I'm going to some cob/cor events this week
I was thinking of trying informal rush next semester, but I found out that this week one of the sororites here at tech is having some events this week, so I'm excited and a little nervous. My greek experiences so far haven't been the greatest. I've finally decided that I really do want to have a place to belong, and to hopefully be a part of greek life. My freshman yr. I tried formal rush, and was cut by all of the sororites, for reasons unknown to me, ( I didn't have any recs though) no one in my family has been greek that I know of, and I didn't know anyone that had gone greek. I decided to check into some orgs. the second semster that yr. and check into informal rush, and did. I got a couple of invites, but they were weeks apart, and the week before one of the events I went to check into a service org. that seemed really cool. The service org. pretty much promised to give me everything I was looking for from greek life. The first events for the sorority stuff that I went to was nice, but I'm on the quiet side and felt I didn't really get to know too many members there, and was so awed by how nice the house was, and how friendly the recruitment chair was to me, on making sure I felt welcomed. I wasn't sure what to do when I got a bid from them, because the serivice groups pinning stuff was that weekend if I wanted to join and the other sorority's stuff didn't start until a couple weeks from then. I was calling my mom everyday not sure about things, and she told me to talk to the people in charge of rush with all groups, and follow my heart. I was so confused on sorority stuff, I was worried what If i realize I don't fit in, and how expensive dues are... , and with the promises from the other org. on them being so great, I went with that. I had a good time my pledge semester, and then things with that org. seemed to fall apart my first semester as an active, I decided I didn't agree with a lot of things this organization did, and how the promises I was told of were empty ones. I decided to try spring rush again last yr. and had a great time , but my grades were really bad.. so I think that's what hurt me then, I've been working on my grades since, and would have done formal rush in the fall, but my gpa was still needing some improvement and still does, and I hope if things work out with me in a sorority , I could benefit from study hrs. and sisters helping me in my weak areas of study. I'm keeping an open mind and hoping for the best, I wrote an e-mail to the panhellenic advisor to let the sororites that are still having events to contact me. I guess just wish me luck...

Good luck!

Best wishes, raiderchic. I understand how complicated and crazy rushing and all college decisions can be. Your mom's advice holds true in all things: Follow Your Heart. If you feel that a GLO can bring something special to your life, keeping going for it. I am, and I graduated two years ago! Remember that academics are the main priority though. Let us know how things go for you.

COB is Continuous Open Bidding. It is a time other than formal recruitment when chapters may accept new members.
The rules for COB (or COR -- Continuous Open Recruitment) vary from campus to campus. At Texas Tech this year all groups are being allowed to COB until they have 165 members, so lots of groups are holding informal events -- like the ice cream social that raiderchic is going to -- in order to meet and possibly accept new members. COB is often preferred by potential new members because the atmopshere is much more relaxed and "real" than formal recruitment. |
Hooray!
Good luck to you raiderchic482! Be sure to fill us in on all the details. I hope you find your Greek home. :)

Good luck, Raiderchic! Which chapters are you COBing?

Hey girls, well I just got in from the events.... I was a little late to the social and got my ice cream and on we went to play a couple of silly games. It was flag football night so we were invited to go watch , so I went... , I wish I could have gotten to talk a little more to some of the girls, but there's the next couple days for that.I'm a quiet girl... So far they seem really nice & I like them, as of now I'm just going to one groups cob events no invites for any others as of yet... , I saw a girl I knew that's in another sorority that lived on my floor freshman yr. and talked to her for a few min after the game , she wished me luck . :0) I'm excited about tomorrows event , going to the drive in movies! If my spanish class permits.. ugh it's a night class... kind of overlaps the time when we are supposed to meet @ the lodge... so hopefully I can make it, if not , then I'm def. going to pj night on thurs. , well that's all for now.

the drive in
I had so much fun last night at the drive in, I'm soo glad my class got let out early. We had pizza and sodas before we left, so I got to know some more girls a little bit, I like how everyone seems really sweet and down to earth , some of the girls are really funny. I could see myself here. Tonight is pjs & friends... so I'm excited about meeting more girls... and having some fun! I was still on the quiet side last night, but still had a blast, we saw School of Rock it was really cute, and it's been a looong time since I've been to a drive- in. I'm really glad lubbock got one this yr. Thank you ladies for all your support & advice it means a lot to me ! @---}-----

last night of cob events ....
Hi everyone,
Well last night was fun as well, it was pj night and friends eventhough there was only oh say about 5 of us at the most that wore them, haha. I went with a friend that's in the group and we got there a little late, saw half of friends , had hot dogs, and I got to talk to a few more of the girls. The event didnt' last long, once friends was done and some girls had been eating the girl in charge of the events for this week said we were free to go whenever. I went to a meeting briefly for a service org. that i'm in it's really small, but we've gotten a few new members this semester, and I noticed that a few girls were wearing shirts, and I talked to my friend that's the pres. before I left after dropping off some stuff, so I could make it to the lodge and before everyone left for the night from there, she asked them about the sorority, and let them know that I was going through rush and that I'm a really sweet girl. When I was leaving the lodge I saw them , and waved. My friend said that the girls thought I was nice, so I hope that's good. I also talked to a girl in one of my classes, and she let me know i could borrow notes from the other stuff in our major, and she was really nice. I'll know by monday the latest on what's going on with cob. Last night was the last event for the week... I really like them a lot, but I'm scared of getting crushed so I don't want to get my hopes up a lot... , I've been having dreams of sorority stuff the past couple nights, I'm like haha I never dream much , I must really want this bad.... , I'll let ya'll know as soon as I do. anxiously waiting.... |
Fantastic! Looks like everything's going well.
(I know whatcha mean about waiting-when I COBed, Monday seemed ages away!) |
Good Luck!! Sounds fantastic.
I understand why you wouldn't want to broadcast where you are COBing at. Can anyone tell us which groups are participating in COB at Tech? |
The straight stuff (from a Tech advisor)
Quote:
I've stated before that Texas Tech's Panhellenic is allowing all groups to COB up to 165, so *most* groups at Tech have opportunities available. Some groups have many more positions available than others. All groups are excited to have the opportunity to fill their houses with great women prior to next year's recruitment. Panhellenic hopes that all chapters will come back with similar chapter sizes. It is my understanding that most Tech sororities are picking up members here and there -- not by hosting special events. That being said, two or three are, indeed, hosting a series of organized events like the ones Raiderchic is going to. There is no formal COB or Panhellenically organized informal recruitment at Tech. So it's a free-for-all. Who really knows who is doing what? That's kind of how Panhellenic is at TTU -- and I don't necessarily feel that it is a bad thing. I can only tell you what I know about my sorority: Alpha Phi. We are very close to the maximum allowable membership at this time. We are taking our time filling the select opportunities we do have available. We are not hosting any formal COB events. There are other Tech sorority members on the boards who may post information about their chapters if they feel like sharing that information. * If you are wondering just what groups are at Texas Tech, here they are: Alpha Phi, Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Chi Omega, Delta Gamma, Delta Delta Delta, Zeta Tau Alpha, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Delta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Pi Beta Phi and Chi Omega. |
sounds like you had a good, productive time thursday. maybe good news by monday? that would be cool.
|
It sounds like you have had a really good week :) Im wishing you the best for Monday! I hope everything goes well.
