If you had the opportunity to Moderate...

THIS or any other GC forum:
1. Which forum would you want to moderate?
2. How would you "moderate? (Your "style")
3. What would you implement?

1. Which forum would you want to moderate?

Although it would be an esteemed honor to Mod. this forum yall are doing a great job so I would say the Phi Alpha Delta board
(my Law Fraternity)

2. How would you "moderate? (Your "style")

I would probably characterize it as energetic and inviting to all (Prelaw, Law, and Alum Brothers and Sisters as well as Law, Prelaw, & Alum Prospectives)

3. What would you implement?

1) Questions and Answers about the benefits of membership

2) Open discussions about hazing/ initiation / recruitment/ community service. Although in our District we have great get-togethers and communication where we were able to share ideas (like I really like the Langston chapters 'process' I learned a lot it from my fellow PAD members from Howard Univ. and tried to implement some at my school).

3) I would also like to engage in discussions about a more uniform process across the board.

4) Also posting events. We have a lot of 'famous' members who remain VERY active. It would be nice to know when a Supreme Court Justice brother or Sister is visiting or when prominent attorneys are being hosted as well.
(We have a list serve but it is too huge to keep up with so one central place to check in would be great.)

5) Also a section of accomplishments or achievements would be nice for example when PAD members pass the bar we are invited to attend a swearing in ceremony at the Supreme Court *crossing fingers*, some gets the highest grade in class, makes Moot Ct, or starts their own firm... stuff like that

For the most part the board is pretty dead so I guess the first order of bizz-nezz would be to get the word out there about it. :)

Truly, Soror 2D, after the mess that went on up in here the other day, I have to say that I don't envy the job that you and the other moderators have. I may not have the patience to handle "situations" as gracefully as they have been dealt with.

Me either, and I didn't even see half of what went on! I'm going to go ahead and say my ass would be creating an anonymous screenname to curse out the troll so as not to get my moderator'ship' revoked! :D

1. I wouldn't feel right moderating any other forum than my own organization so this one.

I think that this forum is run right on point. What needs to be discussed is and what should be kept private is. I have been on greekchat for some years now and I remember when the boards were not that active and that we use to have some people getting shut down and regulated because of pure foolishness. I think this forum and all the NPHC forums make it crystal clear that foolishness will not be allowed.

2. My style would be like my classroom, very free to express your self on appropriate topics and discussions. I would have the same ZERO tolerance our moderators have. Since I am a teacher I have to deal with holding my tongue and respectfully dealing with idiots all the time.

3. I would love to have a way just sorors could discuss things but that would require another forum. I would like to see more discussions on the path the NPHC's organizations are taking without peole getting so upset or "overprotective".

1. Delta Blvd.
2. and 3. Nothing different. I think ALL of the moderators do a great j-o-b and with the patience of J-o-b.

i tend to read a lot more of the D9 boards than i actually post - but i have to say the moderating in these particular forums is above par! there is always a "moderating presence," sanity and decorum are maintained, and everybody understands (and for the most part respects) the process - what more can you ask for?

AKA2D '91 04-24-2006 06:29 PM

I am asking because the site could go through some changes and feedback from the "masses" might help the administrator and his team with these changes/upgrades.

squirrely girl 04-24-2006 06:37 PM

oh i see!

well in that case -

i think that it is a great situation when any given forum has several ACTIVE mods who also have a vested interest in the forum (such as being a member of the org or having experience in a particular process like AI or rush)

i also get the impression that the forums with clearly expressed rules and guidelines for posting (and mods who enforce them) tend to have fewer problems - it's even more helpful when these rules are not "open for discussion" and are highlighted at the top of the forum permanently

finally - as simple as this sounds - have mods who actually ENFORCE (and abide by) the TOS and rules/guidelines of the forum. having a mod who starts crap in other forums doesn't do the board as a whole any good and having a mod who lets that crap fly on their particular forum is just as useless...

- marissa

edited to add - this is exactly why i like the D9 forums!

Not much I would add. I think this particular forum is very well moderated. When I see threads that are off the wall, I know its going to be locked. Most of the times, it already has been. I like that becasue it keeps the board drama to a min.

AlphaFrog 04-25-2006 02:18 PM

I think the General Forums need AT LEAST 2 Mods each (in case a Mod goes MIA), with ChitChat & GL having more like 5 or 6. Also, I think each general forum needs at least 2 Mods that aren't buddy-buddy. We are all human, and we don't treat people equally, as much as we try. If you get too many Mods in one Forum who are buddy-buddy, then you have a whole group of people that get away with whatever, and other people that get every other post/thread deleted/locked.

Great job Moderators. I would not want to have to deal with this issues that you all face everyday here.

Check your post count. Check mine.

Now, go read a few ChitChat and GL threads. I was not at all refering to any D9 forums in my post. Hence why I said GENERAL FORUMS TWICE.

Once you have cashed your reality check, then get back to me. Wait, don't get back to me.

PS Please call me classless again, I so love when you do that.

Even though there is a chat feature on here, is it actually used? Are there scheduled or even spontaneous chats? I think that may be nice.

I do understand what you're saying here. I think the mods can still be buddy buddy (that would be difficult not to have that if they're from the same org) but should be able to agree to disagree. Maybe the mod who has seniority in the org, has been on GC longer, etc. should make the final call, but I do get what you're saying. Even with my GC friends, we don't always agree on what should and shouldn't be deleted.

teena 04-26-2006 02:43 PM

All of the D9 threads are well moderated. I think that threads should be edited and not deleted entirely unless absolutely necessary. I would like to see the search modified to include more options, maybe use the google site search. Other than that, GC is great.

I'd appreciate it if you will take your bout to PM. Check the vulgarity at the door. If you want to misspell the curse word, do that. IF YOU CANNOT, LEAVE!

1. APO

2. My style of moderation would be like this: In a nutshell, discussions and debates are welcomed, flames are not.

I will not hesitate to delete a post that is a personal attack or lock a thread that degenerates into a meaningless flame war. The problem I have with discussion boards in general is that people oftentimes don't know how to debate facts without trying to sidetrack folk into baiting them to engage in an all-out flame war. I have learned that this is their way of saying they lost the debate or that their argument is indeed weak. It is also the reason why I choose not to engage in discussion with certain GCers. That is why I am not too wild about posting in the Greek Life forum, but ironically the ones who start the flame wars with me aren't the NIC/NPC folk, but the NPHC members. Actually, ever since I been on GC (6 years), I have never had so much as one beef with any non-NPHC member. Go figure...

Anyhow, flagrant and repeated trolls and flamers I would turn over to the administrator to be banned for being a nuisance. I'm too old for a lot of silly mess.

In a nutshell, my "platform" would be: "You will discuss and debate constructively by debating the facts or opinions derived thereof or you will not discuss here at all".

3. *see next post for "my" response...*

HEAR, HEAR!!

You have essentially said what I would have said about question #3. Couldn't have said it better myself. Folk need to get a thicker skin when on discussion boards. Everyone has an opinion and everyone is entitled to one, member or not. It is a small price to pay for affiliating with a high profile organization.

Fame costs. ;)

1. Since I don't wander too far from home...this one. (I would also like to see a Psi Chi forum for Psychology)

2. My style would emphasize certain basics like: being able to agree to disagree, mutual respect, freedom of speech. This pretty much is what the style is anyway. I would make people feel more welcome to express themselves without retaliation, though. (I know some people's comments warrant strong responses, but to be like that just because I don't like the person is just power-trippin.) There should be a way to get past the past.
I would also make sure people better understood the do's and don'ts. I often see rules broken. I see repeat threads in various forums, for example. So, either I'm unclear of what the rules are, or I'm left to conclude that rules are only enforced on those who aren't in the inner circle.

3. I wouldn't implement anything new. I would just do things a little differently. With the exception of threads that get very long (like the HC threads), I wouldn't close threads unless: people are talking about things they already know they shouldn't be talking about (re: PoW & common sense); people are being disrespectful; or if people are spreading lies, rumors, or other unsubstantiated "facts". If people think a thread topic is stupid, or not worth talking about, they just don't need to respond to it.
I also think the threads where people introduce themselves should be on the top of the forum under the rules since it's pretty much expected before you post.

Disclaimer: I feel I have to include this, unfortunately. This post is not intended to blast anyone. Please do not PM me and ask if I was talking about anyone specifically. The mods asked for feedback. That is the sole purpose of this post.
