Rush at University of Oregon!

Rush starts tomorrow! I'm not sure if anyone on this board is rushing at U of O, or are interested, but it should be really fun! I just graduated, but I'll be talking to the girls in my house, finding out how rush is going and will definitely let everyone know. Anyone rushing, or know of anyone rushing, in Oregon by any chance? :D

hi i was just wondering what houses are on the UofO campus. Good luck with rush.

ZTAngel 10-04-2003 08:07 PM

Here's the U of O website:

http://www.uoregon.edu/~grklife/soror.html

These are the chapters:

Alpha Chi Omega
Alpha Phi
Chi Omega
Delta Gamma
Gamma Phi Beta
Kappa Delta
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Pi Beta Phi
Sigma Kappa

PiPhiERDoc 10-05-2003 05:26 PM

Didn't there used to be a TriDelta chapter at Uof O as well? When/why did they leave?

KDbutterfly 10-05-2003 10:38 PM

Yah, Tri-Delts were on our campus my freshman year. The 1999-2000 school year was the last year they were there sadly. They couldn't get their numbers up enough, so all the current Tri-Delts decided to go alum. It's sad to see that happen, cause just recently Sigma Kappa also lost their house because of low numbers. Though, SK's are involved in formal rush this year, so we're all crossing our fingers that they will soon be getting their house back. They're making an amazing recovery. The last thing we want is to lose another chapter, so we're all doing whatever we can to make sure all the chapters on our campus stay strong.

BadSquirrelBeta 10-07-2003 02:56 AM

SNAPS...

go to you and all the other greeks for supporting the chapter on the UO campus that is having numbers issues.

I thought that for some reason that AGD was there as well as OSU.

So, what kind of legacy did Animal House leave on the UO campus since it was filmed there? Then, we can't forget the legacy of Pre, the great runner, either.

Wow, UO is full of history...

Take care and best wishes to all the greek groups on campus!

Take care!!!

KDbutterfly 10-07-2003 03:40 AM

Greeks on our campus are definitely proud that Animal House was filmed here. Though, I know there are quite a few people who are running the greek life office now who definitely try to repel those stereotypes. All our sororities have been dry for quite a while, but fraternities were just recently forced to go dry last year. Ironically, the two fraternities that wouldn't go dry, and therefore lost University support, were the two chapters that currently owned the houses featured in the movie, Pi Kappa Alpha and Sigma Nu. However, Sigma Nu has recently agreed to go dry, and now Phi Kappa Psi is taking over the Pike house and they will be dry as well. Phi Psi's were the original owners of the house, so it will be good to have them back on campus. I'm not sure what will become of the Pikes now. Sadly, their chapter hasn't been as strong since they agreed to stay a wet house.

I'd be interested to see if the fraternities on our campus have overall gotten smaller or bigger since the dry houses came into effect. It's hard to say, though I do miss the days when parties and functions didn't have so many rules and regulations. Some fraternities don't even participate in mixers at all, just because it's too big a risk. It takes a lot of fun out of the whole thing.

p.s.

Rush is going great here so far though. Unfortunately, numbers are down...only about 300 girls signed up for rush compared to about 500 last year. A lot of us think it has a lot to do with the $30 fee to go through recruitment. It was only $20 last year. Hopefully it will help with retention, cause if you're willing to pay $30, then you probably are more willing to hang in there throughout the week. So we'll see how the higher price effects the end results. Tomorrow's pref night!! Our house had a 82% return rate after Activity's Day, so it's definitely exciting. I'll let you all know when I hear about the final results for every house. :)

AXWhoah 10-07-2003 04:06 AM

It's kinda weird how a lot of campuses are saying how recruitment numbers are down...here at Arizona the numbers were way up. We were expecting about 750ish which is what we had last year and we ended up with 850. Plus we have a steep recruitment fee compared to a lot of schools. It was $110 when I went through and I'm pretty sure it's gone up...Oh and the Phi Psi's are coming back to Oregon, yay! My boyfriend told me about that a while back (since he's a Phi Psi) and he's excited about another Pac-10 chapter. Good luck to all Oregon sororities during recruitment...seeing as how there has to be at least one girl from my high school in each chapter...

KDbutterfly 10-07-2003 04:19 AM

Yah, it's very strange how recruitment numbers were lower this year. There have been steadily more and more girls signed up for rush every year since my freshman year. All of us are just trying to speculate how and why this could happen this particular year. Our campus is definitely very liberal, so there's not exactly a large amount of campus support, but then again it's been like that for years and years, so why this year would it be down? I think on this campus since students are more apt to be on the way liberal side, it takes more to convince people to rush. Something like a $30 fee might not be all that much, but on our campus it may make a difference between signing up for rush and not signing up. It's really the best theory we can come up with.

PiPhiERDoc 10-08-2003 05:29 PM

News?

KDbutterfly -- what's the news???? I'm dying to hear how you all did!!!

KDbutterfly 10-08-2003 08:25 PM

Ah! Me too!!! Bid day starts in about 20 minutes, and a couple close sisters in the house have promised to call me afterwards to let me know how all the houses did. I will let you know the second I find out :D

KDbutterfly 10-09-2003 10:53 PM

Finally some news on how my house did! Still no word on the others, but hopefully I'll find out later tonight. Well, quota was set at 23, and we got quota! We got every girl we wanted, so I'm so happy about it. It's so weird, cause last year quota was 36! That's okay though, cause it sounds like everyone loves all the new girls in our house. Quality over quantity. I'll let you know when I find out how all the other houses did. :D

AXO_MOM_3 10-09-2003 11:42 PM

Congratulations on a successful recruitment KDbutterfly!

GPhiBLtColonel 10-10-2003 12:56 AM

Congrats KD!:)

Would love to hear how the other sororities at Univ of Oregon did -- esp Gamma Phi Beta!;)

Aphigal 10-10-2003 10:10 AM

I heard that quota was 23 and that 6 groups matched quota (AXO, A Phi, Chi O, DG KKG, and Pi Phi). Of the groups matching quota, 5 of the 6 matched quota plus - including DG that matched quota plus 7 for a total of 30 new members!

Alpha Phi matched quota plus 2 for 25 new members!!

GPhiBLtColonel - Gamma Phi matched 17

How did this happen? I thought quota additions weren't supposed to be more than 5% of quota...

Anyway, congrats to all :)

Aphigal 10-10-2003 12:19 PM

Some GA's will do this because it is for women who maximized their opportunities and otherwise would have been cross-cut. Even though it is against Greenbook rules.

MFC2002 10-10-2003 01:12 PM

There is an unverified rumor that the GA allowed those chapters that matched quota but were under total to snap to Total even though its against the greenbook policies. So whereas some chapters took legitimate quota additions, other chapters took some legitimate quota additions and additional snaps to fill to total.

huh? I swear every time I hear "snap bidding" I get confused. What is the difference between "snaps to fill to total" and simply giving open bids to fill to total? Does it have to do with timing or something?

AZ-AlphaXi 10-10-2003 02:24 PM

The term SNAP BID is supposed to be used to refer to bids given to women in the period between when formal bids are matched and when the formal bids are distributed. SNAP Bids (per the "green book") are only supposed to be used to take a chapter who didn't achieve quota to quota. SNAP bids are not supposed to be used to take a chapter that has met quota to total.

The idea is that women who do not match or who dropped out of formal recruitment are given a chance to accept a bid and be part of the formal bid distribution process and bid day activities.

shadokat 10-10-2003 04:32 PM

Quota plus 7?!?! That is insane. I understand the "play by the rules and you'll get a bid" mentality, but doing a quota addition of 7 is way too many.

KDbutterfly 10-13-2003 07:43 AM

Yah, I just heard about all this madness myself. I'm totally not sure what went on. I swear, I leave, and everything goes crazy. I was computer chair last year, and this definitely did not happen then. I guess our house got 22, not 23, but not that big a difference. I'm not sure exactly how many each of the other houses got though. All I know is, I'm confused. If you're interested in seeing some of the house's bid day pictures though, here's the link:

http://www.printroom.com/ghome.asp?d...oto&group_id=2

If anyone hear's more about how this happend, or understands how this could happen, please let me know. I'll let you guys know too if I can get any word on it.

KDbutterfly 10-13-2003 07:55 AM

After thinking about it some, the fact that DG got 7 over quota does seem a little odd. But I know their senior class was huge last year, so they lost a lot of girls. It's possible that the greek life office made an exception for them so they could be closer to total, but that seems unfair for everyone else. The senior class at KD wasn't that big last year, so we were pretty close to total before rush even started. So, maybe if I had all the numbers in front of me on how close to total each house is, maybe it would make more sense that they let DG take that many over. There's some houses on this campus though that I don't think are all that close to total. The whole thing seems odd to me.
