The Devil Wears Prada

I just checked this out from the library after being on the waiting list for almost three months. Who all read it? Who liked/disliked it?

mu_agd 10-02-2003 10:44 AM

i liked it a lot. it really made me appreciate my bosses! there were definitely parts that i just wanted to scream at the characters though! which is hard to do when you are on a crowded t car!

Steeltrap 10-02-2003 11:09 AM

Mixed reaction

For some reason, I like unlikable characters. But Andrea, the protagonist, didn't really do it for me. She seemed a bit whiny at times.

Miranda, the boss, had me LOL. I've read a lot about Anna Wintour, the Vogue editrix who Miranda's based on, and I think Weisberger's got her down fairly well.

Re: Mixed reaction

I loved it. It was a fun, fast (almost too fast) read. I especially loved the stylist at the magazine. You know, the one who ALWAYS SHOUTED, AND SAID THINGS LIKE "WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE!!!" :)

Rudey 10-02-2003 01:39 PM

Instead of reading this feminist jargon, you should all read Arnold's body building book.

CutiePie2000 10-02-2003 01:41 PM

I am reading it now, baby!!!
We can discuss it via PM, now that we're done talking about "Rose Red"... ;) LOL

AchtungBaby80 10-02-2003 05:02 PM

I loved it! I bought it over the summer for really cheap at Sam's Club, and since then I've read it twice. That Ms. Priestly...I tell you, she cracked me up. The sad thing is, there's really people like that! :p If you liked this book, you should also check out The Nanny Diaries...it's kinda the same thing, you know, poor little innocent girl (in this case a nanny) gets the privilege of working for the boss from Hades. :)

krazy 10-02-2003 05:25 PM

I am going to be the only guy...

...but who cares, I read it. I went on vacation w/ my girlfriends family this summer, and forgot my book. I read The Nanny Diaries and this in one week. I liked both of them. I am not ashamed!

etahannah 10-03-2003 12:05 PM

i want to read it really bad. i have a whole book list that is waiting for me to get too. sigh...can someone please give me some spare time!! i would appreciate it!!

Would you mind posting the books on your list here? We might have similar taste in books and I'm dying for some new reads!

Thanks :)

KR,

Check out this thread:

Reading for Pleasure

There are tons of great suggestions on here.. i'll probably be adding a few to that one soon.

Hootie 10-06-2003 10:04 PM

What is this book about...just a short filler please :)

CutiePie2000 10-23-2003 07:10 PM

It's about a girl who works as an assistant to a Magazine Editor who is a real b*tch on wheels, hence the title, "The Devil Wears Prada", cuz the devil is her boss, yes? The b*tch woman is apparently based on VOGUE's Anna Wintour who is apparently supposed to be a BIATCH in real life, if ever there was one.

Munchkin03 10-23-2003 07:12 PM

I read I Don't Know How She Does It a few weeks ago on the train to and from Philly...it was a good book, on a similar thread of the other books. It just reminded me that there is NO way that I could work full time with children!

Jill1228 10-23-2003 07:21 PM

I am going to be getting the book too! I have been dying to read it

Maroon5grl 10-23-2003 10:49 PM

I LOVE love love this book. I really wanted for the longest time to work for Vogue but this book made me think twice. Of course, after thinking twice I still decided I want to do it :D It's really hilarious and anyone who's interested in working in the fashion industry should read it. It's all based on the author's real experience of being Anna Wintour's personal assistant. That woman is hardcore.

Another really great book to read for people interested in the ugly side of fashion is Fashion Victim by Michelle Lee. It covers a lot of topics about the clothing industry that people don't usually take the time to think about. I read it a month ago and I'm rereading it just now. I was so touched by it that I wrote to the author and she wrote me back which was very sweet of her and so I'm going to advertise her book for her hehehe.

ZTAngel 10-24-2003 08:50 AM

I loved the book. I got so into it; there were times when I wanted to jump through the pages and just strangle fictional Miranda.
I was reading this and thinking that there couldn't possibly be anyone out there who is that awful to their employees. Then, I found out that the book was based on Anna Wintour who is known to be a real b*tch.
Made me greatful for my bosses.

KR-
I found this web-site yesterday, www.chicklit.com.
The forums are interesting for book lovers...especially "The Bookworm." Might get some ideas there as well.

Nikki_DZ 10-24-2003 02:13 PM

I, too, am on a "chick-lit" reading spree. I just reserved a copy of "Devil Wears Prada" from the local library.

Ones I've read lately:
"Good in Bed" Jennifer Weiner (excellent)
"In Her Shoes" Jennifer Weiner (okay)
"The Great Husband Hunt" Laurie Graham (not nearly as good as "Future Homemakers of America", her first book)
"Bookends" Jane Green (good)
"Jemima J" Jane Green (blech)

Andi, thanks for the site!

ThetaGrrl 10-24-2003 02:27 PM

Has anyone read the Shopaholic books? Most of my sisters have been reading them, and I've heard they are great...

Anyone else read them?

RedRoseSAI 10-24-2003 03:28 PM

Oh, I love the Shopaholic books! Becky's flights of fancy are very much like my own (you know, one small, insignificant event turns into a whole dreamed-up scenario) and I love the author's writing style. I wish there were more than just the three!

CutiePie2000 10-25-2003 01:24 AM

Hi Ladies,
Here is a copy and paste of my supersonic booklist and post from the "Reading for Pleasure" thread...

Hello...I wanted to put together a "Summer Reading List" so I mined this thread and there are a LOT of titles. Here they are for your use. I did not put every single book down, because some I read already, or else they did not "speak to me" in their descriptions. You can copy and paste this into Word and print it out. Also, I alphabetized it by author's surname so that you can walk through the aisles of the book store with relative ease, smart, huh? ;) Some of them say (reading with Ripa) as Kelly Ripa has a book club and I quite like her and I wanted to remember which ones were "Kelly's Picks"
Enjoy!

mu_agd 04-01-2006 06:13 PM

Is anyone else excited for the movie?

smiley21 04-01-2006 06:13 PM

I am surprised that no one had mentioned the movie coming out this summer with Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep.

I've read all of these books and I've loved them all. I'd highly recommend all of them

amycat412 04-02-2006 03:52 AM

If you liked the Devil Wears Prada (btw, Meryl Streep is playing Miranda in the movie), try Hilary De Vries's SO Five Minutes Ago, set in Hollywood publicity firm and similar in theme.

Xylochick216 04-02-2006 02:07 PM

I'm excited about the movie, but I hope it's better than most book adaptations I've seen recently. I LOVED In Her Shoes as a book, but after reading the book, the movie sucked. It left out SO many important things. People who never read the book liked the movie, but I was disappointed.

CrimsonTide4 04-02-2006 06:57 PM

I just finished reading it. WOW. Miranda was seriously one loathsome something or other. Defnitely looking forward to the movie now. :)

Time to read The Botox Diaries. :o

Ditto. After reading the book I didn't like the movie either.....AT ALL. It totally sucked. I am hoping they do a better job with this book to movie adaptation.

PoohsHoneyBee 04-03-2006 03:44 PM

i liked it sooo much, i actually considered running around nyc with my resume wanting to be a p.a. i changed my mind like five minutes later.

That's exactly how I felt about Bridget Jones' Diary.

I think I may actually like this movie. The whole Meryl Streep thing is going to take some getting used to though.

Xylochick216 05-06-2006 08:04 AM

I saw that Tracie Thoms is playing Lilly. I loved her in Rent, so I'm excited to see her in this. I really hope they stay true to the book!

Ali*Z 05-08-2006 10:03 AM

I read the book this weekend. I needed a weekend of mindlessness and this did it.
I really like the book. I am actually going to send to my sister to read.
