and I'm pretty sure nobody wants to be represented as slow. So why turtle as maskot? |

Some people might think I'm "nuts" for being so defensive of the squirrel, but I think I have every right to be. The animal's a cherished part of my organization, and even if the animal's a nuisance where he's at, I hardly think that that's enough reason to label it "STUPIDEST"...as if there even was a word. |

How the hell can you confuse a squirrel with a chipmunk???? they dont look anything alike!! My chapter has a local mascot of a Bee but it was chosen because we dont have an official national mascot though the Kite is our symbol. The Bee was chosen because the colors of a bumble bee are the colors of Theta but that's it. We have no ritualistic or deeper meaning behind it. |
At least my fraternity's symbol (we officially do not have a mascot) is the mythical Phoenix that rises from the ashes.
Historically, we have had a Phoenix-like existence. From 1845 to 1864, we were a sophomore class society at Yale, with one chapter (Delta at Marietta College, Ohio) as an all-class society. In 1864, the fraternity was suppressed and took the name Delta Beta Xi, until the Yale faculty eventually shut it down in 1872. From 1872 to 1907, Delta kept the light of the fraternity burning until the members of the Yale Masonic Club revived Alpha Sigma Phi at Yale. |
