What Was Your Minor?

Since we know what everyone's major was, let's discuss what we minored in (if we had a minor). Did you find your minor useful post-graduation?

I minored in Sociology.

I find it useful everyday life. It really opened my eyes and helped me to see why people are the way they are. It made me understand people more.

My minor is German. It helps me in my everyday life. I'm doing History and International Buisness. I had to have German as a minor, the company I'm going to do an internship with is based in Essen. The only downside to doing a foreign language, I often find myself speaking the literal translation of something from German to English. It makes me feel like a caveman.

Gina1201 10-13-2003 01:53 PM

My minor was Management Information Systems (MIS). I find it helpful in my current line of work because we tend to use lots of databases and other programs that I dealt with in my minor.

CatStarESP4 10-13-2003 03:36 PM

I minored in English Literature, concentrating in British Literature with an in the Medieval and Renaissance periods!

I minored in French. I like it. :) If I don't qualify for this program that would give me a teaching certificate and a master's with my current major, I'm going to turn my minor into a major and do that instead.

tnxbutterfly 10-13-2003 11:53 PM

My minor was History

Firehouse 10-14-2003 12:15 AM

Shakespeare

I had two minors; one was Shakespeare. Really. I'm more impressed with the Kappa at the top of the board who minored in Combinatronics and Optimization. What is that (those)?!

NutBrnHair 10-14-2003 01:41 AM

I minored in "Chi Omega." Hmmm...actually, that was my major.

wishuponastar 10-14-2003 02:03 AM

I'm minoring in education right now, but that's only because my school doesn't offer a major in education. (Although it has an excellent master's program for education.) I'm majoring in Developmental Psychology which is at least related... :) I plan to get my masters in early childhood education, so I will be using my minor in the future.

MeLikey 10-14-2003 05:52 PM

Criminology & Criminal Justice-- not that I want to do anything with it, I just thought it was interesting at the time... looking back probably should have chosen something more relative to my major but too late now!

CC1GC 10-14-2003 05:54 PM

Criminology, which as interesting as it is, holds even less significance for me as my Sociology major.

Senusret I 11-01-2003 12:22 AM

My minor was Theology.

I knew full well that there would be no other time in my life where I could study religion for the heck of it. And having attended public schools all of my life until college, I knew nothing about religions other than Christianity. So, I learned a LOT about Islam, a little about Jewish scriptures, a good deal about African and African American religions (voodoo, santeria, candomble'), Ancient Egyptian religion, and mythology.

I will probably never have any practical use for this knowledge, but I feel as though it has made me more well-rounded.

And I do think I grew spiritually by learning about so many religions.

MareImbrium 11-01-2003 04:24 AM

Asian-Pacific studies. I still can't believe my school makes us take a minor if we're not in the Liberal Studies program.

Beryana 11-01-2003 04:40 AM

I have a double major in history and social science with a minor in Anthropology concentrating in archaeology. I also have a graduate certificate in Historic Preservation. I'm also currently working on an MS in Teaching in History as well as an MA in Theology. Basically I feel the grad certificate is a 'minor' to the masters in history - and I plan on using all my degrees to teach religion in the Catholic schools.

I double minored in English and Political Science. I'm getting my teaching endorsements in English, Government and Psych (my major), so I think I'll be using them all!

ladybug1116 11-02-2003 10:38 PM

I minored in Psychology which was very useful in my former profession. (and is still really good for understanding people)

KerriMarie 11-02-2003 11:58 PM

I minored in Psychology... It was briefly a double-major, for about one semester, and then I got out of that craziness and realized I had to take like one more psych class to get a minor. My major wasn't required to have a minor, but it seemed like a good plan.

Were you ever subjected to Dr. Kennedy's child psyc class or any of Dr. Madsen's "special topics" I think both of those guys are senile...though Kennedy is retired now. :p

OleMissGlitter 11-03-2003 10:27 AM

My minors were in French and Marketing with my BA in English. I work on campus here at Ole Miss so I'm going start up classes again to finish my Marketing degree, I'm short 15 hours. I was in school for six years and had many majors and one of them for three years was marketing but accounting and finance held me back. Therefore, I changed my major to English. The school pays for staff members to take two classes a semester plus books. I'm going to take them up on this offer!

DolphinChicaDDD 11-03-2003 12:31 PM

Even though I'm not quite graduated (yet) I do know which of my minors will help me the most- Writing.
I'm still toying with the idea of minoring in Bio instead of a second major...all depends on how much work I really want to do my last semester in college.

auggie83 11-03-2003 01:15 PM

My minor is Spanish. That's going pretty well and all, but i still stumble during conversation... my reading is damn near superb, though!

Sahara27 11-03-2003 02:03 PM

I'm a communication major with minors in public relations, theatre, and women's studies. Yeah, I really can't decide what I want to be when I grow up! :) I can tell you that the theatre helped me out a lot when I needed to do public speaking as well as reading people emotions and reactions -- hopefully it'll help me in May when I graduate! Linking it to my sorority, my com/pr combination really helps me out being PR/Historian of my chapter!

sueali 11-03-2003 03:27 PM

My minor is in german, and although it doesn't come in handy everyday it helps when I have to translate a german transcript for all 2 of our german athlete's.

Steeltrap 11-03-2003 03:31 PM

My minor was sociology. I am still fascinated by the subject, and it does help me in my journalism career.

GeorginaDG63 11-03-2003 05:00 PM

major = communications (broadcasting)
minor = photography

KillarneyRose 11-03-2003 05:16 PM

My minors were Political Science and Economics

"Gavin and me. My major is Gavin and me."
What movie is that quote from? For some reason this thread put that line in my head and it's driving me crazy because I can't remember where I heard it.

In the education program you can't really have a "minor". :(

So, my whole deal is Middle Childhood Education w/a concentration in Social Studies and Language Arts. But I am thinking about grabbing another concentration, probably mathematics.

g41965 11-07-2003 11:36 PM

I minored in economics 18hrs. major was Political Science 30 hrs. I liked economics more.

EagleChick19 11-08-2003 12:51 AM

I definitely didn't have Kennedy, I had a young (wonderful!) guy for Child Psyc... And I think maybe I had Madsen for Abnormal Psyc but I'm not positive.

Majors: Architecture, Urban Planning
Minor (self-designed): Italian

Rudey 01-06-2004 02:38 AM

My school started granting Minors the year after I graduated. Wonderful. If we had been allowed minors I would have racked it up in Math, Chem, and Bio.

AOII*Azra-elle 01-06-2004 04:28 AM

Sarah~ what time period?

My major is Industrial chemistry, and my minor is a complete 180 from chem---it's history. Haven't decided if I'll double major and change it to a major yet or not. And, I don't think it will help me with what I want to do in the future--I'm interested about 500 to 1800 AD. :P *haha*
