"Famous" Chi Omegas who aren't XOs
This topic has always intrigued me -- call it urban legend, call it rumor, etc. and now with the aid of the internet (and shoddy reporting by rags like "People" magazine) the list of "incorrect" famous Chi Omegas continues.
Here's my list of the most often listed "Famous" Chi Omegas who, to my knowledge, never were initiated! Cybill Shepherd Lauren Hutton Heather Locklear Lee Meriweather Shelley Long Lisa Ling The best source for accurate information is our National website. We have many outstanding alumnae, so no need to fabricate others! http://www.chiomega.com/chiomega/alu...utstanding.asp |
I'd always thought Lucy Liu's membership was just a rumor - but it was verified in the last Eleusis!
|
Yes, Lucy Liu joined Eta Chapter of Chi Omega at the University of Michigan.
Notice on some chapter websites the famous Chi Os will be listed as well as which chapter they joined; however, some are missing a chapter affiliation. Sometimes that's because they don't have one! Where was Cybill Shepherd a Chi Omega? She wasn't. |
I know that people get Lucy and Lisa confused...but I always knew Lucy was in and Lisa wasn't.
Someone once made a good point that you never know if the famous actresses once had different names and now have stage names  and maybe that's why they're not listed. Although it's pretty evident which celebrities are noted when Chi Omega mentions them in Eleusis! Sela Ward...Lucy Liu... |
Lee Meriwether?!?!?!?! Not a Chi Omega?!?!?!
|
Awww Hootie, I'm sorry to disappoint you about Lee! Her real name is Lee Ann Meriwether and she attended City College of San Francisco. (No Chi Omega Chapter ever there.)
Now you know Mary Ann Mobley, Miss America 1959, was a Chi Omega and the very next year she crowned Linda Lee Mead (her Little Sister in Chi Omega) as the next Miss America. Both were from Tau Chapter at Ole Miss. |

Listen, I wish she was...but I don't think she is! |

I know I should remember this but which one was crowned Miss Universe? And wasn't Lee also Cat Woman? |
Sylvia Hitchcock - Nu Beta Chapter, University of Alabama
Former Miss Universe And yes, Lee Meriwether was the Catwoman in the 1966 Batman movie. The Batman TV show had the best Catwoman, in my opinion, Julie Newmar. (That was my era, Hootie -- you knew I'd know that trivia!) |
Nutbrnhair-
I am so impressed with your Chi Omega knowledge! Did you hold office when you were active? UCF CUTIE |
Awwww...thanks, ucfcutie! Yes, I was an officer (and honestly, it doesn't seem that long ago!).
|
You would have made a great Pledge Educator!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's the position I always wanted cuz back in the day I read about Chi Omega history a lot and knew a lot of trivia! :)
What were you btw? |
I was G.H. and Personnel Chairman.
Back on the "Famous" Chi O topic...I remember when I was in college we thought Barbara Eden & Agnes Morehead were Chi Omegas! No telling where that rumor started. |
I'd heard the Barbara Eden rumor, too!?
|
Just a funny sidenote Delta Zeta has the Brady bunch mom, but we have the Leave it to Beaver mom!

(My "Research Dept." just found this: Birth Name: Barbara Lillian Combes -- Attended Los Angeles Junior college for one year and then went to New York when the review she was appearing in, "Straw Hat", made it to Broadway. The show closed after five days.) |
LMAO! I thought Joanne Woodward was Beave's mom!

Please forgive me for crashing your thread, but we always got a kick out of Joanne Woodward (ChiO) being married to Paul Newman, while Lola Redford (ADPi) being married to Robert Redford (well, his first marriage, anyhow!). Also, there was a Melissa Galbraith who was a ChiO at Pitt, and she was a Miss Teenage America, but I have no idea which year. |

What a sweet welcome! The least I could do is provide y'all with a photo of Melissa Galbraith (she won Miss Teenage America in 1973, and she's with the 1974 winner, Paula Harper): http://users3.ev1.net/~dave42/harper...aMTA2thumb.jpg I think Melissa is on the right. |

Honey, I have located Melissa Galbraith on our roll & I shall add her to our "Famous Chi Os" list elsewhere in this Forum. Thanks again! |

Well here I am responding almost 5 years later to NutBrnHair's amusing post about famous Chi Omegas who weren't XOs...very sorry for the delay!
Re: Heather Locklear...she is often confused with Heather Thomas (probably best known for her role as "Jody" on the '80s T.V. series, "The Fall Guy," and for a "pin-up girl" type poster that came out about the same time as the show I believe). Both "Heathers" were at UCLA when I attended the university in the mid-late 70's and the reason Heather Locklear is frequently and incorrectly referred to as a Chi Omega alumna. Heather Thomas was in my fall 1975 Chi Omega pledge class and she was definitely initiated (as we all were) during UCLA's winter quarter 1976. Heather Locklear began her studies at UCLA when Heather Thomas and I were upper classmen if I remember correctly. Heather Locklear was on the cover of the UCLA Bruin "Bearwear" catalogue her freshman year, I think, and then became a campus sensation (but XO Heather Thomas was quite the campus beauty as well!). FYI: Heather Thomas was highlighted in a recent Eleusis for publishing her first novel, "Trophies." She was also interviewed on "The Today Show," etc., about the book. |
