Another First for Kitso......

This afternoon i'll be coaching my first ever jr. high girls basketball game.

Thank god i'm not the A team coach. I'd be completely lost, i haven't played basketball since when i was these kids' age. I just kinda follow him around at practice, throw in a couple, "hustle back"s here and there, and try to do whatever he does with the A team with the B team. He seems to actually know his stuff, i just think he'd be a bit more effective if he ran his practices were a bit more structured.

We're loading up the bus at 2:30 and headin out to play the Pine Ridge Thorpes. Go Eagles!

Kitso
KS 361,000 dollars i'm gonna ask for in my football budget, lets see if i get it :D

bethany1982 10-22-2003 12:02 PM

Good luck to you and the girls.

DeltAlum 10-22-2003 01:00 PM

Go Eagles!

mullet81 10-22-2003 01:38 PM

just remember - defense is played with the feet not the hands!!! fouls are bad :)

good luck!!! you'll be great!

sigtau305 10-22-2003 06:02 PM

Good Luck, Kitso.

Lady Pi Phi 10-22-2003 06:14 PM

Good luck!!!

I'm also coaching tonight for the first time ever!! I'm coaching a girls ice hockey teams.

I hope we win and if we don't I hope we don't get laughtered. It's a house league team so I have never seen these girls play excet for 3 of the girls, and I know they are really good, but we'll be missing to of them tonight. :(

Kevin 10-22-2003 09:40 PM

Bro.. I never really had any understanding for what you did.

True props for you.. I substituted for a P.E. class the other day and had kids calling me "coach".

I didn't know what the hell to do. I really would have preferred they call me by my first name. I even suggested it :D

What you're doing up there is great and I can truly appreciate it.

Props.

James 10-22-2003 10:19 PM

Just remember that Statutory is an ugly charge lol.

lifesaver 10-22-2003 11:38 PM

I saw the thread title and thought it was in reference to kitso seeing his skin under all that hair on his back for the first time or something. lol. Just kidding, lol. You know I think you good peeps.

Good luck on the game tonight. You'll do fine as long as your arent planning on wearing those little "Bike" brand short shorts (with the 3 inch inseam) that all the coaches believe gave them super human coaching powers, cause thats all they ever wore and it was a little creapy. Never need to see that much thigh on a man.

wreckingcrew 10-23-2003 01:15 AM

No lifesaver, i'm saving the bike shorts for when i start contact football here at Loneman next fall :D Have i mentioned that i hate you?

Well folks, not a good night for Eagles fans tonight.

The C team comprised of 4 5th graders and 1 6th grader went down to defeat by a score of 40-3. Ouch. But ya know, those girls played hard.

The B team, of 6th and 7th graders fought hard. And despite a T on their Coach :D played a close game and ended up losing by only 3. 30-27. This is my main team to coach, the head coach and i share the C team. Based on tonight's game, next week's practices are going to contain lots of work on defense, positioning, and conditioning. And oh yeah, lay up drills :p

The A team......<shudder> 67-22. Well, um, yeah, at least they didn't quit :D

Pine Ridge School is one of the 2 largest "public" schools on the Rez. Them and Little Wound have about 3 times the amount of students as the others. Loneman, where i teach, and American Horse, where my mom is principal are probably the next two largest.

Tomorrow night the A and B teams are in action again, this time hosting Our Lady of the Lourdes. We should take this one :p

Kitso
KS 361 times after i got my "T" i was hoping that we would either win, or lose by more than 1 :D

bethany1982 10-23-2003 01:20 AM

Sounds like a tough night. A T on the coach... imagine that. Hope the girls had a good time and a good learning experience.

Marching band? I don't think we even HAVE a band. And one of the reasons i agreed to coach Girls BB is because i've at least played BB before.

If i was in charge of a marching bad, we'd just play marchs and do military marching, i.e. the Nationally Famous, Fightin' Texas Aggie Band!

Game 2 of the season was tonight in our gym vs. the Lady Braves of Our Lady of Lourdes. Just B team and A team.

My B team girls picked up right where they left off against league powerhouse Pine Ridge and (wo)man-handled the Lady Braves, to a tune of a 36-8 rout. I was doing regular subbing in and out of the game until the start of the 4th quarter when i turned to my bench and said, ok, y'all are checking in :D I redeemed my T from last night when the other team picked up a T for having 6 players on the court. All of the girls and fans wanted Dez Blacksmith, our team's leading scorer to take the shots(i know, cuz they were very vocal in this assertion) but instead i chose Charlee Running Eagle, who's more technically sound. 2 swishes :D

The A team coach didn't show up, as he informed me at 9am this morning he had to go to a Pow Wow in North Platte, NE. So, i had to try to coach and manage their game without having worked too much with them. We ended up losing a close game 35-33.

I'm going to continue posting these updates, cuz you know what? i'm really excited about this. Tuesday i'm gonna take in my Stereo and get some Jams playing for pre-game warm-ups and let my girls chose a song to run onto the floor to :D

Loneman Eagles "B" Team 1-1.

Kitso

Yeppers. He retired for the second time at the end of last year. I'll give him a year before he comes out of retirement again. Last time it lasted 2 years.

Remember, defense wins games. His teams always had a wicked press.

Game 3 of the season for the Loneman Eagles "B" Team.

The Lady Warriors of Wolf Creek came calling, driving the 15 miles up SD hwy 18 to Oglala and Loneman school.

Dez Blacksmith again turns in a stellar performance as the Loneman Eagles scored after controlling the opening tip and never looked back as they romped over the Lady Warriors 43-10.

One of the highlights of this game came when defensive stud Saige Pourier sent the shot of a girl 4 inches taller up into the bleachers. (ok, so, she just barely blocked it, but cut me some slack, i always wanted to be a sports journalist :) )Man, that girl is a Bruce Bowen in a skirt, putting fear in the hearts of opposing point guards.

I got a laugh about halfway through the third quarter, when the lead was 35-10 and Saige comes to the sideline during a timeout and tells me the other girls are calling one our girls, Sioux Dawn Janis a 'dyke'. Sioux's our equivalent of Ron Artest. I looked at her and was like, is that true? and when she nodded i said, Sioux, all you gotta do is say, "Scoreboard" and point up to it :p

It's so great to hear em laugh at that :D

I had my first parental complaint tonight too. I pulled most of the starters at the start of the first quarter, and wanted to wait to pull Dez by herself so she could get a round of applause from the crowd. Well, one of the parents(of a girl who started and played most of the game) approached me afterwards and said, " i'm ______'s dad and i just would like to know why she came out of the game. That Dez Blacksmith played the whole game and me and some of the other parents were wondering why she doesn't have to come out"

After i got over my inital urge to tell the gentlemen exactly which part of anatomy that he could stick his opinion, i responded very diplomatically and was proud of my response. I replied, "Well sir, last time i checked, I was the coach of this team, not you or the other parents. I determine who plays and how much. If you will notice, EVERY girl on the team got to play tonight, and they got to play in competitive stages of the game, not just mop up. But, if you want to know, your daughter picked 2 quick fouls, so i set her down to cool her off. Later on in the game, she was getting agitated by the other team, so again, i pulled her to settle her down. I sat down the majority of my starters at the beginning of the 4th quarter and at the end was just playing the backups. But, regardless of all that, EVERY girl got to play, and we won by 30 points, so, in MY book, i coached a great game tonight" and walked off.

whew.

Oh yeah, and the A team coach showed up and they lost :) tomorrow night we travel to Rocky Ford. It should be a little tougher going.

Kitso
KS 361 times it feels great when the girls stop the huddle break and make sure i get in there for the, "1,2,3 EAGLES!"

wreckingcrew 10-30-2003 02:12 PM

thanks for all the well wishes.

Well, Wednesday night the Lady Eagles travelled to Rockyford to take on the Lady Raiders, and experienced a first in the young season.

For the first time, all 3 Loneman teams were victorious in their games, the B team rolled as ususal to a 35-17 victory and the A and C teams were also able to win by double digit margins.

All the usual suspects played well, but we did get a scare when Charlee took a finger to the eye. Fortunately, she's gonna be ok.

The coach for the Lady Raiders was exactly the type of coach i never want to be. She spent all three games, shrieking at her players and at the referees for calls. I would have hated to play for a coach like her and that's why i try not to yell at my girls. The more you yell, you either make them incredibly jittery, or you make them tune you out. I think the fact that i hardly got up from the bench(except during time outs, or occasionally to get a player's attention), or hardly raised my voice made her scream louder :p

Either way, the B team is now 3-1 and has a break in action until next wednesday when Wounded Knee rolls into town. Next thursday we have our rematch with league leader Pine Ridge. That game was my girls' only loss of the season, and that was only by 3 points. We'll see if we've improved any since then :D

bethany1982 10-30-2003 02:20 PM

Roll on...

wreckingcrew 11-13-2003 12:52 AM

well sports fans, after a heartbreaking loss to Pine Ridge last week and a couple days off, the Loneman Lady Eagles took to the hardwood this evening for the first installment of the Kitso Family Feud.

The Lady Eagles, coached by Kitso, hosted the American Horse Lady Chiefs whose principal is none other than Momma Kitso.

Try as i might, the game turned into an OU-A&M type bloodbath. I sat my starters the entire 2nd half and called off the press and we still walked out with a 59-4 victory. Momma Kitso wasn't too happy, looks like i'm gonna be getting coal from her for Christmas.

Tomorrow afternoon we travel to Porcupine and then are off until next Tuesday. Right now we're 4-2, and would be seeded either 2 or 3 when the conference tourny rolls around. Barring a major upset, we should go at least 3-1 in our final four games and hopefully avoid playing Pine Ridge again until the second round of the tourney. Hopefully by then i can come up with a way to beat the Lady Thropes.

Kitso

LOL! What did she expect?

wreckingcrew 11-19-2003 02:55 PM

Well, we've had 2 games since i posted last, i jetted right to PA after the last one.

Last Thursday we played one of our closest games of the season, a 51-19 "squeaker" at the home gym of the Porcupine Lady Quills. Ok, now, i've been on record as saying that i think Big Red of WKU is the ugliest mascot ever. I stand corrected. The Porcupine's mascot was the sorriest thing i've ever seen. I've seen prouder looking porcupines squished on the side of Hwy 18 up here.

Last night we again took to the road to take on the Crazy Horse Lady Chiefs. Before the game, their PA announcer sang the national Anthem, in Lakota. I'll tell ya what, that was freakin awesome. My girls again were victorious running to a 54-10 score. The A team had more a fight on their hands and scratched back from a 30-24 deficit to post a 36-34 victory. It was a great game all around.

We have 2 more games @ Red Cloud and home against Little Wound before the B team tournament the week after Thanksgiving.

All i gotta do is find a way to beat Pine Ridge in the tourney and we'll be set.

Get Ready y'all for December Madness!!!

Today i'm leaving at one to go coach our second game in the Bigfoot Conference Girls B Team Tournament. Our first game was Tuesday, and pitted us against the Wolf Creek Lady Warriors in a rematch of our first home game of the season.

I will just say this, the refereeing was atrocious. Now, i was raised to be a player and coach that didn't let the officiating take me out of my game. Up here, it's a whole other story. The other coach intimidated the officials so much, that as soon as we got the ball across half court, he'd start crying, "3 seconds, 3 seconds, 3 seconds" and they'd call it!

Finally after one call, i said really loudly, (so that my mom heard me in the lobby) YOU DON'T HAVE TO CALL IT JUST BECAUSE HE TELLS YOU TO! That, coupled with my frustration at having to yell at the top of my lungs to get a time out warranted me a warning for a T. When they came over to tell me, i responded with, I'll take a T, if you guys stop letting him dictate your calls.

Anyway, due to the shoddy officiating, Dez Blacksmith, one of our best players and Sioux Dawn Janis, our offensive leader, both had 3 fouls at halftime. I put them both in to start the second half with us guarding a 5 point lead. Dez fouled out halfway into the 3rd and Sioux picked up her 4th foul, making me pull her out. This lead to a 8 point Wolf Creek run and gave them a 7 point lead to start the 4th quarter.

Before i put Sioux back in, we huddled, and i could tell the girls were ready to quit because of the Dez situation. They all really think she's the whole team. I took a time out and pulled them away from the bench. I looked at em and was like, "y'all having fun? and smiled :D This is what it's all about, this is when real champions play, not when they're up by 20, but when they're challenged. Y'all can win this as a team, and we're bigger than one player, no matter how good she is. Now go out there, have fun, and lets win this deal."

Led by Sioux's 7 points in the quarter, we were up by 1, with 20 seconds left. i called another time out and told them not to foul. With 10 seconds left, Saige picked up a reach-in foul and put the W. Creek girl on the line for a 1 and 1. She missed the first and sioux got the rebound. Me and my asst. Melissa(Dez's mom) were screaming, HOLD THE BALL, HOLD THE BALL!! At 4 seconds, sioux went to pass to saige. Now, i swear, that ball lofted through the air and the entire gym seemed to suck in it's breath together. A Wolf Creek girl intercepted it, put it on the floor, and went to shoot, but, as she was falling back with the ball in her hands, the buzzer sounded and we won the game 33-32.

Jeez, i have never been so nervous in my entire life. :D

With our win, we advanced to today, to play the Little Wound Lady Mustangs. They were seeded 2nd and we were seeded 3rd. This could be our toughest oppostion all season. I need all you GCers that read this to cross your fingers for us, we need it. Hopefully i'll be reporting back tonight with good news. Regardless, win or lose, we'll play again friday for either the championship or 3rd place.

Kitso
KS 361 times i thought, crap, my whole coaching reputation rides on this tournament

polarpi 12-04-2003 08:01 PM

Fingers are crossed right now for you and your team...best of luck!

And I think the speech you gave to your team was just perfect....now, if only other coaches would have your same philosophy!

wreckingcrew 12-04-2003 10:28 PM

Well Sports Fans, it was a great inaugural season of coaching for Kitso and the Loneman Eagles. I have some great girls and they've played their hearts out all year. I was hoping today's game wouldn't be another one point affair like last night, and i certainly got my wish. Not to take anything away from the Little Wound Lady Mustangs, they're a great team.......

I just hope they enjoy playing for 3rd place while me and my girls are kicking it in the Championship game against Pine Ridge!! :D Seriously, at the point when i put my subs in, we were leading by 13 and ended up punching our ticket to the Big Show with a 7 point victory.

I'm soooo freakin' excited right now! Our rematch is tomorrow at 4 o'clock for the whole ball of wax. You people don't understand, i could be the worst damn PE teacher ever, but if i can beat Pine Ridge, they'll rehire me year after year. so far, we've been the closest to them, with our 3 point defeat early on their smallest margin of victory.

So, thanks to those that crossed their fingers, i'm gonna have to ask y'all to do that for me again, tomorrow at 4 pm M.S.T. MMM, i think i feel a Shiner Bock night coming on.

Kitso
