Happy Thanksgiving

To all my fellow Canadian GCers...

Have a Happy Thanksgiving and a great long weekend!!!

sigmagrrl 10-11-2003 03:31 PM

Since I love to learn new things, can someone tell me what Canadian Thanksgiving is all about?? What are some of the traditions???

Jill1228 10-11-2003 03:42 PM

Due to the fact that my husband is Canadian and I am American, we celebrate both

Thankgiving is held the 2nd Monday in October. Pretty much the end of the harvest. We have the big old dinner and everything!

Same as the US one. Except they don't have the 2 football games and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade! :D

sigmagrrl 10-11-2003 04:05 PM

Is it the same menu and everything???

**Sigmagrrl heads off to look up Canadian Thanksgiving online**

Jill1228 10-11-2003 04:57 PM

Happy Thanksgiving To All Of OUR Canadian Brothers and Sisters North of Us!

mullet81 10-11-2003 06:27 PM

as opposed to our Canadian brothers and sisters south of us ;)

hehe, i'm just joking with you!!

I wish I was canadian or that this weekend was Thanksgiving for us Americans... mmm turkey, stuffing, mashed taters, corn, rolls.. i'm getting hungry!

sigmagrrl 10-11-2003 06:59 PM

Sorry, slight hijack...

I think I'm from one of the only families that never served mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving! I cannot imagine adding that to the menu!

/hijack over!

Lady Pi Phi 10-11-2003 07:39 PM

We don't have mashed potatoes with our dinner. We don't have yams either (and certainly not with marshmellows...no offense but what's that about?)

Our traditional dinner usually includes:

Turkey
Roast Potatoes
Carrots
Green Beans
Cauliflower
Broccoli
Brussle Sprouts (most times all my mum is the only one who eats them)
Cranberry Sauce
Gravy
Stuffing
And a Finnish dish (which I can't spell...so I won't try). It's basically a carrot and turnip caserole...trust me it excellent.

For dessert we usually have:
Pumpkin Pie
and another tradition Finnish dish (again can't spell it), but it's basically a Cranberry mousse. It contains Semolina, cranberries, sugar and milk and it's all whipped up and served with whipped cream. Yummm!

That sounds like a wonderful feast. Happy Thanksgiving, neighbors.

LOL - I thought you meant Sukkoth or the Feast of Tabernacles!

Happy Thanksgiving to our Canadian friends AND our Jewish friends!

Sigmagrrl, please educate me about this yams with marshmellow dish...I have never heard of it and I am curious! :)

Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving Day on the second Monday of October and Americans set aside the
fourth Thursday of November. The only reason for this is because of the seasonal differences between
the two countries. The harvest in Canada happens earlier in the year.

That is not the only difference between the two celebrations...

Read this...apparently Canadians *DID* celebrate Thanksgiving in November for a while.... hmmmm, interesting!

Yams/Sweet potatoes with marshmellows must be an American tradition because I have never met a Canadian who eats that.

I think I'll pass.

Yams are fine on their own.

Happy Thanksgiving to our neighbors of the North!

HAPPY THANKGIVING EVERYONE!

My family had pretty typical fare... well... for being half italian. Dinner was usually at Grandmas and consisted of the following:

First course (skipped when Grandma didn't feel like it):
Antipasto (umm... bread sticks, cheese, olives, proshuto (sp?)... etc)

Second course:
Lasanga or Gnocchi or some other pasta or fish soup (mmmmmm.... fish soup!)
Meatballs, or beef cooked in tomato sauce
Bread

Third course:
POTATOES: (baked, mashed or both)
VEGGIES: (varies - pick about 4 of the following corn, brusselspouts, turnip, carrots, beans, bell peppers, mushrooms, peas, articoke (though that was rare), cold veggies)
TURKEY (with stuffing and gravy)
MEAT (because Turkey wasn't enough!): Pick at least TWO of the following - steak, roast beef, chicken, cornish hen, ham (ham was very common), veal, pork, rabbit, duck

Fourth course:
SALAD! - greens, oil, vinger, and salt. It's good when Grandma doesn't over do it with the salt...
Also making appearence certain years: Cheese, Fruit, Veggie Platters

Fifth course: DESSERT!!!
CHEESE CAKE - not like the ones you buy. Very fluffy! Served with canned cherries on top.
Also making appearances certain years (most of in addition to the cheesecake, though sometimes instead of)
CHOCOLATE!
NUGET! (sp?)
PIE
CAKE (other cake)
ICE CREAM

Afterwards: Coffee... and dishes... lots of dishes...

Aww ... man... I'm so depressed right now, because I'm not at my Grandma's for this Thanksgiving... i'm at my boyfriends parents house. Writing all this out is making me hungry!

Jill1228 10-12-2003 04:07 AM

Y'all can revoke my Soul Card/Black Card/Southern Card:
I do NOT do yams with marshmallows (I hate yams!) and I do NOT do sweet potatoes in any way, shape or form! Yuk! Ewwwwww!

My grandmother actually asked me: "are you sure you are Black?" (Uhhh yeah last time I checked). And then "are you SURE you are related to us?" (I do resemble her!)

Sigh...here is my card! :D

Sigmagrrl, my husband (white and VERY Canadian) knew what a hamhock was...now my mother in law was a different story. Now my husband makes better collard greens than I do!

OK, small cooking lesson:

Get some cans of yams with pineapple juice at the grocery store. The best brand is Bruce's Candied Yams. Warm them in a pot. Then transfer them to a deep baking dish. Combine it with a small amt of butter, some maple syrup, some brown sugar, pineapple chunks, and some of the leftover juice from the can. Mash, but still leave it a little chunky (think mashed potatoes, smooth, but not). Cover entire top of yams with mini marshmallows and bake until the marshmallows on top are brown and melty (sort of like a 'smore)...Serve hot! YUMMY!

mmcat 10-12-2003 08:44 AM

yumm...all this yam talk is making me hungry.
also consider apple pie, pecan pie for desert and zuchini with green chile as one of the vegetables. my mom makes a mean casserole.

absolutuscchick 10-12-2003 11:45 AM

The only way I know how.... VERY SMALL PORTIONS.

oh, and the fifth course is usually an hour after the fourth, so we have time to "make some room"

(umm... though, I tend to eat all of the pasta portion, and then go really small on the rest)

Lady Pi Phi 10-13-2003 10:38 AM

Today is actually Thanksgiving, but I had my dinner yesterday.

I was so stuffed! I'm still feeling stuffed. But it was excellent.
I hope everyone enjoyed their dinners or will be enjoying them today.

kappaloo 10-13-2003 12:20 PM

I think most people tend to eat on the Sunday. I think it's nice because then we have Monday for relaxation. :)

Dinner and my boyfriend's parents was good. I had butternut squash (?? Or what ever that type of squash is) soup! It was sooo tasty!

I hope you have an excellent day Lady Pi Phi! (and everyone else too!)

sigmagrrl 10-13-2003 12:24 PM

WCUgirl 10-08-2004 04:45 PM
