Who does this for a hobby?

Me! I took lessons when I was younger. I love to skate, even though it's really seasonal around here (only about November-Feb.)

Now i only do it when I'm with a girl or in a large group...otherwise it's kinda gay.

Good gosh, yes! :eek: I guess it will get better the more I do it, since I only gone ice skating twice in my life. I'm looking forword to doing it many more times this fall and winter, since there's a new rink not far from where I live.

I love to ice skate! I took lessons for a couple of years when I was little at the skating rink that used to be in the local mall but is now a food court. My daughters take lessons now.

Dionysus: remember to lace the skates tightly around where your foot meets the ankle and then looser at the top of the boot. That'll give you the support you need so that your ankles don't start to ache but it won't be so tight that it makes your feet numb :)

I've gone ice skating before, but I'm not that great at it.

Funny Side Note: I saw a flyer on campus today that is for a girl's hockey team...NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED! LMAO. I can't imagine that's gonna work well for girls to dress in the heavy pads, attempting to ice skate and hit a puc across the ice.

i don't figure skate---but i do ice skate -- we are building a rink in our backyard this year so we can go skating and play hockey whenever we want!

What are you talking about?! I play ice hockey. I was a beginner at 14. I had never played a day in my life. I love it! I still play. And the equipment is not that heavy. Once you get going, you don't notice the equipment and if you're a beginner you're going to thank the lord that you are wearing it.

And to add to this... several male hockey players at my university (okay Waterloo hockey isn't awesome... but still) claim that our women's team is extremely good. Supposedly - "Girls are Meeeaaan" on the ice. LOL.

My daughter started skating at 4, and I had to follow her around the rink when she practiced. Now at age 5 she is way beyond me following her around. (She is too cool. :cool: LOL). But I skate every now and then.

She had a hard time deciding whether to play hockey or figure skate. But when I told her she couldn't wear her cute dresses when playing hockey, her decision was clear. ;)

She might play hockey in the future, several girls her age play hockey... And one of her skating instructors was a Dallas Stars Ice Girl.

I figure skate. Matter of fact, I have a competition at the end of this month-->Sf Skate :)

I used to take lessons when I was a little girl. I didn't ice skate for nine years until I went ice skating during my senior year in high school. I thought I lost it, but I didn't. My then boyfriend had to hold on to me for balance!

My daughter has an ISI competition that same weekend. It is her second time to compete. But she loved her first competition, even though she fell. (She got right back up, and smiled through the rest of her routine. I was so proud. :) )
At her level it is hilarious. We spend extra days practicing, all day making her pretty, and her program is only 1 minute long. LOL. :D

My high school actually had a women's hockey team (we had our own hockey rink so it was easy enough to get practice at a good time) and I know a few of the girls got college scholarships for it.

I skated for 16 years. Did a lot of competitions, switched from ISIA to USFSA and then quit when I realized I'd never land my double toe. Flying camels were my fave.


Basically, I was too tall to be a good jumper and was never going to land anything more than a double, but I loved to spin.

I hated it so much by the time I quit that I haven't really thought about it until lately....now I choreograph competition routines.

I don't really go iceskating now, I did back in high school. I always thought it would be cool to be a figure skater. I still want to go someday at Rockafeller Center.

I haven't ice skated in a number of years. But when I was 9 or 10 years old I took lessons, then stopped, then started taking lessons again and then stopped right before I got into high school...

I was decent at that starting time, up to a regular axle. But, too afraid to go into the harness...

The key for me was to wear at least 1-2 sized smaller ice skates than my normal shoe size. I felt like I had better control.

My friend's son had his 6th birthday party at a roller rink, and I tried in-line skates the first time, and all the ice skating training came back to me. I did not fall, once... The only difference on in-line skates, stopping is not the same as on ice skates...

Sounds like she's somewhere between Pre-Alpha through Delta :) I'm ISI also-FS3. Good luck to your daughter and good luck to ME!:D

You are right. She is in Gamma skate school classes. But she has only tested to Pre-Alpha. So she is competing at that level.

Hey, NinjaPoodle, I was a member of the La Jolla Figure Skating Club (LJFSC in San Diego, CA). :)


I was a competitive figure skater for 10 years before I finally quit in high school. I skated ISIA and was at FS-4. Ok, so I wasn't brilliant; I just couldn't land the dumb axel! That wasn't really important to me as I enoyed the artistry of it more than the technical side. Though, I did compete in Skate Asia 89 in Hong Kong and won a gold medal. :D


In addition to freestyle, I also skated on a drill team (the boring version of precision, now called synchronised skating).


When I got to university, I was a guest instructor at Glacial Garden in Anaheim. Since I was studying physical therapy at the time, I helped teach ice skating lessons to disabled children.


I'm with you, AXJules, I was probably too tall for skating. Plus, I too like to choreograph competition routines! I can listen to a piece of music and envision the moves and the costume to go with it. Ocassionally I consider starting up again and trying my hand at competing in the adult category. This way I can finally skate to all the music my coach wouldn't let me when I was younger! :p

LOL I'm not even lying.....it was super frustrating watching 5 year olds land their axel when they don't even have to leave the ground....height TOTALLY works against you. Finally I figured out how to whip myself around but it took 3 precious years to land that axel so I totally sympathize...a big reason of why I hated it soo much.

My two other nemeses, although now I don't understand why- the toe loop and sit spin (again that height thing).

I also taught skating to mentally and physically challenged kids- I'd love to start that up again here but I wouldn't be sure how :(

I've been ice skating once before and I loved it! I never fell once(though there were many times when I almost did). It was funny because everyone else iw as with had skated before and all ended up falling except for me :)

I'm going ice skating again soon with my AKPsi crew, and I cant wait, eventhough I'll probably fall this time because it's been three years since the last time I skated. I wish I could afford lessons. Ice skating is one of my favorite sports to watch on TV.

Right now I'mat FS3 but I've only tested through delta. For my upcoming competition, I'm skating at FS2. I have to test this week.

Just a FYI, I skated today and took home the gold!:) What fun!

Not me. I tore a few ligaments in my right knee and it was my very first time ice skating too. I was on crutches and a leg brace for about 10 days. I did receive a lot of attention from my dormmates. But ever since then I haven't had the desire to go ice skating again.

i wanna go ice skating!!! too bad i dont know of any place near where i can go. i use to go when i was at school cause there is a place in hunington, wv where we would go.
