what do you call someone NOT affiliated?

Hi all-
I've been looking at a lot of different posts on this board and am really impressed with the attitudes and thoughts of the Greeks out there...

I have a question! What is the term y'all use for someone who is not a member of a GLO? At my campus when I was active (5 years ago), we started a movement to eliminate the use of the word "independent" and use "non-Greek" instead. What's the common practice in other schools / regions?

FlyPhi 07-26-2000 05:38 AM

they are still called GDI's at my school.
(Gosh Darn Independent or God Damn Independent)

Manders 07-26-2000 08:28 AM

We just calll them independents. I don't think that's offensive at all. It's annoying when everything has to be changed so many times. But whatever no biggie

-sketchball- 07-26-2000 08:32 AM

we call them independents, if we like them or don't care, or GDI's, when they make trouble.

LikeASista 07-26-2000 11:12 AM

We just call them none-phi-none. Before I was greek, I called myself me-phi-me.

I've also heard the term Me phi Me

I guess I personally just don't like the implication that if non-Greeks are "independent", that Greeks are DEpendent! (as in, not capable or lacking in some way).

SoCalGirl 07-27-2000 02:10 PM

I agree with Texas Alum.

We call them unaffiliated.

Hermana 07-29-2000 10:45 PM

We call them "private citizens."

As far as the Independent vs. dependent thing goes, think about this. If you don't affiliate with a political party, you are an Independent. Just because you do affiliate with this party, doesn't make you dependent on them, you have just alligned yourself with their platform. The same goes with GDI vs. GLO member. Just because the term GDI is used, doesn't make them more independent, they just don't allign themselves with a certain GLO's way of thinking, principles, or what have you.

I definitely understand that it is just a term, but subconsciously I think people still connote.

If they didn't, we wouldn't have thrown out "pledge", "rush" and "suicide" as Greek terms. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

sorry, a friend of mine showed me this post and I felt the need to respond. As a GDI (or one not affiliated with any greek organizations not geared towards academic excellence), I can tell you from experience that we don't really care what you call us. Call us GDIs or whatever you wish.....My question to you all is, if I am independent are you considered dependents? And what does God have to do with anything? Did he come forth on the 5th day and say let there be greeks? Not that I see much wrong with the greek organizations as a whole, but why do you feel the need to segregate yourselves from the rest of campus (not to burst anyone's bubbles, but relatively few people on any major campus are actually greek)?

Well anyway, these are just a few ponderings of an unaffiliated person.

Ohh some questions before I go, how do you guys get cookiecutters that big? And do you really issue those platform rubber sandles to the sorority pleebs or is my leg just being pulled?

---Unaffiliated person who doesn't pay 3k a year to drink with people he doesn't like but still calls them brothers.

Wow, what a coincidence. I don't pay $3k a year for that stuff either. I do however pay $4500 a year to my fraternity. This money goes towards housing, food, rush, philanthropies, social events (yes even those not involving alcohol), and a small portion goes to our international headquarters, to pay those on the payroll, pay for publications, seminars, and that type of stuff. Yet, it is still cheaper for me to be a part of my fraternity than to live in a dorm. Something's not right there!

By the way, I don't drink or hang out with anyone who is not my friend, but I'll do both with every one of my brothers. I became friends with many of them, and THEN joined the fraternity, and then became friends with the rest of them.

Get a life

A lot of times, it is the GDI's segregating themselves from the Greeks...some because they are bitter at not getting a bid, others because they just dont care. At my school, Greeks are actively involved in campus life.
As far as Greeks being in the minority on major campuses, you better check into that also. Many campuses have a 20% greek population, which is one fifth of the students! I would hardly call that a minority. My campus, which is a major university, just to let you know, has 52% greek population! I believe that is technically the majority. Just thought you could use the info http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

What major University do you go to that has a Greek population that high?
