Greeks in your grad school

Does anyone ever meet sisters/brothers once they get to grad school and form friendships with them?
Last year I was wearing a KD shirt, and another 1L came up to me and said she was a KD too. Now we're good friends, and she's on my chapter's advisory board.

What brought this on is that I was looking through the applications to my law fraternity and came across a lot of greeks. Among the 60 applications we have so far:
Phi Sigma Kappa- 1
Chi Omega- 1
Kappa Alpha Theta- 2
Delta Chi- 1
Delta Delta Delta -1
Alpha Delta Pi- 1
Zeta Tau Alpha- 1
Kappa Delta-1
Delta Gamma- 1
Sigma Chi -1
Sigma Alpha Epsilon-1
Sigma Phi Epsilon- 1
Sigma Nu- 1
Alpha Phi -1

So that means that 25% of our applicants so far are social greeks. There's probably more than didn't put it on their applications

:D

Durring my interview for grad school my roommate ended up being a Sig Kapp too. We both ended up going to the same school and were roommates for the first year. It was a lot of fun living with someone after undergrad who you could talk sorority life with.

Speaking of law fraternities, I went to a Phi Delta Phi event on our campus the other day. (I'm embarrassed to say it was speed-dating.) :o They seemed like a very nice bunch.

My MA program is pretty small - 32 incoming students. I know of several Greeks: an ASA, a KKG, a DZ, a LXA, a KD, a Delta, and myself. One of my best friends among the second-years is a KD, too.

In my MPA program, I don't know as many students, but I do know former consultants for Triangle and ATO! And my very own sorority's exec director is in one class with me. How cool is that?

All of these folks represent their GLOs very well - ya'll should be proud of them!

3 Sorors (Delta Sigma Theta)
1 Phi Beta Sigma
1 Zeta Phi Beta
3 Alpha Kappa Alpha

I'm the lonely only.

Since there are only 8 students in my MS program, I believe I'm the only social greek - mind you, out of my three classes this semester I only have class with one of those other 7! We'll see what next semester brings when I have one in-classroom class (though I might get the Education classes out of the way!), One thesis credit and one independent study!

I dont know if there are any other greeks in my grad program. Classes start 1.5 wks ago and I'm still meeting people. But I am meeting the greek advisor tomorrow so I should know something by then.

AXO_MOM_3 10-06-2003 11:03 PM

I have a total of 15 people in my cohort in grad school, and at least five of us are greek. (I'm not sure about our three males - I'll have to ask them!) We have:
Alpha Chi Omega - 1
Alpha Kappa Alpha - 1
Chi Omega - 2
Kappa Kappa Gamma - 1

AXORissa 10-07-2003 01:08 AM

I dont really know who was in what, but of my law school friends, I know offhand:

Pi Phi- 2
Delta Chi-1
Phi Delta Theta- 1
Gamma Phi Beta- 1
Delta Gamma- 2
FIJI- 1
TKE- 1
DPhiE- 2
ZTA- 1
AXO- 3 (one of which is my sister from my chapter!!)

What law fraternity? I'm in PAD...

and does anyone feel weird wearing letters in school? I wore letters last week, mainly because I didnt have any other sweaters in my new apartment and it got so cold! There's this 1L I see wearing her letters a lot. But since mostly everyone is older, around 25+, if they were Greek, they dont wear their letters to class...

I do feel wierd wearing letters to school. Every so often I see someone wearing a date party or formal t-shirt but hardly ever just letters. I wore my letters once and all of the international students kept asking me what they were for. I did feel though that other students gave me some not so nice looks that day.

Texas-Gal 10-07-2003 10:38 AM

I wore my letters (well, sorority shirts) all the time in law school - and considering I went to a school where the undergrads don't have Greek orgs (Notre Dame), I was usually the only one in them on campus.

Funny thing is, most of the people I knew in law school that were Greek came from the South (Ole Miss, Clemson, Florida State, Texas Tech, & of course Texas), and there weren't very many of us (Southerners).

Of my circle of 10 close law school friends, I am the only Greek.

I wore my badge for graduation!

Bump!

I was searching for something else and found this thread. I didn't know it existed. :)

In my program, here are the Greeks I know of...

1 Kappa Alpha Psi
1 Delta Tau Delta
1 Alpha Epsilon Pi
1 Sigma Nu
1 Omega Psi Phi
1 Alpha Kappa Alpha
2 Delta Sigma Thetas
1 Sigma Kappa

Almost all of my classmates who aren't Greek are VERY anti-greek. The professors share the same attitudes. This is quite disturbing since we all are working or planning to work somewhere on a college campus. :(

A girl who was in 4 of my classes in library school had been in Sigma Delta Tau undergrad.

And of course, one of my Alpha Phi Omega brothers from the Tau chapter was at my library school and entered a year after me.

I just went to a 'Meet & Greet' for my grad program (M. Ed. in Counseling) a few weeks ago. My program is very small (about 40 people TOTAL). There only were a couple of greeks there:

Myself
1 Delta Zeta (I actually know her from a couple undergrad classes)
1 Chi Omega (also know her from Panhellenic activities)
1 Sigma Kappa (from Ohio U)
1 Alpha Xi Delta (surprise, know her too from undergrad)

I don't think I even discussed Greek affiliation with anyone in grad school. I know that there was one disaffiliated Kappa.

In the work world, I thought I'd be meeting Greeks left and right. I even think I might be the only one in my 70-person office!

Kali-n-Kohl 04-17-2007 10:28 PM

in my MSW I know of
1- Alpha Phi
1- Chi Omega
1- Alpha Delta Pi
1- Alpha Epsilon Pi

MJo19 04-17-2007 11:08 PM

1 Delta Delta Delta
1 Alpha Chi Omega
3 Alpha Kappa Alphas
1 Kappa Alpha Psi

Drolefille 04-17-2007 11:22 PM

I have a very small program and I'm new to it still but in my classes I've met

1 Chi Omega and
1 Pi Beta Phi

I'm sure there are more, but many of them are further out of college than I am and don't wear T-shirts and jeans to class anymore!

Same here, it's rarely been discussed. I know a couple of friends who were in fraternities, although the names escape me; one girl I know of is a sorority member, but other than that I haven't heard anyone talk about it.

gphiangel624 04-20-2007 11:18 PM

I've had several Greeks in my MA program, but most are from local chapters (I'm in grad school where there are only locals) and I don't recall which ones they all belong to. The ones I do remember:

1) 1 Gamma Phi Beta (me!)
2) 1 Chi Sigma Chi (local)
3) 1 Alpha Phi from another undergrad
4) 1 Lambda Theta Nu (disaffiliated)

What's funny is that I occasionally have a bag with my sorority letters on it and I get looked at funny by the Greek students on campus. They know that there are no orgs on campus other than the locals there, so occasionally a former colleague (who used to work with Greeks there) would tell me that he was approached by some students about some sorority woman who was crashing campus. Lol

BigRedBeta 04-21-2007 12:59 PM

In my med school class of 120ish

4 Betas (me, one of my pledg bros, and our pledge ed along with another guy from a different chapter)
2 Lambda Chis
3 SigEps
1 DU
1 ADPhi
1 ATO
2 Theta Chis
1 (maybe 2) Phi Taus
2 (used to be 3) Pikes
1 FarmHouse
1 PhiPsi

2 Thetas
1 Gamma Phi
2 Tri-delts
1 AZD
1 DG
2 DZ's

So 28 or 29...not a bad percentage. Get down to our offical class size and we're over 25%
