Lettered Sweatshirt as an Alum?

Hi all!

I am in need of some advice! I am a recent graduate of Indiana University. I am still in Bloomington doing the school thing at another college for nursing, so not at IU. Well, I have ALWAYS wanted a lettered sweatshirt, just like the one at the link below.
For some reason, as a chapter, we never ordered sweatshirts like the one I want...just my letters with a foreground and background color on a regular hooded sweatshirt. I had been tempted to buy one individually at our local greek store, but they were almost $50 for me to do and I could not afford that! Well, I found this website and they have the exact kind of sweatshirt I have wanted and it is relatively cheap at $28 and change.

The question is, now that I have graduated, would I look like a total tool for buying and wearing this sweatshirt? I see some of my sisters randomly throughout town, but my two jobs and my school don't have anyone that is greek. I'm just wondering what other people like at IU or my sisters would think if they saw me in that sweatshirt, even though I graduated. Does this situation make sense?! I want the sweatshirt more than anything right now, but I don't want people to think that I am stuck in my undergrad days as a "sorority girl!" If I did get it, since I want it so much, I would probably wear it for several years. Is that like taboo?

What do you all think I should do?! Sorry if this seems pety, but I just don't know what to do! Thanks!

I still wear my lettered sweatshirts and T-shirts and at this age, I couldn't care less what anyone else thinks about dorkiness! I doubt they think anything since so many NPHC alums in town wear their letters.

I never say I "was" a Pi Phi. I AM a Pi Phi.

AGDee 10-07-2003 10:07 PM

I wear lettered shirts as often as I can!

When I go alum, I will definitely be wearing my letters often...:) :) So I don't think it's wierd that you want a lettered hoodie

Do it! If any of the collegiates dare give you a hard time, tell them to deal with it!

tinydancer 10-07-2003 10:18 PM

I'm hoping to be an AI soon, and when I do, I am going to have lettered everything!! I'll be so proud to wear them. I don't care what anyone else thinks, and I'm right on up there in age.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 10-07-2003 10:20 PM

get it.

GO FOR IT! I've only been in my sorority a little more then a year and I have yet to get a lettered sweatshrit. I'm hoping to make up for that soon

adduncan 10-07-2003 11:18 PM

My other half is over 30 and he still wears his letter sweatshirt. (And occasionally he lets me borrow it too -- I'm 35 this month.)

He wears his letters 'cause he's proud of 'em and anyone who thinks that's "foolish" can take a hike!

just pretend its old

AOIIalum 10-08-2003 07:42 AM

Wear it! Wear it loud, wear it proud! Heck, I still wear my letters and am considering purchase of a new letter sweatshirt. Just the thing for those cold morning soccer games!

AOII_Luv 10-08-2003 08:20 AM

Thank you all very much! I was hoping that you all would have positive thoughts about the sweatshirt! I am VERY proud to be an AOII but I was just wondering if at some point I would be too old to wear a lettered sweatshirt. I am going to order it this afternoon! Thanks again!

Tom Earp 10-08-2003 09:18 AM

HELL YES! GO FOR IT!

I wear a LXA hat on weekends or any sporting event.

Wear shirt and hat when go back to the Pitt. for events!

KillarneyRose 10-08-2003 10:28 AM

Treat yourself to the sweatshirt! You're still an AOII; you always will be so wear your letters with pride :)

I have several letter items I've bought within the last five years and I wear them fairly often. I can finally afford all the cool stuff I wasn't able to buy in college so why not, right? :)

LambdaPapi 10-08-2003 10:34 AM

Get it and wear it. I still wear my letters when I go places.

GeekyPenguin 10-08-2003 11:14 AM

Wear it! I still wear letters all the time and I'm an alumna. I think it's great to see alums wearing letters - it really shows your affiliation is for life!

AchtungBaby80 10-08-2003 11:26 AM

Well, I think it's cute...so get it! :p It's only $28? Man, I may have to point my family in that direction since my birthday and Christmas are coming up!

I'm an alum (albeit a recent one), but I still wear my letters all the time. In fact, I just made three new letter shirts in the past couple months. So if you look dumb wearing yours, at least we'll look dumb together. :)

texas*princess 10-08-2003 11:40 AM

I say go for it!
You made a lifetime committment when you joined AOII! :)
So you shouldn't feel weird and only wear your letters in college!

Same here... I actually got most of my DO stuff since being out of school... it's too expensive when you're an undergrad. Wear it with pride!

DGMarie 10-08-2003 11:42 AM

The first thing I bought when I got my AI bid for DG was a navy blue letter sweatshirt with double letters (plaid on white). I wear it a lot! I'll admit I get a few looks bec this isn't a college town (or even close to one) but I like it!

USFSDTAlum 10-08-2003 12:01 PM

if your concerned about it....
I've seen several of our alumni take their nicer items back and have them embroider (sp?) Alumna (Alumni, Alum...whatever you want) through the letters. Its looks really nice if you get a pretty font.

This is the best idea I"ve heard in a long time!

:D

Munchkin03 10-08-2003 01:10 PM

Oooh! I might do that. Being in grad school and all, I don't want to be mistaken as a 19 year old. ;)

Now that I'm alum, I tend to wear my jewelry more than actual letters. I actually ended up giving most of my letters to my littles. I do wear some to work out. :)

ChaosDST 10-08-2003 02:25 PM

Interesting "dilemma."

Why is there such a distinction made b/w "collegiates" and alumn??

Once an "XYZ," always an "XYZ," right?

LOL....

adduncan 10-08-2003 02:31 PM

The difference is not in membership, but the form of expression one takes when graduating from collegiate to alum.

This is one of the many differences between the NPC and NPHC that I should hope we can all accept and respect.

LOL...Munchkin, once when I was a twenty-five-year-old law school student, I was mistaken for a college freshman, and it was the highlight of my week! I still thank the girl who made that mistake every time I see her. ;) :D

BobraFCD 10-08-2003 04:15 PM

Get the sweatshirt! I am WELL past my collegiate years and just got involved with the alumnae chapter. I just bought a sweatshirt and t-shirt (new) off of EBay. Just do a search for "alpha omicron pi". I paid $20 bucks for both plus $10 in shipping and handling.

You might check out the AOII emporium as well. I think the price you were given from the link you posted is a little high.

I think it's time we alums wore our letters. Let's start a trend. Maybe the third Saturday in October should be declared National Greek Letters Day for alums and collegiates alike!

HotDamnImAPhiMu 10-08-2003 05:10 PM

no way. Every Sunday!

BobraFCD 10-08-2003 05:42 PM

I'd look pretty silly wearing AOII letters to church :)

Designergal3 10-08-2003 06:08 PM

Matthew McConahey is a Delt alum and i've heard he's ALWAYS seen wearing his letters at his college at games and the such.

AXORissa 10-09-2003 12:28 AM

I adore my hoodie, i still wear it. I dont really wear any other letters (besides T-shirts to lounge around in, and my windbreaker if its raining and Im just going to the store, etc), but my hoodie is my prized set of letters.

tri-d 10-09-2003 03:24 AM

Get it already!

Well as if you need one more person to tell you go for it...
I speak from experience--if you want it now and think you might regret NOT purchasing the sweatshirt later, then by all means....

I am working toward my masters now (a few years after getting my bachelors) on a campus that doesn't even have my sorority. I still wear some of my favorite tri-delt stuff and occasionally people notice. At first, I was a little self-conscious--worried about others thinking I was trying to rekindle my youth or something--but I have pride for my letters and I definitely wear them often.

BTW, I checked out the link and now I am totally tempted!

AOX81 10-09-2003 06:23 AM

I wear letters ALL the time and I graduated in 2000. :)

LOL!
With all the people injecting Botox in their faces, and having every plastic surgery known to man, I don't think wearing letters would be considered rekindling your youth. :)

MereMere21 10-09-2003 04:06 PM

I sewed all of my collegian shirts into a quilt and there are days I look at it and want to just wear that because I miss my letters! (My fav was "get lucky with an AGD" Crush Party shirt - - - I loved wearing it when I was obviously pregnant hehehe)

I'm slowly re-building my Alpha Gam apparel in my closet - I actually just ordered that same sweatshirt yesterday tee hee. Go for it! you are a sister for LIFE remember? that includes letter privledges :D

JLyons 10-09-2003 04:46 PM

I, myself, am about to order a lettered shirt and will have Alumni embroidered underneath the letters. Just a thought for you!

Our Gamma Rho chapter gets lettered shirts with UW-Oshkosh embroidered underneath them...I think it looks great. Maybe once I look old enough to be an alum I'll get alumna embroidered, but as for now, I'll just let everybody keep thinking I'm still active somewhere.

Unless your sorority has begun to initiate men on a widespread basis, you may wish to embroider "alumnae" instead.. ;)

JLyons 10-09-2003 05:07 PM

Thanks. Don't know what I was thinking. That would definitely be more appropriate!:D
