Cavities/Fillings

OK, random question: How many of you have NO fillings?

My husband went to the dentist yesterday and came home upset that some of his fillings had to be redone. :( He's suggested that I visit this dentist because "some of your fillings might need to be redone too." When I told him I had no fillings, he was incredulous! "How did you get through your entire childhood with no cavities??"

Is it really that unusual to be an adult with no fillings?

KillarneyRose 10-16-2003 03:18 PM

aephi alum, I don't have fillings either but I understand that people with perfect choppers like us are pretty rare :D

Also, I never needed braces, and I never had to have my wisdom teeth removed because I never GREW any (my husband says that's freakish; I prefer to think of myself as exceptionally evolved)

GeekyPenguin 10-16-2003 03:22 PM

I too have no cavities/fillings. My mom was a dental hygienist (well, still is, but doesn't do that anymore) so when I was little I had sealants galore and had my teeth inspected every single night to make sure I brushed and flossed well enough. I thought it was a pain in the ass then but now it's awesome to be able to laugh at all my friends who always need fillings. The worst dental work I ever had was getting a tooth filed down. I'm esp. grateful for it since in a few years I will be in grad school with crappy insurance, so that's one less thing I'll have to worry about!

 I hate you all!

adpialumcsuc 10-16-2003 03:28 PM

My husband doesn't have any fillings...and he isn't the best and cleaning his teeth. He is just lucky.

I on the other hand have 2 and a tooth that broke that is capped.

aabby757 10-16-2003 03:29 PM

I was about 30 years old before I had any fillings. And, my dentist told me he filled the tooth because I had a whole and it wasn't because I had a cavity.

I don't know if he was trying to spare my feelings or not. My dad has no fillings.

Wonder if it's genetic?

Supposedly there was flouride in the water I drank when I was young but I thought all water had flouride in it.

Had all four wisdom teeth taken out though.

Greekgrrl 10-16-2003 03:31 PM

I hate you all.

I have 10 fillings, 2 root canals, both of which need crowns, three more wisdom teeth to be pulled, and one more filling to go.

Weak teeth suck.

bethany1982 10-16-2003 03:32 PM

No fillings or need for braces. I have not have any wisdom teeth either... LOL! My mom has perfect teeth, so it may indeed be genetic.

Okay, I have about 7 dentists in my immediate and extended family. Some people just get lucky or have some genetic edge that gives them no cavities, or, if you had sealants galore as a child, this will help too.

ZTAngel 10-16-2003 03:44 PM

I've never had fillings.

I did wear braces.

I think it's all in your genetics. I come from a family with very strong gums and teeth. My parents have only a few fillings and sister has never had cavities.

Mr. ZTAngel brushes and flosses twice daily and he's had like 10 cavities. He also had to have a root canal last year (he's 23!). His whole family is the same way.

OrigamiTulip 10-16-2003 03:48 PM

I had many fillings in my baby teeth, but none in my adult teeth, which my parents had sealed. I also never needed braces. My dental oddity is that I only have 3 wisdom teeth since the one on my lower left never developed.

I have the same thing :) 3 wisdom teeth :)

ThetaPrincess24 10-16-2003 04:01 PM

I'm 24 and never had a cavity/fillings.

I did however have two wisdom teeth pulled(they cut through on my right side) and had the two on the left cut out.................horrific experience......but five friends took care of me so it was all good :) PLUS i lost 4 pounds out of that ordeal too :)

aephi alum 10-16-2003 04:58 PM

It's good to know I'm normal! ;)

I don't think it's genetic - both my parents have fillings and crowns.

I never needed braces either, but I did have to have all 4 wisdom teeth extracted... that was no fun. :(

AUDeltaGam 10-16-2003 05:04 PM

No cavities or fillings because I had sealers put on my teeth when they were adult teeth :D But I did have 4 wisdom teeth removed :(

krazy 10-16-2003 05:35 PM

I have them... you jerks...

J/K

I have suffered many an hour in the dental chair on account of cavities. I take great care of my chomper too... I brush very well, 2 or 3 times a day, floss, and everything??? I asked my dentist if I should stop drinking soda, etc. He told me that those foods cause less of a problem than foods that stick to your teeth, like bread/pretzles. food for thought.

CutiePie2000 10-16-2003 06:59 PM

Coke is very bad for your teeth.

smiley21 10-16-2003 07:00 PM

i am 21 and NEVER had a cavity!! *knock on wood*

The ironic thing is that my husband is absolutely obsessive with brushing and flossing and going to the dentist every 4 (not 6 like everyone else) months and gets a lecture every time he goes about flossing properly. I, on the other hand, once went 2 1/2 years between dental appointments and when I finally showed up was commended on what great shape my teeth were in.

MeLikey 10-16-2003 09:52 PM

I absolutely hate going to the dentist! But luckily, I have had no cavities either. However, I did have braces for 2 years or so (was borderline, didn't really need them, but I could have used the extra help so got them), and I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed a few summers ago... they never bothered me though, I only found out they should be removed because the dentist saw them.

AGDee 10-16-2003 11:03 PM

I had my first cavity at 21.. two more at age 22. None before that and none since! I attribute it to reaching the legal drinking age...

goldendelta 10-16-2003 11:15 PM

I have no cavities! I did have to wear braces though. Good thing too cause I got hit in the bottom jaw with a softball once. All my bottom teeth moved over but with the braces they moved back in two days. I also have only one wisdom tooth that doesn't look like it will ever come in. (Knocks on wood.)

ztawinthropgirl 10-16-2003 11:19 PM

I have 2 fillings but they came before my sealants were put on my teeth. The 2 fillings I have though are porcelain. The silver (a.) doesn't stay in my mouth and (b.) I hate the way the silver looks. I have braces. I have had mouth surgery to remove the freenum from under my tongue.

The freakish thing about my mouth is that I had 6 wisdom teeth. Two grew in that were perfectly healthy. The other 4 are still embedded in my gums and I have to have them extracted soon. The two that grew into my mouth normally had to be pulled so I could have the braces put on my teeth.

kappaloo 10-17-2003 01:17 AM

I never have had a cavity! But then again - I haven't got to the dentist since age 19 (going on 4 years now) because I'm a dirt poor students and my parents won't pay for it :(

lifesaver 10-17-2003 04:23 AM

Geez

I have spent about 5 hours in the Dentist chair for fillings and 2 Root canals this week alone.

I have an assload of dental work left oo. My dental benefits are maxed out this year. They reset in January tho and I should be able to get a big chunk of the work I need done then. I have never had dental insurance till now and So I have a lot of work to be done. I have always brushed my ass off and thought I had cavities becasue I am a bad person. lol. Turns out its becasue of my asthma. Those inhalers (I have been using since 1986) are really bad for your teeth. Who knew?

I nam just glad to be getting it all redone.

smiley21 10-17-2003 05:04 AM

no cavities but other dental work is another story. i did have braces for a year. on a second attempt, i got all of my wisdom teeth pulled when i just turned 20. i say second attempt cause when i was 16, i was scared of going under- at the very last minute (i was in the dentist chair) i screamed bloody murder and pushed the dentist away from me. my mom was pissed!! i was grounded for the weekend for humiliating her.
getting my teeth pulled was funny. i couldnt not feel a thing on my swollen, medicated mouth. it is not cool to be high for a day. that is the only time you'll see me on drugs.

CatStarESP4 10-17-2003 07:34 PM

I never had a cavity until I was bearly 19. I was devastated when the dentist told me that I had one small cavity. When I got home, I was crying! A perfect record blemished! Oh well, I hadn't had another one since!

Me too-- only 3 wisdom teeth.
I only have one filling, tiny cavity when I was 17. I am very anal about my teeth. I brush minimum 5 times a day--and I am a FREAK about the whiteness of my teeth. Everytime I go to the dentist I ask about whitening-- he laughs and tells me to get over it, my teeth are already as white as they can be.

Baby teeth were sealed (I can't remember it, but my dental records say it loud and clear). I have one cavity that is filled in with a composite instead of metal. No braces, either. My sister is the same way. My wisdom teeth came in perfectly.

I know I'm extremely lucky to come from a family that has impeccable dental health. My father is the type to brush his teeth after a dental cleaning--"'cause they just don't do it good enough."

Mr. AXO_MOM_3 is the same way - no cavities or anything! And I take better care of my teeth, and still have a few cavities! (I personally blame it on my braces those many years ago!) NO FAIR!

ADPiSAI 10-18-2003 01:49 AM

I have never had any cavities or fillings!
Neither has my next-door neighbour/adopted dad who is in his 40's.

I also never had braces :D

krazy 10-23-2003 11:41 AM

Not as true as you think...

This is what I meant. While it isn't Great for your teeth, it really causes less of a problem than most foods. Your saliva washes away most of the sugar from the sodas MUCH easier than your common foods... like bread, etc. It sounded odd to me at first, but I guess it makes sense.

i have tons of fillings. i have bad teeth--although they are very straight and white naturally!

swissmiss04 10-23-2003 05:25 PM

My baby teeth were screwed up because of a high fever. My adult teeth have been pretty good overall...I have sealants on my back molars.

MareImbrium 11-03-2003 04:12 AM

I have way too many fillings. All my wisdom teeth grew in but only one needed to be removed since it was impacted my molars. Can anyone tell me what a root canal is?

moe.ron 11-03-2003 10:11 AM

never had one.

My husband just had one. :( Basically they go all the way down into your tooth and deaden the nerve at the base. You get a temporary filling, then a couple of weeks later you get a permanent filling.

I can see I will be the one teaching oral hygiene to our hypothetical future children. :p

AlphaGam1019 11-03-2003 11:06 AM

just had a cleaning and came up with no cavities ;)

going in tomorrow for some laser bleaching.

bafromkc 11-03-2003 03:20 PM

I think i have a cavity right now in the back of my mouth. I need to go to the dentist to have it checked out.
