What got you over the hump?
While reading the entries from the wedding post, I couldn't help but to go down memory lane. I thought about all of the oldies but goodies. Songs like "Crusin" by Smokey Robinson, "Me and Mrs. Jones" by Billy Paul, "If you don't know me by now" by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, "Always and Forever" Heatwave.....Then I thought about the songs that I played over and over when the loves of my life broke up with me. Remember getting over the hump. That mid-way mark-somewhere between the 4th day and the 8th day. Getting over the hump is still difficult for me today. I Will Survive was one of my getting over the hump songs. I would play that song over and over and over until it didn't hurt so bad. I am going through the hump process right now. I play Toni Braxton's "Just Be A Man About It" over and over and over. What is/was your hump song(s)? Just curious!

That song by Miya, I believe? "If you died I wouldn't cry cause you never loved me anyway..." I'm a gospel buff..but, I'll dust off that CD during those spells.
|
I know this is a little sick, but my getting over the hump song is "Limp" by Fiona Apple. She's not all sad when she sings about someone hurting her, she's millitant! I love it!
I also like "Get Gone" by her. |

I've also used Lauren Hill as well as all those old Luther Vandross songs (that I never used to understand as a teen, but couldn't get enough of as an adult)even some Al Green (Mr. Hot grits himself) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif |
"Let If Flow"- Toni Braxton
"Someday"- Mariah Carey "Can't Let Go"- Mariah Carey "I Don't Wanna Cry"- Mariah Carey "I Heard It Through the Grapevine"-Brownstone |
I listen to stuff like
Tear the Club Up--Three Six mafia Anything by DMX Machinehead--Bush Mouth--Bush Anything hardcore that I can yell along with. |
"There You Go," Pink
"Caught Out There," Kelis "Just Be a Man About It," Toni Braxton "Find Me a Man," Toni Braxton "Lately I," Faith Evans "No Way," Faith Evans "My First Love," Faith Evans ~hell, the whole "Keep the Faith" CD (since I'm coming down the other side of the hump, I have some recent ones) "It's Over Now," 112 "Ta-Da," Lil Mo "You Should've Told Me," Kelly Price Lord, I could go on and on. I'll stop now though. But I will probably post again to this thread!!!!! |
Breakdown...Mariah
Cry Baby...Mariah Dang, I forgot about BROWNSTONE! I had their 1ST CD. You all know that the ONE who left because of bronchitis is a SOROR! Yeah, Ms. Hill is a good one too! Caught Out There was off the hook, too! I had JUST gotten RID of this ZERO! |
The songs that helped me were:
1. "Almost Doesn't Count" Brandy 2. "I Used to Love Him" Lauryn Hill/ Mary J 3. "A Rose is Still a Rose" Aretha 4. "It Don't Hurt Now" Teddy Pendergrass The song that keeps me from having a relapse is Erykah Badu's "Bag Lady". |
Soror AKA2D '91 let me find out you are a 'MARY J' fan!! ;-) Ladies my getting over the hump, before the hump and after the hump songs all come from my Mary collection. One day I sat in the attic of my man's house and just blasted her songs, singing my little heart out. Then a while later he said he does not like me to sing JAY Z songs anymore because he now knows that I live the songs I sing, and he did not want me to be living some ole Jay Z type $hit .... so yeah I love me some Mary and can feel her pain in most of her songs.
Others are Zhane’s Love me today and I don’t know the artist is it and old song and it goes like this: ‘make up to break up that is all we do first you love me then you hate me … that’s a game for fools' See I tend to listen to the songs that keep me down for awhile because I need to get the hurt out first…so I try to get all the bad out, cry for a couple of days use these songs to draw out the pain I don’t exactly know what I play when I am coming out of this spell, I think it goes to gospel and how happy I am to be a live. Any men out there, Sphinxpoet? Do men have a period of I am down, I am rejuvenating… I am all better now???? |
Dang, I forgot about Zhane, too! They first came out when I was in college. They were the JAM!
WHERE ARE THEY NOW? MARY J. FAN IS RIGHT HERE! GIRL, I JUST FEEL AND HEAR HER PAIN! I AM SOOOOOO HAPPY SHE HAS EVOLVED! |

Dang Original, I hear you though ...
what about Alanis Morsett(sp.) as the British say she is 'ripping mad' on her first album and she does not try to hide it. I like her first album!! |

Girl I thought that I was crazy for listening to the sad love ballads while trying to get a man out of my system. I completely understand how you just have to get the hurt out. He would always tell me that I make him feel brand new. I have a gift. I can make you feel like superman. I am a motivator from back yonder! So now I am listening to Norman somebody's song You Make Me Feel Brand New. The entire CD is nice. I think his last name is Brandon, anyway it's off his Celebration CD. Teddy Pendagrass's "Stop Waisting My Time" is also good for getting over the hump. Let me stop I am getting teary eyed. Love you guys!

You guys are pretty eclectic! No wonder I like y'all so much.

I told yall I'd be back!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I do the sad songs, too, Toni Braxton is good for those. I'm glad to see all the Mary fans in here!!! That song with her and K-Ci is definitely the whip, "I KNOW YOU'RE SORRY!" That's my favorite line! There's also a Jill Scott song that sums it up, "Show Me." I'm not sure how I left out Avant, "Separated," that's definitely up there. Ok, I think I'm done now. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

What about that Gerald LeVert song where in the video they are in the courtroom, the kids are crying, and it has that opera sound in the "bridge"? [This message has been edited by AKA2D '91 (edited December 20, 2000).] |
Okay my favorite "wash that man outta my hair " songs are:
She's outta my life -Michael Jackson (just replace the she with he,it works for me) La ,la, la -Zhane ( if anyone has their first album you know what I sayin' about this song) The entire My Life, Share My World & Mary CD's - Mary J. Blidge Love Street - Gerald Levert I love me some him - Toni Braxton Young hearts run free - Candy Stanton ( I love to do the hustle to this one) Now I'm on some other $hit so I'm playin' Get ya mind right mami- Jay-Z (ya gotta play your part when ya rollin with the beauty, can ya feel me?) One that nobody has mentioned is Alanis Morisette's "You Oughta Know"!! I absolutely love that song!! I also like "There You Go" by Pink. Let's not forget "Caught Out There (I hate you so much right now) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif" by Kelis. I could go on and on.
------------------ I'm not conceited, just convinced. |
the song that got me over the hump was "Alright" by CeCe Winans.
My favorite verse is "'Cause HE'S gonna answer every little prayer; just hold on and see 'cause its gonna be alright" ------------------ The truly educated never graduate! |
Poplife, There is nothing sick about Fiona, I use "Limp" too. Her strong voice gets her point across quite well. Have you listened to her first CD "Tidal"? Her songs tell her story so vividly. Check out her "Fast As You Can" too!

If I needed to get over a hump I would probably be listening to "Green Eyes" by Erykah Badu. I almost cried the first time I heard it.
Once I reached the top of the hump I would probably listen to "When You Think of Me" by Eric Benet. Bitterness at its best. AKA2D '91, I didn't realize Will Downing remade that song. Someone also mentioned "My First Love". If you're speaking of the song that Avant remade, that was originally done by Rene and Angela. While I am on the subject of remakes, does anyone know which artist originally made the song D'Angelo did on the Down in the Delta soundtrack? ------------------ "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen." ~Harry S. Truman~ |
MIDWEST...
What's the name of the song D'Angelo made? I saw the movie, but I am not familiar with the soundtrack. I knew that the song Avant made was a remake too. He and Angela (Winbush) sang it together on BET's 106 show. |
Ideal08 ---Girl, you and I are on the same page. I don't like those sad, "my man left me, how can I go on" songs. I like the ones that talk about revenge and anger. I have realized that the quickest way for me to get over an ugly break-up is with anger http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif, I need to almost hate they poor guy, of course we can be cordial later, but that is later.

I feel you, and I had to add my two cents in... "You Oughta Know" by alanis Morisette (for a screamin' good time) & the "hidden" song on her 1st CD (if you fast forward after the last song). Fiona Apple's first CD...my favorite songs are "Sleep to Dream" & "Shadowboxer" Toni Braxton's "Seven Whole Days" and "Love Shoulda Brought You Home Last Night" Donnie Hathaway, his greatest hits (it's the stuff they played in Disappearing Acts) "Rocket Love" by Stevie Wonder And some good old Maxwell to top it all off ("Lonely's the Only"-1st CD, and #7 off the 2nd CD). |
Oh yall have taken me back. Most definetly Zhane's first album. it was off the hook, Everything Happens for a Reason. Alanis Jagged Little Pill is the best I hate everybody album. fiona Apple is my get a bottle of pills and some fotties curl up in a corner and die CD. It is kinda like purging the gross stuff out of your body.
Brian McKnight's Anytime amd One Last Cry have gotten me through some sad moments. And I can't forget Jagged Edge, Gotta Be Boy the Memories |
